Cole Holcomb placed on reserve/COVID-19 list

Cole Holcomb is Washington’s latest addition to the reserve/COVID-19 list.

One day after a 27-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington added another starter to the reserve/COVID-19 list. On Tuesday, linebacker Cole Holcomb, who rarely misses a snap, was placed on the COVID list.

Under the NFL’s new testing policies, Holcomb could still play Sunday, but he would first have to clear the COVID protocols. Unfortunately for Washington, quarterbacks Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen were unable to clear protocols ahead of Tuesday’s game in Philadelphia.

Holcomb had played 100% of the defensive snaps in every game, except for Week 4, when he left with an injury in the second half. He’s amassed a career-high 120 tackles with three games to go, two forced fumbles, two interceptions and one touchdown.

Holcomb would be a significant loss if he can’t go on Sunday against the Cowboys.

Meanwhile, in other Washington-related COVID news, the WFT activated offensive tackle Cornelius Lucas and rookie practice squad DE William Bradley-King from the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Heinicke and Allen remain on the COVID list.

Washington has 17 players on COVID list as matchup with Eagles looms

#WashingtonFootball places 7 players on COVID list, bringing total to 17 as matchup with Philadelphia #Eagles looms

The Eagles return home to Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday and their NFC East opponent could be depleted from a personnel standpoint before kickoff arrives.

Washington announced that they’ve placed seven more players on the COVID-19 reserve list Wednesday. The team now has 17 players on the list.

The team placed quarterback Kyle Allen, linebacker Milo Eifler, safety Darrick Forrest, defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis, offensive tackle Cornelius Lucas, tight end Sammis Reyes and receiver Cam Sims on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

While starting quarterback Taylor Heinicke is expected to be available, Washington signed quarterback Jordan Ta’amu to its practice squad, joining Kyle Shurmur.

Washington currently has eight available defensive linemen for Sunday’s game against the Eagles, with defensive tackle Daron Payne the only starter that’s available.

Washington signed Nate Orchard off of Green Bay’s practice squad Tuesday and they’ll likely rotate defensive ends Daniel Wise, Shaka Toney, Bunmi Rotimi along with practice squad defensive tackles Gabe Wright, Hercules Mata’afa, and David Bada.

Lucas, Heinicke and McLaurin receive top scores from Pro Football Focus

Sunday was a big day for Taylor Heinicke, Terry McLaurin and Cornelius Lucas.

The Washington Football Team played their best offensive game of the season in the 27-21 Week 11 win over the Carolina Panthers. Of Washington’s four wins in 2021, Sunday’s 27 points were the lowest it scored in any of the team’s four victories.

So, why was it Washington’s best offensive performance? Balance. Quarterback Taylor Heinicke passed for 203 yards and three touchdowns, while Washington rushed for just under 200 yards.

For Heinicke, it was his best game of the season. His 141.3 quarterback rating and 92.5 QBR were his highest scores of the season. Pro Football Focus also gave Heinicke his top grade of the season with an 88.0.

Right tackle Cornelius Lucas was actually Washington’s highest-graded player on Sunday. Lucas finished with an 88.2 grade in relief of Sam Cosmi. Lucas was dominant as a run-blocker, earning a 91.3 run-blocking grade.

Wide receiver Terry McLaurin caught five passes for 103 yards and a touchdown. PFF gave McLaurin an 87.6 grade. McLaurin added to his league-leading contested catches as he reeled in two more.

Who was Washington’s top defender?

Of course it was defensive tackle Jonathan Allen. The fifth-year standout from Alabama earned an 86.9 grade after another stellar performance. While Allen didn’t record a sack, Allen was a wrecking ball to the Carolina’s interior offensive line.

Injuries continue to pile up on Washington’s offensive line

Washington lost two more starters on the offensive line in Sunday’s loss to the Broncos.

The Washington Football Team entered Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos minus two starters and the top backup offensive tackle. All-Pro guard Brandon Scherff missed his fourth consecutive game, while rookie tackle Sam Cosmi missed his third straight game.

Veteran offensive tackle Cornelius Lucas didn’t make the trip to Denver due to an illness. Lucas had started the previous two games at right tackle and played well.

So, on Saturday, Washington elevated offensive tackle David Steinmetz and center/guard Keith Ismael from the practice squad.

In the second quarter of Sunday’s loss to the Broncos, Washington lost dependable center Chase Roullier for the game with what the team called an ankle injury. The cart came on the field for Roullier, which means his absence is likely an extended one.

This was brutal as Roullier is arguably Washington’s most important offensive lineman.

Late in the game, Washington suffered another blow when dependable left guard Ereck Flowers went down with a leg injury. It was toward the end of the game, so Flowers did not return. Head coach Ron Rivera didn’t offer an update on either Roullier or Flowers after the game.

The good news for Washington is this is finally the bye week. Hopefully, players like Scherff, Cosmi and Lucas will be back in two weeks, and the injury to Flowers isn’t serious. Roullier is likely done for 2021.

A tough day for Washington was made even worse with multiple injuries along the offensive line.

Washington center Chase Roullier ruled out with an ankle injury

Chase Roullier is out with an ankle injury.

The Washington Football Team entered Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos without two starters on the offensive line. In addition to All-Pro right guard Brandon Scherff and rookie right tackle Sam Cosmi, Cornelius Lucas was also out of Sunday’s game.

Lucas had been Cosmi’s replacement at right tackle over the last two weeks but did not make the trip to Denver due to an illness.

Now, Washington will be without another key offensive starter as center Chase Roullier went down in the second quarter of Washington’s game at Denver. The cart came on the field for Roullier and Washington ruled him out for the remainder of the game.

Roullier was a sixth-round pick out of Wyoming in 2017 and has played in 67 career games with 61 starts. He signed a four-year extension in January and is one of Washington’s most consistent and reliable players.

We’ll have more on Roullier once head coach Ron Rivera speaks to the media.

Washington inactive players vs. Broncos

Washington listed seven players as inactive for Sunday’s game vs. Broncos — six are out with an injury.

The Washington Football Team released their inactive list ahead of Sunday’s Week 8 game against the Denver Broncos. Seven players are inactive for Washington, six of which are due to injury.

Washington will be without All-Pro guard Brandon Scherff and right tackle Sam Cosmi again vs. the Broncos. Wes Schweitzer will start at right guard, while second-year pro Saahdiq Charles will start at right tackle in place of Cosmi and Cornelius Lucas.

Lucas did not travel with the team to Denver as he is out with an illness.

Cornerback William Jackson III will miss his second consecutive game.

Wide receivers Curtis Samuel and Dyami Brown are also inactive. Samuel remains out with a groin injury. He has now missed six of eight games in his first season with Washington due to the same injury that has bothered him since minicamp.

Brown missed the Week 5 game against the Saints, returned the following week against the Chiefs, and departed last week’s game against the Packers early with a knee injury.

Cornelius Lucas is out for Washington on Sunday vs. Broncos

Washington will be down to its third-team right tackle on Sunday. This is a significant opportunity for Saahdiq Charles.

The Washington Football Team will be down to their third-team right tackle in Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos.

On Saturday, Washington announced reserve offensive tackle Cornelius Lucas was downgraded to out and will miss Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos.

Washington is already without starting right tackle Sam Cosmi, who will miss his third game with an ankle injury. Washington hopes All-Pro right guard Brandon Scherff will be back in the lineup after missing time with a knee injury.

Lucas will miss the game with an illness and did not make the trip to Denver. Second-year pro Saahdiq Charles is expected to start at right tackle. Washington elevated offensive tackle David Steinmetz and center Keith Ismael from the practice squad for Sunday’s game.

Lucas, who was Washington’s left tackle in 2020, has played well in place of Cosmi the last two weeks. Charles is making his second career start — but first at right tackle. The former LSU Tiger started a game at guard as a rookie, injured his knee in the first quarter, and missed the rest.

This is a big opportunity for Charles.

The bye week is coming at a perfect time for Washington’s beat-up offensive line.

Washington and the Broncos kick off at 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Washington’s offensive line receives top scores from Pro Football Focus

Four of Washington’s offensive linemen were its highest-graded players from Week 6.

The Washington Football Team entered its Week 6 game against the Kansas City Chiefs down the entire right side of the offensive line. All-Pro right guard Brandon Scherff missed his second consecutive game with an MCL injury, while impressive rookie right tackle Sam Cosmi missed the game with an ankle injury.

How would Washington’s offensive line keep quarterback Taylor Heinicke upright in the game?

Wes Schweitzer filled in for Scherff, while Cornelius Lucas stepped in for Cosmi, and the two former starters from 2020 ended up being Washington’s two highest-graded players in Week 6, according to Pro Football Focus.

Schweitzer was stellar, having one of Washington’s best single-game performances of 2021, recording an 89.5 overall grade. He was dominant run-blocking and solid in pass protection.

Lucas was right behind, recording an 82.9 grade. He scored 85.6 in pass protection. Left tackle Charles Leno continued his strong season, registering an 82.0 in pass protection. Center Chase Roullier finished with an overall grade of 81.2

Quarterback Taylor Heinicke finished with a 67.5 grade, while wide receiver Terry McLaurin scored a disappointing 53.6.

Defensive tackle Jonathan Allen was once again Washington’s highest-graded defender.

Washington has one of the best offensive lines in the NFL according to Pro Football Focus

Washington once again has one of the NFL’s better offensive lines through five weeks.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbykgy681k112p8 player_id=none image=https://washingtonfootballwire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Washington Football Team had one of the better offensive lines in the NFL in 2020. According to Pro Football Focus, by the end of the season, Washington had the No. 6 offensive line in the NFL.

Despite last season’s success, Washington coach Ron Rivera wanted to shake things up in 2021. Veteran Cornelius Lucas filled in at left tackle admirably in 2020, but he was never considered the long-term answer.

Then, Washington drafted Sam Cosmi in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft. A few weeks later, Washington signed veteran offensive tackle Charles Leno, who the Chicago Bears surprisingly released. Washington also reacquired guard Ereck Flowers from the Miami Dolphins.

Washington released longtime starter Morgan Moses and former third-round pick Geron Christian in response to those moves.

So, for Week 1, Washington’s offensive line consisted of Leno, Ereck Flowers, Chase Roullier, Brandon Scherff and Cosmi. While Cosmi struggled in the opener, he has been one of the NFL’s top run-blocking tackles through five weeks and is a significant reason why PFF has Washington’s offensive line ranked in the top 10 entering Week 6.

PFF recently ranked Washington’s offensive line No. 9 — six spots higher than a week ago:

Rookie Samuel Cosmi bounced back after a tough Week 1 performance and has continued his strong preseason play into his rookie year. Cosmi is the best-graded lineman on the team, and his 89.0 PFF run-blocking grade ranks inside the top 10 of all offensive linemen, tied with Dallas’ Tyron Smith — one of the best tackles in the game so far. All six linemen with at least 100 snaps for Washington this season have overall PFF grades between 69.9 and 77.0, providing quarterback Taylor Heinicke a pretty stable platform to work from.

Cosmi did not practice on Wednesday after leaving Sunday’s loss to the Saints with an ankle injury. Fortunately, Washington was able to plug Lucas in at right tackle.

Washington will also be without All-Pro guard Brandon Scherff for the second consecutive week on Sunday.

While Washington’s defensive line receives most of the accolades, it is the offensive line that continues to get the job done.

Washington RT Sam Cosmi ruled out with ankle injury

Cornelius Lucas is the right tackle for the remainder of this game.

The Washington Football Team came into Sunday’s game with a laundry list of injuries. One of those injuries was to All-Pro right guard Brandon Scherff, who is out 2-3 weeks with a knee injury.

In the first half of Washington’s game against the Saints, Washington lost rookie right tackle Sam Cosmi for the day with an ankle injury.

Cosmi originally went down after an Antonio Gibson touchdown run and was slow to get up. He left the field under his own power.

On its next series, Cosmi actually returned to the game for Washington but quickly went down again without contact. It appeared Cosmi rolled his injured ankle in pass protection, and Washington didn’t take a chance, ruling him out for the day.

That means veteran Cornelius Lucas, who did an excellent job for Washington at left tackle last season, is the right tackle for the remainder of the day.
