2024 Scouting notebook from CFB Week 8: Big Ten stars on the rise, another McCaffrey and more

The Week 8 matchups in college football provided several key proving grounds for some prominent NFL draft prospects for 2024. Some looked worthy, while others showed more potential flaws. It also was a weekend where a couple of unheralded players shone.

Here are some notes and observations from a busy scouting weekend.

49ers address offensive line and secondary in new NFL mock draft

In the latest NFL mock from Draft Wire, the San Francisco 49ers addressed the interior offensive line and secondary with their first two picks.

While the start of the NFL season is still a few days away, the college football season closed its opening week of action with a flurry of entertaining contests over the weekend. With college football back, NFL draft chatter is already in the air.

Following week one of the new college football campaign, Curt Popejoy of USA Today’s Draft Wire dropped a new two-round mock draft featuring two picks from the San Francisco 49ers.

With the No. 29 overall pick in the first round, Popejoy inked Kansas State’s Cooper Beebe to the 49ers. According to Popejoy, Beebe is a “powerful drive blocker.”

Niners get a powerful drive blocker who can pull and operate at the second level.

During the 2022 season, Beebe was named a first-team All-American along with earning the title of Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year. Beebe earned back-to-back First-Team All-Big 12 honors in 2021 and 2022. With the Wildcats, Beebe helped lead the way for now-Cowboys running back Deuce Mason.

The Eagles are just 22 days from the start of training camp, but it is never too early to look at the 2024 NFL draft.

Next spring will see guaranteed locks like Heisman Trophy Winner Caleb Williams (USC), Marvin Harrison Jr. (Ohio State), Drake Maye (UNC), Joe Alt (Notre Dame), Brock Bowers (UGA), and Olumuviwa Fashanu (Penn State) all battle to round out the top five.

With teams around the league praying to be on the clock, here’s an early of the top 2024 prospects at critical positions.

Full list of Eagles’ 2024 NFL draft picks with projected compensatory selections

We’re looking at the Philadelphia Eagles’ complete order of 2024 NFL draft picks with compensatory projections.

The Eagles made several critical signings during the 2023 NFL free agency process, with all of the additions being one-year deals.

Philadelphia GM Howie Roseman watched ten contributors leave on the open market.

Thanks to his shrewd maneuvering and roster building, the Eagles are in line for four valuable compensatory picks in 2024, according to NFL.com draft expert, Lance Zierlein.

The Eagles played the compensatory pick game perfectly. They knew they would have a large number of players depart in free agency, and they didn’t add any projected qualifying free agents to the team. Philadelphia should receive the maximum number of picks, including a third-rounder for Hargrave.

The Birds were slated to have six picks in the 2024 NFL draft, but thanks to the compensatory formula, they’ll have 10.

Here’s an early look at the Eagles’ 2024 NFL draft picks.

12 Kansas State players to know ahead of matchup with the Oklahoma Sooners

Get ready for Oklahoma’s matchup with Kansas State by getting to know these 12 Wildcats ahead of Saturday’s game.

When the Oklahoma Sooners kickoff Saturday’s game with the Kansas State Wildcats, they’ll be looking to avenge losses from each of the last two seasons. In 2019, it was their only blemish heading into the College Football Playoff. In 2020, the loss attempted to derail their Big 12 title defense.

The Sooners recovered and won the Big 12, but their back-to-back losses to Kansas State continue to hang over their head. Is this the year Lincoln Riley overcomes Chris Klieman in an intriguing Big 12 matchup?

Kansas State is once again a solid team. There are still some questions as to who will play quarterback. After sources indicated Skylar Thompson might play earlier in the week, Chris Klieman stated it was unlikely he would play. Tim Fitzgerald of GoPowercats on 247Sports still leaves some possibility that Thompson could play, but also leaves quite a bit of doubt in his update yesterday.

If Thompson is unable to play Kansas State will likely go with Will Howard as well as Jaren Lewis.

The biggest threat is running back Deuce Vaughn who our own Bryant Crews discussed in this profile ahead of Saturday’s matchup. If the Sooners can slow him down, then they’ll have a great chance at slowing down the Kansas State offense.

Let’s dig deeper than Deuce and get you ready for this pivotal Big 12 matchup by taking a look at six Kansas State players on offense and six on defense you should know.
