Former Texas A&M offensive lineman Matthew Wykoff reunites with Conner Weigman at Houston

Prior to becoming a Bear, Wykoff spent the first two years of his career at Texas A&M. He was selected to the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2022.

Two former Texas A&M football players are reuniting at the University of Houston through the NCAA Transfer Portal.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Conner Weigman officially departed from the Aggies on Wednesday when he chose the Cougars. The next day, California senior offensive lineman Matthew Wykoff chose to join Weigman in Houston.

“Dear Cal Family, I have thoroughly enjoyed the last two years being a part of this team and community,” Wykoff stated via X on Dec. 1. “I am blessed to be graduating this semester, but after lots of deliberation and prayer, I have decided to enter into the transfer portal as a grad transfer with one year of eligibility remaining.

“It has been a honor and Berkeley will always hold a special place in my heart.”

Prior to becoming a Bear, Wykoff spent the first two years of his collegiate career in Aggieland. Wykoff played in 16 games over two seasons at Texas A&M. He was selected to the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2022.

What does UAB transfer Jacob Zeno bring to Texas A&M QB room?

Watch what new Aggie QB Jacob Zeno can add to A&M’s quarterback room

This transfer portal season is crucial for Texas A&M as Mike Elko gained a ton of momentum early in the season that tapered off after going 1-3 to finish the season, missing out on the SEC championship game.

The first domino dropped when they brought in 7th-year quarterback Jacob Zeno for a visit and closed the deal with him committing on Tuesday. With both Conner Weigman transferring to Houston and Jaylon Henderson entering the portal, there was an immediate need for a veteran to push the young QB room in Aggieland. Zeno is the prototype QB needed for the role and does some of the things well that Marcel Reed needs to work on to take the next step.

Will Zeno be the starter? Unless he blows away the competition during the off-season, it will probably not happen. I’d expect Reed to do enough to keep his starting job with Zeno as QB 2 and Miles O’Neil in a third-string role.

Ideally, he will put enough pressure on Reed, forcing him to improve while being an experienced teammate to lean on when needed. Either way, he is the exact type of quarterback A&M was looking to bring in, and doing it this early in the transfer window allows them to focus on other needs for the team.

Steven Hamner of the QB Spotlight gives an excellent breakdown of what Zeno can add to the team and some reasons why he might be a good fit.

Former Texas A&M QB Conner Weigman has found his new home for the 2025 season

Conner Weigman is headed to join the Houston Cougars for the 2025 season

What a wild ride it’s been for former Texas A&M quarterback Conner Weigman, who entered the transfer portal earlier this month in hopes of reviving his starting career after three seasons with the Aggies.

Entering the program with the highest of hopes, the former five-star prospect and No. 1-ranked quarterback in the Aggies’ historic 2022 recruiting class dealt with a load of adversity right out the gate, which included his season-ending ankle injury during his first entire starting season in 2023.

After Jimbo Fisher’s eventual firing at the end of the 2023 campaign, Weigman was tasked with learning a new playbook under OC Collin Klein and new head coach Mike Elko. Weigman was sidelined for three games after his career-low performance in the season-ending loss to Notre Dame.

Weigman’s injury gave rise to current starting QB Marcel Reed, and even after returning and completing 18/22 for nearly 300 yards in A&M’s blowout win over Missouri, the redshirt sophomore’s play declined against Mississippi State and LSU, losing the starting job.

Needing a fresh start, Weigman’s recent visit to Houston was an immediate success, as I can now report that Conner has committed to the Houston Cougars for the 2025 season,

Conner Weigman finished his Texas A&M career with over 2,600 yards passing and 19 touchdowns,

Texas A&M’s historic 2022 recruiting class is all but dissolved after latest transfer

Texas A&M’s historic 2022 recruiting class has now seen 19 players enter the transfer portal over the last two offseasons

Texas A&M’s 2025 recruiting class is the first complete cycle for head coach Mike Elko heading into his second season with the program. On Wednesday, Elko and his staff signed 24 of 25 commitments in the class, including 5-star offensive tackle Lamont Rogers and 5-star WR Jerome Myles.

While the future is bright despite A&M’s 8-4 finish this season, eleven players have entered the transfer portal, including five more players from the Aggies’ historic 2022 recruiting class, which featured one of the best defensive line hauls in program history.

However, redshirt sophomore quarterback Conner Weigman’s entry into the portal after three injury-riddled seasons was not a surprise, as the former five-star signal caller needs a change of scenery amid quarterback Marcel Reed taking over as the permanent starter this season.

On Friday, the 19th player out of the 2022 cycle, former four-star offensive lineman Hunter Erb, entered the portal, leaving just eleven players from the historical class on the roster.

Losing talent is never a good thing, but during head coach Jimbo Fisher’s final two seasons in College Station, several class members caused major in-season headaches, including current UTSA cornerback Denver Harris and wide receiver Chris Marshall, who is currently on Boise State’s College Football Playoff-bound roster.

However, defensive lineman Walter Nolen (Ole Miss) and wide receiver Evan Stewart (Oregon) have thrived at their new destinations, as both players are still destined to be high draft picks as soon as the 2025 NFL Draft.

Mike Elko is putting his stamp on the program and bringing in players who fit his culture and bring the work ethic and winning attitude that will eventually help Texas A&M get over the hump and reach the CFP.

Here is every player from the 2022 recruiting class who has entered the transfer portal:

  • DL Walter Nolen — Ole Mis
  • WR Evan Stewart — Oregon
  • DL LT Overton — Alabama
  • CB Denver Harris — UTSA
  • QB Conner Weigman
  • S Jacoby Matthews
  • DL Anthony Lucas — USC
  • DL Enai White
  • OL PJ Williams — SMU
  • TE Jake Johnson — North Carolina
  • CB Smoke Bouie
  • DL Malick Sylla
  • CB Marquis Groves-Killebrew — Arizona
  • WR Chris Marshall — Boise State
  • OL Hunter Erb
  • CB Bobby Taylor
  • LB Martrell Harris
  • LB Ish Harris
  • K Ethan Moczulski — Illinois

Texas A&M coach Mike Elko ‘had an idea’ junior QB Conner Weigman’s departure ‘was coming’

“I had an idea that was coming. I think it’s the right thing for him, his future and career. I have a tremendous amount of respect for him.”

After three years in College Station, Texas A&M redshirt sophomore quarterback Conner Weigman has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal.

As was the case for many members of the 12th Man, Aggies football head coach Mike Elko was not surprised by the news of Weigman’s impending departure.

“So much respect for Conner and the way he handled a tremendously challenging situation for him. To lose the job and stay a consummate teammate, a great Aggie, a great teammate,” Elk said Wednesday. “I had an idea that was coming. I think it’s the right thing for him, his future and his career.

“I have a tremendous amount of respect for him.”

Despite the bittersweet nature of Weigman’s announcement, this truly is the best move for all parties involved. Texas A&M‘s offense was stagnant with Weigman under center and has a higher upside with redshirt freshman Marcel Reed as the signal caller.

Weigman‘s career in Aggieland will unfortunately be remembered as what could’ve been, largely due to injuries.

New predicted landing spot for Texas A&M QB Conner Weigman has emerged

Could Conner Weigman stay close to home in 2025?

On Monday, it was reported that Texas A&M quarterback Conner Weigman will enter his name into the transfer portal after three years with the program. His injury-riddled career in College Station has sadly come to an end.

While it didn’t work out during his first season under coach Mike Elko and first-year offensive coordinator Collin Klein, Elko appreciated the redshirt sophomore, who battled his way back from a shoulder injury before being permanently replaced by freshman QB Marcel Reed.

“So much respect for Conner (Weigman) and the way he handled a tremendously challenging situation for him.”

“To lose the job and stay a consummate teammate, a great Aggie, a great teammate. … I had an idea that was coming. I think it’s the right thing for him, his future and his career. I have a tremendous amount of respect for him.”

Elko is right on the money by noting Weigman’s dedication to the program no matter his starter status, as any QB-needy program would be lucky to land the former five-star prospect.

That list is becoming much clearer. On3’s Pete Nakos (subscription required) noted that Syracuse, Iowa, Wisconsin, Missouri and Louisville are the current leaders. However, the list has been reduced to three teams, led by Syracuse, Missouri, and a new addition, Houston.

A native of Cypress, Texas, Weigman grew up 30 miles from the Houston campus. First-year coach Willie Fritz is in dire need of a competent signal caller after quarterbacks Donovan Smith and Zeon Chriss combined for eight touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

Wisconsin football listed as team to watch for top transfer portal quarterback

Wisconsin football listed as team to watch for top transfer portal quarterback

Wisconsin football has emerged as a potential landing spot for Texas A&M transfer portal quarterback Connor Weigman.

Weigman announced his plans to enter the transfer portal on Tuesday, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Since that decision, Wisconsin Syracuse, Louisville, Iowa and Missouri have emerged as potential landing spots for the former five-star recruit.

As a sophomore with the Aggies, Weigman completed 64-of-114 passes for 819 passing yards and three passing touchdowns in six games.

Weigman also endured his fair share of ups and downs throughout his 2024 campaign. Following a bumpy first performance against Notre Dame, he responded with a solid performance in a win over McNeese State. An injury to his AC joint in his throwing shoulder sidelined him until Week 6 against Missouri — a game in which he led the Aggies to a 41-10 blowout win.

From there, he played just three more games of the season. He finished with a 37-yard, one-interception performance vs. New Mexico State before redshirt freshman Marcel Reed took control of the job.

Still, the highly-touted recruit has flashed his brilliance. As a freshman in 2022, Weigman made the first start of his career against Ole Miss and set a school record with 338 passing yards. His 896-yard, eight-touchdown season-long output earned him 2022 ESPN Freshman All-American nods, and it appeared as if he was on a trajectory to be Texas A&M’s pass-thrower for the long haul.

Plus, 247Sports’ composite listed Weigman as No. 22 overall recruit in the 2022 class and the nation’s No. 2 quarterback. The potential is there.

Now, the Texas native is in the portal. Given Wisconsin starting quarterback Braedyn Locke’s late-season struggles and uncertainly revolving around Tyler Van Dyke’s ACL recovery, Weigman’s link to the Badgers makes sense.

The Badges are also set to roster a batch young quarterback talents including Mabrey Mettauer, Carter Smith and Landyn Locke, who may not be ready to take over the quarterback responsibility. The Badgers have acquired their last two starting pass-throwers — Tanner Mordecai and Van Dyke — in the portal. Weigman would fit that same mold.

Former Texas A&M QB Conner Weigman linked to Iowa Hawkeyes in NCAA Transfer Portal

The Iowa Hawkeyes seem to be QB-shoppers in the portal this year.

With the NCAA Transfer Portal opening and players announcing that they will be looking for new teams, the Iowa Hawkeyes appear to be early players on the quarterback circuit.

Former Texas A&M QB Conner Weigman has entered the portal and the Iowa Hawkeyes are a team to watch for his services via the portal.

On3’s Pete Nakos has reported that Syracuse, Missouri, Louisville, and Wisconsin will also be teams to keep an eye on as Weigman’s destination.

Conner Weigman announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal from a post on his X account on Tuesday evening after three seasons with the Aggies.

“I will be entering my name into the transfer portal. While this chapter in Aggieland is coming to an end, I am excited to embrace the opportunities ahead with the same passion, determination, and love for the game that got me to the point I’m at today. I look forward to attacking whatever the future holds with everything I’ve got,” Weigman posted.

At 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, Weigman stands tall commanding the pocket. In his three seasons with Texas A&M, he was 219-365 (60%) for 2,694 yards and 19 touchdowns to seven interceptions.

During the 2024 season, Weigman was dealing with a shoulder injury that sidelined him and saw him assume a backup role while being hampered by a bum shoulder.

The Hawkeyes will very likely be in the market for a quarterback and have become a more attractive destination with Tim Lester at the helm after his offensive turnaround in 2024.

Weigman could give Lester the big-bodied, field general quarterback to give Iowa a downfield passing game to stretch defenses out and open up more of the playbook that they lacked this season.

The news of Conner Weigman being tied to the Hawkeyes comes on the heels of Miller Moss, the former USC QB, being linked to Iowa as a possible destination.

QB Conner Weigman sends final farewell to Texas A&M after entering the transfer portal

No matter where Conner Weigman ends up, we’ll all be rooting for him

On Tuesday, three more Texas A&M players entered the transfer portal, including redshirt sophomore quarterback Conner Weigman, after a rollercoaster of a season that ended on the bench and only seeing the field for a handful of snaps.

Weigman’s Aggie career began with great promise but was marred by a series of injuries. He missed all but two games in 2023, and a shoulder issue sidelined him for three games during the 2024 season. This opened the door for current starting quarterback Marcel Reed.

Coming in as the No. 1-ranked quarterback in the 2022 recruiting class, Weigman’s development track lacked consistency due to the coaching and coordinator changes, especially after Jimbo Fisher’s firing, and having to adjust to current OC Collin Klein’s run-heavy offense.

While Aggie fans all wished him well after his announcement, the beloved signal-caller said it best in a text message conversation with KBTX’s Travis Brown:

“Sucks not being able to finish out my career here, but that’s life and things don’t always work out as planned,” Weigman stated via text. “I loved my time here and can proudly say I gave it all I got for my brothers.”

In a social media post released on Tuesday night, Weigman expressed his love and gratitude for the 12th Man, knowing that despite his portal entry, he will always remember his time in College Station:

“It has been an honor to run out onto Kyle Field in front of the 12th Man for the past three years. The memories and relationships I have made throughout my time in Aggieland will last a lifetime. I am proud to say I was a “Fightin’ Texas Aggie,” and it has been a privilege to call a special place like this home.”

Good luck, and we’ll be rooting for you 15.

Texas A&M junior quarterback has entered the transfer portal

Junior QB Jaylen Henderson has joined Conner Weigman in the transfer portal

Texas A&M’s 2024 season ended at a disappointing 8-4 and 5-3 in SEC play after losing three out of their last four games, including the season finale 17-7 loss to rival Texas in the revival of the Lone Star Showdown.

With Early Signing Day set to begin on Wednesday, Elko and his staff are on fire recruiting-wise. They have landed three commitment flips, including former Missouri commits, led by five-star OL Lamont Rogers and four-star athlete/running back Jamarion Morrow.

However, Tuesday’s transfer portal activity has been busy for the Aggies, as three more players entered their names, including wide receiver Cyrus Allen and two quarterbacks: Redshirt sophomore Conner Weigman and junior Jaylen Henderson.

While Weigman’s exit isn’t surprising after he was benched in favor of redshirt freshman quarterback Marcel Reed, Henderson’s 2024 season was uneventful and injury-ridden, as the junior has proven that he can start in the SEC after starting three games during the latter half of the 2023 season.

Henderson’s best game came during his first start as an Aggie during former head coach Jimbo Fisher’s final game with the program against Mississippi State. He threw and ran for four touchdowns in one of the more memorable debuts. Henderson finished his A&M career with 715 passing yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions,

Jaylen Henderson has two years of eligibility remaining, while the Aggies only have two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster.
