Texans awarded 3 compensatory picks in 2020 NFL Draft

The Houston Texans were awarded three compensatory picks in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Houston Texans got a few extra resources for the 2020 NFL Draft.

The NFL announced Tuesday that the AFC South champions would get three compensatory picks in the April draft.

Houston was awarded the earliest compensatory pick of the draft in the third round at No. 97 overall. This is possibly due to the Kansas City Chiefs signing defensive back Tyrann Mathieu, who earned All-Pro honors with the AFC West champions en route to a Super Bowl LIV victory.

The Texans also got two seventh-round picks at No. 248 and No. 250, which could be because of the Denver Broncos signing defensive back Kareem Jackson and the Dallas Cowboys signing defensive lineman Christian Covington.

Houston had four picks heading into the draft. Now with the awarding of compensatory picks, the Texans have a total of seven with three of their seven occurring in the seventh round. Coach Bill O’Brien, now the full-time general manager, will have to coordinate with his personnel and scouting departments to best utilize their picks.

Vikings awarded three compensatory draft picks

The news has finally arrived. Minnesota has received three compensatory picks for the 2020 draft.

Minnesota has earned three compensatory picks for the 2020 NFL Draft, according to a report.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that the Vikings will have one compensatory pick in the third round and two in the seventh. Minnesota’s third round pick is the 105th overall pick in the draft, and the two seventh-rounders are 249th and 253rd overall.

The most compensatory picks a team can be awarded is four. This season, the Patriots received four compensatory picks, which was a league best.

Minnesota’s third round pick will help the team add much-needed depth in an offseason that could see a lot of veteran players find new teams.

The compensatory picks are based off free-agent losses and gains in 2019. Minnesota’s three extra picks bring the team to 10 in total. For more on compensatory picks from across the league in the NFL Draft, you can read this report from Draft Wire’s Luke Easterling.

Seahawks awarded 3 compensatory picks in NFL draft

The Seattle Seahawks now have 11 picks in the 2020 NFL draft after adding third, fourth and sixth round compensatory picks.

The Seattle Seahawks have been awarded three compensatory picks in the 2020 NFL draft after the final list was announced by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero on Tuesday afternoon.

The Seahawks now have a new third, fourth and sixth round pick in 2020, giving them 11 overall picks and a chance to add significant depth to their roster.

The picks are No. 101, No. 144 and No. 214 overall.

The Seahawks did not receive any comp picks in 2019, but still managed to trade their way into 11 draft picks. Now, with 11 already at their disposal, the team has more flexibility to either trade picks to move up in the draft (if they see someone they want) or to continue their tradition of trading for more picks, potentially collecting as many as 15 new players via the draft.

The last time Seattle had comp picks was 2017, when they used two third round selections on defensive tackle Nazair Jones and wide receiver Amara Darboh.

Joey Hunt, a sixth rounder in 2016, was also a compensatory pick selection.

The Seahawks have roughly six weeks until the NFL draft, and with 11 picks in tow they have plenty of work to do to put together the best possible roster before the start of the 2020 season.

For second straight year, no compensatory picks awarded to Packers

The Packers haven’t had a compensatory pick awarded since the 2018 draft.

Unlike his predecessor, Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst hasn’t let the compensatory pick formula stop him from being aggressive in free agency.

For the second straight year, the Packers did not receive a compensatory draft pick.

Gutekunst went on a spending spree last March, signing Za’Darius Smith, Preston Smith, Adrian Amos and Billy Turner on the first day of free agency, all but guaranteeing the Packers wouldn’t receive a compensatory pick in the 2020 draft.

The Packers now rank fourth in the NFL in compensatory picks awarded since 1994. Green Bay’s 42 picks trail Baltimore’s 52, Dallas’ 43 and New England’s 43.

Former Packers general manager Ted Thompson valued adding compensatory picks, often using the reward as partial justification for his reluctance to dip into free agency.

Gutekunst has broken the mold. Under his rule, the Packers have been aggressive in free agency, signing big-money free agents during each of his offseason in charge without fear of missing out on future picks. Instead, Gutekunst has used trades to acquire additional late-round picks.

The Packers will hold 10 total picks in the 2020 draft.

The highest compensatory pick in 2020 was awarded to the Houston Texans. It is the 97th overall pick in the third round.

NFL announces compensatory picks for 2020 NFL Draft

The NFL has awarded this year’s round of compensatory picks for the 2020 NFL draft

The wait is finally over for those extra draft picks.

The NFL has announced the compensatory picks for the 2020 NFL Draft (via NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero):

Here’s the full breakdown of why each team received each pick, via NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport:

The New England Patriots received the most extra picks, getting four compensatory selections in this year’s draft, two of which are at the end of the third round.

The Houston Texans received the earliest extra pick, which takes place at the end of the third round.

These picks are normally announced during the NFL Scouting Combine, but the ongoing labor talks between the league and the NFLPA likely contributed to the delayed announcement.

2020 NFL draft: Colts awarded no compensatory picks

Colts don’t get any additional picks.

As expected, the Indianapolis Colts were awarded no compensatory picks in the 2020 NFL draft.

Because the Colts didn’t lose any big-time free agents in 2019 and because they signed a few players last year, the formula didn’t allow for them to receive any additional picks between the end of the third round through the seventh round.

Only a total of 32 compensatory picks can be handed out from the league. It usually goes to teams that lost a lot of valuable players in free agency the year prior.

Even though the Colts didn’t receive any extra draft capital, that doesn’t mean they won’t be impacted by the changes. Their selections starting in the fourth round are likely to be pushed back a few spots because of the additions being made for other teams.

The New England Patriots led the way with four compensatory picks, which included two at the end of the fourth round. The Houston Texans received the highest compensatory pick, which came in the third round at No. 97 overall.

Chiefs do not receive any compensatory picks for 2020 NFL draft

No extra draft picks for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ departing free agents in 2019 did not earn the team a compensatory pick for the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Chiefs were not projected to receive a compensatory pick for 2020. They lost qualifying free agents WR Chris Conley, C Mitch Morse, CB Steven Nelson and TE Demetrius Harris in 2019. But they also signed DB Tyrann Mathieu, DE Alex Okafor, LB Damien Wilson and CB Bashaud Breeland who canceled out those four signings.

Since 1994, the NFL has awarded the Chiefs 25 total compensatory picks. That includes the latest pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, which they used to select RB Darwin Thompson in the sixth round. So far they’ve turned those picks into 21 players, with several ending up as long-term contributors.

Below you’ll find all of NFL comp picks for 2020:

Keep in mind that you can now trade compensatory picks, so it is possible that Kansas City could acquire one from another team. With the introduction of compensatory picks, there will be a new draft order and we’ll know the official draft slots for the Chiefs’ fourth and fifth-round selections in 2020.

NFL comp picks 2020: Browns get no extra draft selections

NFL comp picks 2020: Browns get no extra draft selections

The NFL revealed the compensatory draft picks awarded to teams for net losses in free agency. As expected, the Cleveland Browns did not receive any comp picks for the 2020 NFL Draft.

Comp picks are awarded to teams who lost more value in free agency than they gained by signing free agents. The Browns were not candidates, not after signing DT Sheldon Richardson, TE Demetrius Harris, LB Adarius Taylor and others. The only significant free agent contracts signed by ex-Browns were QB Tyrod Taylor (Chargers) and WR Breshad Perriman (Buccaneers).

More explanation on the formula from Over The Cap,

As the NFL explains, compensatory picks are awarded to teams that lose more or better compensatory free agents than they acquire. The number of picks a team can receive equals the net loss of compensatory free agents, up to a maximum of four. Compensatory free agents are determined by a secret formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. Not every free agent lost or signed is covered by the formula.

The Browns might not be completely shut out of the comp picks, however. The Houston Texans will get a third-round compensatory pick and they owe the Browns a 2020 third-rounder from the trade for RB Duke Johnson. It is currently unclear if that will be the pick the Texans convey to the Browns.

The last time the Browns earned comp picks was 2017, when they earned four.

NFL gives 3 compensatory draft picks to Broncos

The NFL has given the Broncos three compensatory picks for the 2020 NFL draft.

[jwplayer 2KPXu1ew-ThvAeFxT]

Each offseason, the NFL awards compensatory draft picks to teams who lost more (or better) free agents than they acquired the previous offseason.

For example, if cornerback Chris Harris left Denver and signed a $14 million-per-year contract with another team and the Broncos replaced him with a $4 million-year-year cornerback, Denver would likely receive a comp pick for Harris in 2021.

The league announced 2020 comp picks on Tuesday and the Broncos have been awarded three selections for this year’s draft. The NFL does not announce who the picks are helping compensate for but OverTheCap.com (OTC) makes projections each year.

Denver received an extra fifth-round pick (No. 178) and two seventh-round picks (Nos. 252 and 254). OTC projects that the fifth-round selection was awarded for losing offensive lineman Billy Turner last offseason. The seventh-round picks might have been for losing offensive lineman Max Garcia and cornerback Tramaine Brock in 2019.

The Broncos are now slated to have 11 selections in the 2020 NFL draft, which is scheduled to be held in Las Vegas from April 23-25.

Trading for A.J. Bouye might make Broncos more likely to receive a comp pick for Chris Harris in 2021

After acquiring A.J. Bouye through a trade, the Broncos might be able to land a high compensatory draft pick for Chris Harris in 2021.

Each offseason, the NFL awards compensatory draft picks to teams who lost more than they gained in free agency the previous year.

So if the Broncos lost Chris Harris this offseason and signed a big-name free agent cornerback, they probably wouldn’t receive a comp pick for Harris in 2021 because the new CB’s big contract would cancel out the loss of Harris.

Comp picks only account for free agency, though. Trades aren’t part of the formula.

By acquiring cornerback A.J. Bouye through a trade with the Jaguars, Denver might have preserved a potential comp pick for Harris.

As Nick Korte of OverTheCap.com has pointed out on Twitter, the Broncos could get a third-round pick for Harris in 2021, depending on who the team signs during free agency.

Denver sent a fourth-round pick to Jacksonville in exchange for Bouye so the team could end up with a younger cornerback and a higher draft pick. That would be some shrewd business from general manager John Elway.

There’s still a chance that the Broncos will bring back Harris on a contract extension, but it’s a slim chance.
