The Kansas City Chiefs are not projected to receive a compensatory draft pick in the 2020 NFL draft according to Over The Cap.
During the 2019 free agency period, the Chiefs lost four free agents that qualified toward the compensatory pick formula. Those four players are WR Chris Conley, C Mitch Morse, CB Steven Nelson and TE Demetrius Harris. They also gained four players in free agency that canceled out those four signings. Those players are DB Tyrann Mathieu, DE Alex Okafor, LB Damien Wilson and CB Bashaud Breeland.
The Chiefs did have a shot at a fourth-round pick, but things didn’t go their way. When the Colts signed RB Spencer Ware, he was injured and ultimately released, ending the possibility of gaining a pick through the formula. OG Jordan Devey was originally non-qualifying, however, he could have played enough snaps for the Raiders to help Kansas City qualify. Unfortunately, he was injured and placed on injured reserve, ending that dream.
A Super Bowl victory is plenty worth the cost of an extra 2020 draft pick. Each of the players the Chiefs signed played a significant role in helping the team earn their first Vince Lombardi Trophy in 50 years. However, with only five selections in the draft, Kansas City would have been happy to have the extra draft capital. They’ll just have to find a way to do without it come April.
