What’s Going To Happen

And now it’s all there for the taking for Miami.

Thanks to its win over Ohio last week, and with wins over Buffalo and Kent State, MU will be the 2019 MAC East champion with a win over a Bowling Green team that needs this to become bowl eligible.

And, by the way, as a cherry on top, the RedHawks can get to six wins and be bowl eligible with a win, too.

The Falcons were good enough to shock Toledo, and they won their free-space game last week against Akron, but they have to win out to get to six wins.

On a three-game winning streak, MU doesn’t do much of anything on offense, it doesn’t have a passing game, and it doesn’t do much to control the clock. So how is it winning? The defensive line lives behind the line and the secondary is great at locking down against mediocre offenses.

Bowling Green doesn’t do enough through the air to make MU worry, and the running game isn’t good enough to take over.

Miami was going to be cranked up before to win this game, and now that it has its goals available, it’ll play at another level – even if it’s not scintillating.

Bowling Green has been obliterated by a combined score of 215-17 in its four road games. Miami doesn’t have the offense to come up with a wipeout, but it’ll win easily.

Kentucky (4-5) vs. Vanderbilt (2-7) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Kentucky Will Win

Does Vanderbilt have any hope to complete a downfield pass?

Commodore QB Riley Neal hasn’t been right for a few weeks and missed the Florida game. Even when he’s been healthy, the offense has struggled to move, scoring more than ten points just once in the last five games.

Overall, the passing game is averaging just over five yards per throw with the combination of quarterbacks failing to complete more than 55% of their passes over the last five games.

This isn’t an Vandy offense that can come out and start scoring in bunches. Kentucky needs to start running, keep control of the clock, and take advantage of its opportunities.

UK should be able to run for 200 yards and hold the ball for at least 35 minutes. It’ll have to, because …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

There’s really no Wildcat passing game.

The offense is all about WR Lynn Bowden keeping things going from under center, running just effectively enough to not screw up, milking the clock, and then hoping the defense can take care of the rest.

It’s easier said than done to stop what the Wildcats are doing – slow and steady wins the race – but the O has failed to hit 100 yards passing over the last five games with just one touchdown pass in the last six outings.

It’s not just that Kentucky doesn’t do much offensively, it’s that there’s no downfield passing game to worry about, and the O doesn’t do enough when it gets its chances.

The Wildcat placekicking isn’t anything great, and the offense sputtered and struggles too much in the red zone.

Getting a point in this thing will be like pulling teeth.

[lawrence-related id=499899]

What’s Going To Happen

On the plus side for Kentucky, losing to Vanderbilt would be only the second-worst/weirdest defeat by the school this week.

The Wildcat defense will come up with stop after stop, the game will grind down to a dead stop at times, and it’ll be at the exact pace both teams need it to be.

Kentucky does this better.

Georgia (8-1) vs. Auburn (7-2) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Georgia Will Win

To beat Auburn, you have to be able to hold up against their lines. Georgia is one of the few teams with the offensive front to do more than just hold its own against this group – it’s not letting Jake Fromm get touched all the often –  and the defensive front has been a rock against the run.

The UGA offense might not be anything scintillating, and the downfield passing attack is a wee bit lacking, but the defense is making up for it by currently raking second in the nation behind just Ohio State in scoring defense while leading the SEC in total D.

The line isn’t giving up a thing against the run – only three teams have rushed for more than 100 yards, and UK has a season-high 160 yards against the Bulldog front – and the secondary has been able to keep the big plays to a minimum, too.

Are you ready to believe in Bo Nix? The Auburn freshman quarterback has been solid throughout the year, and he was great in the win over Ole Miss, but in the three big games so far – Oregon, Florida and LSU – he failed to hit 42% of his passes. But …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Auburn Will Win

All three of those games against the nasty teams on the Tiger schedule were away from Jordan-Hare. He doesn’t have to be Joe Burrow, and he doesn’t have to do anything special. He has to keep the mistakes to a minimum, and he has to connect on the throws that are there.

The Georgia defense might be great, but it doesn’t generate a lot of pressure, and the secondary doesn’t take the ball away with just one pick in the last four games and six on the season.

The bigger concern for Georgia is the stunning inconsistencies in the passing game. Weather played a role in some of the downs games for Fromm, and he hasn’t thrown a pick in any game other than the loss to South Carolina, but last week he couldn’t get much going in the win over Missouri, and his accuracy has been all over the place lately after a terrific start.

The Auburn secondary struggled against Oregon’s Justin Herbert, and it got hit hard by Burrow in the loss to LSU, but for the most part it’s been able to keep the downfield connections to a minimum, and the D as a whole is fantastic on third downs.

However …

[lawrence-related id=499899]

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia’s defense is better on third downs.

It’s going to be a low-scoring fight with neither team being able to run the ball effectively enough to establish any sort of a rhythm.

Both teams will have their chances to take over in the second half, and both defenses will clamp down. Georgia will be a wee bit better in the red zone, Fromm will be a wee bit better than Nix.

College Football Free Predictions, Previews from Winners & Whiners: Week 12

Week 12 college football predictions and previews from Winners & Whiners

[jwplayer PkCtjTd4-boEY74VG]

College Football Week 12 Free Predictions

We’re headed to Week 12 of the college football season! Last week, LSU beat Alabama on the road, Minnesota stayed unbeaten with a win over Penn State at home and Baylor needed three overtimes to beat TCU.  This week, No. 9 Oklahoma travels to No. 12 Baylor, No. 24 Navy is at No. 15 Notre Dame and No.6 Georgia is headed to No. 11 Auburn.

(note: These picks were made by our Editor and are subject to change. Check out WinnersandWhiners.com for a full analysis and update on each matchup)

*Oklahoma has now allowed 89 points in their last two games. That’s not a good sign, after edging Iowa State last week. But for some reason, they are a double-digit favorite against a Baylor squad, coming off a triple-overtime win over TCU last week. Baylor is not dominating teams at home, but they are finding ways to win. Unlike Oklahoma, they took apart Kansas State on the road. Take the Bears at home to cover.

*How good is Navy? They’ve won five straight before their bye last week and their only close game came against Tulane in three-point win. This game is all about stopping the run so Indiana, we have a problem. Notre Dame is allowing 157.3 yards per game on the ground and the Mids are leading the nation with 358.3 yards per contest. Malcolm Perry will be a handful and he’s throwing the ball occasionally. Notre Dame is trying to go to a New Year’s Day bowl and they could win, but they won’t cover the 9.5. Take the points and Navy.

*Another big SEC battle, this involving a Georgia team that has now won three straight games and has shut out two of those teams (Ky and Missouri). Auburn gave LSU their toughest game, falling by three and then came back to beat Ole Miss, 20-14. Neither team has been very explosive as of late. Bo Nix threw for 340 yards last week against Ole Miss. The freshman will have a much tougher test this wwk. But the Tigers are at home. This will be a tight one. Take the home dog (not Dawg).

Florida (8-2) vs. Missouri (5-4) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Florida Will Win

The Missouri offense is a mess.

Kelly Bryant hasn’t been healthy for weeks, was out in the shutout loss to Georgia, and while he’s playing agains the Gators, he hasn’t been himself.

Ever since the 38-27 win over Ole Miss, the Tigers managed just 21 points over the last three games, getting stuffed by Vanderbilt and Kentucky teams that aren’t good enough to be stopping anyone cold.

What’s been the problem? The running game has come to a dead stop.

So far this year, Mizzou is 5-0 when running for 165 yards or more, and 0-4 when being held to fewer. The Florida defensive front got rumbled on by LSU and South Carolina in back-to-back weeks, but those are the only two times it allowed more than 140 yards.

On the other side, the Missouri pass rush isn’t there to provide any consistent pressure on Kyle Trask. The Tiger D overall has been good, and the pass defense works, but as long as the Gators have time to work, the passing attack will be effective enough.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Missouri Will Win

Mizzou is at home.

It’s partly because almost all of the good games have been on the road so far, and partly because the team appears to be a different sort of animal in Columbia, but it’s 5-0 at home, and 0-4 on the road. Now the team is finally back after three weeks away from Faurot Field.

How much will the weather matter? It’s high 70s all week in Gainesville, it’s supposed to be in the 60s this weekend, and it’s expected to be in the 40s in Columbia at game time.

On the field, Florida has a turnover problem. It turned the ball over 21 times so far with there giveaways against Vanderbilt last week. That hardly mattered in a 56-0 win, but considering the problems lately for the punchless Tigers, being up in the turnover battle is a must.

The team is +6 in the five wins, and -5 in the four losses. However …

[lawrence-related id=499899]

What’s Going To Happen

Almost no one is better than Florida at taking the ball away.

Missouri pulled off one of the bigger stunners of the 2018 SEC season with a 38-17 win in Gainesville, but that’s hardly anything new. The Tigers are 5-3 all-time against the Gators – starting with the win in the 1966 Sugar Bowl – and have won two straight in the series.

This time around, though, Mizzou just doesn’t have enough offense to pull off the upset against a defense that’s too tough against the run and won’t give up enough big plays against the struggling passing game.

Alabama (8-1) vs. Mississippi State (4-5) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Alabama Will Win

Alabama is still hardly out of this.

On the flip side, the Crimson Tide now have to go on a tear to show the College Football Playoff types – and the rest of the world – the they really are among the four best teams. That only works with total destruction and annihilation the rest of the way.

The passing game continues to be unstoppable. Totally lost in the loss to LSU was how a hobbling Tua Tagovailoa threw for 418 yards and four scores with big play after big play. The Mississippi State defense doesn’t have the secondary to hold up.

The Bulldogs got picked clean by Auburn’s Bo Nix, allowed four teams in a row to hit 71% or more of their throws – up until Arkansas went Arkansas – and are getting hit by too many deep passes.

As long as Bama is deadly focused, it should be able to assault the MSU defense from the start.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Mississippi State Will Win

As LSU just proved, this isn’t the Alabama defense of the past.

It’s very good, very talented, and LSU is at a whole other level, but the Tide can be thrown on, and they have problems against strong, sturdy runners.

They’ve still only allowed over 200 rushing yards once – the blowout win over Ole Miss – and they’re still fantastic overall, but Mississippi State has to come out and establish Kylin Hill right away.

The junior ripped up Arkansas for 234 yards and three scores last week, nailed Texas A&M for 150 yards the week before, an has done a nice job of overcoming the lack of a steady passing game by pounding away.

The Bulldogs are great at taking the ball away, controlling the clock, and …

[lawrence-related id=499899]

What’s Going To Happen

They’re bad at getting to the quarterback.

Tagovailoa isn’t exactly a sitting duck, but he can’t be allowed to get comfortable. The Bulldogs don’t have the ability to knock No. 13 off his game.

Expect this to be the Jerry Jeudy game. He had a disappointing day against LSU with a few key drops, and he hasn’t blown up lately, outside of a good day against Arkansas.

11 straight. 2007 was the last time Mississippi State was able to pull off the win over the Tide. It won’t happen this week – Bama rolls as if the LSU game never even happened.

Western Michigan (6-4) vs. Ohio (4-5) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

What’s Going To Happen

It’s must-win time for an Ohio team that lost the game it couldn’t lose to Miami University last week. That put the Bobcats 1.5 games behind the RedHawks in the East, but it also means they had to do a lot more work to get bowl eligible.

They get relative layups at Bowling Green and Akron to close, but they’ll have to win them both to go bowling. They also want to try to win out to get a shot a the MAC title.

Western Michigan is bowl eligible, but it has to hold off Central Michigan, Ball State and Toledo in the West. The Broncos have won three of their last four, but they close out with this game and a trip to Northern Illinois. Win both of them, and they’re off to the MAC title game.

They’re great at keeping things moving offensively, and they have the pass rush and defensive front to give the Ohio ground game a slew of problems.

They also dominate the turnover margin, and Ohio doesn’t take the ball away. On the road, WMU has to be a +2.

However, the Bobcats are better at WMU on third downs, and the running game has kicked it in to other gear over the last few weeks. As good as the Bronco line is at getting into the backfield, it can be hammered. Ball State might have lost last week, but it ran for 261 yards and three scores.

Ohio will run for over 200 yards this week, and in the final home game of the season, it’ll pull off the win by controlling the game a bit more.

Eastern Michigan (4-5) vs. Akron (0-9) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

What’s Going To Happen

Eastern Michigan might effectively be out of the MAC West title chase after dropping its last two games and four of its last five, but it still has a shot to become bowl eligible.

The team that managed to beat Illinois earlier in the season has Northern Illinois and Kent State to follow, but first it has to roll past an Akron team that hasn’t done anything right all year.

It’s been a brutal run for the Zips. They’re 0-9, they’ve scored nine points in the last four games, and they did the impossible by losing to a miserable UMass team on the way to one of the worst defensive seasons ever.

EMU might be struggling, but Akron is getting destroyed. The Zips haven’t come closer than 21 points in any game but the loss to UMass and early on against UAB – losing 31-20 – with the nation’s worst scoring offense.

There are way too many mistakes and turnovers, there’s no pass rush, and there aren’t any sustained marches. Eastern Michigan isn’t doing much of anything right, but it can find ways to score.

RB Shaq Vann and the Eagle backfield will take over early, and the D will do the rest.

Sorry if this column sucks, it’s not my fault …

There was about to be a moment of relief after an ugly run of bad columns. This one was up by 25 going into the final quarter, and then Illinois scored four touchdowns to send it into a deeper shame-spiral. There was joyful hopping.

“How do you shoot the Devil in the back? What if you miss?”

(Before we get started, and knowing your blood is about to boil, I do have the answer to all of this in a later blurb.)

Seriously, America? You think LSU just killed the elephant?

You actually think Alabama is out of the College Football Playoff now? Have you learned absolutely nothing over the last ten years of college football?

You might not like it, and you might deny it, and you might try to wish it all away, but you also know exactly how this is going to turn out.

You know who else knows? Nick Saban.

There’s a reason he was so chilaxed after his defense got embarrassingly pantsed for the second time in ten months by a team with elite offensive talent. He has seen it all before.

Of all programs, LSU should (bleep)ing know better than to be pouring Gatorade, doing victory laps, and being hailed at home coming off the plane as if it’s all over.

It was over in 2011.

LSU went on the road and beat Alabama 9-6, and that was that.

Bama fell to third in the BCS standings, and Oklahoma State moved up to No. 2 as it crushed and killed everything in its path. And then came that fateful Friday night at Iowa State with a missed Cowboy field goal that really did look good, bad throws by Brandon Weeden, and a stunning loss that led to the big debate.

You can’t have a team that didn’t win its own division, much less its own conference, play in a rematch for the BCS Championship after losing the first time around at home. It’s wrong, it’s unconscionable, it’s not fair to the college football season, it’s …

Alabama 21, LSU 0. 2011 National Champion Alabama.

It was over in 2012.

Johnny Manziel walked into Tuscaloosa and left with a Heisman, along with a 29-24 win over the 9-0 No. 1 Tide. That was it. Bama blew it. You can’t lose that late in the season at home and end up in the national title.

The Tide fell to fourth in the BCS Standings, and then …

No. 1 Kansas State was exposed in a blowout loss at Baylor, a monster No. 2 Oregon team blew it in a 17-14 home loss to Stanford, Notre Dame won out, Bama moved back up to No. 2, and …

Alabama 42, Notre Dame 14. 2012 National Champion Alabama.

I’m old enough to remember 2017.

Bama beat a whole lot of no one – sound familiar? – lost the regular-season finale to Auburn, didn’t win its own division, didn’t win its own conference, and yada, yada, yada, it got the massive break of a two-loss Ohio State stopping a 12-0 Wisconsin on a late drive in the Big Ten Championship.

Bama slipped into the College Football Playoff as the No. 4 seed, destroyed Clemson in the Sugar Bowl, got to Atlanta, and …

Alabama 26, Georgia 23. 2017 National Champion Alabama.

I have screamed, yelled, bitched, whined, prayed, and pleaded my case for years and years and years that a team that can’t win its own division shouldn’t be able to win the national title. I’d love absolutely nothing more than a College Football Playoff with four fresh new schools – say, LSU, Minnesota, Baylor, Utah – in the mix.

But that’s not how the College Football Playoff works.

It’s about who the committee thinks the four best teams are, and as much as we all might not like it – especially with just one decent win on the slate – yeah, that’s Alabama.

If he committee liked the Tide enough to put them No. 3 in the first round of rankings, it’s not going to have a whole slew of issues at the end of the season in the whole four-best-team argument if they win out – again, more on that in a moment.

Like it or not, no matter how the sausage was made, Bama put up 41 points. Tua Tagovailoa threw for 418 yards and four scores on a bum ankle – get ready for that to be a talking point in a few weeks – Najee Harris ran for 146 yards and scored twice, and in the end, the team looked the part of one of the four best teams – at least offensively. It might not be one of the three best, but fourth?

Who’s that fourth team – at least in the eyes of the CFP committee – if it’s not Bama?

It’s been cute and all, but Minnesota and Baylor aren’t getting into the College Football Playoff.

Oregon? Lost to Auburn. If Bama beats Auburn at Auburn, there goes that.

I actually think Utah could do some damage in the tournament, but it has to get there first, and the loss to USC doesn’t help.

Who’s got the chops to finish out the rest of the way without another loss?

Oklahoma? Yeeesh. Georgia? More than you think (again, give me a moment). Penn State? Intriguing (also, it’s coming in a second), but probably not considering it lost to Minnesota and Bama lost to the No. 2-soon-to-be-No. 1 team.

So who? Who’s that fourth team? You? You, Lieutenant Weinberg?

LSU, next time you kill something, make sure it stays dead.

Now, I know exactly what’s coming next, because, of course …
