Watch: D’Wan Mathis to George Pickens scene one

Watch new UGA quarterback D’Wan Mathis connect to star receiver George Pickens for a big first-down conversion here!

Georgia has a starting quarterback.

Coach Kirby Smart and staff elected to start redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis over USC transfer J.T. Daniels and he has shown some ability early on in the first half.

This particular throw to George Pickens may be a foreshadowing of things to come for the Bulldog offense :

Love how Mathis stood tall and got it to Pickens with not much room to work with; hopefully we get to see more of this moving forward!

Former Georgia star RB D’Andre Swift on UGA quarterbacks: ‘I would like to see D’Wan Mathis out there’

Former Georgia running back D’Andre Swift gives his thoughts on the UGA quarterback situation. Details and analysis here!

Georgia is set to kick off its 2020 season versus Arkansas at 4 p.m. on the SEC Network and currently has not named a starting quarterback.

The Bulldogs were hit with adversity early this September when Wake Forest transfer quarterback Jamie Newman decided to opt-out of the 2020 season citing, concerns surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic.

This left Georgia with redshirt sophomore USC transfer J.T. Daniels and redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis as potential signal callers.

We have received news today that Daniels has still yet to be cleared for gameplay from his ACL tear last year, which means we will most likely see Mathis make his college football deput in Fayetteville.

Lions running back, former Georgia football star D’Andre Swift gave his thoughts on the Georgia quarterback situation recently in an interview with Campus Lore.

“I know Coach Smart is going to make the best decision for the team,” Swift said. “But, me personally, I would like to see D’Wan Mathis out there. I think he will bring a different style of play. I have been reading up on him and he has looked great in camp. He is ready and looked real mature. I want to see him out there. I definitely want to see him out there.”

There may not be as much of a battle as reported, if Daniels’ can’t get cleared from his knee injury that occured last October.

It should free Mathis up to run things without the thought of Daniels’ over his shoulder every play, but against teams like Auburn and Alabama, the Bulldogs may need all hands on deck to get the offense going.

What Arkansas media is saying about Georgia football ahead of Saturday’s season opener

See what the Arkansas media is saying about Georgia ahead of Saturday’s matchup. Details and analysis here!

It’s finally here. No. 4 Georgia is set to kickoff its 2020 season at Arkansas on Saturday at 4 p.m. on the SEC Network.

UGA coach Kirby Smart matched up against former offensive line coach Sam Pittman, who left the Bulldogs last year to take the head coach position in Fayetteville.

Georgia has not yet named a starting quarterback and Smart hinted to the possibility of UGA keeping that under wraps anyway, but we know that former Florida quarterback Feleipe Franks will be at signal caller for the Razorbacks.

Here is what the Arkansas football media is saying about the Bulldogs:

“Maybe Smart mentioning Mathis last means he’s going to start. Several Georgia media members have speculated Mathis will start Saturday.”

“Georgia’s expected starter Jamie Newman who transferred in as a grad transfer from Wake Forest was generally considered the most likely quarterback, but he opted out of the season. That left USC transfer JT Daniels and D’Wan Mathis as the likely candidates. A reporter speculated to Pittman that Mathis seemed to be the likely starter.

“Georgia did not rack up a bunch of sacks last season either, finishing 46th nationally with 31 total, nor did the Bulldogs did not make a lot of TFL (60th with 76). Given those numbers, the fact that UGA was second nationally in allowing just 2.6 yards per rush without a lot of those negative yardage plays is even more impressive. They also led the nation with only two rushing touchdowns allowed.

The Razorbacks, off consecutive 2-10 seasons, start last year’s true freshman starting guard at center and first-time starting redshirt freshmen guards. They’ll either start a third-year sophomore (injured last season) or last year’s incumbent at right tackle with the lone senior starter at left tackle.

Arkansas has more than a challenge Saturday. Georgia enters with the best defense in the nation and some serious talent on offense, featuring guys like George Pickens, Zamir White, James Cook, etc.

It will be interesting to see how the Bulldogs treat the quarterback position Saturday. Will we see one guy take over the game, or will we see each player get some reps, and who gets the starting nod and why?

Because of the questions surrounding J.T. Daniels’ knee, I suspect D’Wan Mathis will get the start and a majority of the reps, with Daniels and Stetson Bennett seeing a limited number of snaps. We may even see freshman Carson Beck get reps as well.

UGA set to rock new 1980 National Championship throwback jerseys in season opener at Arkansas

Georgia football has announced that the Bulldogs will wear the new 1980 National Championship throwback uniforms on Sept. 26 at Arkansas.

Yesterday, Georgia unveiled two new uniform combinations for the upcoming season.

One was a twist on the familiar favorite ‘blackout’ jerseys seen below, and the other is a great take on the Bulldogs’s 1980 National Championship uniforms, featuring red pants with white stripes and black numbering up top.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Georgia’s second title.

The question is now, what games will we get so see the Bulldog’s wear the new threads in?

The 40th anniversary championship uniforms will be worn week-one versus Arkansas, per the Georgia football Twitter account.

With UGA wearing their new threads when they visit Arkansas on Sept. 26, it makes up for the fact that we won’t get to see the Bulldogs in a season opener in Athens for the second year in a row.

I really like Georgia’ new take on this combination. The pants are absolutely gorgeous.

If there was any way I could buy some, you could catch me in the press box on gameday proudly wearing them.

What do you think of the new look?

Georgia football play of the day – Georgia vs North Carolina (2016)

Watch the Georgia football play of the day here!

It’s Thursday, September 17 and today’s play of the day comes from the 2016 Chickfila Kickoff Game in Atlanta, which featured No. 18 Georgia versus an unranked North Carolina squad, led by future Chicago Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky.

It was coach Kirby Smart’s first game at the helm for UGA and star running back Nick Chubb’s first game back from a serious knee injury.

Teams traded early touchdowns in the first quarter, which made it 7-7 as Georgia held the ball at the North Carolina 19 yard line facing a second down with six yards to go.

Watch this neat sideline view of what happened next here:

Brian Herrien always seemed to find people to run over!

It was a great day on the ground for the Bulldogs. They would rush for 289 yards, with most of them coming from Chubb, who had one of the greatest returns from injury college football has ever seen. He totaled 32 carries for 222 yards with two touchdowns. And Georgia left Atlanta with a 33-24 victory, securing Smart’s first win as UGA head coach.

The Big Ten shifts – decides to play football this fall, kickoff scheduled for Oct. 24

What will Big Ten football look like this fall and how will it compare to the SEC and ACC? Details and analysis here.

The Big Ten made news in early August when league officials decided to cancel all fall sports – including of course, schools’ biggest money-maker, football.

Now, in an official statement Wednesday, the conference announced that they are restarting the fall football season and will return to kickoff set for the weekend of Aug. 23rd.

They have scheduled an 8-game, conference-only season in eight weeks, two games fewer than the SEC’s 2020 slate, with no bye-weeks.

Per the Big Ten:

“The Big Ten Council of Presidents and Chancellors (COP/C) adopted significant medical protocols including daily antigen testing, enhanced cardiac screening and an enhanced data-driven approach when making decisions about practice/competition. The COP/C voted unanimously to resume the football season starting the weekend of October 23-24, 2020.”

It seems that the league office gave-in to the immense pressures to reconsider their decision to cancel football from coaches, players and their families.

There are currently over 300,000 signatures on the We Want To Play movement’s petition to the Big Ten’s original decision, popularized mostly by former Georgia quarterback, now Ohio State Buckeye Heisman hopeful Justin Fields

The real question is now, what will Big Ten football look like compared to that of the SEC? They start a month later and, as mentioned earlier,  have an eight-game lineup in eight weeks with no byes.

Plus, the Big Ten’s policy for an athlete testing positive for Covid-19 is a minimum quarantine of 21 days. So, one outbreak and your season is thrown way off the rails.

Per the Big Ten:

“The earliest a student-athlete can return to game competition is 21 days following a COVID-19 positive diagnosis.”

Add the lay off after the season cancellation and Big Ten teams start at a disadvantage. However, Ohio State should have a straight shot to the playoff because of opt-outs from athletes of programs like Maryland and Michigan State.

Truly an unprecedented time for everyone right now. Check back for more updates as more news regarding the Big Ten’s decision rolls in.

UGA bans on-campus tailgating for upcoming football season

UGA officials have decided to ban on-campus tailgating this season due to concerns surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic.

Last month University of Georgia officials elected to defer the decision whether or not to allow tailgating on campus for the 2020 football season, after deciding to limit Sanford Stadium’s capacity to 20-25%.

Today, UGA Athletics finally released an official statement with their decision regarding tailgating in 2020, just 11 days before kickoff.

“Tailgating has been a part of the gameday tradition for home football games at the University of Georgia for decades. However, due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, tailgating will not be permitted on campus this season.”

While Georgia fans may not have a traditional tailgate experience this season, UGA Athletics said that fans may gather around vehicles in the on-campus parking lots, which will be opened three hours before kickoff.

They are requiring only those who have traveled together, or who plan to sit with each other at the game to be present around the vehicles and will require each person to have their game tickets with them.

Georgia is one of the last SEC schools to announce revamped plans for tailgating amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

LSU, Alabama, Auburn and Florida are some of the schools who have already banned the football tradition from their campuses.

Georgia officials also added a note about off-campus gatherings.

“While we strongly encourage individuals and organizations off campus to follow UGA’s lead in taking appropriate measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, enforcement of social gatherings off-campus remains under the jurisdiction of Athens-Clarke County.”

Georgia football play of the day – Georgia vs Auburn (2007)

Watch the Georgia football play of the day here!

It’s Tuesday, September 15 – only 11 more days until the Bulldogs kickoff versus Arkansas on Sept. 26.

Today’s play of the day comes from the infamous ‘blackout’ game between No. 10 Georgia and No. 17 Auburn at Sanford Stadium in 2007.

With 5:09 remaining in the third quarter, underdog Auburn held a 3-point lead, but the Bulldogs would soon find a spark.

We pick up at Georgia’s second and eight from the Auburn 24 yard line.

Watch what happened here:

You have to love Verne Lundquist’s, “What a cut!”

The Bulldogs would go on to win in style 45-20, behind star running back Knowshon Moreno’s 22 carries for 102 yards and two touchdowns.

And can’t forget this clip . One of the most exciting games in Sanford history featured Soulja Boy:
