Minnesota vs Iowa Game Preview

Why Minnesota Will Win

Iowa doesn’t score.

Oh sure, the 51 hung out on Maryland was sassy, and the defense helped crank things up early in the season, but since the 23-20 win over Penn State the Hawkeyes have scored a grand total of 31 points in three games.

If you’re hanging 17 on Northwestern, there’s an issue.

Minnesota is weird.

It has a Spinal Tap drummer thing happening at running back, but until lsat week against Illinois the ground game kept on working just fine.

Meanwhile, the defense has been fantastic, holding everyone but Nebraska – a 30-23 Gopher win – to 14 points or fewer over six of the last seven games.

Run, dominate the time of possession battle, and keep being good at not turning the ball over. Minnesota can do that.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Iowa Will Win

Iowa’s defense is still strong through the issues, and it got back to taking the ball away in bunches with three picks against Northwestern.

The Hawkeyes have been outstanding against the run, allowing fewer than 100 yards in every game but Penn State (giving up 107) and against Wisconsin (allowing 166). Minnesota doesn’t have to run for 300 yards to win, but it needs to come up with at least 150, and that’s going to be a problem.

Minnesota plays at Iowa’s speed. This should be a grind that comes down to field position, penalties, and one key big play at some point. At home, Iowa isn’t necessarily going to buckle, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Minnesota is strangely awesome on the road this season.

It destroyed Colorado, had no issues with Northwestern, and was terrific against Purdue. Now it gets an Iowa team that can’t throw enough to matter and isn’t getting enough out of the ground game to pick up the slack.

Don’t expect anything fun outside of the Gopher celebration when it holds up the Floyd of Rosedale trophy after an ugly, ugly game with a wee bit more scoring than you might think.

Ohio State vs Purdue Game Preview

Why Purdue Will Win

With a win over then No. 2 Iowa, and after taking down CFP No. 3 Michigan State, who’s playing with more swag right now?

There might have been problems against the Wisconsin defense, but Purdue has won three of its last four games, it’s bowl eligible, and even though there’s still a path to taking the Big Ten West title, it’s playing with house money.

Ohio State is giving up plenty of passing yards, the Boilermaker defensive pressure is good enough to make CJ Stroud hurry a bit, and no quarterback in the Big Ten is playing better over the last few games than Aidan O’Connell.

He threw three picks against the amazing Wisconsin defense, but he hit 75% of his passes over the last four games with eight touchdowns.

He came up with 375 yards against the strong Iowa D, ripped up Michigan State with 536 yards, and now he and WR David Bell get a Buckeye defense that’s allowing close to 250 yards per game through the air.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Ohio State Will Win

Purdue hasn’t played anyone with a passing game like Ohio State is going to bring.

It might take a little time to warm up, and it might not be as consistent as it should be, but Stroud has been fantastic, he’s connecting on a whole lot of big plays, and the O is second in the nation averaging 45 points per game.

Purdue’s secondary is statistically okay, but who’s the great passing quarterback on the schedule so far? Graham Mertz of Wisconsin? Iowa’s Spencer Petras? Notre Dame’s Jack Coan? They’re all good, but none of them are making big things happen like Stroud is.

Yes, the Ohio State defense will give up plenty of yards in this, but there won’t be any Purdue running game and the offensive front will allow just enough plays in the backfield to stall on a few key drives.

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t get too caught up with what happened last week.

The Michigan State defense gave up a ton of yards to Michigan and hadn’t played anyone all that great before getting Purdue – that wasn’t a total shocker.

Nebraska might be 3-7, but it’s been playing relatively well and keeping games tight – Ohio State’s hard 26-17 win over the Huskers wasn’t anything to get into a twist over.

Purdue will get its yards, but the Ohio State offensive machine will ramp up with good balance and more big plays down the field.

Rutgers vs Indiana Game Preview

Why Rutgers Will Win

Forgetting the 52-3 loss to Wisconsin last week, the Rutgers defense hasn’t been bad against mediocre offenses.

It struggled – to be nice – against Michigan State, Ohio State, and the Badgers, but it’s been able to hold just about everyone else in check. Indiana’s offense isn’t doing much of anything, getting stuffed for under 200 yards in two of the last three weeks in losses to Ohio State and Michigan.

Worse yet, the IU D has gone bye-bye – it’s last in the Big Ten in scoring defense all while allowing 400 yards or more in five of the last six games.

Rutgers doesn’t do anything all that well offensively, but if it can win the turnover battle, control the field position fight, and run for 150 yards or more, it should be able to slip by.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Indiana Will Win

The Rutgers offense isn’t doing much of anything.

It HAS to run well to have any shot, and that’s not a given considering it failed to get past 111 yards in five of the last eight games.

The passing attack struggled over the last three games and the O as a whole hasn’t hit 250 yards in two of the last three.

As long as Indiana can control the time of possession battle – it hasn’t been bad at controlling the clock – and if the defense can keep being okay at generating third down stops, this should be a low scoring battle that fits what the Hoosiers need.

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t except anything scintillating, but these two are playing at the same level of mediocrity to make this interesting.

Indiana really doesn’t have enough offense to make anything big happen against a Rutgers D that’s banged up, but should generate two takeaways but it won’t be quite enough.

Indiana has just a wee more of an O, but not enough of one to pull away to make this easy.

Wisconsin vs Northwestern Game Preview

Why Northwestern Will Win

Despite being outplayed overall, the 2020 Northwestern Wildcats came up with five takeaways in the 17-7 win over the Badgers.

The 2019 team lost, but it came up with two takeaways. The 2018 version got three turnovers and won, the 2017 team lost but took it away three times, and after not getting any in 2016, the 2015 Cats forced five turnovers in a 13-7 win.

Want to keep going?

The 2014 Northwestern team took the ball away from Wisconsin four times and the 2013 team came up with three turnovers.

That means in the last eight games between these two, Northwestern has forced 25 takeaways against Wisconsin.

Let’s just say Pat Fitzgerald and his team have figured something out.

The Badgers have chilled on the giveaways after turning it over 17 times in the fist seven games this year, but it’s Wisconsin, it’s Northwestern …

You know what’s coming.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Wisconsin always has a strong defense, but this one is at another level.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Georgia’s D is historically awesome, but it’s giving up 230 yards per game. Oklahoma State has the third-best defense in college football and it’s allowing 277 yards per game.

Wisconsin? 214 yards per game.

2011 Alabama ended up allowing just 184 yards per game in a modern-era all-time great season. No one else since then has finished a season allowing fewer than 250.

No one is running against the Badgers, including Army – Wisconsin allowed a season-most 179 yards against the run-only attack.

The Badgers are No. 1 in the nation in total defense, run defense, third down defense, and they’re fourth in scoring D – which isn’t really fair because the meltdown in the 41-13 loss to Notre Dame was on the offense and special teams – and fifth in pass defense.

Northwestern can’t consistently move the ball until it’s too late, the running game isn’t going anywhere, and worst of all, the run defense is the worst in the Big Ten just as the Badger O line and ground attack has found a groove.

But …

What’s Going To Happen

The turnovers.

That’s it. That’s everything.

Northwestern has the funkiest way against Wisconsin of being totally and completely outplayed yet still comes up with wins because of turnovers, turnovers, turnovers.

However, in this, Wisconsin is going to pound away too much and too well. Meanwhile, the Badger D that’s playing at a whole other level is doing its part with 12 takeaways in the last three games.

This matchup always defies all logic and reason, but assuming the Badgers keep the turnovers to under a gajillion …

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Michigan vs Penn State Game Preview

Why Michigan Will Win

It might not always be perfect or scintillating, but the offense keeps on rolling.

Lost in the loss to Michigan State were the 552 yards of total offense – part of the reason for the jump over the Spartans in the latest College Football Playoff rankings – and last week everything was kept relatively conservative against a bad Indiana team.

The running game leads the Big Ten – even if it’s not as hot as it was to start the season – behind an offensive line that’s playing as well as any in the conference.

The Penn State offense might be okay throwing the ball, but there’s nothing happening on the ground – it hasn’t hit 100 yards in any of the last three games and in five of the last seven. It’s not going to hit 100 yards against the Wolverines.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Penn State Will Win

Sean Clifford has found his groove.

Banged up against Iowa, the Penn State quarterback didn’t do much over a three game stretch, but he bounced back to ball out against Ohio State, and followed up his 361-yard day with 363 yards and three touchdowns against Maryland.

Statistically, the Michigan pass defense has been fine – it hasn’t allowed a touchdown pass in three games – but it hasn’t gone against anyone who can throw. Clifford isn’t Matthew Stafford or anything, but he should press the Wolverine secondary.

On the other side, the run defense has held up well against everyone but Illinois. At home, the combination of a good D on third downs and a strong punting game should keep the field tilted a bit.

What’s Going To Happen

Watch out for the Michigan passing game.

CJ Stroud and the Ohio State passing game went off on the Nittany Lions, and Maryland’s Taulia Tagovailoa was sharp with a 371-yard day last week. Michigan won’t get too much from the passing game, but there will be enough balance to keep things moving.

Penn State will feed off the home energy and come up with a few big plays and nice drives, but the steadiness of the Michigan offense – and a great day from the run D – will be enough to push through.

Kentucky vs Vanderbilt Game Preview

Why Kentucky Will Win

Vanderbilt scored last week and it still wasn’t enough.

This has been an offensively challenged team all year – it’s 128th out of 130 teams averaging just under 15 points per game – with no downfield passing game and not enough positive plays on third downs.

Kentucky is great at keeping things going – it’s strong on third downs – it usually makes teams play its style, and it has the ability to dominate the time of possession battle.

Vanderbilt won’t have the ball all that often, and it’s going to be pressed to take advantage of the opportunities when it does. That’s when the turnovers will come. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Kentucky has the right style to match up with Vanderbilt does.

The Wildcats tried to keep up in the firefight with Tennessee last week in the 45-42 loss, and they showed they had the offensive pop to do it. That’s not its style, though.

The goal is to keep this slow, slug it out in a controlled game without a ton of mistakes and with a big day on the ground, but UK doesn’t take the ball away and it’s a tad hit-or-miss with the rushing attack.

Vanderbilt will want and need to keep this in the 20s, and Kentucky will oblige.

What’s Going To Happen

The Commodores have had two weeks off to rest up, and they needed it after giving up well over 1,000 yards of total offense to Mississippi State and Missouri.

They’re not going to give up 500 yards to the Wildcats, but they’ll be run over for close to 200 yards as they have problems on too many third downs.

Kentucky has a whole slew of flaws, and it can be pushed by a good passing team. That’s not Vanderbilt.

This won’t get ugly, but every time it seems like the Commodores have a shot to get in the game, they won’t.

Arkansas vs LSU Game Preview

Why Arkansas Will Win

The running game should take over in a hurry.

LSU’s run defense has been fine, but inconsistent. It dominated Alabama – allowing just six net yards – but it got ripped apart by Ole Miss and Kentucky rumbled for 330 yards.

The Hog offensive line has been playing well, the running game has hit the 200 yard mark in each of the last four games, and now it’s fourth I the nation and first in the SEC on the ground.

LSU’s offense hasn’t been strong enough to take over if the Hogs are controlling the clock. The Tiger ground attack had one good game against Florida, and that’s been it. Max Johnson can throw, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why LSU Will Win

The Arkansas secondary has been hit hard.

Georgia didn’t have to throw because its running game was too strong, and Arkansas-Pine Bluff didn’t do anything because it’s Arkansas-Pine Bluff, but after a good September the Arkansas pass D hasn’t been all that great.

Mississippi State gets a free pass because all it does is throw, and Ole Miss and Auburn were able to bomb away for close to 300 yards each, too. LSU need Johnson to get into an early groove.

He couldn’t quite come through against Alabama and he wasn’t needed too much against Florida, but he has to move the chains and be able to answer anything the Arkansas offense does.

If he’s not throwing for close to 250 yards there’s a problem.

What’s Going To Happen

LSU isn’t playing all that poorly.

It gave Alabama a massive scare, it kept the Ole Miss game from getting out of hand, it was close against Kentucky, and …

It lost four of its last five games.

There aren’t a ton of big mistakes – there aren’t any penalties and turnovers aren’t an issue – but the Arkansas running game and offensive efficiency will be the story.

It’ll be a night game in Death Valley against an inspired team, but the Hog offense will settle everything down.

Texas A&M vs Ole Miss Game Preview

Why Texas A&M Will Win

The defense has taken its game up several notches.

It wasn’t all that bad over the first part of the season, but everything has kicked in after the win over Alabama with great performances against Missouri and South Carolina before stuffing Auburn to just 226 yards and three points.

The pass defense has been great, the run defense is better, and it’s all working in sync with the offensive side that’s improved the running game since the Bama win.

The offensive line was a massive problem over the first half of the season. It’s still a tad spotty at times, but it blasted away for over 200 rushing yards in each of the last three games.

As good as the A&M defense is, it’s not going to stuff Ole Miss and hold the O do a dead stop. However, that ground game will rip up the porous Rebel run defense, and the offense will have the ball for well over 35 minutes, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Ole Miss Will Win

Can the Rebels crank up the explosion and the tempo to make A&M work a bit?

Control, control, control. Texas A&M was able to beat Alabama in a bit of a shootout, but that’s not how this team works. It’s not built to start bombing away – even when it lost, the games against Arkansas and Mississippi State were low scoring fights.

At home, Ole Miss has to strike quickly, use its offensive balance and deep passing game, and it has to make A&M press. For all of the problems, the Rebels won’t lose the turnover battle – they’re third in the nation in turnover margin.

What’s Going To Happen

The Texas A&M defense will hold up just enough to get out alive.

It’s possible to keep the Rebels from going ballistic. Alabama was able to do it, and Auburn was able to win 31-20 despite giving up over 450 yards. But the Ole Miss O will have a little bit of fun.

But the control of Texas A&M will take over, and it all comes from a huge day from the ground attack. Isaiah Spiller has rolled for over 100 yards in each of the last three games and in four of the last five. The grind will win out over the flash.

South Carolina vs Missouri Game Preview

Why South Carolina Will Win

So what did South Carolina do that was so right against Florida in the stunning 40-17 win?

Hey, running game, welcome to the 2021 season.

The Gamecocks had the talent in the backfield from the start, but it hasn’t been able to get going on a regular basis without more than 153 rushing yards against any FBS team.

Kevin Harris looked like his 2020 self with 128 yards against the Gators, ZaQuandre White took off for 111 yards, and the O went for close to 300 yards in a dominant performance.

The Florida defensive front is a brick wall compared to Missouri’s line.

It’s a bit of an upset that Georgia only ran for 168 yards in its 43-6 win over Mizzou last week, but South Carolina isn’t going to get away from what it wants to do. Run, run, run some more against the nation’s second-worst defense.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Missouri Will Win

That South Carolina offensive performance against Florida wasn’t normal.

The attack really didn’t run all that well all year, there are too many turnovers, and there’s a massive problem on third downs.

No, Missouri’s defense can’t hold up against anything, but the offense can move the chains a bit – at least when it’s not going against Georgia – and the D can force a few takeaways.

The South Carolina run defense has had its issues at times – Tennessee, Texas A&M, and Kentucky all ran without a problem – and this week it has to deal with Tyler Badie. He wasn’t used much against Georgia, but he ran for over 200 yards in two of the three games before that and he should be ready to roll after running just nine times against the Bulldogs. It’ll be up to him to take over the game because …

What’s Going To Happen

Missouri QB Connor Bazelak is still banged up. He missed the Georgia game, but he practiced this week and might have a shot at playing – don’t count on him quite yet. Even so, Missouri should be able to run well and keep the offense moving.

It won’t be enough.

South Carolina will keep the mojo going from the Florida win by running on the porous Tiger D on the way to a sixth win and bowl eligibility.

Georgia vs Tennessee Game Preview

Why Georgia Will Win

The defense really is just that amazing.

No, it’s not technically the No. 1 D in college football – Wisconsin holds that distinction – but this thing really is special.

No one has scored more than 13 points on the Dawgs, the pass defense isn’t allowing a thing, and the defensive line is playing like it was rudely insulted.

It’s not just that the defense holds up against everyone and takes over games. It’s amazing at stuffing teams that get into the red zone, it forces everyone to press, and it takes all the pressure off the offensive side.

As amazing as the Tennessee offense has been, the defense can’t get off the field. Teams are converting close to half of their third down tries against the Vols – the Georgia formula will work just fine.

Don’t take chances, run the ball, rely on the defensive front to take over, and control the clock for close to 40 minutes. However …

Why Tennessee Will Win

Yeah, the Georgia defense is amazing. It hasn’t faced anything like this, though.

Auburn is playing well, but it doesn’t have the high-powered passing game that Tennessee brings. Who else on the schedule can do much on O?

Florida? Sort of, but not really. Kentucky? Arkansas? Yeah, but in a different way. Clemson? Vanderbilt? Not to offense-shame the rest of the SEC, but the Tennessee tempo, speed, and balance should be enough to make the Dawg D work a bit.

Talent-wise, DJ Uiagalelei is the best quarterback Georgia has faced – even if he’s not playing like it yet – but Hendon Hooker might be the most effective passer and playmaker on the Dawg slate. At the very least, this offense at home should be able to take Georgia O out of its comfort zone.

Tennessee will score more than 13 points, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Tennessee will NEVER have the ball.

It’s dead last in college football in time of possession – that’s sort of by design with the way the O plays – but that’s going to be a big, big problem.

Georgia’s defense will look mortal for a few drives, but the offensive side will overcome a tight first half to rumble for big rushing yards as the second half rolls on.

It’s not exactly going to be a scare, but it’ll be the first time when someone does something against this D.
