Utah vs Arizona Game Preview

Why Utah Will Win

Arizona has been crushed by injuries.

On the plus side in a rebuilding year under first year head man Jedd Fisch, a whole slew of young parts are getting meaningful time. On the down side, it took everything possible to get by a Cal team missing more than 20 players in a 10-3 win last week.

The Arizona offense is having an impossible time moving the chains, it’s taking way too much effort to put points on the board – only getting past 19 once this year – and it’s not getting help in any way from turnovers and big plays.

The Wildcats are last in the nation in turnover margin.

Utah has the Pac-12 South there for the taking with wins over Arizona State and UCLA, and now it just has to close strong needing to win two of its last three games – the fire will be there to put this away fast.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Arizona Will Win

The Wildcats got a win. That was everything in a year that really is all about just trying to get things going to build a foundation for the future. Now the pressure is effectively off – that’s what happens when you don’t win a game since 2019.

It’s easier said than done with so many injured players, but this should be a loose team that can take a whole lot of chances.

Utah has the lines to dominate this throughout, but the Arizona pass defense hasn’t been all that bad, there’s just enough pressure into the backfield to matter once in a while, and Utah isn’t hitting on a ton of big downfield plays, but …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Utah just ran for 441 yards on Stanford. It’s not going to do that against the Arizona defensive front, but as you’re reading this it just assume it already has more than 200.

The Ute ground game continues to rock and roll with well over 200 yards in three of the last four games and four of the last six. Arizona won’t be able to hold up, and the near-certain three giveaways aren’t going to help.

Arizona State vs Washington Game Preview

Why Arizona State Will Win

Can Arizona State possibly win the Pac-12 South by winning out and hoping for Utah losses to Oregon and Colorado after being Arizona this weekend?

That’s probably not happening, but there’s still one of the Pac-12’s bigger bowls to play for as the possible No. 3 team from the league by coming up with a few more wins. It starts with getting by a sluggish Washington team that’s playing hard, but isn’t putting enough points.

Scoring points has been like pulling teeth for the Huskies, only busting out against an Arkansas State defense that’s among the worst in the country.

Washington can’t run, can’t stop the run, and Arizona State is coming off a big day on the ground against USC. Oregon’s Travis Dye went off on Washington last weekend, and now it’s Rachaad White’s turn after cranking out 202 yards and three scores on USC.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Washington Will Win

The Washington run defense might be having problems, but the D as a whole allowed 275 yards or fewer in two of the last three games and fewer than 300 yards in three of the last five games.

Yeah, part of the reason is because everyone is running at will, but Washington leads the nation in pass defense allowing fewer than 100 yards in three of the last five games.

There might be a whole slew of problems, but there aren’t a whole lot of penalties and massive mistakes. Washington is among the best in the nation in fewest flags thrown against them, and Arizona State is getting walloped with penalties, committing an average of close to nine per game.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Things aren’t going well for Washington.

It’s struggling on the field, it won’t go bowling unless it wins two of its last three games, and head coach Jimmy Lake is suspended for a knocking one of his players in the helmet.

Now the talk is about whether or not he’ll keep his job after a wildly disappointing season, but the team isn’t playing that poorly – it won two games in a row and pushed Oregon in last week’s loss.

Arizona State will keep with the gameplan by running and running some more.

It’s not going to take a whole lot of chances, getting past a sluggish first half by controlling the lines and the tempo in the second.

Colorado vs UCLA Game Preview

Why Colorado Will Win

The Colorado Buffaloes finally scored.

The Buffs have had a nightmare of a time moving the chains, the passing attack hasn’t worked, and the O is now the third-worst in the nation – and that’s an improvement after putting up 37 points in a shocking win over Oregon State.

What worked? The running game.

For the first time all season – at least against any FBS team – the Colorado offensive front blasted away and 2020 star Jarek Broussard got his first 100-yard game.

Can the Buffs do it again? They don’t have any problem with turnovers, they’re going against a UCLA team that doesn’t bring much of a pass rush, and this would be the game to try out the passing game against a shaky secondary.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why UCLA Will Win

UCLA has the best run defense in the Pac-12.

Utah ran for 290 yards on the Bruins two weeks ago, but it’s pounding away on everyone right now. That’s the only time all season anyone got to 200 yards on this D.

The problem is the pass defense, and that’s just not happening from the Colorado offense. The Buffs could throw just enough to provide a push, but not enough to overcome what UCLA will bring with its offense.

The team played like it needed a rest, and it got one just before the finishing kick. Now the running game that rolled so well for most of the season should ramp back up. Colorado’s run defense isn’t a total disaster, but getting 200 yards shouldn’t be a problem.

UCLA is 5-0 when running for 200, 0-4 when it doesn’t.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

It seems crazy, but 2017 was the last time UCLA went bowling. With QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson expected to be back from a thumb injury, the O should start to be back to normal.

It’ll get there with a win over USC and/or Cal, but it would be nice to get it done now. It’ll do it with a good performance from a balanced offense. The defense won’t have problems – Colorado’s attack just isn’t explosive enough.

Oregon vs Washington State Game Preview

Why Washington State Will Win

A funny thing happened to Washington State after all of the Nick Rolovich drama – the team got better.

It dropped a tough game against BYU, but it won its last four Pac-12 games to be in a position to take the lead in the Pac-12 North race.

What’s going right under interim head coach Jake Dickert?

The defense has been solid against the run, it only allowed more than 400 yards overall in two of the last six games, and it’s doing a phenomenal job of controlling the clock on offense and taking the ball away on the other side.

It’s not about the firepower with Wazzu as much as it is about tempo. There’s no ground game to speak of, but the short-to-midrange passing game is clicking and the D has taken the ball away multiple times in every game but two.

The five takeaways against Arizona State two weeks ago were a big deal.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Oregon Will Win

Oregon doesn’t have a turnover issue.

It’s not air-tight with the ball – QB Anthony Brown is lately good for one puzzling interception – but it’s not giving the ball away enough times to matter. There were a few issues against Cal and UCLA, but other than those two games the Ducks turned the ball over just four times in the other seven games.

Offensively, can Travis Dye keep this going? Washington State has allowed over 200 rushing yards four times on the year and lost three of them. Dye carried the Ducks against Washington with 211 yards, he ran for four touchdowns against UCLA, and he needs to be a steading force because …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Uhhhhhhh, Oregon, it’s time to actually start looking like the No. 3 team in the country.

You see what the CFP just did with Michigan and Michigan State? With Ohio State’s schedule ramping up, get ready for that unless the big impressive wins start coming.

The problem is that Washington State is just good enough to keep that from happening.

Oregon has the NFL defensive types and the all-around speed to keep the midrange quick-hitting passing game from going off, but this is about an offense that has to put away a game with easy.

Every Pac-12 game has been a bit too much of a fight, and this will be that, too, with a Brown interception costing the Ducks an early score and with Washington State constantly pressing with a few good scoring drives to stay in it.

Oregon will win with a good fourth quarter, but it’s not going to be what the College Football Playoff committee is looking for.

Oklahoma vs Baylor Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Is a rested Oklahoma ready for the finishing kick?

No, the schedule hasn’t been all that amazing so far, but it hasn’t been totally awful. Even so, a team in the hunt for the College Football Playoff should be a whole lot stronger than it’s been. However …

There’s a scoreboard for a reason.

OU was awful against Kansas – for a half. Lost in the miserable performance were the 35 points scores in the second half. Also lost is how Oklahoma won their last three games by double-digits and have now scored 52 or more in three of the last four games.

No, the defense hasn’t been strong enough overall, but it takes the ball away and is good at buckling down in the red zone. Yes the team has been wildly inconsistent, but it’s also among the best teams in the country offensively, in passing, on third downs, and there are few attacks with more explosion.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Baylor Will Win

The running game has to be rolling from the start.

Teams tend to get away from grinding it out against Oklahoma because games start to get into shootouts, but it’s possible to run on this group.

Baylor is getting a monster season out of the running back combination of Abram Smith and Trestan Ebner, with Smith on fire with three straight games of 125 yards or more while averaging over seven yards per carry.

The Bears are great against the run, the offensive line has been great, and at home, it should have the consistency and pop to pounce when Oklahoma takes its weekly nap for about 12-20 minutes.

What’s Going To Happen

You know how this works for Oklahoma.

It looks rough for stretches, the defense gives up scoring drives, and it looks like it’s all going to fall apart, and then …

Caleb Williams goes and does something Heisman-worth, the O decides it’s time to kick it all in, and the pop will come with a few big runs and a home run from the passing attack.

West Virginia vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why West Virginia Will Win

Do you think West Virginia will throw well in this or not?

The Mountaineers bombed away on Iowa State and pulled off a shocker. The O didn’t work at all against Oklahoma State and it was a rough 24-3 home loss.

This has been a wildly hit-or-miss Mountaineer team, and even when QB Jarret Doege is on, that doesn’t necessarily mean everything else is working.

But it certainly helps for this group.

Kansas State is on a three-game winning streak partly because it’s not getting bombed on. It was able to get by Nevada, but it’s 0-3 in the Big 12 when it gives up over 300 passing yards.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Kansas State Will Win

The Kansas State passing game is working.

Skylar Thompson doesn’t bomb away for scores, and he likes to check down to RB Deuce Vaughn whenever possible, but the Wildcats have found a nice groove with over 200 passing yards in each of the last five games.

West Virginia likes to live on time of possession – it leads the Big 12 – but when needed, Kansas State can cling on to the ball as well as anyone.

Throw in the strong pass rush against a way-too-leaky Mountaineer offensive front and what should be at least a +1 turnover margin, and there’s a good formula for the Cats.

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas State is already bowl eligible, but West Virginia has to win two out of its last three with Texas and at Kansas to follow.

The Mountaineers need this more, but Kansas State is quietly playing too well.

The Wildcats pushed Oklahoma and weren’t awful in losses to Oklahoma State and Iowa State, and now they seem to be finding a nice balance that’s keeping everything going.

This is a good, tight game that should be in doubt deep into the fourth, with Kansas State moving the chains just a bit better when it absolutely has to.

Iowa State vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

Shhhhh, but Iowa State is playing well and is still knee deep in the mix for a Big 12 title appearance.

The loss at West Virginia was a problem, but it came back roaring with a dominant 30-7 win over Texas. The passing attack is playing well, Breece Hall continues to be Breece Hall, and there shouldn’t be any problems moving the ball on the Red Raiders.

Texas Tech statistically has been fine against the run, but that’s mostly because most teams are throwing at will. The secondary got lit up by Oklahoma’s Caleb Williams as part of a run of 296 or more passing yards allowed in four of the last six games.

Iowa State’s offense will have some fun, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Texas Tech Will Win

As good as the Cyclone offense is, it stalls just a bit too much.

It’s not that great on third downs, the special teams have had their issues over the season, and the defense isn’t always sharp against quarterbacks in a groove.

After dominating over the first part of the season, the Iowa State secondary allowed over 300 yards in three straight games before shutting down Texas to a dead stop.

Texas Tech might be in transition to the Joey McGuire era for 2022, but it’s still Sonny Cumbie’s team for the moment. There will be lots and lots of passing.

What’s Going To Happen

Do the Red Raiders have something in freshman QB Donovan Smith?

He stepped in against Oklahoma two weeks ago and hit 17-of-22 passes for 192 yards and a touchdown with a pick, ran a little bit, and he looked like a guy the new regime might want to think about building around.

Henry Colombi is still in the mix, and Tyler Shough should be back soon from his collarbone injury, but none of those guys play D.

Iowa State’s offense will be too balanced and too consistent. The time off for the Red Raiders will help a bit, but the Cyclone experience will come through in a must-have game before dealing with Oklahoma.

Texas vs Kansas Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

Seriously, Texas?

Just when it seemed like it was going to take over the Big 12, and college football overall, it had a horrible second half against Oklahoma and fell apart since then.

The defense has been lousy, the offense went in the tank in the 30-7 loss to Iowa State, and …

This is what Kansas is for.

Yeah, the Jayhawks looked fantastic against Oklahoma – at least offensively – but the defense continues to be the worst in the nation at coming up with third down stops, the defense can’t do anything against the run, no team in the country is worse at generating pressure into the backfield.

This is when the Longhorns have to get its offense up and ready to go, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Kansas Will Win

Has Texas simply lost it?

Granted, it played the four best teams in the Big 12 over this four-game losing streak, but to only come up with 207 yards against Iowa State and haven’t played with enough focus or crispness.

The run defense has been steadily awful, allowing well over an average of 200 yards per game over the last four and giving up just over 200 yards per game on the season.

Kansas might be struggling to get the ground game going, but it has to give it a shot. The goal is to shorten the game, control the clock, and try to prevent the big plays from putting this away fast.

What’s Going To Happen

And now the Kansas future is being messed up by this season.

The hope was to redshirt promising quarterback Jalon Daniels, but the Jayhawks are quickly running out of options thanks to injuries.

He’s enough of a wild-card – assuming he sees time – to get the offense moving, but can Texas get its stuff together enough to focus on the one game it must have to keep bowl hopes alive?

It might not be what the team was hoping for a month ago, but at this point in a disappointing run, take the win. The explosion of the Longhorn offense will take over after a lifeless first half.

Oklahoma State vs TCU Game Preview

Why TCU Will Win

Jerry Kill is a hell of a football coach.

TCU had to try moving on after it parted ways with head coach Gary Patterson, and it managed to come up with its most amazing win of the season with a 30-28 shocker over Baylor.

So what went right?

QB Max Duggan couldn’t go, but Oklahoma transfer Chandler Morris went off with 461 passing yards and two scores with Quentin Johnston and Taye Barber combining for close to 200 receiving yards.

Oklahoma State’s defense has been incredible, but the lone loss of the season came the only time it allowed over 300 yards – Iowa State’s Brock Purdy went off in a 24-21 win.

TCU is going to bomb away to give it a shot, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The Oklahoma State defense is just that good.

It might be a program known for its offense, but the D continues to be good enough to potentially win the Big 12.

No one’s running on this group – it’s allowing just 86 yards per game and hasn’t given up 100 yards in any of the last three games. If TCU isn’t throwing well, the offense isn’t going to move.

Holding Kansas to three points is one thing – it’s Kansas – but stuffing West Virginia in a 24-3 victory in Morgantown is another. TCU might have bombed away on Baylor, but it doesn’t have the steady attack to keep steadily pushing.

Oklahoma State is too good at coming up with big plays in the backfield, and …

What’s Going To Happen

The TCU defense isn’t good enough.

Even if the offense goes off, the defense isn’t going to slow down the Oklahoma State O if it needs to open it up.

TCU isn’t generating enough or a pass rush, the run defense has been rocky, and the secondary has allowed well over 200 yards in each of the last five games.

TCU will be pesky, but Oklahoma State is the real deal – especially defensively.

Michigan State vs Maryland Game Preview

Why Michigan State Will Win

Maryland is good against the bad teams, and AWFUL against the good ones – at least since the 30-24 win over West Virginia to start the season.
