Colorado State vs Wyoming Game Preview

Why Colorado State Will Win

Colorado State has been so close to pulling off a huge season.

It battled hard over the last two weeks in losses to Utah State and Boise State, but two turnovers were a problem against the Aggies – they haven’t been an issue overall – and the D that didn’t allow over 350 yards since the opener against South Dakota State got hit with 430 against the Broncos.

Wyoming’s offense isn’t about to go off.

There’s no passing attack to worry about, and scoring points for this Cowboy team is like pulling teeth, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Wyoming Will Win

Wyoming ran well against San Jose State.

It was a loss – the fourth in a row – but the ground game worked well, the offensive day overall was the best of the season, and it all came down to key stops and turnovers.

Wyoming has a crippling giveaway issue. The offense and team aren’t good enough to afford mistakes, and the 13 turnovers in the last five games have been disastrous.

Utah State doesn’t force takeaways.

It was able to come up with six over a mid-season two-game stretch, but that’s it. As long as Wyoming can play its style, slow things down, and now screw up, it should stay in this. But …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Wyoming is having a wee bit of an issue scoring.

The O hasn’t put up more than 21 in any of the last four games, but it’s not like Colorado State is lighting it up, either.

It’s going to be a low scoring, tight game, but the Colorado State run defense that’s been solid all year will force the Cowboys to throw, and that’s when bad things will happen.

Utah State vs New Mexico State Game Preview

Why Utah State Will Win

New Mexico State’s offense is playing relatively well. It’s not playing like Utah State’s is.

It might have been an inconsistent year overall, but the Aggies are on a three-game winning streak with the passing game that’s clicking, the defense that’s holding on in tight games, and with just enough of a running game when it needs it.

The New Mexico State secondary will get bombed on. There’s no need for QB Logan Bonner to take any big chances, but the big plays will be there.

There can’t be any panic, there’s no need to press. NMSU will give up the deep shots as the game goes on – if Utah State doesn’t decide to run for 200 yards. But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why New Mexico State Will Win

It’s not like the Utah State defense is stopping anyone cold.

The secondary gives up a whole slew of big plays – it’ll get hit for well over 250 in this, and more like 300 – as long as Jonah Johnson gets back into his rhythm.

He struggled against Hawaii, but he threw for over 900 yards with seven touchdowns in a three game stretch before the loss in Honolulu two weeks ago.

This has to be a shootout, and the home Aggies have to keep up.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

The home Aggies being a key.

New Mexico State hasn’t played in Las Cruces since September 25, and this is just the third home game since kicking things off in August.

Utah State’s defense will give up enough points and scoring plays to matter, but it won’t have too many issues against one of the worst defenses in the country.

Boise State vs Fresno State Game Preview

Why Boise State Will Win

The defense isn’t the normal Boise State defense.

It’s been fine overall – it’s only allowing 22 points per game – but the pass D is just okay, and it’s having a few issues against the run, and the team is still finding ways to win.

It starts with a good enough passing game to keep things moving. Third down conversions mean everything-  it leads the Mountain West – and then there’s the big key with this team …

Turnovers.

Boise State beat BYU with four takeaways. It crushed a solid UTEP team with six. It blew out Utah State with three. It’s feast or famine, but Boise State can take it away in bunches, and Fresno State has three turnovers or more in three games. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Fresno State Will Win

Boise State isn’t good enough to overcome its own mistakes.

Two turnovers against Air Force … loss.

Three turnovers against Nevada … loss.

Two turnovers against Oklahoma State … tough loss.

Fresno State’s defense has been on fire lately, coming up with ten takeaways in the last three games, pulling off massively important wins over San Diego State, Nevada, and Wyoming.

Boise State has a solid D, but it doesn’t have the overall firepower to keep up with the Fresno State attack that’s balanced, explosive, and will get to 450 yards of total O.

Boise State will have to work to get to 400.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

It will be one of the most fun games and environments in college football this Saturday.

The place will be sold out and rocking as Fresno State can all but end Boise State’s Mountain West title hopes while taking a huge step forward to trying to secure the West.

Again, it’ll come down to turnovers. It won’t be a shootout, but Fresno State has more offensively to pull this off in the Mountain West’s big showcase game so far.

UNLV vs New Mexico Game Preview

Why UNLV Will Win

UNLV has been so, so, so close to finally coming up with a big win.

And then Nevada happened.

The Rebels were never in the game in a 51-20 rivalry loss, but they had San Jose State in trouble and kept Fresno State, UTSA, Eastern Washington, and Utah State very, very close.

They’re going to keep New Mexico close.

The Rebels are playing well enough with a decent passing game, and they’ve got the running back in Charles Williams – even if they don’t get him going well enough – but they just keep screwing up too much.

Enter a New Mexico team that’s the worst in America on third downs, doesn’t keep things moving, has the third-worst O in college football and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why New Mexico Will Win

The defense has been strangely good.

The offense just can’t get anything moving, but the run defense has been okay and it hasn’t been gouged too badly by anyone through the air.

The Lobos don’t necessarily control the clock, but they’ve got a way of keeping everything close and bogging games down.

They can’t keep up any pace, but if they can keep this in the teens – UNLV and its offense that averages under 300 yards per game might oblige – then they can wait for the inevitable late Rebel mistake.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

UNLV will get its first win since November 30th of 2019.

New Mexico has to win the turnover battle – that’s a problem considering it gave it up ten times in four games before an air-tight performance against Wyoming – and it has to keep the UNLV offense from taking over.

Moving the ball hasn’t been that huge a problem lately for the Rebels, at least through the air.

New Mexico’s can’t score when it gets its chances. The kicking game isn’t bad, but it has exactly two touchdowns in the red zone since September 11th.

San Jose State vs Nevada Game Preview

Why San Jose State Will Win

Can the San Jose State defense hold up against Carson Strong and the Nevada passing game?

Sort of.

It’s going to take a big effort from the pass rush to at least hurry Strong, but but the pass defense that hasn’t been torched too badly by anyone all year has to hold up.

USC wasn’t able to get to 260 yards, neither was Western Michigan, and only one team was able to get to 300 – New Mexico State.

It’s not that Nevada can’t do anything else, but … it can’t do anything else. There’s no consistent running game to fall back on.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Nevada Will Win

Get up early and this is done.

San Jose State is a fighter. It’s able to push its way though tough spots and get close wins, but it won’t be able to mount much of a comeback with an offense that doesn’t get enough big pass plays down the field.

The Spartans like to balance everything out, the running game has to work, and it can’t get down fast. They’re 3-0 when they run for 200 yards or more, and Nevada’s defense is just good enough up front to keep that from happening.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

San Jose State doesn’t control the ball or the clock well enough to pull this off.

It’ll get the pass rush going and the defense will keep this from getting out of hand, but the offense won’t be able to keep up the pace. This is a Spartan team that needs to keep the game in the 20s, and Nevada won’t oblige.

San Diego State vs Hawaii Game Preview

Why San Diego State Will Win

Can the defense get its groove back?

It’s still among the best in the country, it’s still a killer against the run, and it’s still able to control games by not missing a tackle, but that all went bye-bye in a 30-20 loss to Fresno State.

The run defense wasn’t awful, but it gave up over 300 yards and did what it couldn’t – it made the offense had to try.

That’s not going to happen this week. The Hawaii offense can throw a bit, but the the ground game needs to get going right away – it ran for over 200 yards in a strong stretch of three wins in four games, including against Fresno State – and that’s not going to work against this D.

San Diego State won’t have two bad defensive games in a row. But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Hawaii Will Win

What’s the San Diego State quarterback situation like?

Everyone’s ready for the Will Haskell era to get going already, but Lucas Johnson will still be the main man for the offense – as long as he doesn’t screw up.

To be fair, all fits together. If the D isn’t working, the O has to press, and then the mistakes come – that’s not Johnson’s game. Against Fresno State the San Diego State offense turned the ball over three times, and that was it.

The Hawaii defense has to be able to come up with a slew of big plays. At home it forced 14 takeaways in four games and went 3-1 – including a win over Fresno State. However …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Hawaii has its own turnover problems.

It gave the ball up ten times over the last three weeks and didn’t have the D to overcome the issues.

San Diego State will get a nice game out of the defense, the running game that stalled over the last three weeks will get to 200 again, and the team will be back to normal. It won’t be a fun watch, but it’ll be a good performance.

Utah vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Utah Will Win

Can Stanford run the ball? No?

Then what are we doing here?

Utah is simple. Run the ball for 200 yards or more on Utah, beat Utah.

San Diego State did it. Oregon State did it, and so did BYU – the Utes lost all three games. Who else ran for 200 yards on the Ute D?

No one, and Utah won all five of those games.

Stanford ran for over 200 yards on Vanderbilt and that’s the only time the ground game worked all season. It ran for 156 yards total in the last three games.

Yeah that’s just a stat, but it goes to what takes Utah out of its style and rhythm. When the defensive front is holding up, everything else on this team works.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Stanford Will Win

Okay, so Stanford won’t do much on the ground against the Utah D. However, it’s got enough of a passing attack to make things interesting, and it’s getting Utah on the road.

For whatever reason – beyond the inability to stop the run – all of Utah’s losses came on the road, and the one time it came up with a road victory was against a USC program in turmoil.

Stanford has the type of team that will keep pressing with the passing game, will hang around for a full four quarters, and it’ll take advantage of that one opportunity to make something happen.

It went four straight games without a turnover, and then it melted down with eight in the last three games – all losses. Utah will apply the pressure, but it doesn’t take the ball away enough.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Tanner McKee is banged up.

The Stanford quarterback has been questionable all week – at best – and no matter what his status is, there’s just no running game to pick up the slack.

Utah isn’t going to get too funky here. Rely on the defense, get a few early scores, rely on the defense some more, and don’t take any big chances …

And rely on the defense.

Cal vs Arizona Game Preview

Why Cal Will Win

There’s a whole lot about this team that’s up in the air right now, but …

The offense has found its groove just when it seemed like the season was over.

All of a sudden, the inconsistent attack came up with an almost perfect balance, generating 200 yards both rushing and passing in wins over Colorado and Oregon State.

The Bears are good at maintaining control. They own the time of possession battle, they’re great at coming up with third down conversions, and rather offensive line is solid at keeping defenses out of the backfield.

Arizona’s offense kept on pushing in the 41-34 loss to USC – it was getting rocked early – but it’s way too inconsistent. Cal should be able to own the lines, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Arizona Will Win

How many players are missing from Cal – and who are they – after having several reported plays into COVID protocol?

Forgive how gross it is to go back to 2020 mode and analyze a football game based off a still-raging global pandemic.

Even if everything was normal, Arizona is playing better.

It’s wildly inconsistent thanks to a slew of young players needing to rise up, little depth, and not enough stars on the lines, but QB Will Plummer is playing like a keeper.

Hurt for a while and struggling through through too many games, he battled against USC with 264 yards and should keep on throwing in this to make up for a rough running game.

Cal can be thrown on – allowing over 200 yards in every game but the win over Colorado – and the Wildcats are going to give it a try.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Arizona has been way, way overdue to finally get a win.

It played well for 40 minutes against Oregon before the roof caved in. It should’ve been competitive against Colorado, and wasn’t. It pushed USC and should’ve gotten past Washington.

Even if everything was normal, this would be the game for a still-fighting Arizona team to finally get it done on pure effort – as long as it can keep all the little mistakes to a minimum.

Oregon State vs Colorado Game Preview

Why Oregon State Will Win

Don’t let the 29 points against Oregon fool you – Colorado’s offense isn’t doing enough to pull this off if Oregon State’s offense can get going early.

The Buffs can’t run the ball, and the one offensive explosion against an FBS team came in a blowout over a winless Arizona a few weeks ago.

The offense is getting most of the blame – it’s last in the country in total yards – but the defense isn’t helping the cause without enough of a pass rush and not enough takeaways.

Oregon State has been inconsistent – the loss last week to Cal hurt – but the Pac-12-leading running game has been terrific behind an offensive line that’s been outstanding.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Colorado Will Win

For all of Colorado’s problems and issues, it got the job done against Arizona  and was able to throw a bit in the blowout loss to Oregon.

That’s looking for a silver lining, but at least they were signs of life over the last few weeks with two games in three of over 300 yards of total offense – that’s not the norm for this attack.

Oregon State has a massive turnover problem lately. The three against Cal were bad, the two in the loss to Washington State hurt, and now the Beavers are -5 in turnover margin over the last three games after being +4 – and without losing the turnover battle – in the first five games.

Colorado has done a decent job of not screwing up with four of the six turnovers coming in two games.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Can Colorado salvage something out of this season by screwing up the Beavers?

Oregon State is still deep in the hunt for the Pac-12 North title – it’ll win the division by winning out and getting a Washington State loss over the final month.

First, it has to get past the rough loss at Cal, but it hasn’t been great on the road.

The offense will be balanced, the O line will take over early on, and Colorado’s offense won’t be able to do enough without the defense generating a slew of takeaways.

Oregon vs Washington Game Preview

Why Oregon Will Win

Alright, Oregon. It’s on.

Yeah, getting the No. 4 slot in the first round of College Football Playoff rankings was strong, but they need to start winning and winning impressively considering the rest of the schedule isn’t that amazing – no Pac-12 teams in the CFP top 25 – and with Ohio State’s slate about the ramp up.

Oregon likes to make things interesting, but QB Anthony Brown is playing well enough – he threw for over 600 yards in the last two games with three touchdown passes last week against Colorado – his accuracy has improved, and he’s been able to rebuild from the loss to Stanford.

Washington doesn’t have an explosive enough offense – a comeback against Arizona aside – to keep up if the Ducks can get out fast.

Scoring is an issue for the Dawgs – they haven’t been above 24 points in any of the last four games – and the run D has been sketchy, but …

The Washington defense is the best in the nation against the pass.

That’s partly because teams spend so much time running on the UW defensive front, but but it gave up two touchdown passes to Cal, two more to UCLA, and that’s been it.

In the four wins, the D has come up with seven interceptions and just one in the four losses.

Oregon has been. to be nice about it – inconsistent.

It’s winning, but there have been a few too many defensive lapses, there aren’t enough big plays on third downs, and its own pass defense has been hit for more than 220 yards by everyone but Stony Brook.

What’s Going To Happen

Is this when Washington makes a gigantic statement in the Pac-12 title chase?

It might have been a disappointing year so far, but one win in this and the Ducks are back in the back in what would be a log jam in the hunt for the North.

It would also end the Pac-12 dream of getting a team into the College Football Playoff.

Oregon hasn’t always been smooth, but it has the offense that Washington doesn’t. The Huskies will keep this close for more than a half, but the Duck D will rise up with stop after stop in the fourth quarter to get out alive.
