When CFP rankings are released, what to know for Alabama football

Alabama football will soon learn its place in the latest CFP rankings, and we’ll get a look at the 12-team playoff bracket as it stands now.

Over the past couple of weeks, the Alabama Crimson Tide have simply done everything that they needed to do when it comes to keeping their hopes for the College Football Playoff alive, and that is to win.

Well, that is exactly what Alabama did this past Saturday with a 52-7 victory over the Mercer Bears, and as a result, will likely see their ranking rise once again.

So, before we find out just where Alabama sits now, let’s take a look at when the latest College Football Playoff rankings will be released this upcoming Tuesday night, as well as how you can watch:

Alabama football College Football Playoffs projection

With the Crimson Tide continuing their winning ways, as well as the fact that some teams above Alabama lost Saturday, the program should be in for a rise once again Tuesday night. Currently ranked as the No. 10 team, as well as the No. 10 seed, I’ll say that Alabama will come in at either No. 7 or No. 8 in the latest rankings’ release.

How many teams are in CFP 2024?

For the first time, there will be 12 teams participating in the College Football Playoffs. There are five automatic bids for each of the Power Four conference champions and one to the highest-ranked Group of Five champion. The remaining seven slots are given to the seven at-large teams.

How does the College Football Playoff format work?

The top four seeds will be on a bye as the CFP kicks off. The next four highest-seeded teams will host on-campus playoff games as follows:

  • No. 5 vs No. 12, winner will play No. 4
  • No. 6 vs No. 11, winner will play No. 3
  • No. 7 vs No. 10, winner will play No. 2
  • No. 8 vs No. 9, winner will play No. 1

Where Clemson football stands in ESPN’s BCS-style rankings

Clemson ranks higher here than in the CFP rankings.

The newly expanded 12-team College Football Playoff format is proving tricky to navigate, even for the CFP committee, with surprising placements and unexpected shifts in the rankings.

This year, the playoff will seed the top four-ranked conference champions as automatic 1-4 seeds with a bye, followed by at least one additional conference champ and up to seven at-large bids. ESPN’s “BCS-style” predictor—using the old BCS ranking formula for comparison—has been a decent gauge of committee rankings over the years, but things look a lot different in the new CFP setup, resulting in some unexpected spots.

Clemson football sit at No. 20 in the CFP rankings, but the ESPN model would place them at 16th, a noticeable bump from their current playoff position. Conversely, Miami, currently at 9th in the CFP, would only be at No. 12 under the BCS-style rankings. While four and three-spot differences might not seem like much, it is a massive differential considering what’s at stake.

Bill Connelly from ESPN analyzed the implications of the Miami-Clemson dynamic. Even with the Hurricanes’ recent upset loss, Miami still holds the highest odds of reaching the ACC Championship, likely facing SMU or Clemson if they make it. Connelly noted that Miami’s playoff hopes remain, even with a significant odds drop following the loss. They now have just under a 50% chance of reaching the ACC title game, compared to a strong 30-point lead over SMU in the title odds just a week prior.

Clemson’s playoff picture, however, is complicated by the CFP’s tiebreaker rules. Both Miami and SMU hold the advantage over Clemson in conference tiebreakers because they defeated Louisville earlier in the season—a team Clemson struggled against. With the “record against common opponents” tiebreaker hurting Clemson, the Tigers need Miami to stumble again or for SMU to drop two games, potentially opening a path for Clemson to grab a spot in the ACC Championship.

Looking ahead, the Tigers’ postseason fate hangs on how the final stretch of the season unfolds. Miami still faces a tough road game at Syracuse, while SMU has three remaining matchups that could shake up the standings.

There’s a lot at stake for Clemson fans, but they’ll need some help from others to make it to the playoffs.

If they do make it, the Tigers will have a real chance to shock many.

Greg McElroy on ‘brand bias’ keeping Clemson in the College Football Playoff rankings

McElroy has had a lot to say about the Tigers of late.

As Clemson football checked in at No. 20 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, ESPN analyst Greg McElroy expressed skepticism over the Tigers’ spot, even questioning if they should be ranked at all.

McElroy argued that Clemson’s football’s record and recent performances, particularly losses to Louisville and Georgia, don’t warrant their Top 25 inclusion. He emphasized that while Clemson’s past success under Dabo Swinney has bolstered their brand, this season has shown struggles against top competition. This comes a week after McElroy was already harping on how the Tigers shouldn’t be ranked.

“Clemson is at 20. I’m not sure they should be ranked, if you want my personal opinion,” McElroy said. “Not because I don’t think Clemson is capable. They’ve beat a lot of really good teams convincingly — well, I take that back. They’ve beat some solid teams convincingly, but the two really good teams they’ve played, they’ve not been competitive, against Georgia and Louisville. So if Clemson were to have been a little lower, I wouldn’t have had a problem with that. If they had been outside the Top 25, I would have understood as well.”

McElroy specifically pointed out that Clemson’s best win is against a 5-4 Virginia team, which he views as insufficient for their current ranking. He also cited brand bias, suggesting that Clemson is benefiting from their historical reputation. He raised similar critiques earlier in the season, suggesting that Clemson’s inconsistency makes them undeserving of a Top 25 position, especially when compared to other ACC teams with more impressive wins, like Miami and SMU.

It’s always interesting when an analyst calls out bias, as a lot of them are filled with their own. If we want to go down that rabbit hole, we can always find countless situations where an SEC guy like McElroy is biased towards ‘his’ conference. McElroy being on the call for the Clemson vs. Pittsburgh game makes things all the more interesting.

Clemson needs a strong showing in their upcoming games, starting with Pitt, to prove they belong in the rankings. The Tigers remain hopeful of securing a high enough ranking for the expanded playoff format, though McElroy insists that recent losses and a lack of standout victories are holding them back.

Four Big Ten teams, Wisconsin’s upcoming opponent lead Week 11 College Football Playoff rankings

Four Big Ten teams, Wisconsin’s upcoming opponent lead Week 11 College Football Playoff rankings

Four Big Ten teams land in the top five of the latest College Football Playoff rankings after Week 11 of the 2024 season.

The Oregon Ducks (10-0, 7-0 Big Ten) lead the way at No. 1, followed by Ohio State (8-1, 5-1 Big Ten) at No. 2, Penn State (8-1, 5-1 Big Ten) at No. 4 and Indiana (10-0, 7-0 Big Ten) at No. 5.

The Ducks, who are currently favored to capture the Big Ten title, will grab the No. 1 seed in the projected bracket based on those rankings. Ohio State is down at No. 5 as the top at-large team, while Penn State and Indiana are at No. 6 and No. 7, respectively.

The updated 12-team bracket gives first-round byes to the four highest-ranked conference champions. The No. 5 seed plays No. 12, No. 6 plays No. 11, and so on — all first-round games on the campus of the higher-ranked team.

Once the field is cut to eight teams, the participants populate top bowl matchups including the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl and Cotton Bowl.

Wisconsin is obviously far from contention with a 5-4 record through nine games. The Badgers have lost to several projected playoff participants — No. 10 Alabama and No. 4 Penn State. Most significantly, the team hosts No. 1 Oregon at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday.

The Badgers will be looking for their first win over an AP (and CFP) No. 1-ranked team since they defeated No. 1 Ohio State in 2010. A win would shake-up the national landscape with little time remaining before the conclusion of the regular season.

Where’s Ohio State in latest College Football Playoff bracket? Full playoff picture after Week 11

Ohio State remained at No. 2 in the latest College Football Playoff Rankings. Here’s a playoff picture for the Buckeyes. #GoBucks

We’re now eleven weeks into the college football season and that means we have an idea of where Ohio State when it comes to the landscape of the 2024 season. The Buckeyes beat Penn State on the road two weeks ago to boost its resumé and remain right in the thick of things, even after the loss to now No. 1 Oregon a few weeks ago.

Ohio State debuted at No. 2 when the first College Football Playoff rankings were announced last week, so even another loss would seem to have OSU in good shape with getting an invite to the inaugural 12-team playoff we’re all about to witness at the end of this season. The Buckeyes stayed in that spot when the latest CFP rankings were unveiled on Tuesday.

The format is an interesting one, and since it’s the first year of all the fun, we thought we break down where Ohio State would be in the playoff bracket if it were to end before any further games are played.

So … here we go.

College Football Playoff bracket: Who’s in, who’s out

Where is Georgia ranked in this week’s CFP ranking?

Georgia football’s College Football Playoff positioning leaves UGA on the outside looking in

With the second College Football Playoff bracket projection coming out, people wondered where the Georgia Bulldogs would land after their 28-10 loss to No. 11 Ole Miss Rebels. Well, the committee ranked the Georgia Bulldogs No. 12 behind No. 10 Alabama and No. 11 Ole Miss. That means Georgia is out of the playoff picture for the first time since their loss in the SEC championship to Alabama last season.

It’s a significant turn of events for the Bulldogs, who have had impressive wins against the No. 20 Clemson Tigers and the No. 5 Texas Longhorns but lost to No. 10 Alabama and No. 11 Ole Miss .

Inconsistency has been Georgia’s downfall in the rankings and it caught up to them in last week’s matchup. This inconsistency has primarily been on offense. Now, it is time for this team to string their best performances to have a chance within the playoff.

After ‘Separation Saturday’ Texas Longhorns move up in the College Football Playoff Bracket.

Georgia and Miami misery translates into joy for the Texas Longhorns. Thanks to losses by the ‘Canes and Bulldogs on Saturday, the Horns move up two spots in the college football playoff rankings. Texas now sits No. 3 in the rankings and are in position to be a No. 2 seed in the bracket, which would give UT a first round bye.

Miami moved down to No. 9 in the rankings after losing 28-23 to Georgia Tech. But as the highest ranked ACC team, the Hurricanes would receive a first round bye and the No. 4 seed in the bracket.

Georgia’s 28-10 loss to Ole Miss moved Georgia down to No. 12 in the rankings and on the outside looking in for the bracket. Ole Miss moves up to No. 11 in the ranking and get a No. 11 seed after the win over the Bulldogs.

Oregon and Ohio State remained No. 1 and No. 2 respectively. The Ducks would get the No. 1 seed and a bye, while the Buckeyes are relegated down to the No. 5 seed and would play Boise State in the first round.

The SEC and the Big Ten each have four teams in the 12-team college football bracket. The Big 12 and ACC each have one. Boise State gets in as the fifth conference champion and join independent Notre Dame to fill out the 12 spots.

How the College Football Playoff bracket would look after the selection committee’s second rankings

We’re a long way from the final rankings, but here’s the CFP bracket after the second rankings.

The College Football Playoff selection committee released its second top-25 rankings of the season ahead of the first 12-team playoff, and unsurprisingly, the Oregon Ducks are still the No. 1 team.

Of course, there are still many games and multiple weeks before the season ends with conference championship weekend, and that means the rankings and playoff picture could drastically change between now and then. After the conference title games, the CFP committee will announce the 12 playoff teams on Selection Sunday on December 8.

But for now, here’s a look at where each team would be seeded in the 12-team College Football Playoff bracket if the playoff began today.

Penn State ranked No. 4 in latest CFB Playoff Rankings

Penn State moved up in this week’s College Football Playoff rankings.

Penn State has moved up two spots in this week’s College Football Playoff rankings and remains in the driver’s seat for a potential home playoff game in December. Penn State is ranked no. 4 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings released by the selection committee on Tuesday night. That currently puts Penn State in a position to be the No. 6 seed in the playoff field this year, giving the Nittany Lions a home playoff game against an SEC opponent.

Penn State started off at No. 6 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings a week ago. However, a projected playoff field would have given Penn State a No. 7 ranking with the top four seeds reserved for the highest-ranked conference champions.

The top 12 teams as of Nov. 12

Here is what the top 12 looks like in the second release of the College Football Playoff rankings this season:

  1. Oregon
  2. Ohio State
  3. Texas
  4. Penn State
  5. Indiana
  6. BYU
  7. Tennessee
  8. Notre Dame
  9. Miami
  10. Alabama
  11. Ole Miss
  12. Georgia

If the season ended today, here are the first-round matchups

  • 5. Ohio State vs. 12. Boise State (Mountain West Conference leader)
  • 6, Penn State vs. 11. Ole Miss
  • 7. Indiana vs. 10. Alabama
  • 8. Tennessee vs. 9. Notre Dame

Boise State is ranked no. 13 in the selection committee’s rankings this week, but the Broncos could nab the no. 12 seed as a Mountain West Conference champion. The four top seeds are reserved for the four highest-ranked conference champions but a fifth spot in the field is reserved for the fifth highest-ranked conference champion. But that fifth conference champion gets slotted according to rankings, and is given the 12th seed if ranked outside the top 12. In this scenario, Boise State would block Georgia in the playoff field.

In the current projections, Penn State would host Ole Miss in a rematch of last season’s PEach Bowl, which Penn State lost to the Rebels in Atlanta.

Penn State will visit Purdue this weekend with the hopes of maintaining its position in the playoff hunt with just a few games remaining in the regular season. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
