When do CFP rankings come out? Date, time for Alabama football

Alabama football will soon learn its place in the latest CFP rankings of the 2024 season, and we’ll get a look at the 12-team playoff bracket.

Alabama football fans, the time has now officially come to see whether or not the Crimson Tide officially make the College Football Playoff (CFP).

Yes, after a full regular season of action, the 9-3 overall Crimson Tide sat at No. 11 in the latest CFP rankings entering championship week, and sat back to watch conference champions be crowned across the country, all the while Alabama did not play.

Entering these games as well, there was a certain result that Alabama needed to happen in order to secure a CFP spot entering Saturday, and if that went the other way, then the Crimson Tide’s fate is solely in the committee’s hands.

So, just when is the official bracket set to be revealed for the CFP? Let’s take a look at everything you need to know:

Alabama football College Football Playoffs projection

As mentioned previously, Alabama entered Saturday sitting as the No. 11 seed in the CFP bracket as the final non-conference champion in the field. Alabama’s CFP fate depends on the outcome of the Clemson vs. SMU game in the ACC Championship on Saturday night, which at the time of writing, has yet to take place.

If SMU wins, then Alabama is likely in the field as the No. 11 seed. If Clemson wins, then Alabama’s fate will be decided in the selection show Sunday between the Crimson Tide and SMU for the final CFP spot.

Ohio State only falling to the sixth spot of the latest CFP rankings after Michigan loss confused fans

Ohio State only falling to the sixth spot in the latest CFP rankings confused fans.

Ohio State tumbled down the fifth College Football Playoff rankings of 2024, but some fans didn’t think it was as long enough a fall as deserved.

The Buckeyes’ Saturday loss to archrival Michigan sent the program from second to sixth in the rankings behind schools like Oregon, Texas, Penn State, Notre Dame and Georgia.

However, Miami suffered an even more brutal fall out of the 2024 College Football Playoff bracket entirely after suffering its second loss to a better team in Syracuse than Ohio State had in its second loss to Michigan.

Some folks, particularly SEC fans, felt this was an unjust placement for the Buckeyes and wanted to see Ohio State further down the rankings after the Michigan defeat.

Heck, even Top Gun: Maverick actor Danny Ramirez was confused.

Ohio State lost yet another game to Michigan, this time in historic and unbelievable fashion at home, and as such, dropped a few spots from No. 2 down to No. 6, but still safely in the field.

This year is the first season we’ll have the 12-team playoff so we like to give you the full picture of where things stand with Ohio State and others in and around the CFP field.

So … here we go again.

Mario Cristobal picked the worst time to declare SEC bias over as Alabama jumps Miami in CFP rankings

Timing!

Miami coach Mario Cristobal has never been great at clock management, and that popped up in a very unexpected way on Tuesday.

Ahead of the College Football Playoff selection committee putting Alabama ahead of Miami in its latest rankings, Cristobal hyped about his team and the ACC’s chances to stack up against the rest of the SEC on the ACC Network.

“I think that [SEC] bias is coming to an end,” Cristobal said during an interview about the rising ACC compared to the SEC as to how they’ll be ranked… right before the selection committee put Alabama in the bracket and named Miami the first team left out.

This is just brutal timing for Cristobal after a three-loss SEC team basically took his two-loss ACC team’s spot in the playoff at the committee’s discretion.

With Miami out of the ACC title game, it’s downright impossible for the Hurricanes to contend for a national title once Sunday’s final bracket comes out. We’ll see what happens, but the SEC bias is holding for now.

Latest CFP Rankings released after Ohio State’s loss to Michigan. How far did Buckeyes fall?

Do you like where Ohio State landed? #GoBucks

Buckeye Nation is still reeling and depressed from Ohio State football and yet another loss to Michigan — its fourth-straight in the rivalry. However, as a bit of a silver lining, the most recent CFP Rankings were released on Tuesday night, and the Buckeyes only dropped from No. 2 to No. 6, well inside the cut line of what would be needed to make the College Football Playoff.

Even more, if the ranking would stand, Ohio State would be able to host a first-round game, right now with the opponent being Tennessee who is ranked No. 7.

With OSU’s loss, there was a jumbling near the top. Oregon remained No.1 followed by Texas (2), Penn State (3), Notre Dame (4), and Georgia (5) ahead of the Scarlet and Gray. Rounding out the top ten behind OSU was Tennessee (7), (8) SMU (8), Indiana (9), and Boise State (10).

Before we get ahead of ourselves, these rankings could change, and there could be some things happen to where Ohio State still drops (but not much). There are still the conference championship games to play and the most likely result that could move the Buckeyes down one spot is if SMU wins the ACC Championship Game. However, that remains to be seen. Here is how the entire CFP Top 25 appeared when unveiled on ESPN.

The last set of CFP Rankings will come out next Sunday the day after the conference title games are complete. At that point, we’ll know OSU’s College Football Playoff fate for sure.

But hey, there won’t be a conspiracy. It appears Ohio State will be in no matter what happens next weekend.

Clemson’s latest College Football Playoff ranking before huge ACC Championship matchup

Clemson drops in the latest CFP rankings.

The College Football Playoff rankings are nearing their final reveal, with the second-to-last list released ahead of conference championship weekend.

Clemson (9-3, 7-1 ACC) dropped to No. 17 in the latest rankings after a 17-14 loss to South Carolina last Saturday. The Tigers were previously ranked No. 12 but fell following the narrow defeat. Meanwhile, South Carolina climbed to No. 14 in the updated standings.

This season features the debut of the 12-team playoff format, which includes the five highest-ranked conference champions and the next seven highest-ranked teams. The top four conference champions will receive first-round byes, while teams ranked fifth through 12th will play their opening round games at the higher-seeded team’s home field. Quarterfinal and semifinal matchups will be held in the New Year’s Six bowls, with the national title game played at a neutral site.

Clemson will face No. 8 SMU this Saturday in the ACC Championship Game at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. The game kicks off at 8 p.m. on ABC. A win would guarantee the Tigers a spot in the playoff as one of the top-ranked conference champions.

Penn State ranked no. 3 in final College Football Playoff rankings of regular season

Here is where Penn State is ranked in this week’s College Football Playoff rankings and what the bracket might look like.

Penn State has moved up one more time in the College Football Playoff rankings, but there is still work to be done in order to get a first-round bye in the upcoming playoff.

Penn State jumped up to no. 3 in this week’s playoff rankings on Tuesday night as they prepare to take on no. 1 Oregon in this week’s Big Ten championship game in Indianapolis. The winner of the Big Ten championship game will get a first-round bye in the playoff and may end up being the no. 1 seed regardless of who wins.

As the top four seeds are reserved for the highest-ranked conference champions, Penn State is currently projected to host a first-round playoff game as the no. 5 seed. That would set up a home game against potential Big 12 champion Arizona State. If Penn State does lose to Oregon, it remains to be seen exactly what seed the Nittany Lions would end up getting.

The current College Football Playoff bracket would send the winner of a matchup between Penn State and Arizona State on to the quarterfinal round to face potential Mountain West Conference champion Boise State, with a semifinal matchup with Oregon (or Ohio State or Tennessee) on the horizon after that.

Below is what the College Football Playoff bracket would look like based off of these updated rankings before the conference championship game weekend, with higher seeds being given the conference championship seeding where applicable.

First-Round Byes

  1. Oregon
  2. Texas
  3. SMU
  4. Boise State

First-Round Matchups

  • 5. Penn State vs. 12. Arizona State
  • 6. Notre Dame vs. 11. Alabama
  • 7. Georgia vs. 10. Indiana
  • 8. Ohio State vs. 9. Tennessee

Penn State will battle Oregon on Saturday night in Indianapolis for the Big Ten championship game. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. on CBS. This will be the first meeting between Penn State and Oregon as Big Ten opponents and the first meeting between the two schools since the 1995 Rose Bowl. Penn State opened as a slight underdog but has a slightly favorable win probability according to ESPN’s analytics.

Texas moves up in latest College Football Playoff ranking ahead of SEC title game

Texas moves up in the newest college football playoff rankings, but the Longhorns projected seed remains unchanged.

Ohio State’s loss is Texas’ gain. The Buckeyes shocking 13-10 loss to rival Michigan at home in the Horseshoe allowed the Longhorns to move up to No. 2 in the latest College Football Playoff Rankings.

UT has been No. 3 for a couple weeks. The move up the rankings didn’t impact the Horns’ seed in the playoff bracket. Texas is still projected to be the No. 2 seed based on being in first place in the SEC.

If the Longhorns beat Georgia in the SEC Championship at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Texas is basically assured to get the No. 2 seed, a first round bye and face the winner of the first round game between the seventh and eleventh seeds.

If Texas loses its rematch with the Bulldogs, Texas will probably fall to around the 7th or 8th seed and host a first round playoff game.

Oregon is still No. 1 in the rankings and the top seed in the bracket. Penn State moves up to No. 3 in the rankings, but since the Nittany Lions are in the same conference as the Ducks they project to be the No. 5 seed. Notre Dame move up to No. 4 in the rankings and project to be the No. 6 seed in the tournament.

Georgia rounds out the Top 5. The current bracket projects a possible third Texas-Georgia game if the Bulldogs get past Indiana in the first round.

College Football Playoff bracket: Who’s in, who’s out

  • No. 5 Penn State vs No. 12 Arizona State, winner will play No. 4 Boise State
  • No. 6 Notre Dame vs No. 11 Alabama, winner will play No. 3 SMU
  • No. 7 Georgia vs No. 10 Indiana, winner will play No. 2 Texas
  • No. 8 Ohio State vs No. 9 Tennessee, winner will play No. 1 Oregon

When it came to the Alabama Crimson Tide in particular, Tuesday night’s update of the College Football Playoff (CFP) rankings was likely the most important of the season so far.

Sitting just on the outside of the 12-team field last week, Alabama picked up an Iron Bowl victory Saturday, and at the same time, saw a few teams that were ranked a few spots ahead of them both lose in Miami and Clemson.

How the College Football Playoff bracket would look if the field was set today

Here’s the CFP bracket after the committee’s fifth and final rankings before the playoff field is set.

The College Football Playoff selection committee released its fifth top-25 rankings and last one before unveiling the first 12-team playoff field. And unsurprisingly, the Oregon Ducks are still the No. 1 team, though there was plenty of movement after them.

After conference championship games this weekend, the College Football Playoff selection committee will official set the playoff field Sunday.

Conference title games could have an important impact on the rankings and seeds, so that means the CFP committee could change the playoff picture between now and then.

But for now, here’s a look at where each team would be seeded in the 12-team College Football Playoff bracket if the playoff began today.
