5 takeaways from the latest College Football Playoff Rankings

Did the latest College Football Playoff rankings open the door for the Oklahoma Sooners or Oklahoma State Cowboys? Here are 5 takeaways.

The Oklahoma Sooners win over Iowa State coupled with losses by Oregon and Michigan State gave the Sooners a bump in Tuesday’s College Football Playoff rankings. The Sooners moved from 13 to 10, lining up a Bedlam matchup of top 10 opponents heading into this weekend.

The potential exists that Bedlam and the Big 12 championship game will be between two teams in the top 10, depending on how things play out this weekend.

If the Baylor Bears beat Texas Tech as they should, they’ll remain in the top 10. If Oklahoma State wins, it will set up a top 10 matchup between the Cowboys and the Bears for the Big 12 title next Saturday. If Oklahoma beats Oklahoma State, it’ll likely keep both teams in the top 10 ahead of a rematch in the Big 12 title game.

Some fascinating stuff at work in the Big 12 this weekend and across the country, much of which could determine how the final rankings play out here in a couple of weeks. Here are 5 takeaways from the fourth round of the College Football Playoff rankings.

Everything the College Football Playoff Committee said to justify the new CFP Rankings

CFP Selection Committee Chair Gary Barta met with the media to discuss reasons and rationale for why teams are ranked where they are.

The fourth release of the College Football Playoff Rankings are out, and color me shocked. The group-think committee went against history and actually vaulted Ohio State up above Alabama to the No. 2 slot behind Georgia, and just ahead of Cincinnati. Folks in sweet tea and grits country won’t like it, but OSU’s resume is stronger than the Crimson Tide’s, and the Buckeyes are playing better. So yeah, it makes sense.

After each rankings reveal, College Football Playoff Selection Committee Chair, Gary Barta, has to come out of the cave and sit in front of the firing squad of media members to justify why the group ranked teams the manner in which we see them. It’s a thankless and impossible job (hint: he has to act like he agrees with everything) but it’s the course that’s been set for “transparency” and accountability.

Or so it seems.

Each week we like to regurgitate everything Barta says in response to questions he gets from media members so you can get an idea of what went into making the sausage there in Grapevine, Texas. It’s no different this week.

Here is everything the CFP Committee said through the voice of Gary Barta on Tuesday night.

Cincinnati joins the party in the latest College Football Playoff rankings

Cincinnati is in!

It’s your time to shine, Cincinnati. The undefeated Bearcats (11-0) jumped up one spot to No. 4 in the latest iteration of the College Football Playoff rankings. A Group of 5 team has never been selected for the playoffs, so this could be a good sign for Cincy if they can pick up a win against ECU to close out the regular season and take out a talented Houston (10-1) team in the American Conference Championship game.

Unsurprisingly, Georgia (11-0) held on to the top overall spot. Ohio State demolished then-No. 7 Michigan State (which fell to No. 12), leap-frogging Alabama and moving into the No. 2 spot. Alabama slipped back to No. 3.

Michigan, which has a looming rivalry game with the Buckeyes this weekend, is within striking distance at No. 5, and Notre Dame has kept its playoff hopes alive at No. 6.

Michigan State drops outside top 10 in updated College Football Playoff rankings

Michigan State drops in the latest College Football Playoff rankings released tonight

As expected, Michigan State’s College Football Playoff rankings stock took a hit after last week’s blowout loss to the Buckeyes.

The Spartans fell five spots to No. 12 in the updated CFP rankings that were released on Tuesday night. Michigan State was No. 7 the past few weeks, and was as high as No. 3 in these rankings this season.

The drop in the rankings was expected after Michigan State’s 56-7 loss at Ohio State this past weekend. However, the Spartans are still in a great spot to move back into the top 10 should they pick up a victory over Penn State this weekend.

The College Football Playoff committee unveiled its latest rankings for the 2021 season on Tuesday night.

Clemson (8-3, 6-2 ACC) cracked the fourth set of College Football Playoff rankings, coming in at No. 23.

It’s the first time the Tigers have been ranked by the committee this season, a stark contrast from the rest of the CFP era (since 2014) — a span in which Clemson has finished no lower than No. 17 in the final CFP rankings (2014). The Tigers were ranked in the top four of the final CFP rankings every year from 2015-20 while making six straight playoff appearances and winning two national championships.

While Clemson has garnered some respect from the CFP committee after its 48-27 victory over then-No. 10 Wake Forest last Saturday at Death Valley, the Tigers remain unranked in both the latest AP Top 25 Poll and Coaches Poll.

College Football Playoff Chase: Ranking The 8 Teams Still Alive After Week 12

Who’s left in the hunt to get into the College Football Playoff? Eight teams are still realistically alive, and we rate them based on how clear their paths are and the likelihood of getting in.

Who’s still alive in the chase to get into the 2021-2022 College Football Playoff? After Week 12, here are the 8 teams still alive and what they need to do to get in.

Big Game Reaction: Utah, OSU, OU, Bama
Bowl Bubble: Who still has a shot?

Unless everyone starts losing – like, if Georgia Tech beats Georgia, Auburn beats Alabama, and it gets even weirder from there – there are realistically eight teams left in the College Football Playoff chase.

Wake Forest tapped out, Michigan State was done 30 seconds after getting off the bus in Columbus, and Oregon ran into a Utah buzzsaw.

Those three won’t be joining us for the rest of the College Football Playoff season. Who’s left?

Here’s the ranking of the eight remaining teams based on 1) ease of path to get in, and most importantly, 2) the pecking order, starting with …

8. Oklahoma Sooners (10-1)

It keeps having to be said over and over and over again, don’t assume the College Football Rankings right now hold after the conference championships are done.

Did you win your Power Five conference championship, and did you go unbeaten or finish 12-1? The precedent has been set from the start that you’re in if you do that, and if there isn’t another obvious option.

2017 Ohio State remains the only 12-1 Power Five champ not to get in, and that’s because the committee invoked the Because It’s Alabama clause on an 11-1 team that lost to Auburn – and because Ohio State got obliterated by Purdue.

Oklahoma might not have the best resumé, but the loss to Baylor isn’t that bad. If it beats Oklahoma State twice, it’ll be one of – at most – three 12-1 Power Five conference champs.

Get to 12-1, and Oklahoma is likely in. Blowout Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Championship – and maybe in Stillwater this week – and it’s a done deal.

So why the lowest-ranked team on the list? The call is that OU doesn’t beat Oklahoma State twice, if it even gets the second chance. That, and the committee really might not like this Sooner team and the rankings aren’t just a mirage.

7. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-1)

The College Football Playoff committee has been in a strange bind when it comes to Notre Dame.

It blew out Wisconsin, and the wins over Purdue, North Carolina, and Virginia – even though the Cavaliers were without QB Brennan Armstrong – are among the eight wins over Power Five programs, and there will certainly be a ninth at Stanford this weekend.

It’s been a bit of a stunner through the early process that the committee hasn’t put the Irish one spot behind Cincinnati and kept them behind Michigan and Michigan State – at least until this week. It’s as if they’re being punished for being the one good team on Cincinnati’s schedule, and losing.

Here’s the strange part, though. Notre Dame is blowing out teams like it wishes Cincinnati had done over the last several weeks.

107-9.

That’s the three-game combined total against Navy, Virginia, and Georgia Tech, but there’s no getting into the College Football Playoff unless 1) Cincinnati loses to free the Irish to move up, and/or 2) there’s a two-loss Big 12 champion, and/or 3) the Big Ten West wins the Big Ten championship.

It’s more likely than you might think.

College Football Playoff Projections after Week 12

How will the College Football Playoff projections shake out after a fantastic week 12?

Two losses in the top seven opened the door for the Big 12 if its champion makes it through the gauntlet with just one loss. Though the Oklahoma Sooners haven’t been impressive, they and the Oklahoma State Cowboys represent an outside shot for the conference to make the playoff depending on how the next couple of weeks go.

Oregon and Michigan State losing clear the path for Cincinnati, as well as that’s one less Power Five champion they’ll have to contend with for a berth in the College Football Playoff.

After dominant performances in week 12, the Michigan Wolverines and the Ohio State Buckeyes will lock up for what could be an offensive explosion next week. The winner goes onto the Big 10 championship and has the inside track at a College Football Playoff berth. The loser is likely eliminated, but depending on the story of that game, could find itself still in the mix depending on what happened elsewhere.

Predicting the fourth release of the College Football Playoff Rankings will be

After some more cataclysmic results, we do our best to predict what the CFP Rankings will be on Tuesday evening.

And, here we go again. The fourth installment of the College Football Playoff Rankings will be announced on Tuesday night, and there will be some changes at the top once again, especially with Oregon’s loss at Utah.

We still expect the usual contenders we’ve seen this season like Georgia, Alabama, and Ohio State near the top, but how will things line up behind that. The Ducks’ loss has opened the door somewhat for teams like Cincinnati, Michigan, and Notre Dame, but there’s still a couple of weeks to go with the conference championship games still out there.

As always here on Buckeyes Wire, we don’t wait for the CFP Committee to use whatever group-think that permeates the rankings on Tuesday, but rather, we try to peer into their thinking based on what we’ve seen before to predict what the CFP Rankings will be early in the week.

Here is what we believe you’ll see (or close to it) with the fourth release of the College Football Playoff Rankings.

Predicting next round of College Football Playoff rankings

Predicting this week’s College Football Playoff rankings

Week 12 saw three top-ten teams in the College Football Playoff rankings lose: Oregon, Michigan State and Wake Forest.

All three were blown out. Oregon to Utah, Michigan State to Ohio State and Wake Forest was blown out by Clemson.

In Tuscaloosa, No. 2 Alabama survived a scare in a 42-35 win over Arkansas. Georgia took care of business against Charleston Southern of the FCS. And it looks like Cincinnati should find itself in the top-four now thanks to Oregon’s loss.

The big question this week is whether or not Ohio State will jump Alabama and overtake that No. 2 spot? The Buckeyes dominated the #7 team in the nation while Bama struggled against #21. If it were me, I’d have the Buckeyes at No. 2 (I would have had them at No. 2 the whole time), but I’m not so sure the committee will move Alabama down. Here’s how we project this week’s College Football Playoff rankings to look after Week 12.
