Where does Ohio State fall in the latest CFP rankings?

Here’s how the latest CFP rankings break down for Ohio State and others.

The latest CFP rankings have been released and Ohio State — predictably — has dropped, but just down to No. 7 after the 42-27 loss to Michigan on Saturday. The Buckeyes aren’t completely out of the picture, but there would have to be a lot of things happen for them to get back in the mix and conversation.

Ahead of OSU are Georgia (1), Michigan (2), Alabama (3), Cincinnati (4), Oklahoma State (5), and Notre Dame (6). Rounding out the top ten is Ole Miss (8), Baylor (9), and Oregon (10).

Again, this isn’t meant to give Buckeye fans hopes, but at least put on some Hawkeyes’ gear and root for Georgia to beat Alabama, Iowa to beat Michigan, Cincinnati to lose, and Baylor to beat Oklahoma State. It also wouldn’t hurt for Oregon to lose to Utah. Then, things get interesting across the board and who knows what happens.

Michigan moves into No. 2 spot as College Football Playoff rankings shake up

The fifth edition of the College Football Playoff rankings is here, and we have a little movement in the top four.

The fifth edition of the College Football Playoff Rankings went live tonight, with Georgia holding on to the top spot as expected. Ohio State’s loss to Michigan dropped them out of the playoffs and back to No. 7, opening up a spot for rival Michigan at No. 2.

Alabama, which narrowly escaped disaster against Auburn in the Iron Bowl in four overtimes, remained at No. 3, while Cincinnati held strong at No. 4.

Notre Dame, which now finds itself without a head coach as Brian Kelly was unexpectedly lured to LSU, won’t have an opportunity to improve its CFP resume as it has no conference tournament. The Irish, who sit at No. 6, now have to sit and wait for other results.

Oregon Ducks move up to No. 10 in latest College Football Playoff Rankings

The Ducks saw a small bump in the latest College Football Playoff Rankings, moving up to No. 10 in the standings.

In the last College Football Playoff rankings before things become official next week, the Oregon Ducks saw a small bump up in the polls after their win over the Oregon State Beavers.

The Ducks came in at No. 10 in the latest CFP rankings, moving ahead of the Oklahoma Sooners, who just lost to the Oklahoma State Cowboys last week.

While it is nice to see Oregon move up in the rankings, it won’t matter much for anything in the long run, since the Ducks don’t have a path into the College Football Playoff ever since their loss to the Utah Utes a couple of weeks ago. However, they will have a chance to avenge that loss on Friday in the Pac-12 Championship Game.

If the Ducks can win that game, they will earn a spot in the Rose Bowl at the end of the year.

Predicting what the fifth release of the College Football Playoff Rankings will be

We’re at it again, taking our best stab at what the fifth release of the CFP Rankings will be. How far will Ohio State fall?

Another week in college football brought us what we believe will be another shakeup in the next release of the College Football Playoff Rankings set for release on Tuesday evening. The biggest fly in the ointment obviously was Michigan’s upset of Ohio State, but there was even more to take in that should change things quite drastically.

The CFP Committee is set to unveil its fifth installment of the CFP Rankings in less than 24 hours, but we like to go ahead and try to peer into the crystal ball to see what we believe will happen.

The committee has been rather unpredictable and inconsistent with its rationale and thinking, so it’s all a big of a Lord of the Rings journey to try and figure it out, but we’re up for it.

Here are our best predictions for what the fifth and penultimate release of the College Football Playoff Rankings will look like.

Riley to USC, Napier to Florida: GAME ON

And now we’re down to six teams for four spots.

It stinks that the College Football Playoff isn’t expanded. It stinks that all the Power Five conference champions aren’t automatically in. It stinks that we still having to use words like eye-test and style points.

But that’s the deal.

Going into Championship Week, how do the six teams stack up, and which four are most likely to make it?

This isn’t based on how good the teams are. This is about who controls their destiny, what has to happen, and what the pecking order of these six teams are, starting with …

6. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (11-1)

Here’s the strange part about Notre Dame and its College Football Playoff chances.

It controls nothing, but it’s easily the first alternate if chaos kicks in.

For example. If Georgia beats Alabama in the SEC Championship – and let’s say it’s relatively convincing – and then let’s say Cincinnati loses to Houston in the American Athletic Conference championship, who’s that fourth team along with Georgia, (assume) Michigan, and (assume) Oklahoma State?

11-1 Notre Dame gets in over 12-1 Cincinnati, and it probably gets in over 11-2 Alabama.

And why?

That Cincinnati loss came way back in early October. Since then there was a decent 32-29 fight with Virginia Tech, and the Irish destroyed everything in their path the rest of the way.

Granted, beating Stanford, Georgia Tech, and Navy isn’t that big a deal – all three have three wins – and beating USC isn’t all that important this year. However, the wins over Wisconsin and Purdue matter, the win over North Carolina matters, and 11-1 will probably matter.

Again, there’s no destiny controlling here. The Irish cake is baked with no conference title game to play for – this would’ve been the year to be in the ACC – and now it needs two losses out of Cincinnati, Michigan, Oklahoma State, and Alabama to do this.

5. Cincinnati Bearcats (12-0)

Cincinnati is realistically in with a win over Houston in the American Athletic Conference Championship. However, it needs one key loss elsewhere to seal the deal.

Why isn’t this a lock at 13-0?

Start with the monster helper that Cincinnati got to play East Carolina while all the top Power Five teams in the mix were killing themselves in huge rivalry showdowns. The committee notices that.

Cincinnati needs either Alabama, Michigan, or Oklahoma State to lose, and it probably can’t get in if all three of them win.

After the weird close-call clunker win over Auburn, we’re done with the idea that the committee would put in a two-loss Alabama – if it loses to Georgia, even in a good, tough fight – over a 13-0 American Athletic Conference Cincinnati. If that happens there’s a problem.

However, at this point, assume Oklahoma State is in with a win – more on that in a moment – and Michigan is a lock with a win.

Cincinnati has to beat Houston and then catch a wee bit of a break, and here’s why …

FiveThirtyEight once again updates Ohio State and other contenders’ playoff chances after fourth CFP Rankings

It’s time to take an updated look once again at the College Football Playoff predictions and odds from our friends at FiveThirty Eight. How have things changed after the fourth CFP Rankings?

The list of contenders to make the College Football Playoff is starting to whittle down. In all reality, there are realistically just eight teams that have a shot to get into all the fun, and Ohio State is one of them.

Twice a week, we take a look at the FiveThirtyEight Playoff Predictor to see who has the best shot at making the final four teams that will play for a place in college football history. We do it after each round of games, and also after the CFP Rankings come out on the following Tuesday because that too changes the odds.

In the case of Ohio State, it has been fairly stable with a slight increase almost every time as it continues to win. But what about the other teams in the mix?

Here is how things stand after the fourth College Football Rankings were unveiled on Tuesday evening.

Oklahoma Sooners and the Big 12 Winners in latest College Football Playoff Rankings

With three teams in the top 10, including No. 10 Oklahoma, the Big 12 came up winners in the latest College Football Playoff Rankings.

Just a week ago, it seemed that the Oklahoma Sooners’ chances of getting back into the College Football Playoff hunt were slim to none. Coming off of a Baylor loss where the offense looked listless, and the defense was unable to hold on in the fourth quarter, the Sooners justified the playoff committee’s No. 8 ranking for Oklahoma in the first two weeks of the playoff rankings.

How quickly things can turn around. Losses by Oregon and Michigan State opened the door for the Sooners to get back into the top 10. As the rest of the schedule plays out over the next two weeks, the Sooners still have a chance of getting into the playoff if several things go right for them.

According to college football analyst Paul Myerburg of USA TODAY Sports (subscription required), the Oklahoma Sooners and the Big 12 conference came up winners in the most recent release of the College Football Playoff rankings.

With three teams inside the top 10 of this week’s rankings, the Big 12 has exceeded preseason expectations and has a shot at sending its champion into the semifinals. The biggest winner is No. 10 Oklahoma, which worked its way back into the selection committee’s good graces with a win against Iowa State and could rise as high as sixth with a win this weekend against No. 7 Oklahoma State. Topping the Cowboys would override Baylor’s head-to-head win this month and likely jump OU ahead of the loser between the Wolverines and Buckeyes. – Myerburg

There’s still a lot that has to playout for the Oklahoma Sooners or the Oklahoma State Cowboys to find their way into the final four. However, a glimmer of light peeking through the door provides a lot for these two teams to play for as they get set to lock up in a top 10 Bedlam matchup.
