Penn State football photo archive: Class of 2023 College Football Hall of Fame candidates

Penn State football is one of the best programs in the history of the game and with that comes some serious talent. The team already has several College Football Hall of Famers but now it has a chance to add to that large group in 2023.

This year there are three players on the ballot; [autotag]Paul Posluszny[/autotag], [autotag]Ki-Jana Carter[/autotag], and [autotag]D.J. Dozier[/autotag]. Two all-around running backs and one of the best linebackers in the history of the sport. Not a bad group!

All three men are more than deserving to be in the sport’s forever home but odds aren’t in favor of all three making it. Still, it is worth looking back at the careers these men had as they stand at the doorsteps of immortality.

Every Florida Gator to make the College Football Hall of Fame

Here is a look at who is in already in the College Football Hall of Fame ahead of Tim Tebow’s inevitable induction.

This year’s College Football Hall of Fame ballot was recently released with three former Gators on the list, including the legendary [autotag]Tim Tebow[/autotag] making his first appearance in the vote. Also mentioned this time around are defensive tackle Brad Culpepper and running back Errict Rhett, both of whom made a significant impact on the college game during their amateur playing days.

Currently, there are nine former Gators inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, with Steve Spurrier double-dipping as both a player and a coach. Among those already included in the hallowed halls are several names that are easily recognized, while others may be a bit obscure for some fans. Nonetheless, the Orange and Blue has representation among the greatest in college football history dating back nearly a full century.

Take a look below at members of the Florida Gators who have earned the highest honor in college football.

Every College Football Hall of Fame member from LSU

LSU has put 11 players and five coaches into the hall.

The National Football Foundation recently released the list of nominees for the 2023 College Football Hall of Fame induction class. One of the many players to crack the ballot — [autotag]Bradie James[/autotag] — is a former LSU linebacker.

James will look to become the 12th former Tigers player to be inducted in the hall. Currently, only 10 players have been inducted, but that will change in December when [autotag]Kevin Faulk[/autotag] joins as part of the 2022 class. LSU has also seen five coaches be selected for the Hall of Fame.

As we wait to find out if the list of LSU players in Atlanta will grow by one, here’s a rundown of every former Tigers player and coach currently in the Hall of Fame.glenn do

James will look to become the 12th LSU player inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The Tigers have put 10 players and five coaches into the College Football Hall of Fame during the program’s storied history.

That number will become 11 in December when running back Kevin Faulk is inducted as part of the 2022 class, but LSU could be set to add another in 2023. Last week, the National Football Foundation announced the list of 176 former players and 42 former coaches between the FBS and the lower levels who will be on the ballot, and one former Tigers player cracked that list.

Linebacker [autotag]Bradie James[/autotag], a Monroe native who played for the Tigers from 1999-02, received recognition. James was a First Team All-American in 2002 and received First Team All-SEC honors in 2001 and 2002. His 154 tackles in his final season still stand as the single-season program record.

He was a fourth-round pick in 2003 and played in the NFL for 10 seasons for the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans, finishing his career with 821 tackles, 16 sacks, two interceptions and 10 forced fumbles.

In total, only 1,056 players have ever been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. This year’s class will be announced at some point in 2023 with more details coming later. Earning a spot won’t be easy, as there are a number of high-profile players also eligible including Tim Tebow and Reggie Bush.

Tim Tebow, Bill Kollar among candidates for 2023 College Football Hall of Fame

Ex-Broncos QB Tim Tebow and assistant coach Bill Kollar are among the candidates for 2023 College Football Hall of Fame class.

The National Football Foundation announced 176 players and 42 coaches who will be on the ballot for the 2023 College Football Hall of Fame.

Included on the ballot are four connections to the Denver Broncos, including former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow. After winning two national titles and the Heisman Trophy with the Gators, Tebow went on to spend two seasons with the Broncos to begin his NFL career.

Broncos defensive/special projects coach Bill Kollar also made the ballot in recognition of his standout college career as a defensive end at Montana State. Kollar earned first-team All-American honors in 1973 and then won Senior Bowl MVP recognition in 1974. After college, Kollar spent eight years as a defensive lineman in the NFL before transitioning to coaching in 1984.

Former Broncos executive Matt Russell is also on the ballot. Russell was a star defender at Colorado, winning the Butkus Award, given to the nation’s best linebacker. He went on to spend three years in the NFL before a brief stint as a college coach and then a switch to scouting. He worked in Denver from 2009-2020 and now serves as a senior personnel executive with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Former Illinois linebacker Simeon Rice is also on the ballot, but his tenure with the Broncos was brief. Rice totaled 44.5 sacks with the Illini before going on to play for the Arizona Cardinals and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, winning a Super Bowl with the Bucs. He signed with Denver in 2007 but only played in six games and was cut halfway through the season.

The College Football Hall of Fame class will be announced in early 2023 followed by an induction ceremony in December next year.

3 Sooners named to 2023 College Football Hall of Fame Ballot

Former Sooners Dewey Selmon, Rocky Calmus, and Josh Heupel were named to the 2023 College Football Hall of Fame Ballot.

On Monday, the National Football Foundation announced that three former Oklahoma Sooners have been nominated for the College Football Hall of Fame.

Sooners legends [autotag]Dewey Selmon[/autotag], [autotag]Rocky Calmus[/autotag], and [autotag]Josh Heupel[/autotag] have been put on the ballot that was sent out to the 12,000 members of the NFF and College Football Hall of Fame members.

From 1972 to 1975 Dewey Selmon, along with his brothers Lucious and Lee Roy, ran roughshod over the Big 8 as part of Oklahoma’s dominating defenses under Barry Switzer. During Dewey’s tenure, the Sooners won four Big 8 titles and two national championships.

One of the key pieces to the late-90s rebirth of the Sooners was linebacker Rocky Calmus who exploded onto the scene in 1999 and helped the Oklahoma Sooners win a national championship in 2000. He was the AP Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year in 2000 and a first-team All-American. In 2001, Calmus won the Butkus Award as the nation’s best linebacker and was a finalist for the Bednarik, Nagurski, and Lombardi awards.

Josh Heupel can be credited as the godfather of Oklahoma’s modern quarterback legacy. While the Sooners had great running quarterbacks during the Bud Wilkinson and Barry Switzer eras, Heupel helped usher in a new era of Oklahoma quarterbacks with his passing ability.

In addition to leading the Sooners to their 2000 national championship, Heupel was the runner-up for the Heisman, and Oklahoma’s first consensus All-American quarterback.

The 2023 College Football Hall of Fame class will be announced in early 2023 and inducted in December of next year. Joining the 2022 class is Oklahoma legend, [autotag]Roy Williams[/autotag]. The former Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year will be inducted on December 6, 2022.

Ki-Jana Carter, Paul Posluszny on College Football Hall of Fame ballot

Former Penn State greats Ki-Jana Carter and Paul Posluszny among the candidates for the College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2023.

The ballots for the next College Football Hall of Fame class for 2023 are out, and a trio of former Penn State greats are up for consideration by the voters. Former Penn State linebacker [autotag]Paul Posluszny[/autotag] and former running backs [autotag]Ki-Jana Carter[/autotag] and [autotag]D.J. Dozier[/autotag] are each a candidate for the College Football Hall of Fame.

In addition to the three former players, current Penn State wide receivers coach [autotag]Taylor Stubblefield[/autotag] appears on the ballot for his standout career as a player for Purdue. Another former Penn State player, [autotag]Glenn Killinger[/autotag], also is on the College Football Hall of fame ballot, but he is included as a candidate for a divisional coach.

This is Carter’s first appearance on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot, and he has a chance to join former teammate [autotag]Kerry Collins[/autotag], who was inducted into the hall of fame in 2018. Carter was a first-team All-American during Penn State’s undefeated 1994 season and ended his Penn State career as one of the best backs to ever come through the program. Carter was a runner-up to 1994 Heisman Trophy winner Rashaan Salaam of Colorado and a finalist for the Maxwell Award, which was won by Collins. Carter ended his career earning co-MVP honors in the 1995 Rose Bowl victory over Oregon with 156 rushing yards, highlighted by a memorable 83-yard touchdown on Penn State’s first offensive play of the game.

Carter went on to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 1995 NFL draft of the Cincinnati Bengals. He spent a total of 10 years in the NFL.

Dozier was also a first-team All-American for Penn State in 1986. He is the only player in school history to lead the Nittany Lions in rushing for four consecutive seasons and he was a key offensive piece of Penn State’s 1986 national championship run. It was Dozier who scored the game-winning touchdown for Penn State in its upset victory over No. 1 Miami in the 1987 Fiesta Bowl.

Posluszny was a two-time First Team All-American, including as a consensus pick in 2005, and he is one of two players to win the Chuck Bednarik Award twice (Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald is the other, doing so in 1995 and 1996). Posluzny also owns a Butkus Award and was a two-time First Team All-Big Ten player. Posluszny was also a National Football Foundation scholar-athlete in 2006.

Penn State currently has 20 inductees in the College Football Hall of Fame. The most recent inductee is former linebacker [autotag]LaVar Arrington[/autotag], who will officially be enshrined later this year after being voted in last year.

Ranking All Players On The 2023 Hall of Fame Ballot

The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame announced today the names on the 2023 ballot for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, including 80 players and seven coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision.

A Hall of Famer should be obvious, and it’s not just about name recognition. A player’s popularity doesn’t mean he had all-timer of an impact on the sport or was one of the true greats. Perspective is needed, eras and systems have to be considered, and there should be some test of time.

NFL production doesn’t matter in any way, shape or form – this is the COLLEGE Football Hall of Fame – and other factors shouldn’t matter at all. Being worthy of the Hall should only be about what happened on the field during that player’s college career.

Here’s our ranking of all FBS player College Football Hall of Fame nominees based on how much they deserve to be in. A few things to keep in mind before going forward.

1. I know I’m supposed to care if a player was a NFF Scholar-Athlete, but I don’t.

2. Win a Heisman, get in the Hall. That should be automatic.

3. If you have to make a case why a player deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, he probably doesn’t deserve to be in.

Not only do voters have to take into account all the different eras and all the different aspects of the game’s evolution, but there are also the rules to deal with.

According to the National Football Foundation, to shorten and sum up the criteria:

1. A player has to have been a First Team All-American on a list recognized by the NCAA. No Joe Montana.

2. He’s eligible ten years after his final year of playing.

3. Post-career citizenship is factored into the voting, and an extra boost is given to those who earned a degree. O.J. Simpson is still in.

4. Players must have played within the last 50 years. So to be eligible for the 2023 class, the player had to have finished his career by 1973.

5. A coach is eligible three years after retiring or if he’s older than 70, and active coaches are eligible after age 75. He had to be a head coach for at least ten years and had to have coaches at least 100 games with a .600 minimum winning percentage.

These players were fantastic talents for their respective schools, and some might consider them legends, but it’s pushing it to put them in the Hall of Fame category.

LaMichael James, Haloti Ngata on 2023 College Football Hall of Fame Ballot

Both Haloti Ngata and LaMichael James have been placed on the 2023 College Football Hall of Fame ballot.

A pair of the best Oregon Duck football players of all time are starting to get some of the recognition that they deserve.

The ballot for the 2023 College Football Hall of Fame was released on Monday, and a pair of Ducks — RB LaMichael James and DL Haloti Ngata — were listed among the greats.

James and Ngata are included among 80 players and nine coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision, and 96 players and 33 coaches from the divisional ranks.

Ngata is widely considered as one of the best Ducks of all time, and was Oregon’s first consensus All-American since 1962, earning the honor after his 2005 season. He was also a two-time All-Pac-10 selection and first player in Oregon history to be named Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year (2005).

In the NFL, Ngata went on to win a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens and be named to five Pro Bowls.

James represents one of the most electric players to ever play in Eugene. As a two-time First Team All-American (unanimous in 2010) and 2010 Doak Walker Award winner, James took the college football world by storm under Chip Kelly as one of the best RBs in the nation. He finished 3rd in the 2010 Heisman voting (nation-leading 1,731 rushing yards) and helped lead the Ducks to two 12-win seasons, three league titles, and a 2011 BCS National Championship appearance.
