5. Ohio State waited all year for this, and it all worked

This wasn’t all about Ohio State getting revenge after last year’s Fiesta Bowl loss to Clemson.

But it had a lot to do with it.

This wasn’t totally about Justin Fields looking for redemption.

But, apparently, it sure did make him very, very focused and motivated.

This wasn’t about Clemson missing offensive coordinator Tony Elliott.

Yeah, it’s a big puzzle to put together, but him not being there didn’t have anything to do with the Tigers’ defensive issues.

And this wasn’t about Dabo Swinney trolling Ohio State by ranking it 11th.

But it sure didn’t hurt Ohio State’s cause.

It was a little of all of that for a supremely talented team that found the extra edge to take things to a whole other level.

We’ve seen it before with an ultra-focused 2016 Clemson team finishing the job after losing the 2015 season national title to Alabama. We saw it with Bama after coming achingly close in 2008, only to come back roaring in 2009 with a blowout win over the Florida Tebows on the way to a national championship.

Taking away what happened on the field this year – there was NOTHING to suggest that Ohio State was about to play this well – the Buckeyes’ motivation was the one X factor in a College Football Playoff that seemed totally predictable the moment it was announced.

That, and what was Ohio State going to be like when it had the full team together?

It was missing 22 players for the Big Ten Championship, it could never quite get the offensive line totally right and healthy throughout the season, and against Clemson, this was close to being a full squad.

This was the Buckeye team we’ve been waiting for.

5. It was just so … obvious

SOMEONE had to get the No. 4 seed.

The College Football Playoff is supposed to be about the four best teams, and who deserves to be in, and who would make this mini-tournament as strong as possible, and there were three obvious teams and a questionable fourth.

Texas A&M, Cincinnati, Oklahoma, and Notre Dame each had a bit of an argument, but there was no right answer. The problem is that A&M, Cincinnati, and Oklahoma finished the regular season with wins and playing well.

Notre Dame was boatraced by Clemson 34-10.

It was the first time a team had ever lost a conference championship and then got into the College Football Playoff, but it was more than that. Notre Dame looked totally outclassed against the Tigers.

But again, there wasn’t an obvious No. 4 team, and based on overall resumé the Irish were the choice to get the shot.

One quick Alabama defensive stop, seven offensive plays, and a Mac Jones to DeVonta Smith pass later all but ended it. Certainly Alabama didn’t stop trying, and it was only 14-point lead at halftime, but it sure seemed like there was no real worry about any drama.

So now Notre Dame will get dogged for not being able to hang in yet another massive game with national championship implications, but that’s not fair.

The Irish earned their shot to be in this – at least as much as any other option. It just ran into a powerhouse. However …

Will Michigan State accept bowl bid on Sunday? Reports indicate that’s unlikely

This will be something to monitor throughout Sunday, but it seems pretty clear that the Spartans’ season is officially over.

[jwplayer atYSSGHO]

Opting out of bowl games has been something high-profile players have done often in recent years, and in 2020 it appears to be the trend for teams as well — potentially including Michigan State.

Bowl bids will be handed out on Sunday, and there’s a chance MSU will receive an offer to play in a postseason bowl game. However, Graham Couch of the Lansing State Journal is reporting the Spartans will turn down a bowl offer should they receive one.

MSU has yet to formally announce their postseason intentions, but many have speculated the Spartans are done for the season after this weekend’s game vs. Maryland was canceled on Thursday. A number of players have announced they’re leaving the program (either to go to the NFL or transfer) since that game was canceled, and while that doesn’t completely tell us the season is over, that does serve as a hint.

Earlier in the week, head coach Mel Tucker seemed adamant about wanting to play in a bowl game should that opportunity arise so it’s interesting to see the somewhat sudden decision to change course. However, it sounds like the players wanted to turn down that opportunity to move onto the offseason.

A number of Big Ten teams have opted out of the postseason, including Penn State who is referenced in Couch’s tweet above. So should MSU elect to play, then there would some bowl options for where the Spartans could land.

This will be something to monitor throughout Sunday, but it seems pretty clear that the Spartans’ season is officially over.

Of course, everything is up in the air when it comes to college football, any bowl schedules and games, and far more important things overall. For now, hoping all is okay and the season goes off as planned, these are the expected conference bowl tie-ins and affiliations for the 2020-2021 bowl season.

The Power Five conferences are close to set, but the Group of Five conferences are still going to need time to lock in exactly what their official tie-ins will be. Please note that there likely will be several changes over the next several months.

– The top four teams ranked by the College Football Playoff selection committee will be slotted in the semifinals: Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl, both on Friday, January 1st, 2021.

College Football Bowl Betting: Best Parlay Options

Previewing the college football bowl season betting odds and lines, with a look at the best three-team parlay for the holidays.

One of the best parts about bowl season in college football is all of the different betting options available. Below, we are looking at the best three-team parlay you can make for the next two weeks of bowl games.

College Football Bowl Parlay Bets: Memphis vs. Penn State Moneyline

Photo Credit: Justin Ford – USA TODAY Sports

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Friday, Dec. 12 at 6:15 p.m. ET.

What: Cotton Bowl
When: Saturday, Dec. 28 at noon ET

For the first part of our bet, we are looking for an underdog to win or cover the spread to boost the total odds for our three-leg parlay. That is why I’m eying the Memphis Tigers (12-1) over the Penn State Nittany Lions (10-2) in the Cotton Bowl. Memphis is a 7.5-point underdog despite winning 12 games this season. Memphis has one of the best offenses in college football, averaging 40.5 points per game (PPG) this season to rank eighth in the nation. Memphis will certainly be challenged by a Penn State defense, which allowed just 14.1 PPG to rank seventh overall.

However, I like MEMPHIS (+200) on the moneyline – to win outright as it has proven to be one of the best teams in the country. If the moneyline makes you nervous, consider swapping out this pick with Memphis to cover the 7.5 point spread at -134 instead.

College Football Bowl Parlay Bets: LSU vs. Oklahoma Over/Under

Photo Credit: Matthew Emmons – USA TODAY Sports

What: Peach Bowl
When: Saturday, Dec. 28 at 4 p.m. ET

The Over/Under for LSU-Oklahoma is set at a monstrous 76 points. While both offenses can score 40 or more with ease, these playoff games tend to start off slow, given the amount of time off for the two teams. Don’t be shocked if both use the first quarter or so to “feel” each other out before picking up the tempo on offense.

It’s also worth noting that the Under hit in four of the last five games involving the Sooners. They have proven they are at least somewhat capable of defense this season. Oklahoma should be able to get at least a few stops early in this contest.

While it’s fair to expect a ton of points, bet the UNDER 76 (-110) to hit in the Peach Bowl.

College Football Bowl Parlay Bet: Michigan vs. Alabama Point Spread

Photo Credit: John David Mercer – USA TODAY Sports

What: Citrus Bowl
When: Wednesday, Jan. 1 at 1 p.m. ET

One of the biggest non-playoff bowl games will happen on New Year’s Day as Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan Wolverines (9-3) will take on Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide (10-2). While Alabama will be without their star quarterback in Tua Tagovailoa, it is still one of the best teams in college football, especially on offense.

That is why ALABAMA (-6.5, -118) is nearly a touchdown favorite here. In the Iron Bowl, Alabama was still able to put up 45 points against the Auburn Tigers without Tagovailoa on the field. The Tide should have no problem covering the spread against a Wolverines team that allowed 56 points to the Ohio State Buckeyes. Expect Alabama to win and cover in this Big Ten-SEC contest.

Altogether, this three-team parlay – with the Memphis ML – will payout at +958 odds. A $10 bet would return a profit of $95.80 if all three hit. It’s a decent-sized payout given the relatively safe bets.

Note: Swapping the Memphis spread in place of the ML lowers the payout to +516.

Music City Bowl: Louisville vs. Mississippi State odds, picks and best bets

Previewing the Music City Bowl between Louisville and Mississippi State with NCAA football betting odds, picks and best bets

The Louisville Cardinals (7-5) and Mississippi State Bulldogs (6-6) will square off in the Music City Bowl at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn., on Dec. 30 at 4 p.m. ET.

We analyze the Louisville-Mississippi State odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Louisville at Mississippi State: Three things you need to know

1. Mississippi State ranks 18th in the nation in rushing this season, averaging 227 yards per game. That doesn’t bode well for Louisville, which allowed 517 rushing yards to Kentucky in its most recent game. The Cardinals’ rush defense is 115th in the country (210.8).

2. Louisville’s five losses are all by at least 11 points with an average margin of defeat of 24.2 points. Five of the Bulldogs’ six losses came by at least 10 points, including four by at least 19.

3. Louisville’s first-year head coach Scott Satterfield is 3-0 in his career in bowl games, previously coaching Appalachian State. Mississippi State coach Joe Moorhead lost in his bowl debut as head coach last season, 27-22 to Iowa in the Outback Bowl.

Louisville at Mississippi State: Odds, betting lines and picks

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Friday at 3 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Mississippi State 31, Louisville 21

Moneyline (ML)

The Bulldogs won each of their last two games to close out the regular season after losing 38-7 to Alabama. They are 6-1 in their last seven December games, proving to be a tough out late in the year.

Bet the MISSISSIPPI STATE (-167) moneyline, which is a good number to get in at.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on Mississippi State returns a profit of $5.99.

Against the Spread (ATS)

Mississippi State is 10-4 ATS in its last 14 nonconference games. Louisville, on the other hand, is only 1-6 ATS in its last seven games against the SEC.

Bet MISSISSIPPI STATE (-110) to cover the 3.5-point spread in this one.

Over/Under (O/U)

The over/under is 62.5, which is pretty a high number for these teams. The under has hit in five of the Bulldogs’ last seven games and in each of the last three, though the over is 4-1 in Louisville’s last five.

Still, you should bet the UNDER (-110), given how bad both passing attacks are.

Bet 1: Air Force (-2.5, -115) vs. Washington State

Photo Credit: Isaiah J. Downing – USA TODAY Sports

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Friday, Dec. 20 at 12 p.m. ET.

When: Friday, Dec. 27 at 10:15 p.m. ET

One of the most intriguing matchups during the bowl season will feature one of the nation’s best rushing attacks in Air Force against the best passing offense in football in Washington State. Air Force won 10 games this season, and finished the year with seven straight wins. Look for the Falcons to have a ton of success on the ground against a suspect Cougars defense.

Bet 2: Ohio State (+105) vs. Clemson

Photo Credit: Brian Spurlock – USA TODAY Sports

When: Saturday, Dec. 28 at 8 p.m. ET

Our second bet features the No. 2 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes against the defending champion Clemson Tigers. Ohio State is one of the most balanced teams in the country with stars on both sides of the ball. While both teams are pretty equal, there is more value on the Ohio State moneyline. It’s a strong play at plus-money.

Bet 3: Auburn (-278) vs. Minnesota

Photo Credit: John David Mercer – USA TODAY Sports

When: Wednesday, Jan. 1 at 1 p.m. ET

Auburn has proven to be one of the best teams in the country, defeating Alabama and Oregon during the 2019 season. Three combined losses to LSU, Florida and Georgia by 21 points have knocked the Tigers down to No. 12 in the College Football rankings. They are touchdown favorites over Minnesota and expect them to win fairly easily over the Golden Gophers.

Bet 4: Oregon (+115) vs. Wisconsin

Photo Credit: Kirby Lee – USA TODAY Sports

When: Wednesday, Jan. 1 at 5 p.m. ET

The Rose Bowl will feature one of the best matchups this bowl season as the No. 6 ranked Oregon Ducks will face the No. 8 Wisconsin Badgers. While Wisconsin is favored, Oregon appears to be the better team on paper with a top-ranked defense and a potential top-10 pick at quarterback. Considering the value here, grab the Oregon moneyline for the outright win over Wisconsin.

Bet 5: Georgia (-7.5, +115) vs. Baylor

Photo Credit: Brett Davis – USA TODAY Sports

When: Wednesday, Jan. 1 at 8:45 p.m. ET

Baylor has been one of the biggest surprises of the college football season, but it will be facing a significantly more talented Georgia team in the Sugar Bowl. Georgia has covered the spread in four of its last six games and expect the ‘Dogs to do the same in this contest. They just have too much team speed, and that could overwhelm Baylor.

Total Parlay Payout: +2310

Overall, this is a pretty easy bet to back considering there are no major upsets needed in order for it to hit. At better than 23-1 odds, this is a bet that will have you on the edge of your seat throughout bowl season.
