2021 Music City Bowl 5 Thoughts

3. Aidan O’Connell’s big day
2. THAT’S the Tennessee offense
1. Purdue had its big moment

5: Your 2021 Music City Bowl was awesome

Seriously, what more could you possibly want out of a bowl game?

Purdue’s 627 yards of total offense were terrific. Tennessee’s 666 were stronger.

There were big plays, wild momentum swings, lots and lots of interesting coaching moments, clutch plays on both sides, and one very, very questionable call in overtime that probably won’t make the – let’s just say – occasionally surly Tennessee fans mad.

No, it wasn’t a playoff game. It wasn’t for anything more than fun and the joy of the game, but this is exactly what a bowl game should be.

If you weren’t entertained by this from start to finish, college football can’t help you.

Now, about that play …

4. The Texas Tech D got the job done
3. Where was the Mississippi State defense?
2. How about giving a little love to Texas Tech?
1. Mike Leach could use a good Year 3

5. Texas Tech was … physical?

No, this wasn’t the Mississippi State of the regular season, and it certainly wasn’t the Mississippi State that everyone was hoping to see in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl – a ton more on that in a moment – but Texas Tech did its part by taking advantage of the situation.

It’s Texas Tech under Sonny Cumbie – he’s off to Louisiana Tech as the head man after this. It’s supposed to bomb away, throw deep, and do what Mississippi State is supposed to do under Mike Leach.

Instead, the ground game took over.

Texas Tech was able to throw well enough to get by, but it was the running game that took over with 260 yards to go along with the 252 through the air.
Mississippi State was tenth in the nation against the run, allowing 101 yards per game on the year.

Tajh Brooks took off for 107 yards and a score, SaRodrorick Thompson added 80 yards and a score, and the team averaged close to six yards per carry.

Mississippi State netted 54 rushing yards and averages few than three yards per run.

3. Clayton Tune made the throw
2. Houston’s defense stepped up
1. Auburn closed with a thud

5. The SEC is 0-3 …

It might not be by the time you read this – Mississippi State should handle Texas Tech in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl – but this is an awful look so far this bowl season for the conference that’s supposed to be the most dominant in college football.

There’s no excuse.

The SEC gets the best talent, has the top facilities, and it’s bound by absolutely nothing when it comes to resources and attention. That “It Just Means More” tag line is actually true, but Missouri couldn’t come up with one big late stop against Army.

Florida got trucked by UCF, and yeah, the SEC side cared.

In Birmingham, Auburn couldn’t get anything moving, couldn’t take advantage of its opportunities, and couldn’t come up with that one big stop late to get out with a bowl win.

And now the SEC is 0-3 with Texas A&M having to tap out of its bowl. In the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter – Auburn could come back next year and go 12-1 – but you don’t lose three games to Group of Five programs if you’re the supposed be-all-end-all of super-conferences.

At the same time, give all due credit to the American Athletic Conference for going 2-0 so far against the SEC, especially because that was …

Armed Forces Bowl: 5 Things That Matter

Final Score: Army 24, Missouri 22
CFN Prediction: Missouri 27, Army 21
Line: Army -9, o/u: 54

5. The running backs came through

Missouri had the two big storylines with starting quarterback Connor Bazelak benched, and with star running back Tyler Badie opting out. As it turned out, neither thing might have mattered all that much.

More on Part One in a moment. As far as Part Two the replacements did their jobs.

Elijah Young was quick, ripping off a game-high 75 yards. Dawson Downing ran for 69 yards. QB Brady Cook was dangerous with 53 yards. Badie would’ve made more of a difference, but the Tigers averaged well over five yards per carry.

On the other side, this was the Jakobi Buchanan show.

He only ran for 68 yards and a score on 21 carries, but he was the battering ram who kept converting on fourth downs and pushed through the Mizzou defensive front all game long.

He didn’t fumble. Army didn’t turn the ball over. However, Downing …

Prediction: San Diego State 26, UTSA 23
Line: San Diego State -2.5, o/u: 48.5
Final Score: San Diego State 38, UTSA 24

5. UTSA wasn’t the normal UTSA

San Diego State knows what it’s like to be short-handed at the last second after losing over 25 players for the Mountain West Championship against Utah State, and UTSA had to deal with some missing parts in the Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl – but for another reason.

Star safety Rashad Wisdom was out for the first half after a targeting call against WKU, corner Tariq Woolen was out, and second-leading tackler Trevor Hermanson didn’t play. The big loss was 1,479-yard, 15-touchdown all-star RB Sincere McCormick, who opted out a few days before the game.

The Roadrunners still fought the good fight and made this interesting, and the Aztecs were able to rise up and take over in the second half, but this might have been a far, far different game with all of the parts.

Texas A&M wins the Capital One Orange Bowl

Final Score: Texas A&M 41, North Carolina 27
CFN Prediction: Texas A&M 34, North Carolina 20
Line: Texas A&M -10, o/u: 65.5

5. It’ll go down in history as a misleading Orange Bowl – and ACC bowl season

It was a much, much closer game than the 41-27 final score, but stats are stats.

Including the College Football Playoff games, the Orange Bowl continues to be a bit of a dog – at least in the final score.

This game makes it ten of the last 13 decided by double-digits, and going way back, it’s been 18 of the last 25.

It’ll also go down as a misleading bowl season for the ACC.

Yeah, it was 0-6 – you are what your record is – but two of the losses came in the College Football Playoff, Wake Forest was an underdog to Wisconsin, NC State was a slight dog to Kentucky, Miami was an underdog to Oklahoma State – and lost QB D’Eriq King to a knee injury just as the team got rolling – and there was this loss.

North Carolina played a whole lot better than 41-27.

The ACC was the dog in five of the six games, but after a wildly fun year getting two teams into the playoff, it was a rough finish.

NEXT: North Carolina gave it a phenomenal run

Final Score: Iowa State 34, Oregon 17
CFN Prediction: Oregon 26, Iowa State 24
Line: Indiana -7.5, o/u: 67.5

5. The Big 12 delivered in a big, big way

5-0 is 5-0.

You play the team in front of you, it’s not your fault if the other team has issues, and all of those other talking points. It’s all about the scoreboard and the record.

Yes, the Big 12 was favored in all five of the games. Yes, Army was one of those games, a meh Colorado was another, D’Eriq King suffered a knee injury in one, and Florida was missing way too many players in another.

A win is a win is a win, but it’s possible to slightly yuck the Big 12’s yum on a lot of this.

Not on Iowa State’s win in the Fiesta Bowl. It just beat the Pac-12 Champion.

This was a huge win for the Cyclones – more on this later, but it might be the biggest win ever – and it was the one the Big 12 should chirp about more than any of the others.

Oklahoma might have been jaw-dropping great, and Oklahoma State, West Virginia and Texas did what they were supposed to do, but Iowa State was dealing with a very talented, very active Oregon team that looked like it was about to put it all together.

The Ducks still have tremendous talent, and the sky’s the limit going into next year, but …

Ole Miss wins the Outback Bowl

Final Score: Ole Miss 26, Indiana 20
CFN Prediction: Indiana 40, Ole Miss 34
Line: Indiana -7.5, o/u: 67.5

5. The Outback Bowl once again delivered

It’s been Big Ten vs. SEC since it made the change from the Hall of Fame to the Outback in 1996, and it keeps on coming through with good fun games.

Minnesota was able to come through against Auburn for a 31-24 in last year’s thriller on New Year’s Day.

Iowa got by Mississippi State 27-21 in the 2019 New Year’s Day version, South Carolina and Jadeveon Clowney blasted through Michigan 26-19 before that, and there were three overtime games in the 2010s.

The Outback Bowl has now given us four straight good, tough SEC vs. Big Ten battles decided by seven points or fewer, and nine of the last 12 have been close.

This game always has that big conference teams that were just good enough to matter, but not so amazing that they’re disappointed to be playing in it. This one came through, too, only more so considering bowl games are still a huge deal for the Indiana program, and Ole Miss is just getting going under Lane Kiffin.

NEXT: What is this “defense” thing Ole Miss was doing?

Kentucky wins the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl

Final Score: Kentucky 23, NC State 21
CFN Prediction: NC State 27, Kentucky 23
Line: Kentucky -3, o/u:50.5

5. This TaxSlayer Gator Bowl has become a solidly under-appreciated bowl

It always seemed to get lost on New Year’s Day, and it’s always been a bit of a land of misfit teams, but the last two Gator Bowls have been decided by a grand total of three points.

Now, the games aren’t always pretty – more on that in a moment – but they’ve finished strong, including last year’s wild Tennessee finish over Indiana.

NC State got ripped up by Texas A&M in the 2018 version, but that’s three of the last four and six of the last nine decided by a touchdown or less. Now the ACC has to start winning these.

It’s been a disastrous bowl season in every way for the ACC with Miami’s D’Eriq King suffering a torn ACL, Clemson and Notre Dame getting trucked, and Wake Forest getting picked off again and again by Wisconsin.

This was one the conference could’ve had, but with the NC State loss, that makes it three loss in the last three appearances since Georgia Tech beat Kentucky in 2016.

NEXT: That was a war of attrition for the NC State lines
