Winning is everything.

Well, almost everything.

Putting fans in the stands is a more important measure of how successful a college program is, and not just as a show of support. Other college sports might be able to generate revenue, but football almost always carries the weight of an entire athletic department. Get the customers to show up, and everything flows from there.

2020 painfully showed just how true that all really is.

We didn’t do this after that season – there wasn’t enough attendance to rank – and we’re in a whole new world now.

Realignment plays a big role, media rights are everything, and there are new revenue streams for the players and coaches along with the programs. But attendance still matters for the schools, the surrounding businesses, and for the entire buzz of a college atmosphere.

So remember, some of the numbers are a bit off-kilter because some schools didn’t have fans in the stands in 2020. This reflects that.

Below are the rankings from 1 to 133, welcoming in Jacksonville State and Sam Houston to the FBS party, and including James Madison who made its debut last year.

Attendance is based on the average per game over the last five years, followed up by % capacity, followed by the average home attendance for every school last season.

Top 25 college football teams in home attendance for 2022 season

Which teams led the way in attendance this season?

While the Badgers didn’t have the best year on the field, Wisconsin fans still vaulted Wisconsin into the top 20 of home attendance this season.

A number of Big Ten programs were near the top of the top according to D1.ticker, a website that has every team’s attendance numbers in 2022.

According to average attendance per the website’s data, it was a trio of Big Ten teams in the top three spots. Where did the Badgers fall within the top 25 in terms of average home attendance last season?

Here is a complete look at which college football programs landed in the top 25:

Notre Dame Football: Brian Kelly speaks on attendance policy

Very few will be able to see Notre Dame play in person this year. Brian Kelly commented on that on Monday afternoon.

In case you missed it earlier, Notre Dame released their plans for fans in attendance for the 2020 season as it will be limited to Notre Dame students, faculty and parents of players on both Notre Dame and each of their opponents.

Additionally, Notre Dame joins the several programs that won’t allow fans to tailgate this fall.

Notre Dame head football coach Brian Kelly released the following statement Monday afternoon as he looks for the positive in a tough situation.

It may be as far from ideal as you can find but hey, at least we’re 12 days out and are still anticipating getting football in 2020.

Even if it’s in front of less than 16.000 people at Notre Dame Stadium.

Beyond wins and losses, attendance might be the most important factor in a program’s success. Put butts in the seats, support the non-revenue sports. When the stands have empty sections, athletic directors get fired – especially at the power program schools.

Below are the rankings of all 130 college football programs based on their five-year attendance averages, including how full the stadiums are.

Basically, for the teams at the top of the list, there are no excuses when it comes to revenue and infrastructure. Attendance – and the revenue that comes from it – is why these schools usually have the major football programs.

With the 2020 college football season a question mark in so many ways, this is a massive factor for athletic directors to deal with. Not finishing up the spring and winter sports hurt, but don’t have fans in the football stands – or if games get cancelled or postponed – and there’s a huge problem.
