Ideas for Kyle Shanahan to help solve QB issue

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is up for anything at quarterback, so we adjusted their depth chart.

The 49ers have a problem at quarterback. Nick Mullens, the backup-turned-starter following an injury to Jimmy Garoppolo, turned the ball over twice in a Week 14 loss to Washington. Those two turnovers went for defensive touchdowns in an eight-point defeat that effectively ended San Francisco’s season.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday after the contest said he was “up for anything” at quarterback.

He really meant one of the two quarterbacks on the active roster, but “up for anything” indicates he’s open to some new ideas, so we put together a list of some outside-the-box options under center for San Francisco to finish the year.

Colin Kaepernick shows that he remains ready for an NFL chance in new workout video

Still waiting.

Despite some perceived momentum last summer for Colin Kaepernick’s return to the NFL amid the global response to the Black Lives Matter movement, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback remains without a job in the league.

In fact, that aforementioned momentum wasn’t all that genuine as no team even brought Kaepernick in for a workout.

But as Kaepernick showed in a new workout video, he has continued to train five days a week in case an NFL team ever decides to call.

Kaepernick posted a video on Monday showing him going through a workout with fellow NFL free agent Eric Reid — who remains unsigned since being released by the Panthers.

In the caption, Kaepernick wrote that it had been 1,363 days of the NFL denying him an opportunity in the league. He added hashtags of #StillReady and #StopRunning.

Both Kaepernick and Reid kneeled during the national anthem in protest of police brutality and racial injustice while members of the 49ers. Reid continued that protest in two seasons with Carolina. Kaepernick was blackballed and reached an undisclosed settlement with the league.

Following Sunday’s season-ending injury to Bengals No. 1 pick Joe Burrow, calls for Cincinnati to bring in Kaepernick were trending on Twitter. The Bengals have just Ryan Finley and practice squad quarterback Brandon Allen on roster.

But just as we’ve seen countless times over the years, teams have shied away from even giving Kaepernick a workout in favor of objectively worse quarterbacks.

Colin Kaepernick calls for release of convicted killer of Philadelphia policeman

Colin Kaepernick is calling for the release of Mumia Abu-Jamal, the convicted killer of a Philadelphia policeman in the ’80s

Colin Kaepernick is a man of causes and activism. The exiled NFL quarterback’s most recent stand is sure to stir controversy.

In a video, Kaepernick is calling for the release from prison of Mumia Abu-Jamal, who was convicted of murder and sentenced to death in 1982 for the 1981 murder of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner.

He contends Abu-Jamal, 66, was “framed” in the killing of Faulkner by a racist police department.

In the video, Kaepernick cites what he believes are numerous instances of intolerable actions by the Philadelphia police department and the judge in the case.

Abu-Jamal’s case has been a cause celebre for decades, His case has been polarizing as he was sentenced to death and eventually had it changed to life in prison.

Kaepernick cites that Abu-Jamal has been incarcerated for 38 years, 30 spent in solitary.

Abu-Jamal is currently appealing for a new trial based on claims that Supreme Court justice Robert Castille had a conflict of interest (when Castille was Philadelphia’s district attorney, his office fought to keep the activist and prolific writer behind bars), and six newly discovered boxes of documents related to the case, which the original prosecutor never turned over as evidence.

Abu-Jamal’s case is currently before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, which in February agreed to take up a petition filed last year by Maureen Faulkner to determine whether Krasner’s office has a conflict in its continued handling of appeals by Abu-Jamal. She is asking for the court to direct the state Attorney General’s Office to handle the appeals instead.

Per Inquirer.com:

Faulkner’s widow, Maureen, who has since remarried, and her husband, Paul Palkovic, said Monday that they would be willing to talk to Kaepernick about the facts in the case. “I’ll be more than happy to talk to Mr. Kaepernick to ease his concerns,” she said.

“It’s the same thing they’ve been doing for 40 years,” Palkovic said of the allegations of misconduct by Abu-Jamal supporters. “Lies, rehashing the same stuff.”

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court in February agreed to take up a petition filed last year by Faulkner to determine whether Philadelphia DA Larry Krasner’s office has a conflict in its continued handling of appeals by Abu-Jamal. She is asking for the court to direct the state Attorney General’s Office to handle the appeals instead.

Colin Kaepernick earns Hall of Fame honor

Colin Kaepernick will be inducted into the University of Nevada Athletics Hall of Fame.

Colin Kaepernick is going into a Hall of Fame … and it isn’t Canton. Sorry.

The former San Francisco 49ers QB and current social activist will be honored by the University of Nevada Athletics Hall of Fame. it was announced Friday.

The school relayed his accomplishments, on and off the field:

Kaepernick finished his career as the only player in college football history to pass for 10,000 yards and rush for 4,000 yards after earning the starting job as a sophomore. He was also the only player to pass for rush for 1,000 yards and throw for 2,000 yards in the three consecutive years…

He finished his career with 10,098 passing yards, 82 passing touchdowns, 24 interceptions, 4,112 rushing yards and 59 rushing touchdowns and led the Wolf Pack to one of the greatest seasons in school history in 2010 with a 13-1 record, a WAC conference championship, a win in the Kraft Fight Hunger bowl and final rankings in the national top 15.

Kaepernick was selected in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. He played for six seasons for the 49ers, leading the team to the Super Bowl in 2012 after taking over for the injured Alex Smith and the NFC Championship game the following year.

He started sitting and then kneeling for the national anthem during the 2016 preseason as a protest against racial injustice, police brutality, and systematic oppression in the country. He became a free agent following the 2016 season and has not been signed since in what appears to many observers to be a reaction to his civil rights activism

He founded the “Know Your Rights Camp”, an organization which held free seminars to disadvantaged youths to teach them about self-empowerment, American history and legal rights and has been widely recognized for his social activism, winning prestigious awards including 2017 GQ Magazine Citizen of the Year, the 2017 Sports Illustrated Muhammad Ali Legacy Award, the 2017 American Civil Liberties Union Eason Monroe Courageous Advocate Award and the 2018 Harvard University W. E. B. Du Bois Medal.

What are the longest runs by a QB in the last 25 years?

Daniel Jones will be remembered for what happened at the end of his 80-yard run, not for it.

Following the loss of QB Dak Prescott, where do the Dallas Cowboys go? The quick answer is Andy Dalton, and now (post recording/filming) we know they’ve added Garrett Gilbert to the mix along with Ben DiNucci. The best QB for the job of backing up Dalton is still on the street, though.

Meanwhile, the rest of the offensive skill positions is humming along. Will it continue with the change under center? K.D. and Patrik go through the impact of Prescott’s injury, what it means for the player and the team, and also talk about climbing out of another double-digit hole to take down the rival New York Giants. History suggests Broncos are unlikely to sign Colin Kaepernick

Don’t expect the Broncos to sign Colin Kaepernick after losing Drew Lock to a shoulder injury.

After losing starter Drew Lock (shoulder) for the next 2-6 weeks, the Denver Broncos will likely add another quarterback to the roster.

Colin Kaepernick is the most notable name among the free agent quarterbacks available but, so far, he hasn’t come up in the team’s discussions about potential options.

“His name hasn’t come up in the brief discussions I’ve had with John [Elway] at this point,” Broncos coach Vic Fangio said during his Zoom media availability on Monday. “I’m sure John and Matt [Russell] will work hard to bring somebody in here that they think will be the best fit.”

After winning Super Bowl 50, Deven tried to trade for Kaepernick in 2016 when he was playing for the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers wouldn’t agree to pay part of Kaepernick’s salary in exchange for a draft pick and Kaepernick didn’t want to accept a pay cut in order to make the trade go through.

After the trade failed to materialize, Kaepernick stayed put in San Francisco and earned his full salary before leaving the 49ers in 2017.

Two years after failing to complete a trade for Kaepernick, Elway shot down the possibility of signing the quarterback in 2018.

“Colin had his chance to be here,” Elway said during a training camp press conference two years ago. “We offered him a contract. He didn’t take it.”

Kaepernick knelt during the playing of the national anthem during the 2016 season in protest of racism and police brutality. He hasn’t been on any NFL rosters since becoming a free agent thee years ago.

Given Elway’s 2018 remark that Kaepernick “had his chance” to join the team in the past, it seems unlikely that Denver will consider bringing in the 32-year-old quarterback now.

The Broncos will start Jeff Driskel while Lock is sidelined and this week, Brett Rypien is expected to serve as the backup. Any quarterback Denver brings in would have to pass multiple COVID-19 tests so it’s unlikely any new quarterback would be ready to dress in time for Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

We’ve put together lists of free agent quarterbacks and practice squad quarterbacks Denver might consider adding with Lock sidelined.

Nike released a new Colin Kaepernick jersey and it sold out in seconds on Nike’s SNKRS app

More SNKRS madness.

After months of waiting, Nike finally released some new Colin Kaepernick gear to the public on Thursday. It was released in celebration of the fourth anniversary of the first time he knelt during the national anthem.

They unveiled a new Colin Kaepernick monochromatic “True to 7” football jersey on Wednesday afternoon and dropped a notification that it’d be released on Thursday.

The jersey was available on the SNKRS app, of course, like every other piece of exclusive gear Nike has. It came in a triple-black colorway with both the lettering of his name and his number in black. The previous version had white lettering.

It’s a pretty slick look, to be honest. And it means a lot to Kap, clearly.

But, yet again in true SNKRS, it sold out in just seconds. Disappointment was in abundance across the internet.

There were some W’s, but they came few and far between.

Shouts to everyone who managed to cop. Better luck next time to those who didn’t. They’ll need it.

Eric Reid calls out Roger Goodell on Colin Kaepernick hypocrisy: ‘It’s diabolical’

Former Panthers safety Eric Reid called out Commissioner Roger Goodell on Twitter today.

The NFL is great at pretending to care about problems without actually doing anything meaningful to address them. That’s what they did for years when it came to concussions and CTE and it’s what they’re doing now on the subject of the social justice issues that are so important to the communities of over two thirds of its players.

Despite all the feel-good-come-together videos and end racism slogans in the end zones, some critics are not impressed by what they perceive as a hypocritcal public relations campaign. Former Panthers safety Eric Reid called out Commissioner Roger Goodell on Twitter today, calling the NFL’s actions half-hearted at best. Reid continued with a second message, calling Goodell’s using video of Colin Kaepernick kneeling while continuing to rob him of his career “diabolical.”

Reid was released by Carolina in March despite a negative cap effect. He remains a free agent along with Kaepernick.
