Colin Cowherd believes C.J. Stroud has most likely chance to fail of the three first round QB draft picks

Interesting take here by Colin Cowherd to say the least. #GoBucks

Colin Cowherd believes CJ Stroud, the former Ohio State and current Houston Texans quarterback, is the most likely to fail among the three first-round NFL draft picks under center.

And there is more to it than the Buckeyes’ inability to produce quarterbacks at the game’s highest level.

It’s a tired narrative: Ohio State doesn’t produce NFL quarterbacks. There’s some truth to it, of course. But there aren’t too many programs that have more than one or two great signal callers that start for a long period of time on Sundays.

Cowherd has some pretty stale takes on why OSU hasn’t produced a star quarterback in the league (though Justin Fields may be loading), and he believes Stroud will not be able to overcome all of the built-in disadvantages of playing in Houston.

It has a little to do with the situation and a little to do with quarterbacks not being prepared for the next level at Ohio State because of too much talent surrounding them says Cowherd. Weird, seeing how that’s the case for any big-time program that has had a talented starter at the NFL level.

Bottom line: Cowherd doesn’t think Stroud’s talent can overcome everything working against him within the Texans franchise.

“CJ Stroud is just not talented enough to overcome the Houston Texans’ nonsense,” said Cowherd. “But if you told me today, on August 8, Tuesday — Tuesday, August 8, that I had to pick one (rookie first-round QB) that would miss, I would probably pick CJ Stroud from all the things I’ve heard in camp.”

You can listen to the segment below and pick it apart for yourself.

Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion and nobody likes to give it more than Cowherd. He might be right; who knows? But I’ll tell you this: From what we know of Stroud, I wouldn’t bet on him not being a flop of an NFL quarterback.

Yes, there are things beyond his control that have everything to do with the situation he is put in, but he’s been proving people wrong all of his life, and I like his chances in the National Football League as well.

Show ’em CJ

Colin Cowherd insensitively named the late Dwayne Haskins a QB who can’t win Super Bowl in 2023

This was so classless and offensive.

Just as Colin Cowherd whiffed on the fact that MLB teams can’t trade draft picks, the host completely struck out — and this time, it was worse.

During a recent episode of Cowherd’s radio show on FOX Sports 1, the host rattled off a segment about current NFL quarterbacks who can’t win Super Bowl 58 this February. At face value, it’s pretty standard fare for August, trying to fill the gaps between the dog days of summer and the NFL season.

There was just one major problem: Cowherd listed the late Dwayne Haskins, who died in April 2022 after a car tragically hit him. Even worse, at no point did Cowherd correct this error. He did, however, correct the list’s “can win a Super Bowl” typo. Because that’s apparently what was most important.

Otherwise, it was business as usual.

The Haskins error is by far the most egregious, but it’s not the only one on the list. For example, why does it feature guys like Blake Bortles, Johnny Manziel, E.J. Manuel, Paxton Lynch, and Josh Rosen? None of those quarterbacks are still in the NFL. Some of them haven’t taken a snap in years. By the very definition, they can’t win the Super Bowl, and they’re not even worth discussing in this context in 2023.

It’s almost as if both the graphic and Cowherd’s entire segment were recycled, save for some new additions because he had nothing else interesting to talk about this time of year.

And that might be the most charitable interpretation.

Colin Cowherd embarrassingly learned MLB teams can’t trade draft picks for Shohei Ohtani while live on FS1

Shoutout to all of the baseball casuals out there.

Sometimes, if you don’t know what you’re talking about, you probably just shouldn’t actually talk about it.

Colin Cowherd is living proof of this concept.

On Friday’s episode of The Herd on FS1, Cowherd found himself in a debate with Jason McIntyre about what MLB teams should be trading for Shohei Ohtani.

If you haven’t heard, the Angels’ star is on the cusp of being traded as we get closer and closer to the MLB’s trade deadline. He’s probably not coming back in free agency, so it’s best for the Angels to get a return now to make their team better moving forward.

So, the question becomes, what would you ask for if you’re the Angels in return for the best player in baseball? Self-proclaimed baseball casual Colin Cowherd thought he came up with a brilliant answer.

Five (!!!!!) first-round picks, two prospects and two solid starters. That’s what his best guess was for the question of how much you could get for Ohtani.

[affiliatewidget_deal1]

But you actually can’t get that much. Not because Ohtani wouldn’t be worth it — he definitely would. But it’s actually just not allowed!

As it turns out, in baseball, you can’t trade draft picks. Particularly first and second-round MLB draft picks.

You can trade competitive balance picks. But comp picks are different. These are 14 picks that are dished out each year to the 10 smallest markets and the league’s bottom 10 revenue teams. There’s always some overlap there, which is how you get to 14 picks instead of 20. Those picks can be traded one time and one time only.

Cowherd’s producers eventually corrected him, but by then the damage had already been done. The take was spewed and now it’s all over the internet. Yikes.

Look, it isn’t easy hosting a television and radio show. We all get that. And baseball is sports — you’ve got to talk about sports on these shows. We understand that, too.

But, yo. Maybe don’t come with the scorching hot take if you don’t know the sport that well? Just a thought.

Fans thought this was hilarious. And, of course, they did. Because it totally was.

Colin Cowherd believes Bears QB Justin Fields has an ego problem

Buckle up, Bears fans. Your favorite media personality has another questionable Justin Fields take.

Don’t look now Chicago Bears fans, but your favorite media personality is at it again. It seems FS1’s Colin Cowherd has a monthly quota he needs to hit when talking about the Bears, specifically quarterback Justin Fields, and he recently had another hot take that has fans up in arms.

On Wednesday’s edition of “The Herd with Colin Cowherd”, Fields and his top-five running quarterback list became a topic of conversation. Cowherd wasn’t happy that the quarterback listed himself in that list, which also included Lamar Jackson, Cam Newton, Michael Vick, and Steve Young. The host went as far to say that Fields lacks self-awareness because he named himself to the list and seems to have an ego instead of confidence. “At quarterback, you’re the face of the franchise and you’re the coach on the field. So I’m going to hold you to a much higher standard of self-awareness and confidence over ego and chutzpah,” Cowherd said. “This isn’t the end of the world, it’s five percent. But I don’t love it for a quarterback that’s 5-20 and right now is closer to a bust than a star.”

The FS1 personality compared Fields to players like Johnny Manziel, Baker Mayfield, and Jameis Winston for having egos instead of confidence at the position. All because Fields named himself in a list of the top running quarterbacks in NFL history after he produced 1,143 rushing yards and eight touchdowns in 15 games while also breaking multiple records in the process. His 1,143 rushing yards were second-most for a quarterback in league history, only behind Jackson.

Cowherd believes Fields should have left himself off the list because of his lack of accomplishments in the win column. And though he repeatedly said that it wasn’t a big deal, the host continued to harp on the point.

Fields knows he needs to improve in certain areas heading into Year 3 and would be the first person to say that. In nearly every press conference, he’s exuded humility and a quiet confidence surrounding his abilities. If anything, him acknowledging his prowess as a running quarterback is the first hint of any ego at all.

It was another questionable take from Cowherd, who has had a few of those regarding the Bears in the last 12 months. But fans were having none of it on Twitter.

Colin Cowherd shares rookie expectations for Panthers QB Bryce Young

Colin Cowherd thinks that Bryce Young’s season will be very revealing

The Carolina Panthers made the splash of the NFL offseason by trading away two first-round picks, two second-round picks, and an ascending star at the wide receiver position in D.J. Moore to acquire the rights to the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft from the Chicago Bears.

While those are a lot of assets to move, when you believe as much in a guy as the Panthers do Bryce Young, you make the move. The former Alabama quarterback was subsequently selected with the top pick in the draft and tasked with rebuilding a Panthers franchise that hasn’t made the playoffs since January of 2018 and hasn’t won a playoff game since January 2016

Drafting No. 1 overall usually means you are going to the worst team in the league, but that’s not the case as the Panthers traded up to make the pick.

Carolina has some really nice skill-position players to surround Young as a rookie between guys like Miles Sanders and Adam Thielen. The Panthers also brought in head coach Frank Reich who has a proven track record of NFL success, especially at the quarterback position. They will also get to play in an expectedly-weak NFC South division and have quite a friendly schedule.

For all of those reasons, some people predict the Panthers as their dark horse team to make the playoffs in 2023. Colin Cowherd of FS1 has always been particularly high on Young and was one of the first people to view Carolina as a playoff team. Cowherd argues that with Alabama players, you can feel more comfortable because you already know what you are going to get. Nick Saban and his staff do a great job of getting as much talent of all of their players as possible so as a team you feel pretty confident in what their ceilings and floors are.

Cowherd argued on his show this week that we know what we can expect from Young in his rookie year. Cowherd says,

“There is a reason that Carolina and Frank Reich, who has a history of being very good with quarterbacks, gave up D.J. Moore and all of those picks to go to No. 1. They looked at that film and they felt watching that film they knew what they had. I still have questions about C.J. Stroud.”

Colin Cowherd questions Bill Belichick’s career without Tom Brady

Colin Cowherd is questioning Bill Belichick’s career without Tom Brady as his quarterback

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

The New England Patriots haven’t won a playoff game since Tom Brady was under center as the starting quarterback. As a result, the critics are growing louder when discussing the career of coach Bill Belichick.

We can now count FOX Sport’s Colin Cowherd among them.

The Patriots limped to an 8-9 finish in 2022, missing out on the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. Miscommunication ran rampant in the organization last year, and New England found themselves as the third place team in the AFC East.

Belichick’s critics are growing louder by the day, as the Patriots look to put themselves back into contention in the AFC. Cowherd questioned Belichick’s career without Brady in a previous show, as transcribed by NESN.com’s Gio Rivera.

“Maybe we should take a step back and go, ‘What really is he without Tom Brady?’ He doesn’t get along with his quarterback, he just made a defensive coordinator an offensive coordinator — a silly move that’s tone-deaf offense,” Cowherd said on FOX Sports’ “The Herd”. “What is he without Tom Brady? And it’s funny, I don’t think most people really talk about it.”

New England and Belichick will have a chance to prove themselves this season after bringing back Bill O’Brien as offensive coordinator. This year could be a pivotal one for the future of Belichick and the franchise as a whole.

NFC West Watch: Could the Rams really trade Aaron Donald this year?

While it seems like a remote possibility, there is some logic here.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

LA has two all-time legends playing football and baseball, respectively. As incredible as Aaron Donald and Shohei Ohtani are, there’s a suspicious amount of trade chatter surrounding both. While it seems completely bananas to trade a hundred-year talent like Ohtani, there’s a much better case for the Rams to deal Donald.

Here’s Jason McIntyre on Colin Cowherd’s show making five bold predictions for the NFC this coming season – including an Aaron Donald trade.

While it seems like a remote possibility, there is some logic here. If the Rams suffer a rash of injuries (like the Angels have this week) it will mean their Super Bowl window is firmly shut. That means it’ll make sense to try to get something in exchange for Aaron Donald – who’s now 32 years old – now before he decides to retire.

We would be shocked if this actually happens, but you can never assume anything in this business.

Cowherd: Lakers are delusional for wanting to pay Austin Reaves big bucks

Are the Lakers valuing Austin Reaves too much in free agency this summer? Colin Cowherd thinks so.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

One of the bright spots over the last two seasons for the Los Angeles Lakers has been guard Austin Reaves, who has emerged as a very good player and an improbable story.

He went undrafted two years ago and signed as a free agent on a two-way contract. At first, little was expected from him, but he quickly showed he had potential during his rookie season.

This year, he greatly improved his 3-point shooting while showing increased poise as a ball-handler and facilitator, and he grew better as the season wore on. In his first postseason, he continued to shine brightly while displaying plenty of confidence.

Reaves may never become an All-Star, but he has become very important to the Lakers’ championship hopes. In fact, they are reportedly a lock to do whatever it takes financially to keep the soon-to-be restricted free agent this summer.

But sports media personality Colin Cowherd thinks the Lakers are too enamored with the Arkansas native.

Cowherd did a blind comparison with players such as Grayson Allen, Patrick Beverley, Mac McClung and Kelly Olynyk, arguing that Reaves’ stats through two seasons are comparable with all four men. However, Reaves made a major jump this year, making such a comparison inaccurate and misleading.

The commentator argues that perhaps Los Angeles prizes Reaves so much because the team found him as its own diamond in the rough.

Colin Cowherd loves the Panthers decision to name Bryce Young as QB1

Colin Cowherd says Bryce Young needs to see the field as soon as possible

The Carolina Panthers selected Alabama star [autotag]Bryce Young[/autotag] with the No.1 pick in the 2023 NFL draft. So far, he could not be off to a better start in Charlotte.

Young’s greatest asset has always been his intangibles, and, to this point, he has blown away the coaching staff and his teammates with how mature and prepared he is.

Traditionally, when a quarterback was drafted into the NFL, he spent his rookie year sitting behind a veteran to learn the system and adapt to the speed of the game. In recent years, teams have tried to get their newly drafted signal callers onto the field as soon as possible.

I believe the best way to learn is by playing the game, and we have seen Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert and Josh Allen find significant success as rookies who started immediately.

Young appears to be the next guy in that line. The Panthers have already named him their QB1. This is a big deal for Young because it means he will get almost all of the first-team reps during the offseason. Andy Dalton is one of the best backup quarterbacks in the NFL and is more than capable of winning games, but Young is the future of the franchise, and it’s essential the Panthers see what they have on their hands.

Fox Sports Colin Cowherd weighed in on the Panthers’ decision, and he is a massive fan of it. Cowherd defends the Panthers’ decision to name Young as QB1 in June by saying,

“Frank Reich is an offensive coach, he gets it, he played it, he’s not tone deaf to it. Just give the guy (Young) all of the snaps and go. You’re not a Super Bowl team so it doesn’t matter. … For years and years, I believed the young guy should sit, but the world has changed. Bryce Young was a three-year starter in high school at a legendary Southern California program that feels like a college program. … Then he goes to Alabama and starts two years for Nick Saban, he’s ready to play.”

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Young’s progress with the Panthers.

Colin Cowherd makes bogus claim about John Mara and Daniel Jones

FOX Sports Radio host Colin Cowherd offered up a whopper of a claim as it relates to New York Giants co-owner John Mara and Daniel Jones.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

Did New York Giants co-owner John Mara force general manager Joe Schoen to re-sign quarterback Daniel Jones to a four-year, $160 million deal?

Quite simply and quite factually, the answer to that question is no. Mara did not and has not forced Schoen to do anything, and Schoen never would have taken the GM job if that were a possibility.

However, that didn’t stop Fox Sports Radio host Colin Cowherd from making a wildly inaccurate and bogus claim on Monday.

“The owner of the New York Giants forced his GM and his head coach to saddle up to Daniel Jones at a financial number of $40 million a year,” Cowherd said.

Following that blatantly false claim, Cowherd continued down a path of speculation, offering up his opinion as a matter of fact.

“I can argue [his contract] is double his value. They negotiated against themselves,” Cowherd said. “No one else would have signed Daniel Jones to anything resembling that contract.”

Cowherd continued to argue that Jones is “nothing” without running back Saquon Barkley and that the Giants should have used the franchise tag on DJ instead of Barkley. The problem with that notion is that the running back market is heavily depressed and tagging DJ would have likely meant the end of Barkley in East Rutherford, as Art Stapleton of USA TODAY mapped out.

Stapleton also shot down any notion that Mara forced Jones on Schoen and Daboll, each of whom has been very public with his support of DJ.

Had Jones been tagged (at $32.42 million guaranteed), not only would the Giants likely have lost Barkley, they would have been even more crippled by the salary cap than they currently are. That would have led to missing out on players such as linebacker Bobby Okereke, wide receiver Parris Campbell and defensive lineman Rakeem Nunez-Roches.

Cowherd is paid to offer wild commentary, but every now and then he goes completely off the rails. Such was the case on Monday when he offered up disinformation without hesitation and no shame.
