Celtics should target two wings and a big for trades in the 2023 offseason in new analysis

For the Celtics and the analysts who cover it, it is never too early to try to think about the future structure of the ball club.

Thinking about trades for the Boston Celtics before they even finish their postseason might seem a bit much for some fans, but for the organization and the analysts who cover it, it is never too early to think about the future structure of the club.

To such an end, Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley assembled a trio of potential targets for the Celtics to consider pursuing via trade in the looming 2023 NBA offseason. Suggesting that until proven otherwise that Boston “could still be a player or two away from getting over the proverbial hump,” Buckley sees some frontcourt and wing players on other teams at present as potentially wise additions to the team’s roster.

Let’s take a look at that trio.

New mock trade has Sixers acquiring Cody Martin from Hornets in a deal

A new mock trade has the Philadelphia 76ers acquiring Cody Martin from the Charlotte Hornets in a deal.

The Philadelphia 76ers want a title in the 2022-23 season, which means president Daryl Morey and the rest of the front office have work to do ahead of the Feb. 9 trade deadline.

At present, the Sixers have a very good roster led by Joel Embiid and James Harden. Even if there isn’t a big deal before the deadline, this roster has a puncher’s chance of reaching the finals because of what Embiid and Harden can do on a regular basis.

With that being said, it never hurts to look at a possible deal to see what’s available. A mock trade from Bleacher Report has the Sixers acquiring Cody Martin, a good wing defender, from the Charlotte Hornets.

A new cadre of players become trade eligible as of Jan. 15; Do any make sense for the Boston Celtics?

We found three that could — but only if you squint hard.

As the 2023 NBA trade deadline draws to within a month, interest in shaking up the rosters of one’s favorite ball clubs is becoming an increasingly popular pastime among fans of the Boston Celtics and the other 29 teams in the league.

Analysts of the league are fanning the flames to help with the proliferation of trade ideas with their own suggestions, and on top of the cadre of players who became available for trades on the unofficial start of this year’s trade season on December 15, we will see a new batch of players become available for trades on January 15 after limits on their being dealt for deals signed in the offseason lifts.

Our friends over at our sister site Hoops Hype’s podcast of the same name Michael Scotto and Yossi Gozlan put together a list of the best such players coming available tomorrow.

Report: Cody Martin to return to Hornets on four-year deal

Charlotte brings back the versatile three-year wing on a four-year deal.

The Hornets have resigned one of their own.

Reported by The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Cody Martin agreed to resign with the Hornets on a four-year, $32 million deal.

Martin became a consistent contributor for Charlotte during the 2021-22 season, averaging 7.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game while shooting 38% from 3-point range.

The three-year veteran provides the Hornets with a versatile wing, whether off the bench or as a starter, who can do a little bit of everything on both ends of the floor.

Sixers free agency: Cody Martin adds 3-and-D ability to the rotation

Cody Martin would bring depth and a big 3-and-D presence off the bench for the Philadelphia 76ers in free agency.

As the free agency period continues to come closer in the NBA, now is the time to look at some potential additions for the Philadelphia 76ers who will come cheap on the market. There are some helpful players on the free-agent market who will help Joel Embiid and James Harden right away as they continue on their title chase.

At the moment, the Sixers have the $6.4 million taxpayer mid-level exception to use, but they could open the full $10.3 million mid-level exception if they waive Danny Green, who will miss a good portion of the 2022-23 season.

Therefore, president Daryl Morey and co. will have to look for cheap options that will fit their roster. Sixers Wire has already listed five options who will fit in free agency, but it’s time for some deep dives continuing with Cody Martin:

5 realistic free agents Sixers should take a look at in 2022 offseason

Here are 5 free agents the Philadelphia 76ers should take a look at as they get into the 2022 offseason.

As the Philadelphia 76ers head into the draft and free agency portion of the offseason, there are some issues that have to be addressed with the roster. One is the lack of a “dawg” on the roster, which is something Joel Embiid wants addressed while the Sixers also need a 3-and-D player.

At the moment, the Sixers have the $6.4 million taxpayer mid-level exception to use, but they could open the full $10.3 million mid-level exception if they waive Danny Green, who will miss a good portion of the 2022-23 season.

Now, Philadelphia could clear more salary by dumping Furkan Korkmaz, Matisse Thybulle and Georges Niang. That would allow them to go after the bigger fish in the free agency pond, but they haven’t done so yet. So this list will be operating under the above parameters.

Here are five free agents who would fit the Sixers’ needs:

Hornets season preview: Is LaMelo Ball ready to become an All-Star?

The Charlotte Hornets are a team that can potentially exceed expectations, especially if LaMelo Ball is able to further improve his game.

The Charlotte Hornets are a team that can potentially exceed expectations, especially if LaMelo Ball is able to further improve his game.

Ball is one of the most exciting young players in basketball and the sky is the limit when it comes to his career. But there are still some questions about if that will translate to winning for the Hornets. For example, will he have enough talent around him to make a splash in the postseason?

Below, check out our preview for the 2021-22 Hornets campaign.

Cody Martin to start for Gordon Hayward in Hornets third preseason game vs. Magic

Cody Martin will get the starting nod in Thursday’s preseason game against the Orlando Magic for the injured Gordon Hayward

Cody Martin will get the starting nod in Thursday’s preseason game against the Orlando Magic for the injured Gordon Hayward, head coach James Borrego announced before the game.

Through the first two preseason games, Cody Martin has played the fifth-most minutes for the team, averaging 4.5 points per game. Borrego noted Martin’s defensive ability and the ease of sliding him into the starting lineup as the primary reasons for going with the third-year guard in the starting lineup.

On Wednesday, Hayward was diagnosed with a broken finger on his right hand that ruled him out for the team’s third preseason and the first on the road in Orlando. Hayward is still considered day-to-day moving forward and his status for the regular season opener on Dec. 23 is unknown.

In Thursday morning’s shootaround, Borrego expressed optimism of Hayward’s injury, though he would not speculate on his potential availability for the final preseason game or the regular season.

Hornets teammate Cody Martin raves about LaMelo Ball’s performance in practice: ‘It’s been fun so far’

New teammate Cody Martin raved about LaMelo Ball’s performance, approach to the game and mindset through the Hornets first two practices.

While it has only been two practices, LaMelo Ball is making an impact on the Hornets coaching staff and players. Head coach James Borrego has spoken multiple times about Ball through the opening two days of practice and teammate Cody Martin added some more insight to his rookie teammate’s performance while speaking to the media on Saturday.

“It’s hard to do comparisons but he’s a really willing passer,” Martin said. “His first instinct is to facilitate. Obviously, it’s fun for guys like us on the wings who will run the floor and just constantly looking up and able to keep your head on the ball because you never know what’s gonna come towards you.

“He gets it. He likes to play. He’s active when he gets a break up up the floor. He’s fast-paced. We’re always looking for a pass from him. It’s been fun so far.”

Ball’s playmaking reputation preceded him as his new teammates have come into training camp with some expectations of what to expect. Still, Martin and others have been impressed by his mindset and approach to the game each day so far.

“I just think that you kind of already get a sense from him that he’s the type of player who’s comfortable in a lot of different settings and environments,” Martin said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s the first day or the hundredth day, he’s going to come in and be Melo. He’s going to come in and, you know, just have fun with it. Obviously, there’s a lot of things he’s still trying to learn and he asks a lot of questions. He’s a willing learner as well because people forget that he’s young.

“He’s really, really young still. So, it’s pretty cool to see that he comes in and he’s willing to learn, just still trying to have fun with it.”

As much as Ball is known for his ability to pass the ball at an elite level, he’s also quickly gaining a reputation for his strong work ethic and as a gym rat. Those that were around him with Illawarra last season spoke as much but his first impression on Charlotte president Mitch Kupchak and Borrego likely made a lasting impact as well.

P.J. Washington hilariously roasted the Martin twins on Twitter

Washington hilariously roasted his Hornets teammates on social media early Wednesday morning.

As NBA players and athletes around the world attempt to stay busy during the coronavirus pandemic, Charlotte Hornets rookie P.J. Washington took to Twitter early Wednesday morning to roast a couple of his fellow rookie teammates.

The NBA on ESPN account tweeted a picture of twin brothers Cody Martin and Caleb Martin and asked if fans could differentiate which player is which. While on the court, Cody wears No. 11 and Caleb wears No. 10 but with their warmup gear on, it can be challenging to tell them apart.

Instead of trying to pick out the two, Washington just proceeded to call it a day and hilariously labeled them both ugly.

The two brothers each made the Hornets’ opening-night roster this season after Cody, the 36th overall pick, signed a three-year contract in July. Caleb, who was undrafted, inked a three-year, partially-guaranteed contact in October.

Cody and Caleb became the first twins in NBA history on Oct. 25 to appear in the same game as teammates during their rookies seasons. They each recorded four points during that game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
