Seahawks rookie CB Coby Bryant tweets about his underdog mentality

One of the best reasons to feel hopeful is Cincinnati’s Coby Bryant.

The Seahawks made a serious investment at cornerback in the 2022 NFL draft. In the fourth and fifth round, they doubled up on a position that had been their greatest weakness heading into last season. While it’s not on par with the original Legion of Boom, this secondary looks to be one of the team’s strongest units this year thanks to that investment.

One of the best reasons to feel hopeful is Cincinnati’s Coby Bryant, who won the Jim Thorpe award last year – given to the most outstanding defensive back in college football. While he’s not as highly-touted as his former teammate Ahmad Gardner and not as athletic as new teammate Tariq Woolen, Bryant has made a career for himself by out-performing most of his competitors.

Last night on Twitter Bryant shared a tweet talking about that underdog mentality he’s bringing to Seattle.

The Seahawks have signed most of their 2022 rookie class, but Bryant is an exception. If you’re looking for a party to blame it’s the Texans, who gave their fourth-round pick – Florida running back Dameon Pierce – an extra $25,000 workout bonus upon signing. That’s held up contracts for all of the other fourth-rounders around the league (including Bryant), whose agents are no doubt fishing for a similar carrot.

Once he’s officially under contract Bryant could have a chance to earn some real playing time. We are projecting he will start on the outside opposite Sidney Jones Week 1.

Seahawks: 7 takeaways from Tuesday’s OTAs practice

Here are a few takeaways from the team and the media.

The Seahawks held the second of their final three OTA practices today, which was open to the media. Last week, coach Pete Carroll described these three sessions as a kind of “passing camp,” and it appears attendance was voluntary.

Here are a few takeaways from the team and the media.

ESPN analyst Louis Riddick calls the Seahawks ‘a sleeping giant’

Some folks believe there’s a sleeper in the Pacific Northwest.

Most people aren’t expecting much from the Seahawks this year. Sportsbooks are projecting them to have around five or six wins at the end of the season and their odds of winning the Super Bowl are around 100 to 1.

There’s always a chance they’re wrong, though. While it would come as a shock if they make any kind of playoff run, totally writing off a team that hasn’t played a single snap yet generally isn’t a good idea. Some folks believe there’s a sleeper in the Pacific Northwest.

ESPN analyst Louis Riddick was a guest on the Mike Salk show this morning and said some interesting things about Seattle. Specifically, he praised rookie cornerbacks Coby Bryant and Tariq Woolen and called the Seahawks a sleeping giant.

If they’re going to live up to Riddick’s hype, they’ll definitely need both Bryant and Woolen to be quick studies and wind up starting at the outside cornerback spots. At least three other critical young players will also have to have very strong 2022 seasons: quarterback Drew Lock, left tackle Charles Cross and right tackle Abe Lucas.

If those five can hit the ground running and (especially in Lock’s case) exceed expectations, almost anything is possible.

Seahawks: 4 positions where they got weaker this offseason

Here are four positions where the Seahawks are weaker than last season.

The Seahawks are probably going to get worse before they get better. That’s just the unfortunate facts heading into the 2022 season. While there is a legitimate youth movement building for this roster, it will likely take at least another year for the transformation to be complete and they’re ready to compete in the NFC again.

Here are four positions where this team is weaker than they were last season.

Seahawks rookie cornerback Coby Bryant has real shot to start this year

Seattle Seahawks rookie cornerback Coby Bryant has a legitimate chance to compete for a starting role in the defense for the 2022 season.

In the Seattle Seahawks’ quest to rebuild the Legion of Boom, finding the perfect fits at the cornerback spots has been difficult, to say the least. Seattle did pick up two corners in this year’s NFL draft and one seems to have a real chance at starting this season.

Coby Bryant, selected in the fourth round at No. 109 overall, made NFL.com draft analyst Chad Reuter’s list of the top day-three rookies who could compete for starting snaps in their first year.

“Seattle’s depth at cornerback is a big question mark heading into the 2022 season,” Reuter acknowledges. “Sidney Jones was re-signed after starting 11 games, while Tre Brown is coming off a knee injury and veteran Artie Burns was brought in on a one-year free agent deal. Bryant, the winner of the 2021 Jim Thorpe Award (given to college football’s top defensive back), has the experience and toughness to step into a starting role if necessary.”

With OTAs kicking off and mandatory minicamp just around the corner, we should get a better look at how Bryant stacks up against the veterans in short order.

Cornerback will be one of the most exciting positions to watch throughout training camp this summer so stay tuned to see how things play out at the VMAC.

Seahawks: Winners and losers following the 2022 NFL draft

The new strategy the Seahawks used in the draft is a positive development, but some people now have cause to be nervous about their job security.

With a few exceptions, the Seattle Seahawks are mostly getting great reviews for their work in the 2022 NFL draft.

While the new strategy we saw the front office use in the draft is a positive development for the franchise overall, some people now have good cause to be nervous about their job security. Here are a few winners and losers around the organization following the influx of young talent.

Richard Sherman: Seahawks got a steal with Coby Bryant in fourth round

The Seahawks’ 2022 NFL draft class is so good that even their most vocal critic can’t find fault in it.

The Seahawks’ 2022 NFL draft class is so good that even their most vocal critic can’t find fault in it. Former Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman has gone out of his way to praise some of the team’s picks, including Michigan State running back Kenneth Walker III in the second round.

On his podcast that was released yesterday, Sherman also said he really likes the Seahawks getting Cincinnati corner and Jim Thorpe award winner Coby Bryant in the fourth round.

Bryant is an exception to the rule for this 2022 Seahawks rookie class when it comes to athletic testing – where he’s only slightly above average at his position.

However, Bryant more than proved he’s capable of balling out on the field even in a difficult situation. With opposing quarterbacks desperately trying to avoid throwing at his teammate Sauce Gardner (who went to the Jets at No. 4 overall), Bryant got a lot of attention and acquitted himself extremely well. He totaled nine picks and 35 pass breakups in college.

Seahawks: Reviewing all 9 of their picks in the 2022 NFL draft

Here is a review of all nine selections the Seattle Seahawks made over the last three days.

The 2022 NFL draft has come to an end.

Here is a review of all nine selections the Seattle Seahawks made over the last three days.

Quandre Diggs excited about CB draft picks Tariq Woolen and Coby Bryant

Seattle Seahawks veteran defensive back Quandre Diggs is pleased with the Seattle Seahawks CB draft picks Tariq Woolen and Coby Bryant.

The Seattle Seahawks continue to work on their most vulnerable positions in the 2022 NFL draft. After selecting cornerback Coby Bryant at No. 109 overall, Seattle used its next pick to snag another cornerback. This time, it’s UTSA corner Tariq Woolen following a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The secondary for the Seahawks has been a sieve when it comes to defending the pass, providing little resistance to opposing offenses. In a division with the likes of Cooper Kupp, DeAndre Hopkins and George Kittle, this is a problem.

Fortunately for the Seahawks, they have drafted two corners who are generating positive buzz, especially from the leader of the secondary, safety Quandre Diggs.

Diggs has been nothing short of excellent and a turnover-creating machine since joining the Seahawks following a trade from Detroit in the 2019 season. The recent extension he signed this offseason will keep him in the Emerald City for three more years and Diggs is certainly looking forward to his new teammates.

Bryant is even having a little fun back with the veteran safety.

Seahawks double down on 2 premium positions in fifth round of 2022 NFL draft

The Seattle Seahawks are doing things differently in the NFL draft this year.

Whether it’s the influence of associate head coach Sean Desai or something in the water of Lake Washington, the Seattle Seahawks are doing things differently in the NFL draft this year. Instead of their usual reaches for off-ball linebackers and guards, the team has for the most part stuck to taking the best players available at premium positions outside of quarterback.

With their two selections in the fifth round, Seattle doubled down at two of them. First, they chose lanky UTSA cornerback Tariq Woolen at No. 153 overall despite just having drafted Cincinnati’s Coby Bryant in Round 4. Then, they followed that by taking a second EDGE prospect in Ohio State’s Tyreke Smith after selecting Minnesota’s Boye Mafe in the second round.

The Seahawks did pick a running back too early by taking Michigan State’s Kenneth Walker III at No. 40. However, by and large this is a good strategy for the modern game. Seattle fans should be pleased with the results so far.
