Best and worst PFF grades for the Seahawks from Week 1

Here are the top and bottom five grades on both sides of the ball for Seattle this week according to the Pro Football Focus grades.

The Seahawks may be 1-0 in our hearts, but they’ve started off the 2023 season with an 0-1 record after getting creamed by the Rams yesterday. The worst of it came on the back end of their defense, where a secondary that was supposed to be this unit’s strength was whooped by Tutu Atwell and Puka Nacua in the absence of Cooper Kupp. However, they did get some strong performances from their linebacker corps, both inside and out.

Here are the top and bottom five grades on both sides of the ball for Seattle this week according to the Pro Football Focus grades.

Three Seahawks defenders attempted to draw the team logo

Love has since shared his regret over the drawing.

Some professional football players are incredibly talented human beings all around. There are even some real artists around the league. Christian McCaffrey plays piano and the Eagles offensive line has a Christmas album, to name a few. We can probably count out these three Seahawks defenders from having a future in painting, though.

Yesterday Mina Kimes shared a screenshot from Instagram of three drawings – one from Coby Bryant, another from Dre’Mont Jones and one from Julian Love – all trying to capture Seattle’s team logo. Observe.

Sadly, it seems that Jones was the closest to the mark, here. At least Bryant got the general shape of the logo right, but there really aren’t any redeeming qualities for Love’s angry duck having an orgasm.

Love has since shared his regret over the drawing.

As for their day jobs, Jones and Love will both be in the starting lineup come Week 1. Meanwhile, Bryant has moved from slot corner to safety, so he’ll be backing up Love, Quandre Diggs and Jamal Adams when he returns.

Devin Bush posts highest PFF grade for Seahawks in Preseason Week 1

Here are the best and worst performers on both sides of the ball this week according to PFF.

A lot may be riding on how Devin Bush performs for the Seattle Seahawks early on during the 2023 season. With Jordyn Brooks still on the PUP list with an ACL injury, odds are Bush will wind up starting next to Bobby Wagner at inside linebacker when Week 1 comes around.

Seattle got good news from its first preseason game of the year on this score, as Bush balled out in the Seahawks’ 24-13 win over the Vikings on Thursday night. On film Bush was stout against the run and it seems the analysts at Pro Football Focus agree. Bush posted the highest overall grade on the team this week, aided by a high mark in run defense.

Coby Bryant talks big hit while rocking Legion of Boom t-shirt

One of Seattle’s top rookie standouts from last season, defensive back Coby Bryant, is certainly trying to bring the boom back

The Seattle Seahawks are clearly focusing on rebuilding their secondary back to a fearsome, hyperphysical force. It’s partly why they opted to draft cornerback Devon Witherspoon at No. 5 overall instead of defensive tackle Jalen Carter.

One of Seattle’s top rookie standouts from last season, defensive back Coby Bryant, is certainly trying to bring the boom back. He had a huge hit (which was flagged) in the first quarter, but it brought the juice to the 12’s.

After the game, Bryant discussed his play, all while wearing a classic Legion of Boom t-shirt.

Mark Schlereth: Seahawks DBs deeper than the Legion of Boom

It may sound like blasphemy, but he’s right, keeping in mind that depth wasn’t what made the LOB great.

Yesterday Mark Schlereth was a guest on the Brock and Salk show and made some interesting comments regarding the Seahawks’ roster. For one thing, Schlereth thinks Seattle’s current secondary is deeper than the Legion of Boom was. Watch.

It may sound like blasphemy, but he’s right, keeping in mind that depth wasn’t what made the LOB great – it was three Hall of Famers along with a rotating cast of mostly-forgettable DBs. Brandon Browner, Byron Maxwell and Jeremy Lane all had their good qualities, but there’s a reason why people only think of Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor and Richard Sherman when they hear LOB.

Meanwhile, this current Seahawks secondary has three Pro-Bowlers in Riq Woolen, Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs. They also have a top-five overall pick in Devon Witherspoon, two respectable corners in Tre Brown and Mike Jackson, a Jim Thorpe award winner with Coby Bryant and the remarkably underrated safety Julian Love.

There are better secondary units around the NFL, but this one has a chance to earn the title of the deepest in the league.

Wisconsin cornerback graded in top 10 within Big Ten by PFF

With one of the most anticipated Badger football seasons on closing in, PFF graded one of their cornerbacks within the top 10 in the Big Ten.

With one of the most anticipated Badger football seasons on the horizon, PFF graded one of their cornerbacks within the top 10 in the Big Ten. Entering his sixth and final season in Madison, Alexander Smith is the eighth highest rated cornerback returning to the conference in 2023.

Smith has spent five seasons with the Badgers so far, appearing in seven games in 2022. Over those contests, he was able to log 17 tackles while deflecting two passes. The cornerback has only reeled in one interception over 19 collegiate games, but he’ll look to raise that number in his final year.

New head coach Luke Fickell and defensive coordinator Mike Tressel have worked with successful cornerbacks in the past, coaching both Sauce Gardner (NYJ) and Coby Bryant (SEA) while with the Cincinnati Bearcats.

Wisconsin offers class of 2024 cornerback from Maryland

The Badgers offered Lloyd Irvin III, a 6-foot-3 class of 2024 cornerback from Upper Marlboro, Maryland on Tuesday.

The Badgers offered Lloyd Irvin III, a 6-foot-3 class of 2024 cornerback from Upper Marlboro, Maryland on Tuesday. The 175-pound athlete does not carry an official recruit rating from 247Sports but he is teammates with four-star edge rusher Obinna Onwuka, who Wisconsin also offered.

Irvin has now received 16 Division 1 offers, including Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State and Wisconsin from within the Big Ten. New head coach Luke Fickell and defensive coordinator Mike Tressel developed star NFL cornerback Sauce Gardner (Jets) as well as Coby Bryant (Seahawks) in their time at Cincinnati.

If Irvin were to pick Madison, he’d join safety Kahmir Prescott (Philadelphia, PA) as the second class of 2024 addition in the Badgers’ secondary.

Seahawks rookie class receives high marks in 2022 season grades

Following an impressive first year, the Seattle Seahawks rookies received high marks in Eric Edholm’s end-of-the-season grades.

The Seattle Seahawks rookie class came out on top in the NFC West rookie grades, receiving an A- from Eric Edholm of NFL.com.

“It’s not a stretch to say that the Seahawks might not have returned to the postseason without the contributions of their rookie class,” Edholm writes. “They received notable playing time from six first-year players — three on offense, three on defense — and replenished some of the depth issues that plagued Seattle down the stretch in recent seasons.”

Seattle selected two offensive tackles last April, Charles Cross and Abraham Lucas, who both earned starting roles in their first season. The Seahawks also picked up running back Kenneth Walker III, who actually received more first-place votes for Offensive Rookie of the Year than the winner Garrett Wilson.

The Seahawks rookies shined on the defensive side of the ball as well.

“Tariq Woolen and Coby Bryant might be the Seahawks’ starting corners for the next few years,” Edholm continued. “How Woolen fell to Round 5 is anyone’s guess, but he’s a Seattle-style corner if there ever was one, tying for the league lead in picks with six (one pick-six) and flashing outstanding playmaking ability. Bryant opened eyes with four forced fumbles and has the makings of a quality slot corner if he can clean up his tackling and tighten his coverage a shade.

“Boye Mafe brought energy as a subpackage rusher and figures to reprise that role — or even start — in 2023.”

CBS Sports ranks Seahawks rookie class No. 2 in NFL behind only Jets

After an impressive 2022 campaign, the Seattle Seahawks rookie class earned second-place awards from CBS Sports, behind only the NY Jets.

Now that the Super Bowl is in the books, analysts around the league are busy with their final power rankings to assess to where teams stack up after the 2022 season. One of the more telling metrics is how each team’s rookie class performed in year one.

Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports ranked each club based on players who “hit” in their rookie seasons and the Seahawks’ class came in at No. 2 overall, behind only the Jets.

“The Seahawks wouldn’t have sniffed the postseason without stellar play from their rookie class,” Trapasso writes. “(Kenneth) Walker got the most first-place votes for Offensive Rookie of the Year, while (Abe) Lucas and (Charles) Cross were nasty blockers from Week 1 on.”

“Then there’s (Tariq) Woolen, an impossibly tall, fast cornerback who was supposed to be a long-term project,” Trapasso continues. “He wasn’t super-sticky in coverage late in the season yet hauled in six interceptions early.

“Impressive city.”
