Gear: Cobra Darkspeed LS, Darkspeed X, Darkspeed Max fairway woods
Price: $429 with UST Mamiya LIN-Q M40X White shaft and Lamkin Crossline grip. $329 (Darkspeed LS), with UST Mamiya LIN-Q M40X Blue or UST Mamiya LIN-Q M40X Red shaft (Darkspeed Max, X)
Specs: Titanium face and body with carbon fiber crown and adjustable weights and adjustable hosel (Darkspeed LS); Stainless steel body and face with carbon fiber crown and moveable weights and adjustable hosel (Darkspeed Max, X).
Available: January 11 (pre-sale), January 19 (in-stores)

Who It’s For: Golfers who want more ball speed and distance with some adjustability (Darkspeed LS). Golfers who want more distance and forgiveness (Darkspeed Max, X).

The Skinny: The Darkspeed LS has a titanium face and body with a carbon fiber crown for players who want a low-spin option off the tee that does not sacrifice distance. In contrast, the Max and the X versions have extra stability and forgiveness.

The Deep Dive: Finding just the suitable fairway wood can be challenging because you want a club that fills a distance gap and can hit a specific yardage both off the tee and from the fairway. With the release of the three Darkspeed fairway woods — the LS, the Max and the X — Cobra is giving players and fitters a wide variety of clubs and several different ball flights to choose from.

The most interesting is the Darkspeed LS, a club made for fast-swinging players who generate excessive spin and need a club that produces a lower ball flight.

The Darkspeed LS was designed like a small driver, with a titanium body, titanium face and carbon fiber crown. The titanium faces in the Darkspeed LS fairway woods can be made thinner than their stainless steel counterparts, which saves weight while still allowing them to flex more at impact for increased ball speed.

Inside the Darkspeed LS, Cobra has added a 19-gram tungsten weight pad in the heel and two areas. The internal weights boost the moment of inertia (MOI) and, combined with the internal PWR Bridge bar that extends from the heel to the toe area, lowers the center of gravity (CG) location.

Opting for a titanium body and a carbon fiber crown saved even more weight, which allowed designers to add three moveable weights to the sole, two in the forward area and one in the back. The Darkspeed LS comes standard with two 15-gram weights and one 3-gram weight, and when the heavier weights are in the front, the club produces more ball speed, less spin and the lowest launch angle. However, players and fitters can move the weights to simultaneously boost stability and create either a draw or fade bias.

The Darkspeed LS comes in 13, 14.5 and 17.5-degree versions, but using the MyFly adjustable hosel, players and fitters can increase or decrease the loft by up to 1.5 degrees to help them find the ideal ball flight and distance.

The Darkspeed X and Max fairway woods are constructed similarly, but instead of using titanium, they each feature a 475 stainless steel PWRShell face and 17-4 stainless steel chassis.

The PWRShell face extends the hitting area below the leading edge and into the sole, which helps to broaden the sweet spot and enhance performance on low-struck shots. And, like the Darkspeed LS, the Darkspeed X and Max fairway woods have the MyFly adjustable hosel system, and an internal PWRBridge weight helps to lower the CG location to encourage higher-flying shots.

The Darkspeed X (15, 16.5, 18 and 21 degrees) has a 3-gram weight in the back of the sole that increases stability and gives the head a neutral shot-shape bias.

The Darkspeed Max (15.5, 18.5 and 21.5 degrees) has two weight ports and comes standard with a 15-gram and a 3-gram weight, along with ports in the heel and back of the sole. When the heavier weight is in the heel, the Max has a draw bias, but when it is in the back, the MOI, forgiveness, spin rate and launch angle all go up.

VIDEO: Meet Cobra’s Aerojet 2023 line of drivers and irons

Cobra’s push to help golfers swing faster, create more ball speed and develop the shot shape their desire.

In this video, Golfweek’s David Dusek speaks with Tom Olsavsky of Cobra as they break down the new 2023 Aerojet line of drivers, fairway woods, hybrids and irons.

“More speed and distance for golfers. We’re trying to get that in every club.” Olsavsky said. “And one of the keys in that technology is something called the Powershell face, which actually was pioneered in our irons for about five years.”

The new Cobra Aerojet lineup does not come in every color on the rainbow, but they continue Cobra’s push to help golfers swing faster, create more ball speed and develop the shot shape their desire. They are for different types of golfers but share many technologies and features.

Get more details on the new Cobra Aerojet family of drivers, fairway woods, hybrids and irons in the link below.

Who It’s For: Golfers looking for more ball speed and distance off the tee and from the fairway.

The Skinny: Designed to match the Aerojet drivers, the Aerojet fairway woods have an internal weight to optimize the center of gravity location for increased ball speed, lower spin rates and more distance.

The Deep Dive: During the development of the Cobra Aerojet drivers, the brand’s designers focused on improving aerodynamics and making the clubs faster through the air. When it came to creating matching fairway woods, in some ways, the job was easier. Fairway woods are significantly smaller than drivers, so they are inherently more aerodynamic. However, adding some of the technologies that went into the Aerojet drivers made the fairway woods perform better too.

To increase ball speed and boost distance, Cobra added the PWR-COR weight system to each of the new LTDx fairway woods. As with the system in the LTDx drivers, it involves positioning an 8-gram aluminum and tungsten weight low and forward in the head, directly behind the leading edge. It lies flush along the sole and shifts the center of gravity down and forward, reducing spin and increasing ball speed.

Fans of Cobra’s fairway woods may notice the company’s signature rail system is missing on the LTDx 3-wood. Designers had to remove the rails to make room for the PWR-COR weight, but for golfers using their 3-wood off the tee, that should not be a problem. The LTDx 5-woods and 7-woods, which golfers more frequently use off turf and hit with a steeper swing, still have rails to help the heads work over the turf more efficiently.

Cobra designers created a new hitting area that they call a H.O.T. Face to further increase ball speed. It stands for Highly Optimized Technology and was developed after engineers studied 15 locations on the face and made them work more efficiently. Cobra said golfers will obtain better performance on shots hit outside the center of the face, so mis-hits will fly farther and straighter.

Cobra anticipates that the LTDx Max will be the most popular of the three new fairway woods. Available as a 3-wood (15.5 degrees), 5-wood (18.5 degrees), and 7-wood (22.5 degrees), it comes with two moveable weights that can be positioned in the back of the heel of the club. They weigh 3-grams and 8-grams, and when the heavier weight is in the heel, the LTDx Max has a draw bias. Putting the 8-gram weight in the back boosts the moment of inertia and creates more stability.

The standard LTDx fairway woods have only a single 8-gram weight in the back center of the sole. Available as a 3-wood (15 degrees), 5-wood (18.5 degrees), and 7-wood (22.5 degrees), this club focuses on speed and stability. It should help golfers launch the ball higher with more spin to maximize carry distance and stopping power.

For players who create excessive spin, Cobra is offering the LTDx LS. Available as a 3-wood (14.5 degrees) and 5-wood (17.5 degrees), the LTDx LS comes with a 3-gram and 12-gram weight that can be put in the front heel and toe areas. Adding more weight to the front of the head reduces spin even more while giving the club either a draw or fade bias. The LTDx LS also has a deeper face, which many accomplished players prefer.

Cobra King Speedzone fairway woods

A milled face, carbon fiber crown, tungsten weight and a railed sole helps Cobra’s newest fairways enhance distance and forgiveness.

Gear: Cobra King Speedzone fairway woods
Price: $279 with UST Helium 4, Mitsubishi Tensei AV Blue or Project X HZRDUS Yellow shaft and Lamkin Crossline Connect grips
Specs: Stainless steel body with carbon-fiber crown, CNC-milled face and adjustable hosel. Available models range from 13.5-degrees to 22.5-degrees of loft
Available: Jan. 17, 2020

Cobra’s newest fairway woods, the King Speedzone, combine several distance-enhancing elements found in the company’s drivers with features that make hitting off the turf and from the rough easier.

As with the Cobra F9 drivers and fairway woods from last season, the new King Speedzone fairway woods have a stainless steel face that is CNC-milled. While most faces are soldered onto the heads and then hand-ground and polished to create the curvature required, for the Speedzone fairway woods a computer controls a high-speed tool that passes over the hitting area and shaves away tiny pieces of metal. This allows Cobra to control the thickness of the face more precisely, and the company said the result is more ball speed.

The use of carbon fiber in the crown saves a significant amount of weight. Much of that goes into a 12-gram tungsten weight in the back of the head that pulls the center of gravity down and away from the hitting area. This should encourage a higher launch and more forgiveness.

Cobra updated the railed sole of the King Speedzone fairways. As with previous clubs, the rails still make it easier to maintain speed through the hitting zone and keep the club from digging into the turf, but Cobra reengineered the portion of the rails behind the leading edge and made them hollow. The hollow area of the rail system lets the face flex more easily on shots struck low in the hitting area while still giving golfers turf-interaction benefits.

While the standard King Speedzone fairway woods will be offered as a 3-wood (14.5 degrees), 5-wood (18.5 degrees) and 7-wood (22.5 degrees), Cobra also designed a Tour version and a Big Tour version of the clubs because some players consider their fairway woods to be secondary driving clubs.

The Speedzone Tour (14 and 17.5 degrees) has a more compact shape with its tungsten weight just behind the leading edge. Its center of gravity is slightly more forward for a lower ball flight and less spin.

The Speedzone Big Tour (13.5 degrees) can almost be thought of as a mini driver. It has the strongest loft, the largest volume and, like the Tour version, its tungsten weight is forward to enhance ball speed and reduce spin.

All three King Speedzone fairway woods come with the MyFly8 adjustable hosel mechanism, which allows players and fitters to increase or decrease a club’s stated loft by as many as 1.5 degrees to make gap-fitting easier.
