More clarity comes to light on Myles Garrett missing opening series vs. Saints

More clarity has been provided as to why Myles Garrett missed the opening series against the Saints.

The Cleveland Browns have been eliminated from postseason contention after a loss to the New Orleans Saints on Christmas Eve. However, one of the weirder storylines of the game revolved around Pro Bowl defensive end Myles Garrett as he missed the opening defensive series of the game for the Browns.

When head coach Kevin Stefanski was asked about it, he stated it was a team issue and his decision to sit Garrett. According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland dot com, however, Garrett was disciplined for lack of communication last week after missing two practices with a cold. In all reality, Garrett was sick and did not call off from work. That would earn anyone a write-up at their job, so not getting the registered start seems like a punishment that fit the crime.

Kevin Stefanski on Myles Garrett sitting out first series: ‘That was my decision’

The Browns were without their best player on the opening series, and the reason why remains a mystery.

As the Cleveland Browns fell short against the New Orleans Saints on Christmas Eve, one of the more bizarre situations happened. Coming off of a terrorizing performance against the Baltimore Ravens, defensive end and Pro Bowler Myles Garrett was not on the field for the opening possession of the game. When asked about it by the media, head coach Kevin Stefanski remained tight-lipped on the matter, stating:

“That was just a team thing. That was my decision.”

He would not go into further detail. Garrett missed practice throughout the week with an illness, so he could have just been on a pitch count. Regardless, it was odd to see him sit out that very first series.

Denzel Ward looking forward to facing old teammate in Commanders WR Terry McLaurin

Denzel Ward and Terry McLaurin were teammates at Ohio State, and now they get the chance to face-off when the Browns and Commanders go to battle.

As the Cleveland Browns and Washington Commanders get set for battle this weekend, a pair of former Ohio State Buckeyes will face off for the first time against one another. Former teammates, Denzel Ward is eager for the opportunity to get after wide receiver Terry McLaurin. Speaking on McLaurin today, Ward had this to say:

“Terry, he is a phenomenal player. I went to school with Terry. A leader so I know he is the leader for that team and he was a leader for us Buckeyes back in those days. A great player. A great person. Looking forward to competing against him this week.”

T Jack Conklin on signing extension before free agency: ‘This is home for us’

Jack Conklin spoke on his extension today.

Just before Saturday’s loss against the New Orleans Saints, the Cleveland Browns and right tackle Jack Conklin agreed to a four-year extension. Conklin will net about $15 million per season, and received $31 million in guaranteed money. This buys Conklin at least two more seasons in Cleveland.

Asked about it today, Conklin had this to say:

“Really, this is home for us. This is where we want to raise our kids. When it came down to it, we didn’t really want to have to go to free agency and take the chance of having to move. I love this organization, this town and the fans. My family feels at home here. This really, exactly like you said, is where we want to make our home forever, and I am happy I get to be here for the next four years and keep on playing for the Browns.”

Conklin certainly could have netted more money if he hit the open market, signing just the 20th-highest-paid tackle deal in the NFL. That number will certainly go up as well, as the market is going to get reset by those cashing in this offseason.

This speaks highly of Conklin and how he feels about this organization and the city.

4 Downs: Icy home-field advantage makes no impact on dome-ridden Saints

That was one of the more forgettable games to have ever been played.

No dome, no problem for the New Orleans Saints who came into the supposedly advantaged Cleveland Browns in icy, outdoor conditions. In the coldest game in Cleveland since 1981, the Saints beat the Browns by a score of 17-10 despite their natural habitat being in a roofed facility in Louisiana. The only scoring play for Cleveland came on a 12-yard run by Deshaun Watson.

Falling to 6-9 on the season, the Browns have sealed back-to-back losing seasons under head coach Kevin Stefanski. The Saints advance to 6-9 on the season as well. With two weeks to go, the Browns look to pick up the pieces against the Washington Commanders next week.

For another edition of 4 Downs, what stood out from this largely unforgettable game between the Browns and Saints?

WATCH: Browns, Deshaun Watson strike first on 12-yard run vs. Saints

The Browns strike first against the Saints!

The Cleveland Browns have a 7-0 lead against the New Orleans Saints just about a quarter into this game as quarterback Deshaun Watson ran one in for the score from 12 yards out. This came off of a Grant Delpit interception that he returned deep into New Orleans territory.

In extremely frigid temperatures, neither team is finding much success on offense. In a low-scoring affair, going up by two scores may be enough to close this one out. Can the Browns continue to do what they do and win on the ground to grind out the clock against the Saints to give this fanbase an early Christmas gift?

Browns vs. Saints is coldest home game in Cleveland since 1981

There has not been a colder regular season game in Cleveland in the last 30 years

There has not been a colder game in Northeast Ohio as the Cleveland Browns and New Orleans Saints take the field at FirstEnergy Stadium today in the last 30 years. At kickoff, the temperature came in at just six degrees off of the shores of Lake Erie; this registers as the coldest home game since 1981 for the Browns.

While some players, including tight end David Njoku, went shirtless pregame, there is no way they were comfortable looking that tough. Expect a low-scoring affair today as the Browns and Saints look to fight through these ice-cold temperatures in Cleveland on Christmas Eve.

Jadeveon Clowney, Demetric Felton lead six inactives vs. Saints

The Browns have announced their six inactives today

As the Cleveland Browns and New Orleans Saints get set for their Christmas Eve showdown, the home team has announced their six inactives in this one. Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is not a surprise inactive as he was ruled out with a concussion this week, but both wide receivers Jaelon Darden and Demetric Felton being shelved is a bit odd.

For the Saints, they will be without a handful of starters as wide receivers Chris Olave and Jarvis Landry, cornerback Marshon Lattimore, linebacker Pete Werner, and defensive end Payton Turner will all miss this matchup against the Browns.

Who else was listed as inactive for the Browns? We take a look here.

Carly and Wyatt Teller welcome their first child Brooks

Congrats to Carly and Wyatt Teller!

As the Cleveland Browns get set to take on the New Orleans Saints, there is some non-football news to pass on. There is a new member of the Browns as Carly and Wyatt Teller have welcomed their first child. Christmas came early for the Teller family as Brooks Wyatt Teller joined them just before the Holiday festivities begin.

Congrats to both Carly and Wyatt as they soak in the newborn experience.

Report: Browns expected to retain head coach Kevin Stefanski after 2022

The Haslems “haven’t considered making a change.”

You have to love some pre-game news dumps as the Cleveland Browns and the New Orleans Saints get set for their Christmas Eve battle. While it was expected throughout the season that head coach Kevin Stefanski would get the chance to see through a full season with quarterback Deshaun Watson, Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports has stated that Jimmy and Dee Haslem “haven’t considered making a change.”

Jones, however, did hint that the Browns could look to bring in a new face or two on their offensive staff to help meld the classic wide-zone system with some of the concepts that best suit Watson’s play style. Stefanski has done a good job of incorporating zone-reads, run-pass-options, and increasing tempo and empty looks over the last three weeks, but hiring a guy who specializes in Spread and Air Raid concepts would be a great idea for the Browns.
