Why the Chargers would be a good landing spot for Myles Garrett

Browns star Myles Garrett requested a trade on Monday, and the Chargers make a ton of sense as possible suitors in a trade.

There is just one game remaining in the NFL season, so the offseason rumor mill has already fired up. On Monday morning, Browns defensive end Myles Garrett requested a trade after eight incredible seasons in Cleveland.

Every fan’s initial reaction is how their team can try and trade for the six-time Pro Bowler and future Hall of Famer. There are only a select few teams in the league that are realistic, legitimate suitors for Garrett though.

The verdict is still out on just who those teams could be. A trade for Garrett would likely require a first-round pick and more, something that any team should be willing to fork over for a player of his caliber.

This is all if he does get truly traded, although the Browns have minimal leverage at this point. The Chargers could be a potential landing spot for Garrett though, and the fit makes sense for a few different reasons:

Money

Garrett signed a five-year, $125 million extension back in 2020, which is considered to be a steal of a contract for him nowadays. The veteran star has two years left on his contract, and not every team can afford his $20 million cap hit each of the next two seasons. The Chargers are one of the teams that could afford him, as they enter this offseason with over $63 million in cap space, the fifth-most in the NFL.

Positional need

The Chargers had one of the best pass rushes in the league in 2024 as their 46 sacks finished tied-for-sixth. Things may look a bit different in 2025 though. Khalil Mack had a phenomenal year but he is set to become a free agent and his future in Los Angeles is up in the air.

The same can be said for Joey Bosa, who is due for a cap hit of $36+ million in 2025. He becomes an obvious cap casualty, and that would logically have to take place in order for the Chargers to take on Garrett’s contract. There’s no doubt that the Chargers would be in need of a pass rusher and who better to go after than the 2023 AP Defensive Player of the Year.

Trajectory of franchise

Per his social media post(s), Garrett’s primary reason for the trade request was the desire to win a Super Bowl. The Browns won just one playoff game in his tenure, and things aren’t getting any better over there after a 3-14 season.

The Chargers went an impressive 11-6 this season and are a team that is trending upwards. Jim Harbaugh seems to be a coach that a lot of players would want to play for. Furthermore, this was the No. 1 defense in 2024 in its first season under coordinator Jesse Minter. Garrett would only elevate the defense even more and could turn this team into legitimate contenders.

Report: Browns could chase former MVP quarterback this offseason

NFL Insider Ian Rapoport believes the Browns will pursue Aaron Rodgers in free agency if the New York Jets quarterback is cut.

One NFL insider believes Aaron Rodgers will be in the cards for the Cleveland Browns in 2025.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport thinks the New York Jets will move on from the three-time MVP this offseason. Rapoport believes the Browns will be in pursuit if the Jets move on from the franchise quarterback as they look to bring in competition for Deshaun Watson.

Rodgers has played miserably with the New York Jets. The quarterback has seen himself more in the news than in the endzone. Rodgers has added to the dysfunction of the Jets, alienating the owners of the Jets, and his teammates. Rapoport mentioned in the same report that Jets’ receiver Garrett Wilson could request a trade if Rodgers returns to the team.

Rodgers is the perfect low-cost, high-risk high-reward option for the Browns this offseason. Rodgers may be inclined to take a short, team-friendly contract that is well under market rate, similar to Russell Wilson’s contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 41-year-old would be an excellent bridge option for the Browns.

Unlike a quarterback chosen in the draft, the Browns wouldn’t need to invest in a future with Rodgers or similar free agent options like Sam Darnold and Kirk Cousins. As key franchise pieces contemplate their future with the organization, the Browns must go for broke next season and Rodgers is their best option.

Expect the analytically driven franchise to bet big on the former MVP.

Chargers’ first injury report ahead of Week 9 vs. Browns

Check in on the health of the Chargers heading into their Week 9 matchup with the Browns

The Chargers had their first practice on Wednesday in preparation for the Week 9 game against the Browns.

Los Angeles had four non-participants: Tight end Will Dissly (shoulder), cornerback Kristian Fulton (hamstring), linebacker Denzel Perryman (toe) and tight end Stone Smartt (ankle).

Edge defender Joey Bosa (hip), wide receiver D.J. Chark (groin), WR Derius Davis (hamstring), defensive lineman Morgan Fox (groin), TE Hayden Hurst (groin), WR Quentin Johnston (ankle), EDGE Khalil Mack (non-injury related), WR Ladd McConkey (hip), WR Brenden Rice (shoulder) and CB Ja’Sir Taylor (fibula) were limited.

The Chargers are hopeful Chark and Johnston can play this weekend. Chark has yet to make his debut with the team and Johnston has missed the last two games.

Browns rule out Jack Conklin, Isaiah Thomas vs. Steelers

The Browns will be without two against the Steelers.

The Cleveland Browns will not only be without defensive end Jadeveon Clowney after his tantrum last night, but they will also miss right tackle Jack Conklin against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Fresh off of an extension, the starting right tackle went down with an ankle injury in the win against the Washington Commanders. This is more than likely a precautionary matter for the player they have under contract for at least two more seasons. Rookie defensive end Isaiah Thomas will also miss this game in Pittsburgh.

Look for James Hudson to fill in at right tackle this Sunday, Alex Wright to man the starting defensive end position across from Myles Garrett, and for Chase Winovich to get plenty of reps off the bench as they will be thin at defensive end. Cornerback Denzel Ward has been listed as questionable.

Browns send Jadeveon Clowney home, not expected to play vs. Steelers

We’ve probably seen the last of Jadeveon Clowney in a Browns uniform.

The Cleveland Browns are left to clean up a mess after defensive end Jadeveon Clowney made destructive comments to Cleveland dot com’s Mary Kay Cabot yesterday. He should not be allowed back in the facility after those comments with just one game to go, and apparently, the Browns agree.

And now, according to Tom Withers of the Associated Press, the Browns have sent Clowney home from the facility. His status against the Pittsburgh Steelers in just two days is very much clear as he is not expected to play, according to The OBR’s Brad Stainbrook, for the Browns. We have seen the last of Clowney in brown and orange.

Report: Former Browns RB in critical condition after saving his kids from drowning

Peyton Hillis has been hospitalized after a swimming accident.

Known for his 2010 campaign with the Cleveland Browns where he racked up over 1,600 yards and 13 touchdowns, Peyton Hillis landed on the cover of Madden 12 as a result. He now needs the city of Cleveland to surround him once again as he is in critical condition after saving his kids from drowning in the ocean.

According to his uncle, Hillis is trending upward, but is “still in intensive care and having some problems with his kidneys and his lungs.” We are sending Hillis nothing but positive thoughts and vibes as he fights back to full health from this horrible accident suffered.

Amari Cooper has his eyes on a career-high vs. Steelers

Amari Cooper has his eyes set on his personal goals.

The Cleveland Browns are set to close out their season against the Pittsburgh Steelers (although Jadeveon Clowney may not join them). And wide receiver Amari Cooper is just 80 yards away from hitting his personal best in career yards. Cooper was asked if reaching a new career-high in receiving yards was an important mark for him, and he did not deny it. Coming off of a two-touchdown performance against the Washington Commanders, Cooper had this to say about eclipsing his career-high in receiving yards:

“Of course. I would be lying if I said it wasn’t. Every year you want to get better because like they say, if you are not getting better, you are getting worse. You don’t work real hard in the offseason and the preseason, to get worse. Yeah, it is something that is very important to me.”

Here are other highlights from Cooper’s press availability today

Jadeveon Clowney throws haymakers: ‘95% sure I won’t be back’

Jadeveon Clowney is going out swinging

The Cleveland Browns and defensive end Jadeveon Clowney were able to re-sign to another one-year deal this past offseason after he racked up nine sacks and performed as one of their best run defenders. It does not appear that he will be back in 2023 as he has started throwing haymakers at the Browns, the defensive staff, and even his teammate Myles Garrett in an interview with Cleveland dot com’s Mary Kay Cabot.

In this article, Clowney has stated that he is “95% sure I won’t be back” with the Browns in 2023, among other juicy quotes about the team he currently plays for. Here are some other quotes from Clowney’s interview with Cabot that stood out as well.

ST Coordinator Mike Priefer: ‘I don’t plan on going anywhere else’

“I love it here. I am under contract. I don’t plan on going anywhere else. I am from Cleveland. I want to help Cleveland win a world championship. That is why I am here, and that is my focus.”

We are entering the last week of the season, and coordinators for the Cleveland Browns are starting to get questions about their future with the team. First, it was defensive coordinator Joe Woods who closed his last presser of the year by saying he hoped to speak to the media again. Special teams coordinator Mike Priefer was also asked if there was any uncertainty surrounding his job.

“No. I love it here. I am under contract. I don’t plan on going anywhere else. I am from Cleveland. I want to help Cleveland win a world championship. That is why I am here, and that is my focus.”

It is not necessarily up to Priefer whether or not he stays, so it will be an interesting week after the Browns play the Pittsburgh Steelers, to say the least.
