Is Clemson up or down in new USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll?

Clemson Baseball: Here’s a look at where the Clemson Tigers are ranked in this week’s USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll for the week of April 29.

Coach Erik Bakich’s Clemson Tigers are coming off a 2-2 week that included tough losses at No. 18 Georgia and at unranked Louisville.

Where do those two losses leave the Tigers in the new USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll? The same spot as last week, it turns out.

Clemson (34-9 overall) stayed at No. 4 in the new coaches poll, released Monday, April 29. It’s the same ranking the team holds in Baseball America’s new Top 25 and D1Baseball’s new poll. The Tigers moved up one spot in D1Baseball’s poll this week from No. 5.

The top four of the coaches poll, compiled by 31 head coaches at Division I schools, remained the same as last week. For the third consecutive week, Texas A&M (38-6 overall) stayed at No. 1, Arkansas (37-7) held at No. 2, and Tennessee (37-7) remained at No. 3.

The only change in the top five was at No. 5, where East Carolina (35-8) jumped two spots after outscoring Memphis 36-6 over the weekend in a three-game sweep in the American Athletic Conference. East Carolina leads the AAC standings by two games over UTSA.

Other ACC schools ranked in the top 10 of this week’s coaches poll are No. 6 Florida State, No. 9 Duke, and No. 10 Virginia. The ACC has seven total teams ranked in the Top 25, which also includes No. 12 North Carolina, No. 15 Wake Forest, and No. 20 NC State.

The SEC has the most schools ranked of any conference with nine.

To that end, some big movers in this week’s coaches poll are South Carolina, which jumped seven spots to No. 14 after taking two of three from previously fifth-ranked Kentucky. Mississippi State also jumped seven spots to go from unranked last week to No. 21 this week following a clutch series win at Vanderbilt, which had been ranked No. 8.

Oklahoma State roses six spots to No. 16 after a 4-0 week that included a sweep of BYU in the Big 12. The Cowboys’ bats awoke for 40 runs in the three games against BYU.

Vanderbilt and Oklahoma saw the furthest drops among ranked teams this week. The Commodores slid five spots to No. 13 while the Sooners fell five spots to land at No. 23.

Clemson is back in action Friday when the Tigers welcome Georgia Tech to Doug Kingsmore Stadium in ACC play.

The Tigers stayed at No. 4 in Baseball America’s new 25 rankings.

Texas A&M (38-6 overall) remained No. 1 in both polls for the third consecutive week after a hard-fought series win over Georgia, which checked in at No. 19 in D1Baseball’s poll.

The top three remained the same in D1Baseball’s rankings with Arkansas (37-7) staying at No. 2 and Tennessee (37-7) holding at No. 3. East Carolina (35-8) moved up two spots to No. 5 in D1Baseball’s poll after a 4-0 week.

In Baseball America’s rankings, the top four remained the same. Florida State (34-9) moved up one spot to No. 5 after a strong 3-1 week that saw the Seminoles take two of three at previously fifth-ranked Duke. The Blue Devils (30-14) fell three spots in Baseball America rankings to land at No. 8, and four spots in D1Baseball’s poll to No. 10.

Elsewhere in the ACC, North Carolina (33-11) climbed five spots to No. 7 in Baseball America’s rankings after winning two of three against Virginia Tech. The Tar Heels rose three spots to No. 12 in D1Baseball’s poll.

Other ACC schools in this week’s Baseball America and D1Baseball rankings are Virginia (No. 10/11), Wake Forest (No. 13/15) and NC State (No. 13/20).

Clemson is idle in midweek play before returning to the diamond Friday when the Tigers welcome Georgia Tech to Doug Kingsmore Stadium for their next ACC series. Friday’s first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. EDT. The series can be seen on ACC Network Extra (ACCNX).

WATCH: Erik Bakich, Clemson players talk wild win over Louisville

Clemson Tigers Baseball: Hear from Clemson coach Erik Bakich, center fielder Cam Cannarella and reliever Matthew Marchal after the Tigers’ thrilling 12-11 victory over Louisville in ACC play Friday.

Clemson coach Erik Bakich called it “our epic meltdown… followed up by another epic comeback.”

Whatever you want to call it, the fourth-ranked Tigers found another way to rally for a wild victory in ACC play when they scored four ninth-inning runs to cap a thrilling 12-11 series-opening victory over Louisville on Friday night at Jim Patterson Stadium.

Clemson (33-8 overall, 14-5 ACC) allowed 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Cardinals built an 11-4 lead.

The Tigers slowly began to chip away by adding two runs in the fifth and single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to pull to within three at 11-8.

Then the bats erupted for four runs in the ninth inning, capped by a two-out, go-ahead double from Cam Cannarella to push the eventual winning run across for the latest in a string of wild finishes for the Tigers this season.

After Friday’s series opener, Bakich, Cannarella, and reliever Matthew Marchal spoke briefly about the Tigers’ (latest) improbable come-from-behind victory. Here’s everything they said.

Four-run ninth inning gives No. 4 Clemson wild series-opening win at Louisville

Series Preview and How to Watch/Stream/Listen: No. 4 Clemson at Louisville

Clemson Tigers Baseball: A series preview, plus how Clemson fans can watch, stream and listen to the Tigers’ weekend series at Louisville.

With four weekends left in the regular season, Clemson heads to Louisville with the hope of continuing its dominant tear through the ACC.

The Tigers (32-8 overall, 13-5 ACC) are ranked No. 4 in the latest USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll and are also No. 4 in the NCAA’s RPI rankings.

Coach Erik Bakich’s team has lost only one series in conference play — two weeks earlier against NC State — and has a chance to secure a top five national seed for the 2024 NCAA Division 1 Baseball Tournament over the course of the next month.

Clemson enters the weekend as the No. 3 overall seed in the latest Field of 64 projections from both D1Baseball and Baseball America. In keeping with this week’s Top 25 polls, only No. 1 Texas A&M and No. 2 Arkansas have higher projected seeds than Clemson.

The Tigers will try to keep rolling against a Louisville team that’s 24-16 overall and 9-9 in conference play, good for fifth in the ACC. The Cardinals’ .325 average as a club is the third highest tally in the league behind only Virginia (.347) and Florida State (.328). Louisville’s 6.16 ERA is 10th out of the 14 ACC baseball programs.

Shortstop Gavin Kilen has a .368/.402/.651 slash line, including seven home runs and 30 RBIs. Zion Rose (.391/.460/.591) has played in 29 games and is the team’s top hitter for average.

Coach Dan McDonnell’s team won two of three in its last weekend series against Miami. Two weeks before that, they swept then-No. 19 NC State in a weekend series. Those have been the only ACC series victories by the Cardinals this season.

Most recently, Louisville tallied 13 runs in the first inning of a 16-5 win over Western Kentucky in midweek play Tuesday. The Cardinals are averaging 8.7 runs per game.

Clemson is coming off a grueling, 15-inning loss at No. 17 Georgia on Tuesday. The Tigers won two of three in their ACC series against Pitt last week.

Clemson will start left-handers Tristan Smith and Ethan Darden on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Louisville will counter with Sebastian Gongora (4-3, 5.23) Friday and Ryan Webster (3-1, 3.23) Saturday.

Sunday’s probable starters have yet to be announced for either team.

The Tigers’ .286 average as a team ranks ninth in the ACC. Clemson leads the conference in pitching with a combined 3.83 ERA.

Second baseman Blake Wright is the only Clemson player to have started all 40 games this season. The senior from Clearwater, Fla. has a .322/.355/.655 slash line with a team-best 16 home runs and 52 RBIs.

Catcher Jimmy Obertop (.290/.450/.623) has 14 home runs to go with 31 driven in. Obertop had five home runs in two games in the Tigers’ series victory over Pitt.

Clemson is averaging 7.7 runs per game this season.

ATHENS, GA. – Paul Toetz scored on a wild pitch with one out in the 15th inning in No. 17 Georgia’s 4-3 win over No. 4 Clemson at Foley Field on Tuesday night. In a game that lasted five hours and 30 minutes, the Bulldogs improved to 30-10, while the Tigers dropped to 32-8.

The Bulldogs scored an unearned run in the second inning on Toetz’s two-out single, then Blake Wright extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a two-out, two-run triple in the third inning. Cannarella led off the fourth inning with his seventh homer of the year.

In the seventh inning, Corey Collins hit a run-scoring single to cut Clemson’s lead in half, then Collins blooped a one-out single in the ninth inning to tie the score. Alden Mathes’ throw to the plate on the play retired Charlie Condon to extend the game.
