Uiagalelei starts strong as Clemson leads Furman

Uiagalelei’s strong start sets up a Clemson touchdown.

Clemson scored on their first drive Saturday against Furman in a much needed strong start for the Tigers.

Starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei looked very comfortable under center to start the game, marching the Tigers downfield on a seven-play, 75-yard drive with Will Shipley capping off the drive with a one-yard touchdown run.

The junior quarterback was 3-3 on the drive with 67-yards connecting on a deep ball to wide receiver Beaux Collins for a 40-yard play on his second pass of the game. Moments after, he found wide receiver Joseph Ngata for a 26-yard pitch and catch that set up the Shipley score.

The Tigers lead the Paladins 7-0 with 11:46 left in the first quarter.

Furman is coming off a 52-0 blowout win over North Greenville, they will have a tough test this week when they hit the road and travel to Clemson. Meanwhile, the Tigers are coming off their own blowout win over Georgia Tech with a 41-10 victory.

The two Clemson units that need to show up the most against Furman

These two Clemson units need to have big performances against Furman.

Heading into its Week 2 matchup against Furman at Death Valley, two groups on the Clemson offense need to show up and perform.

The offensive line and the wide receivers need to have strong performances.

Of everything I watched from the Tigers’ Week 1 win over Georgia Tech, it was these two groups I walked away wanting to see more from. While many people are putting a great deal of blame of the early offensive struggles on starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, it isn’t necessarily warranted. At least not to the extent I’ve seen.

Uiagalelei definitely struggled early, but neither of these units did him any favors. As DJ started getting things going, the offensive line still seemed to struggle to win the battle up front, while the wide receivers failed to make many plays for their quarterback.

There were quite a few passes from Uiagalalei where I couldn’t help but think, “wow, what a beautiful ball”, that fell incomplete as a receiver failed to make a play on the ball. On the running side of things, Shipley, Pace and Mafah struggled to find any holes as the offensive line failed to supply them.

I’m not here to defend DJ because I expect more from him, just like everyone else. I think people need to take a step back and acknowledge the issue is deeper than just one player because he plays the most important position on the field.

Why Furman Will Win

The Paladins got their fun out of the way in the opener with a 52-0 whacking of North Greenville. The defense got into the scoring act, the quarterbacks were sharp, and now it all has to come together fast against a Clemson team coming off a short week.

Furman has to take advantage of any and every opportunity. It starts with forcing the Tiger offense to continue to try dinking and dunking, holding up against the run is a must, and controlling the clock as much as possible would be nice.

Be patient. This Tiger defense isn’t going to allow much, but a few moments will be there. This offense is good enough to take advantage of the opportunities.

Why Clemson Will Win

The defense will take care of everything. Now the offense has to open it up more.

DJ Uiagalelei wasn’t sharp, but his receivers didn’t give him any semblance of help – there were too many passes that hit the targets in the hands and dropped.

The team ended up winning easily in the 41-10 opener against Georgia Tech, but the defense made sure there weren’t any issues. This is the game for Uiagalelei to silence the critics – at least for a week – or else …

What’s Going To Happen

Cole Klubnik. The announcing team for the Georgia Tech game, and most of social media, couldn’t bench Uiagalelei fast enough for the superstar freshman prospect. Klubnik came in late against the backups, rolled to a quick scoring drive, and now there’s a real controversy.

Both quarterbacks will shine in this, but once again, it’ll be the Clemson defense that’s the star.

Five Clemson players to keep an eye on against Furman

Clemson takes on Furman on Saturday, and there are a handful of players fans should keep an eye on when they take the field.

Coming off a 31-point victory last week, Clemson will play Furman on Saturday in hopes of moving to 2-0 on the season.

While the Tigers’ margin of victory was large in week one, the final score didn’t tell the whole story, and there are certainly some areas that Clemson will need to build upon this week.

Saturday’s game will also serve as Clemson’s first home game in Memorial Stadium, allowing 80,000 fans to watch individual players with their own eyes.

With just five days separating the two contests, the Tigers will be operating off of the quickest game turnaround since 2016 when the Tigers faced Georgia Tech on a Tuesday following a Saturday game against South Carolina State.

Clemson’s defense showed glimpses of dominance in Monday’s opening win, but the Tigers will need to continue bringing the pressure ahead of Saturday’s matchup.
