Cowboys 53-man roster, elevation-eligible players vs Panthers in Week 11

A look at the Cowboys’ roster for Week 11, who is on the practice squad and how many call-ups remain, plus an update for guys on IR.

Two players have fallen out of our tracker, as the team announced that neither LB Leighton Vander Esch nor ST CJ Goodwin would be returning to the club this season. Both are significant losses for the Dallas Cowboys, but not ones they aren’t familiar with coping from for the 2023 year. Each had already spent the requisite amount of time on IR to be eligible for return if healthy, four weeks.

Now, the team is admitting they will go the rest of the way without them. That reduced the number of players on the 53-man roster who could have their 21-day practice window opened down to two, and one of those guys is taking advantage. TE Peyton Hendershot returned to practice on Wednesday and looks like he will be reinstated to the big roster before this weekend’s contest against Carolina. Here’s a look at the complete roster, along with the practice squad and IR list.

55-man roster, Week 6 elevations reveals 6 different Cowboys moves

A look at the Cowboys’ roster they’ll choose from for the Week 6 battle against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Dallas Cowboys made an acquisition this week, moved a player to IR and yet somehow they didn’t do much of what was expected. It appeared, in their embarrassing loss to the San Francisco 49ers, they lost three key players to injury for a lengthy period of time. Yet when looking at the injury report and transactions for the week, things didn’t unfold as expected. Until gameday.

Leighton Vander Esch and CJ Goodwin were ruled out of this game on Saturday, yet they stayed on the 53-man roster until moving to IR on Monday. The IR move of the early week went to TE Peyton Hendershot, who missed last week’s game after a mid-week ankle injury. His spot on the roster was taken by veteran Sean McKeon. WR Kavontae Turpin was though to be seriously injured, but he was a full participant by the end of the week and carries no game designation.

The club added a linebacker to the practice squad during the week, but Rashaan Evans isn’t ready to suit up and wasn’t one of the game-day elevations on Monday to face off against the Los Angeles Chargers. Instead, the club elevated a running back and a different linebacker, bringing up Malik Davis and Malik Jefferson.

After finally moving Vander Esch and Goodwin to IR, the club promoted UDFA rookie edge Tyrus Wheat and activated cornerback Nahshon Wright from IR. Here’s a full accounting of the club’s 55-man roster before inactives are announced.

Cowboys WR Kavontae Turpin ruled out of game with ankle injury

The Cowboys WR will miss the rest of the game after scoring the club’s first TD.

The lone wideout to have an impact in the first half will not be available for the Dallas Cowboys in the second half. Second-year pro Kavontae Turpin scored Dallas’ lone points in the first half, catching a pass from Dak Prescott for 26 yards to close the gap. However later in the second quarter, Turpin had his ankle landed on out of bounds.

Melissa Stark of NBC Sports reported on the broadcast that he would not return. This is a double blow for Dallas as Turpin is the team’s returner on both punts and kickoffs. Also reported was that special teams ace CJ Goodwin suffered a shoulder injury and his return is questionable.

6 Cowboys who could be shocking cuts before the 2022 regular season

Sometimes it’s about who’s better. But sometimes there are other factors at play when it comes to the initial 53-man roster. @KDDrummondNFL looks at a few names that would raise an eyebrow if let go.

The Dallas Cowboys may not be as deep as they have been in years past, but that doesn’t mean they will have an easier time when it comes to putting together their 53-man roster. There are still decisions to make for Stephen Jones, Will McClay and head coach Mike McCarthy that include talent, but go beyond who the best player is right now (or in three weeks).

In addition to who offers the best performance, the team will be looking to ensure they don’t say goodbye to potential they want to continue harnessing. Beyond that there is the injury factor for guys the club may look to bring back during the season, and the rules to which those maneuvers can happen. Mixed all together and there could be some interesting decisions made come August 30. Here’s a look at six players who could be on the outside looking in at the initial 53-man roster.

Cowboys Roster Moves: 4 players waived as 2 others sign deals

The Cowboys signed two players, including C.J. Goodwin, and the club waived another four players.

The Dallas Cowboys have made a number of moves in free agency, most of which have flown under the radar. That trend continued on Friday, as the club completed another six roster transactions.

According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys officially signed CB C.J. Goodwin, and re-signed WR Malik Turner. WR Chris Lacy, TE Cole Hikutini, C Marcus Henry, and WR Jon’Vea Johnson were all waived.

It’s easy to see why the Cowboys brought back Goodwin, as he was the clubs best special teams player in 2020 and John Fassel hopes to continue improving the special teams unit. This deal was reported earlier in the week but finalized today, and Goodwin returns to Dallas for just $3.5 million over the next two seasons.

Turner was a restricted free agent, but didn’t receive a tender from the Cowboys, meaning he would hit the open market. However, Turner has returned to the roster just days later.

Hikutini was the odd man out in a crowded TE room that features Dalton Schultz, Sean McKeon, and a returning Blake Jarwin.

Henry spent the majority of time of the Dallas practice squad a season ago, and could find his way back there should he go unclaimed.

The Cowboys filled out their wide receiver depth by re-signing Noah Brown, Cedrick Wilson, and the aforementioned Turner, making Lacy and Johnson more expendable.

Cowboys mix it up, 3 new captains for Week 2 vs Falcons includes WR Michael Gallup

The Dallas Cowboys continue to mix up the pre-game honor.

Head coach Mike McCarthy said that he didn’t want to name season-long captains earlier in the offseason. Under previous head coach Jason Garrett, the Dallas Cowboys would go into each season with five or six different captains, mostly related to longevity and tenure. That isn’t the case with the new Cowboys.

After selecting three captains for the season opener, Dallas has a brand new set of captains for Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons. WR Michael Gallup, DE DeMarcus Lawrence and special teamer CB C.J. Goodwin.

Last week quarterback Dak Prescott, linebacker Jaylon Smith and long snapper L.P. Ladouceur will done the captain’s C on their jerseys.
