Bills release Marquez Stevenson to make room for Cole Beasley

#Bills release Marquez Stevenson to make room for Cole Beasley:

In a surprise, Cole Beasley has returned to the Buffalo Bills.

On Tuesday, the team announced that Beasley was added to the practice squad and it’s expected that he could be called up to the active roster pretty quickly.

However, the Bills (10-3) had to make room for that transaction. The corresponding move came in the form of Marquez Stevenson as the team announced he had been released from their practice squad.

Stevenson has had a journey in recent weeks with the team.

Last week, Buffalo released him. He was let go on the same day his 21-day injured reserve window ended. The Bills previously designated Stevenson to return from IR and had to make a choice and decided to release him in hopes they could get him back on their practice squad.

That exact scenario unfolded… and the Bills eventually ended up letting Stevenson go anyway to make room for Beasley.

Stevenson, a 2021 sixth-round draft pick, had foot surgery in August after a training camp injury. His release turns some heads because Buffalo also has the likes of KeeSean Johnson and Tanner Gentry on their practice squad–Both wideouts.

The Bills still opted to release a former draft pick over them. Perhaps Stevenson had not yet progressed from his injury as the team had hoped.

In addition to the creative receiver moves, Buffalo made a switch at defensive tackle. Brandin Bryant, who was previously with the Bills and signed by Houston this season was released by the Texans last week. Bryant has since signed to Buffalo’s roster and CJ Brewer was released to make room for him.

Bills sign CJ Brewer from practice squad after injury vs. Patriots

#Bills sign CJ Brewer from practice squad after a different player was injured vs. the #Patriots:

The Buffalo Bills made a minor transaction on Monday on the surface.

Beneath it, the move could hold some weight.

The Bills (9-3) have announced that the team signed defensive tackle CJ Brewer to the 53-man roster from the practice squad.

In a corresponding move, defensive tackle Cortez Broughton takes Brewer’s spot on the practice squad.

It’s not set in stone, but the transaction involving Brewer could be bad news for defensive tackle Jordan Phillips.

On one of the very last plays New England ran on offense in the Bills’ 24-10 win over them in Week 13, Patriots quarterback Mac Jones was scrambling all around on the field. Phillips was chasing and took a dive at him and missed.

Soon after, the Bills announced that Phillips was out due to a shoulder injury.

Considering there were only minutes left in what was a game that was all but over, Phillips being ruled out was not a surprise.

After, Phillips said he was fine. But with the Brewer news, Phillips might not be. That is nothing concrete, but it is something to keep in mind throughout the week.

Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott will unlikely say if Phillips is out on Sunday against the New York Jets (7-5) at any point in the coming days. Stay tuned to the injury reports, though. That will reveal if Phillips practices. Check back at Bills Wire for that information starting on Wednesday.

Bills sign John Brown, CJ Brewer to practice squad

#Bills sign John Brown, CJ Brewer to practice squad:

The Buffalo Bills have signed a few familiar pieces to their practice squad on Saturday.

The team announced that defensive tackle CJ Brewer and a blast from the past, receiver John Brown, have been added to the taxi squad.

Brown, 32, previously played in Buffalo from 2019 to 2020. Prior to 2021, he was released in a salary cap move. Last season, he spent time on multiple practice squads around the NFL. He has not played this year.

Brown also seemed a bit discontent when Buffalo let him go in 2020. He said via SiriusXM that he felt like he was not “given a heads-up.”

Evidently, it’s all water under the bridge now.

Injuries factored into Brown’s decline in 2020, but that same thing is something the Bills are battling in their receiver room now.

The Bills have just four healthy receivers on their 53-man roster (Stefon Diggs, Gabe Davis, Isaiah McKenzie and Khalil Shakir). Buffalo has already elevated Tanner Gentry to the main roster twice in the past two weeks.

Brewer, 25, was on the Bills’ practice squad just earlier this season. He was elevated from it twice and played for Buffalo on both occasions. Brewer recorded two tackles for the Bills.
