Cincinnati Bengals officially sign WR Jermaine Burton, contract details revealed

Former Alabama wide receiver Jermaine Burton has officially signed with the Cincinnati Bengals!

Former Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver Jermaine Burton joined the program during the 2022 offseason via the transfer portal after spending two seasons with the Georgia Bulldogs. Now, he is officially a member of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Burton was selected in the third round, No. 80 overall, of the 2024 NFL draft by the Bengals. He now joins former SEC foe, quarterback Joe Burrow, who was at the center of the LSU Tigers‘ success in 2019.

Today, the NFL franchise’s social media page shared the news that Burton was officially under contract. According to Spotrac, his deal is worth just over $5.8 million over the next four years with a signing bonus of roughly $1 million.

Burton had a career season in 2023, reeling in 39 passes for 798 yards and eight touchdowns.

Bengals rookie WR Jermaine Burton receives national hype

Some national hype for buzzworthy Bengals rookie Jermaine Burton.

Cincinnati Bengals rookie wide receiver Jermaine Burton isn’t only receiving hype from the team’s fanbase.

Burton’s going national — and quickly.

The latest example comes from Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer:

• Jermaine Burton is a name I’d keep an eye on. There were some off-field questions teams sorted through, but also a lot of talent to work with there. And that he landed with Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals gives him a great chance to make it. Already in limited work, Cincinnati’s seen a competitive kid who has good ball skills and the explosiveness to separate from coverage in the NFL.

Burton has impressed quickly in the way he’s handled questions about those concerns. On the field he’s done the same, making big plays with Joe Burrow already.

Breer’s assessment is another nod toward the fact the third-rounder might be able to break into the three-wideout sets with Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins at some point next season — if not right away in Week 1.

Bengals’ Amarius Mims getting 1st-team reps early in spring practices

Some important reps for the Bengals’ first-round pick.

The Cincinnati Bengals have given first-round pick Amarius Mims some run as the first-team right tackle this week during voluntary work.

This onlookers could glean from the practice footage making the rounds on social media. Mims slotting in and getting the reps is a byproduct of free-agent signee Trent Brown not working at voluntaries.

Even so, the reps — against air or otherwise — are nice chances for the high-upside product to apply some of what he’s already learned from Orlando Brown Jr. and others. The team would seem to agree, giving him the reps over the likes of Jackson Carman and D’Ante Smith.

It also speaks to the chance that Mims could make this a competition at right tackle over the summer. And even if he doesn’t, the reps could come in handy later in the season for an offensive line that has had a hard time staying healthy for 17 games.

NFL schedule release: Bengals avoid international game in 2024

The Bengals won’t travel overseas next season.

The Cincinnati Bengals noted last month that the organization was bracing for an international game soon.

But it won’t be in 2024.

Ahead of the full NFL schedule release, the league peeled back the proverbial curtain on all of the international games this season and the Bengals simply aren’t there.

The Bengals were a candidate to play in Munich, Germany on the 2024 schedule, but the Carolina Panthers will instead “host” the New York Giants in that slot.

Of course, the Bengals missing now doesn’t impact future chances to go international — given the attraction that Joe Burrow and Co. are and their status as contenders, it’s probably going to happen sooner than later.

As of this writing, the only confirmed game for the Bengals is a Week 2 trip to Kansas City to play the Chiefs, though we do know the entire slate of opponents they will face.

Bengals say thank you to Tyler Boyd

A goodbye to Tyler Boyd.

The Cincinnati Bengals have officially moved on from wide receiver Tyler Boyd now that he has signed with the Tennessee Titans to reunite with his former offensive coordinator Brian Callahan.

The Bengals official Twitter account posted a video thanking Boyd for everything he did while he was in Cincinnati with a simple message.

“Thank you for everything, TB,” the tweet read.

It’s a well-deserved send-off for Boyd, who spent the first eight years of his career with the team, amassing 513 receptions for exactly 6,000 yards and 31 touchdowns.

He stuck with the Bengals through the down years while they were building the AFC powerhouse that they have become today and through a coaching transition.

Boyd will be remembered fondly by Bengals fans.

Bengals will need to stop the slow starts to overcome Chiefs in Week 2

The Bengals won’t have long to figure things out before they play the Chiefs next season.

The Cincinnati Bengals will need to avoid the slow start in 2024 that has hampered the team’s past few seasons.

This was an obvious change for the team, yet it was amplified all the more on Tuesday when the NFL revealed that the Bengals would visit the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2.

Which is to say that the slow-starting issues could have massive AFC implications within the first two weeks of the season.

The Bengals have started the last two seasons 0-2. They had that memorable 10 straight wins in 2022 before losing to the Chiefs in the AFC title game. But they also had last year, where Burrow’s calf injury over the summer played a big role in the 0-2 start, 3-3 mark by the bye and 5-6 record by December.

Considering Burrow has talked differently about his pushing through pain this time, there’s certainly hope this is a normal summer for the star passer — but the NFL is certainly hedging its bets by putting Bengals vs. Chiefs early in the season.

An x-factor when wondering if the Bengals can overcome the slow starts and shock the Chiefs in Week 2 is the idea the offense plans to look quite a bit different in 2024. More of Mike Gesicki in the slot, a fresh running back room, more under-center looks and other factors might just provide the juice and surprise necessary to steal a win in Arrowhead.

Either way, we’ll know whether the slow start is real quickly given the Week 2 showdown.

Bengals announce rookie deals with Jermaine Burton, Erick All

The Bengals have nearly signed their entire 2024 draft class.

The Cincinnati Bengals got two more draft picks under contract on Tuesday.

This time, the team announced that third-rounder Jermaine Burton and fourth-rounder Erick All had put ink to paper.

Burton, the hyped wide receiver, has already had some notable highlights in practice while working with Joe Burrow. The Bengals also happen to think they got a steal with TE 1 upside in All.

The Bengals now have eight of 10 draft picks under contract:

  • DT McKinnley Jackson
  • CB Josh Newton
  • TE Tanner McLachlan
  • S Daijahn Anthony
  • C Matt Lee
  • WR Jermaine Burton
  • TE Erick All
  • DE Cedric Johnson

That leaves first-rounder Amarius Mims and second-rounder Kris Jenkins as the only rookies yet to sign with the team, though both have been in the building.

Watch: Joe Burrow’s wrist looks fine as he throws deep passes in practice

The latest Joe Burrow highlights sure suggest his wrist is just fine.

The practice highlights just keep coming for Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow.

Ditto for hyped rookie wide receiver Jermaine Burton.

Tuesday, the two linked up again on what appeared to be a roughly 60-yard bomb to Burton. That’s a big deal again because of the outside, understandable questions about the surgically repaired wrist after last year’s season-ending injury.

In fact, Tuesday’s brief set of highlights includes a slow-mo look at Burrow’s throwing motion, too. All together, the clips certainly suggest things are just fine for the star quarterback.

While Burrow has admitted that some days would be better than others, things very much remain on the expected schedule for his comeback.

A look at the highlights:

Trey Hendrickson breaks silence at Bengals practice after trade request

Bengals DE Trey Hendrickson speaks up.

Monday, Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson popped up on the team’s social media feed that showcased practice highlights.

That struck some as odd, considering Hendrickson’s very strategically timed trade request near the 2024 NFL draft due to dissatisfaction with his pay and length of contract.

But it turns out Hendrickson has been around the team this entire time despite the business side of things.

As detailed by Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com, Hendrickson has been in Cincinnati working out like any normal offseason.

And the star defender says there’s been a balance he needs to strike between the business side and how he can best help the team: “This is where separating business and the team is difficult. At what point am I contradicting what I want? Long-term, winning games, all those things are what I want to do here in Cincinnati and removing myself from the team doesn’t help the team.”

The long-term team goal for Hendrickson sounds like it remains the same and he even tells Hobson that the front office continues to be “transparent and respectful” to him.

“My mindset is to win a Super Bowl and I think we’ve got the quarterback and the pieces to do it,” Hendrickson said. “I want to be here a long time. I want to win football games and I want to bring a Super Bowl to Cincinnati.”

These developments don’t mean player or front office have shifted positions on things or made significant progress. As always, it’s worth pointing out that Hendrickson inked a one-year extension with a pay bump last offseason — yet also remains underpaid compared to his production.

It’s a tricky situation, clearly, but the star defender’s approach so far would indicate that this summer won’t feature a holdout or drama.
