Ohio State basketball to play in charity game for mental health awareness

This should be a fun and worthy event. #GoBucks

On October 18, the Ohio State basketball team will take the hour-and-a-half-long drive down to Cincinnati to take on the Cincinnati Bearcats.

The game won’t be on the Buckeyes permanent record, but it could certainly help make a difference in the lives of many. Cincinnati is hosting the charity exhibition game at Fifth Third Arena.

It will be sponsored by CareSource which is hoping to raise money for mental health awareness. Cincinnati head coach Wes Miller spoke on the game and appears excited to have Ohio State in town.

“We are thrilled to participate in this exhibition with Ohio State and raise awareness for mental health initiatives,” Miller said.

The Buckeyes, who are fresh off landing a local 2026 prospect in Alex Smith, will have their season start in Las Vegas against the Texas Longhorns on November 4, so this will be a nice tune-up activity before the real deal gets underway. The Buckeyes first home game is November 11 against Youngstown State.

Ohio State finished 22-14 last season and were 8-3 under Jake Diebler, who took over for Chris Holtmann midway through the season. It has a slew of high-profile transfers like Aaron Bradshaw as well, so it should be a fun roster to watch this season.

Former UNC guard Wes Miller has Cincinnati as a ‘team to monitor’ on recruiting trail

Former UNC basketball guard Wes Miller has Cincinnati as a ‘team to monitor’ on the recruiting trail when it comes to the class of 2024.

With the regular season winding down in both high school and college, it’s now time to look ahead to the summer when AAU will be in full swing … and so will college commitments. While the UNC basketball program already has a firm outlook on their 2024 class, there are a lot of programs that are still looking for their first commitment.

For Cincinnati and former UNC guard Wes Miller, both 2023 and 2024 are critical classes in order to get the Bearcats back to the NCAA Tournament.

Rivals national recruiting director Rob Cassidy had some good things to say about Miller and Cincinnati in regards to their potential on the recruiting trail.

“This might be a bit of an under-the-radar pick, but Cincinnati is trending in the right direction on the trail. So while the Bearcats may miss the NCAA Tournament this year, they did some nice things in the 2023 cycle and seem primed to build on that with the 2024 class. Of course, it all starts with No. 2 overall prospect Flory Bidunga, for whom the Bearcats have emerged as a serious player. If Wes Miller and his staff can get the prolific rim-protector in the fold other elite prospects might be inclined to hop in the boat as well. The next two seasons are shaping up to be big ones for Miller, who has steadily improved the team since taking over prior to last year. It seems as though the second-year head coach is trending toward stockpiling enough talent to compete in a loaded Big 12.”

For 2023, Cincinnati has the No. 35 overall class with two four-star guards. In 2024, the Bearcats are involved in a few big time recruitments.
With the move to the Big 12 coming, Miller needs to continue to build up the roster in order to compete with some of the top teams in the country every single night.
For now, he has the Bearcats trending in the right direction.

Son of NFL Hall of Fame RB Edgerrin James commits to Cincinnati for basketball

The son of NFL Hall of Fame running back Edgerrin James has committed to Cinncinati’s basketball program.

The Cincinnati Bearcats have landed a commitment from Jizzle James, one of the top guards in the class of 2023, according to 247 Sports.

James (6-foot-1, 180 pounds) is a four-star point guard for Olympia (Fla.). He’s ranked No. 9 at his position and No. 53 nationally by his composite score.

Last season as a sophomore James filled out the stat sheet, averaging 14.8 points per game, 3.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.9 steals while shooting 46% from the field, 35% from three-point range and 72% from the foul line.

Cincinnati won out over seven other schools with offers on the table, including Georgetown, NC State and Florida. The addition bumped the Bearcats up in On3’s 2023 recruiting class rankings to No. 27, just a fraction behind Kansas State, Providence and Louisville.

James is the son of Edgerrin James, who played running back for 11 years in the NFL, primarily with the Indianapolis Colts. James also played a few years for the Arizona Cardinals and his final season with the Seattle Seahawks. Altogether, He made four Pro Bowl teams and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2020.

Cincinnati vs East Carolina Game Preview, American Athletic Conference Tournament

Why Cincinnati Will Win

The Bearcats were able to get by East Carolina twice even though it didn’t shoot all that well and didn’t own the boards.

No one in the AAC shoots more threes, but it’s the defense that usually gets the job done … usually.

Cincinnati has lost five straight and seven of the last eight games and nine of the last 13. East Carolina might be playing better than the Bearcats lately, but it’s not shooting well and doesn’t have the offensive pop to keep up if Cincinnati is on from the outside.

ECU has scored 70 or more once since mid-January, it’s lousy at stopping teams from three, and …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why East Carolina Will Win

Cincinnati has been awful over the last month.

There have been a few bright spots, but the team just can’t shoot. It’s been a minor miracle when it hits 40% from the field. Even though it beat the Pirates when making 35% of its shots, it’s still been brutally cold as it’s become one of the worst shooting teams in college basketball.

East Carolina at least moves the ball around a little bit better and is a bit better on the free throw line. In a game between two teams that can’t shoot a lick, every point will be gold.

Cincinnati vs East Carolina: What’s Going To Happen

Avert your eyes from the shooting here.

They both average just over 40% from the field on the year, but it’s been a painful grind for either one to hit shots on a consistent basis.

On the plus side, these two are about dead even in terms of production. Cincinnati might be playing far worse than East Carolina is at the moment, but the defense has been slightly stronger.

However, East Carolina will shoot just a wee bit better.

Cincinnati vs Houston Game Preview

Why Cincinnati Will Win

It’s been a rough run lately with five losses in the last six games, but the defense continues to be solid, the offense is moving the ball around well, and no one in the American Athletic Conference shoots more threes.

It’s going to bomb away. It’s just a question of whether or not a few more shots go in.

The Bearcats only hit four of their 20 threes in the 80-58 loss to Houston back in early February, but that was one of their worst shooting days of the year.

Cincinnati has to somehow keep this close, hit a few more threes to put the pressure on, and get Houston to the free throw line. The Cougars only hit 66% on the line.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Houston Will Win

Cincinnati hasn’t exactly caught fire offensively since that loss to the Cougars.

Again, its defense is okay, but the shooting has been a disaster from the outside. The O has failed to get past 25% from three in four of the last five games and in seven of the last ten.

Houston isn’t lighting it up outside, either, but it’s making up for it with a whole lot points on the move and a ton of assists and good passes for easy points.

How well are the Cougars moving the ball? They have 20 assists in each of the last two games and lead the AAC overall.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Houston is playing better and better at just the right time, and Cincinnati has picked the wrong time to hit a rough patch. Neither trend will stop here.

The Cougars will hit more threes than they did in the first meeting, but they won’t be consistent enough from the inside and won’t be able to match a few quick Houston runs.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Houston vs Cincinnati Game Preview

Why Houston Will Win

Cincinnati doesn’t shoot well enough or consistently enough from the field.

It’ll jack up a ton of threes, but they aren’t going in lately hating just 13-of-60 over the last two games, and they’re struggling overall from the field averaging under 40%.

It was able to get away with that against a few mediocre teams, but that’s not going to work against the Cougars.

Houston is second in the nation in securing defense, it’s about to come up with few key takeaways here and there, and it’ll do a far better job of getting on the move and overcoming its own shooting woes.

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Cincinnati Will Win

The Bearcats can play a little bit of D, too.

How are they getting past their relative shooting woes? They’re coming up with a whole bunch of defensive stops, allowing teams to hit around 25% from three over the lsat few games and with no one hitting 40% overall from the field since mid-January.

Houston will get to 40% at least – it’ll get to the rim enough to get several easy buckets – but it’ll get pushed harder than it has been for the last several games.

It’s been a relatively easy run since the win over Oklahoma State back in mid-December, but this could be the first time in a long time it has to fight to get to 70 points.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Houston will get to 70 points.

Cincinnati is struggling too much from the field, and this isn’t the team to go against when you’re trying to bust out of a slump.

How good as the Cougar three-point D been lately? 11-of-66. That’s what teams are hitting, but Cincinnati will keep this close enough throughout to be within range. Once big burst midway through the second half, though, will be just enough to survive.

The Xavier basketball coach found a legendary way to celebrate beating Cincinnati

His son carried $1,000 in cash to pay for drinks at a bar.

There’s a case to be made that Xavier-Cincinnati basketball is the best rivalry we don’t talk nearly enough about. The games are generally rugged, fraught affairs. The game in 2011 famously ended in a benches-clearing brawl, and most people marveled that it had taken so many years (it’s been played every season since 1946) for it to end that way.

Xavier won this year’s Crosstown Classic 73-66 last night, preventing Cincinnati from getting two in row — which it hasn’t done since 1996. Second-year Xavier coach Travis Steele found an amazing way to celebrate his first win in the rivalry, and it involved his son Winston hauling $1,000 in cash into a bar to pay for patrons’ drinks.

(Warning: Some foul language included in the video.)

Yeah, that will win over a few fans.

The weird thing about all of this, of course, is that if Steele wanted to take that $1,000 dollars and, you know, reward his team — the players who actually won the game — with a nice dinner or something he … couldn’t. Because it’d be an NCAA violation.

PREVIEW: The Rebels finally have a little bit of momentum back after dismantling Jackson State on Tuesday—and they’ll need it for arguably their toughest game of the early season against Cincinnati.

The tilt with the Bearcats is UNLV’s first in a three-game road trip, which also features their MWC opener against Fresno State and a semi-neutral site matchup in Salt Lake City against BYU.

The shooting woes that had plagued the Rebels throughout the first handful of games were nowhere to be found in their 80-57 win over Jackson State. The team shot 57.1% from the field and 45% from downtown. That’s exactly the kind of production UNLV will need to take down Cincinnati.

Junior guard Amauri Hardy leads the team with 18.3 points and 3.5 assists per game, followed by transfers Donnie Tillman (12.0 PPG, 4.6 RPG) and  Elijah Mitrou-Long (10.9 PPG, 3.9 APG).

And though Hardy led the way again on Tuesday with 20 points, the most important offensive contribution of the night came from junior Chiekh Mbacke Diong. The Senegalese big man tallied 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting, while also pulling down six of his 13 rebounds on the offensive glass. It was a huge outburst out of a player who has been notably anemic on that end of the floor.

Bryce Hamilton and Nick Blair also pitched in 12 points apiece, which could signal an important development for TJ Otzelberger. This team needs scoring support behind Hardy, Tillman, and Mitrou-Long. If they can get it, they could turn into a top-half team in the Mountain West. Getting transfer sharpshooter Jonah Antonio back in the lineup will help that cause.

But first, they have to take on a talented Cincinnati squad that has been receiving votes for the Top 25.

New head coach John Brannen has seen a few stumbles in his first couple games at the helm for the Bearcats, including an overtime loss at the Paradise Jam on Tuesday against Bowling Green. Cincinnati recovered to claw out an overtime win of their own against Valparaiso the next day.

While the Bearcats have been pretty good defensively, the offense has not held up its end of the bargain. The offseason was full of promise after it was announced that Oakland transfer Jaevin Cumberland would be joining his cousin (and one of the best players in the American), Jarron.

Though the team does have five players averaging double-digits (or very close), including both Cumberlands, the Bearcats have been plagued by turnovers. They committed 58 giveaways in three games at the Paradise Jam, barely eking out a 2-1 record, including their one-point victory over Illinois State in their first game at the event.

UNLV has had its fair share of issues with ball security, too, so expect this game to get a little sloppy.

Junior seven-footer Chris Vogt and senior forward Tre Scott average a combined 23 points and 17 rebounds, presenting a big challenge for the Rebels in the frontcourt. Keith Williams has also been a solid source of offense for the Bearcats.

But with the Bearcats suddenly struggling—and coming off some long travel to and from the Virgin Islands—the Rebels may have a chance to catch Cincinnati on the ropes.

All told, it will be difficult for UNLV to escape with a victory against a Cincinnati team that is probably bound for the NCAA Tournament. If the Rebels can grab a big road win here, it will give them a boost to get through the back half of their non-conference schedule.

Prediction: Cincinnati 74, UNLV 66

Race To New Year’s Six Bowl Game: Boise State Still Needs Help

Race To New Year’s Six Bowl Game: Boise State Still Needs Help

AAC is still in control.

Contact/Follow @JeremyMauss & @MWCwire

Broncos fans want Navy, or a split AAC title

The final weekend of the regular season still has a lot on the line for what teams are in the mix for the Cotton Bowl bid from the Group of Five schools. To cut through all of the noise there are three teams that can earn this bad, and we can stretch it to a fourth but it is a big stretch.

The teams that have the best shot are Memphis, Cincinnati and Boise State. There is a scenario where Navy gets in and force some chaos but that is unlikely, however since chaos is fun that path will be mentioned.

In the latest College Football Playoff rankings, the order is Memphis at 18, Cincinnati at 19, Boise State at 20, and Navy unranked.

The Broncos have the easiest path to go undefeated over its final two games as they take on Colorado State and then Hawaii in the Mountain West title game. Boise State is heavily favored in both.

The Tigers and Bearcats are basically tied at the hip. These two teams play at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC this Friday and it could be a rematch the week later in the American title game.

If Memphis wins it will 100 percent be a rematch but if Memphis loses then they could be on the outside looking in. For it to not be a Bearcats vs. Tigers title game, it will require Navy to beat Houston, because in this scenario the Midshipman would be in the AAC title game with a better record.

If Navy loses to Houston it will be a Memphis vs. Cincinnati American title game. For the Middies to get in they need to win and Memphis lose.

For Boise State’s purposes and a potential Cotton Bowl berth, they would want Memphis and Cincinnati to split the final two games and give the American champ two losses. The College Football Playoff committee has never ranked a two-loss Group of Five champion over a one-loss ever, so those are odds Boise State should like.

An even better scenario would be for Navy to get into the championship game and beat Cincinnati. With Navy not ranked at the moment, they very likely would not move up high enough to surpass a Boise State team that will be around the late teens in the playoff rankings.

Also, if Navy wins the American the rankings just might be held since they play Army the week after the championship games. The committee noted in past years they would hold off the rankings but that was when Navy was ranked an in the conversation, them being not ranked probably means the committee would go with Boise State due to the difference in rankings.
