2024 NFL draft stock watch after CFB Week 5: Who’s up and who is trending down?

2024 NFL draft stock watch after CFB Week 5: Who’s up and who is trending down?

Another exciting and interesting weekend of college football wrapped for the potential prospects for the 2024 NFL draft. Over a month into the college season, we’re starting to see who is consistently performing and who is more variable from week to week.

It’s a season-long process evaluating players, of course. But there are great weeks and down weeks for (almost) every prospect along the way. Here’s who helped themselves in Week 5 and who didn’t have a great showing over the final days of September.

It’s time for another 2024 mock draft as we continue to build our New Orleans Saints watch list in anticipation of the college football season. The Saints were projected to pick fast-rising Boston College guard Christian Mahogany, a name already high on our 2024 watch list, in this admittedly way-too-early model from ESPN’s Jordan Reid. Here’s Reid’s reasoning:

Interior offensive line is a major question mark for the Saints, with their top three options — Andrus PeatCesar Ruiz and Calvin Throckmorton — all scheduled to become free agents following the season. Mahogany was getting early-round buzz before tearing his right ACL heading into the 2022 season, and now that he is healthy, scouts are watching to see if he can follow Chris Lindstrom (2019) and Zion Johnson (2022) as the next Boston College first-round lineman. Mahogany has spent time at both guard spots, and at 6-foot-3, 335 pounds, he is tough to beat.

Few teams invest early-round picks in the trenches like New Orleans. Since Jeff Ireland was hired to oversee their college scouting department in 2015, New Orleans has picked offensive or defensive linemen with 11 of their 19 selections in the first two rounds. As Reid observed, the Saints will be looking for new blood at guard next offseason with all three of their top players at the position headed for free agency.

If Mahogany meets expectations and helps the Boston College line return to form, he could very well end up being their pick next April. But first he needs to prove he’s fully recovered from last year’s knee injury, and that he can play at a high enough level to justify that kind of buzz. So which other positions are on Reid’s radar when it comes to New Orleans?

Beyond the interior offensive line, Reid highlighted wide receiver and the defensive line as positions of need. Some prospects in his mock draft who could fit what the Saints typically look for include Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy (though he’s skinny at just 160 pounds; Rashid Shaheed is the lightest receiver in New Orleans at a listed 181 pounds) and Illinois defensive lineman Jer’Zhan Newton, a disruptive player who lined up at both end and tackle. We’ll add them both to the list.

Bad news for the Boston College football team heading into the 2022 season.

Christian Mahogany, an offensive guard who is a top NFL Draft prospect, told ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Thursday that he tore his ACL last month and expects to miss the entire 2022 campaign.

According to Thamel, Mahogany suffered the ACL injury in his right knee while working out at home in New Jersey.

Mahogany, a 6-foot-3, 335-pound redshirt junior, was a popular preseason All-ACC pick and was ranked by ESPN NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. as the No. 2 offensive guard prospect for next year’s draft.

Mahogany told Thamel that he is planning to come back to Boston College for the 2023 season.

As Thamel noted, Boston College will have five new full-time starters on the offensive line to start the season now that the Eagles will be without Mahogany, a second-team All-ACC selection last season.

Boston College OL Christian Mahogany to miss 2022 season with torn ACL

One of the top interior blockers in college football is expected to miss the entire 2022 season due to a knee injury

Boston College guard Christian Mahogany is expected to miss the entire 2022 college football season after suffering a torn ACL, per Pete Thamel of ESPN.

One of the top offensive line prospects in the 2023 NFL draft class, Mahogany was expected to follow college teammate Zion Johnson as a potential first-rounder in next year’s draft.

Now, he’ll set his sights on rehab and a full recovery, while the Golden Eagles look for the next man up to replace one of the nation’s best interior blockers. As far as his football future, Mahogany sounds like he’s leaning toward returning for another year in college, instead of making the jump to the NFL.

“I think I’m probably going to come back because it’s hard [after an injury],” Mahogany told ESPN. “I’m going to leave no doubt on my college career. Especially after an injury like this, I’m going to prove that I can still do it.”

After learning of the severity of the injury, Mahogany is doing his best to take the emotional roller-coaster in stride.

“I’m up and down,” Mahogany told ESPN. “Somedays it’s up, and some it’s down. I’m trying to keep a positive attitude. This is the plan for me. This is something that I have to overcome in my career. I’m going to make a full recovery and come back by any means necessary.”

He may not be suiting up this fall, but that doesn’t mean Mahogany won’t be close to the action, or missing out on making an impact for his teammates.

“I’m going to be around,” Mahogany told ESPN. “Whenever I come back to campus, hopefully soon, I’m going to be around. Whoever fills in my spot, I’m going to give them the pointers to be successful, whatever it takes.”
