Jaguars outlast Saints with late defensive stand

The Jaguars have won four in a row to improve to 5-2

The Jacksonville Jaguars have four straight wins after downing the New Orleans Saints, 31-24, on Thursday Night Football.

The Saints rallied from 15-point deficit to tie the game at 24.

Trevor Lawrence found Christian Kirk with a pass that turned into a 44-yard touchdown. The play proved to be the difference.

New Orlearns marched toward what it hoped would be a game-tying touchdown.

However, the Jaguars’ defense stiffened and at 5-2 it is Jacksonville’s best start in 16 seasons.

How Trevor Lawrence exploited a Colts flaw he spotted in Week 1

Trevor Lawrence’s 29-yard touchdown pass to Christian Kirk came after the quarterback spotted something on tape from their Week 1 win.

In the fourth quarter of a Week 1 game against the Indianapolis Colts, the Jacksonville Jaguars picked up a first down when Trevor Lawrence threw a quick pass to tight end Evan Engram near the sideline that turned into a 9-yard gain.

It was a solid play for the Jaguars offense, but it exposed a hole in the Colts defense that could’ve been exploited for a lot more. Five weeks later, Lawrence took advantage of it on a 29-yard touchdown pass to Christian Kirk.

The Colts defense relies mostly on a Cover 3 scheme under defensive coordinator and former Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley. Essentially, it usually asks two safeties to each cover a third of the deep secondary and a cornerback to drop back and handle the final third. Linebackers and other cornerbacks then take anything underneath.

It looks a little something like this:

On the Week 1 pass to Engram, Lawrence noticed that Colts cornerback Darrell Baker Jr. — who was supposed to be responsible for a deep third — was awfully quick to ditch his job and help make the tackle.

Here’s the play in full:

Kirk was left with a ton of space in front of him after Baker came down, but the ball was already on its way to Engram. So what if, given the same opportunity, Lawrence hit the Colts with a pump fake? Would Baker crash down again, leaving Kirk running free?

Yep, he sure would.

“I thought I had a little tell on just if I can set outside, get this corner to tie down,” Lawrence said. “He’s really the three deep, the deep third player. If he ties down, there’s really no one left for Christian. That’s what we talked about this week.

“That was something that I felt really confident that we would get. I showed him all the clips. It honestly happened exactly how we thought it would, it doesn’t always work that way when you think something is going to work. It was cool that it happened that way today.”

According to Kirk, it was an idea that came straight from the 24-year-old quarterback himself.

“I’ll give Trevor his flowers on this one. I know he is proud of it too,” Kirk said in the locker room after the game. “He brought me into the room and was like, ‘When we call this be ready, I’m going to pump the—we call it a hang route—and then I am going to be able to find a window.’

“We got the exact same look, he pumped the hang route and was able to and put it on me right in the area of the defense, in the void, and take advantage of that opportunity. He did a great job being able to see that, identifying it and telling the coaches that that is what he wanted to do and putting it in the end zone.”

Six games into the 2023 season, Lawrence now has seven touchdown passes with three interceptions.

Jaguars want to avoid London hangover: ‘We can’t lose what we gained’

The Jaguars got their season back on track in London. Now they have to avoid laying an egg and blowing the momentum.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are standing a little taller after winning back-to-back games in London. They left Duval with a losing record, but return at 3-2 after wins against the Atlanta Falcons and Buffalo Bills overseas.

Now they don’t want to blow it by laying an egg against the Indianapolis Colts.

“We can’t lose what we gained over in London,” Jaguars wide receiver Christian Kirk said Wednesday. “We have some momentum now. … Not having that London hangover, it’s important for us — it just goes back to bringing that energy that we had.”

A year ago, the Jaguars’ trip to the U.K. wasn’t as positive as their 2023 one. Trevor Lawrence threw for 125 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in a 21-17 loss to the Denver Broncos that proved to be a rock bottom of sorts for the quarterback.

Jacksonville returned home to get a 27-20 win against the Las Vegas Raiders in the next week to get back on track. But that win required a ferocious comeback after the Jaguars fell into a 17-0 hole in the first 20 minutes of the game.

“We need to guard against a little bit of a lull that happened to us last year when we came back,” Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said Wednesday. “It’s something that I’ll continue to talk to the team about.

“Going away for ten days was good for us, but we’ve got to bring that energy back. We can’t leave it in London. That’s a big part of this week but playing a divisional opponent can help that.”

In Week 1, the Jaguars earned a 31-21 win against the Colts, rallying from a fourth quarter deficit with two touchdowns in the last six minutes of the game. Indianapolis also has an eight-game losing streak at EverBank Stadium that dates back to 2015.

A loss to the Colts, who are set to start backup quarterback Gardner Minshew II, wouldn’t just erase the team’s momentum. It’d put the Jaguars in a hole in the AFC South and force them to make another climb back into the postseason hunt.

“We’ve got to continue that, the energy that I saw the last two games on the sidelines in Wembley and Tottenham,” Pederson said. “The way the guys were flying around, we can’t leave it in London. It’s got to come back with us and we’ve got to experience that again this Sunday.”

Jaguars outlast Bills in roller coaster 25-20 win in London

The Jaguars are 3-2 after picking up a 25-20 win against the Bills in London. Here’s how it all went down in a wild game:

The Jacksonville Jaguars are 3-2 after outlasting the Buffalo Bills for a much-needed 25-20 win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

Buffalo entered the game as hot as any team in the NFL after three straight blowout wins by at least 28 points. But a Bills offense that was averaging 34.8 points per game couldn’t get going until late in the game against the Jaguars.

The Jaguars offense similarly took time to get going, but orchestrated two lengthy, clutch touchdown drives in the fourth quarter to hold off a suddenly potent Bills offense.

Here’s how it all went down in the Jaguars’ wild five-point win:

5 Jaguars players to watch vs. the Bills in Week 5

Here are five Jaguars players to watch as they try to beat the Bills in their second straight London game:

Last week, the Jacksonville Jaguars won their first of back-to-back London games. This week, although marked as an away game, Jacksonville remains in London to take on a much more formidable opponent: the Buffalo Bills.

The Jaguars bounced back in Week 4 against the Atlanta Falcons. The defense allowed a season-low seven points, and the offense scored its most points since Week 1.

But their game against the Bills is sure to be more of a challenge.

Here are five Jaguars to watch in their Week 5 matchup against the Bills:

Doug Pederson raves about Calvin Ridley: ‘He’s just doing things right’

It was a quiet day for Calvin Ridley after an early touchdown, but Doug Pederson raved about the receiver after the game.

The Jacksonville Jaguars haven’t managed to get the same production out of Calvin Ridley that they did in the first two quarters of their season opener. While the receiver caught a touchdown early in Week 4 against his former team, the Atlanta Falcons, it was one of only two receptions for Ridley on the day.

But when Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson was asked about the receiver after the game, he had nothing but great things to say.

“I’m so proud of Calvin, what he’s been through in his life,” Pederson said. “He’s put a lot of things behind him. He’s focused on the future. His testimony is one that can be spread to a lot of professional and younger generation athletes, what he’s gone through and overcome adversity, and then to come out again today and get the touchdown and the big play at the end of the game, he’s just doing things right.

“He loves football. We love having him on the football team. He’s got a lot of energy. He’s excitable. I’m so proud of not only where he’s come from but where he’s going to as a ball player for us.”

While it didn’t show up on the stat sheet, Ridley drew a 40-yard pass interference penalty on A.J. Terrell in the fourth quarter that moved the Jaguars into Falcons territory.

Jaguars receiver Christian Kirk, who now leads the Jaguars in targets and receptions after grabbing eight passes Sunday, had similar praise for Ridley after the game.

“He’s a better person than he is a player, I’ll say that,” Kirk said. He brings so much charisma, energy, let alone his athletic talent and everything that he’s able to do as a wide receiver just kind of speaks for itself.

“But as a leader and as a veteran in our room, he means a lot to me, to Zay [Jones], to all the other young guys. We’re all constantly learning from him, and he’s a team player. As long as we’re walking off the field with a W, he’s happy.”

Through four games, Ridley has 15 receptions for 211 yards with two touchdowns.

Christian Kirk: Offense made progress, but has ‘a long way to go’

The Jaguars offense took a step in the right direction, but it was far from a perfect performance against the Falcons.

The Jacksonville Jaguars offense avoided the type of back-breaking errors that sank the team in a pair of September losses. But after scoring just one touchdown in a 23-7 win against the Atlanta Falcons, players on the team weren’t completely satisfied with the performance.

“I definitely think it’s a step in the right direction,” Jaguars receiver Christian Kirk said after the win. “I still think we have a long way to go to be a really good offense. There’s still some mistakes and some things that we didn’t do as well today, but we were able to make enough plays to go out there and get enough points to get a win.”

Jacksonville avoided turnovers and the offense committed only three penalties, two of which were accepted. The Jaguars passing offense was also efficient on the day with quarterback Trevor Lawrence completing 76.7 percent of his passes.

On the other hand, the Jaguars converted on only five of 16 third downs and came away with zero points on their only trip into the red zone.

Lawrence’s thoughts on the performance echoed Kirk’s analysis.

“Offensively, I thought we played well at times, in spurts, and found a way to win,” Lawrence said. “We did some things better than we have in the past but still got a lot to clean up. … There’s a ton more out there for us offensively, a couple plays that I missed that I am kind of kicking myself over, but we’re going to turn the page and go into Buffalo and make the corrections and get ready to put a game plan together to go win that game.”

Kirk led the Jaguars receivers with eight receptions for 84 yards. But maybe the biggest missed opportunity of the game for Jacksonville came when the receiver was running wide open in the end zone and wasn’t spotted by Lawrence, who was forced to roll to his right.

“It’s unfortunate, but we were able to win the game,” Kirk said of the play. “I think we were on the sideline laughing about it, but those are also opportunities that we need to take advantage of when we’re in tight games and we need those plays.

“Stuff like that is going to happen. It’s no fault on him. He’s playing, and I trust what he sees, and whatever he sees I’m going to stand behind him. It’s just a play in the game that I know for sure he’s going to want back, but we’ll make it when it counts.”

Aggies in the NFL: Where to watch in Week 4 of the NFL Schedule

See where all your favorite Aggies are playing during the fourth Sunday, and Monday of the 2023 NFL regular season.

Week Four of the 2023 NFL season started off in Green Bay, Wisconsin, as the Packers took on the NFC North preseason favorite Detroit Lions just four days removed from their rousing comeback win vs. Atlanta.

Well, Packer fans were in for a long night as soon as the first Lions possession, as the fighting Dan Campbell’s went up 14-3 in the first quarter, which rapidly increased to 27-3 at the half. While quarterback Jordan Love put on his best comeback impression, running back David Montgomery’s fourth-quarter kill shot touchdown ultimately sealed the deal for the visitors with a 34-20 victory, reaching an impressive 3-1 on the season.

As we do every week during the regular season, plenty of Aggies are well-represented within the NFL, including some of the best players on both sides of the ball. Here are the matchups, game times, and broadcasting information for several Aggies playing in the NFL this Sunday and Monday.

Fantasy football start ’em, sit ’em: Week 4

Here’s a look at some starts and sits for fantasy football in Week 4 of the 2023 season.

Nearly a quarter of the way into the season, fantasy football managers are already facing some difficult decisions regarding the starts and sits in their lineups entering Week 4.

Doing start/sit articles can be a little challenging. The players featured on the list below should not be taken as “must starts” or “must sits.” Instead, these are more suggestions on what we believe managers should do with fringe players heading into the weekend. The choice is ultimately up to the manager.

Just because a player is listed as a “start” doesn’t mean he should be put in the lineup over the secure, bona fide studs. Vice versa for the “sits.” If there’s no better option on the waiver wire or the bench, a manager shouldn’t automatically sit the player. That’s why these can be tricky waters to navigate.

Best Photos: Top Aggie performance in Week 3 of the NFL season

Texas A&M was well represented in Week Three of the NFL, and we have some of the best photos for you to check out

Football season is in full swing, and we are almost a quarter of the way through the regular season. As we look forward to the rest of the games this week, I’d like to take some time to recognize a few top week three performances from Aggies in the NFL.

First on the list is the Miami running back and former Texas A&M speedster De’Von Achane. He set the interwebs on fire with his breakout game against the Denver Broncos where he scored multiple times displaying his world-class speed and vision. Here are his stats from the 70-20 win over the Denver Broncos

  • 18 carries / 203 yards / 11.3 avg / 2 touchdowns
  • 4 catches / 30 yards / 7.5 avg / 2 touchdowns

Next, we have Myles Garrett, the 2017 No.1 overall pick to the Cleveland Browns. Just like Achane, he had social media ablaze over the weekend with his dominate game versus the Tennessee Titans. He was causing so much trouble against the assigned two tight ends to block Garrett. Here are his stats from Sunday’s victory.

  • 5 tackles / 3.5 sacks / 1 forced fumble

Last, we have a pair of wideouts that had solid games, but their teams came up empty. Mike Evans and Christian Kirk each scored a touchdown last Sunday and Monday, but it was not enough to help propel their team into the victory column. You can check their stat lines below.

Evans

  • 5 catches / 60 yards / 12 avg / 1 touchdown

Kirk

  • 4 catches / 54 yards / 13.5 avg / 1 touchdown

Another great week for theses former Aggies and you can check out some the best photos from week three.
