Auburn offers 4-star tight end in 2024 recruiting class

Christian Bentancur is one of the top tight ends in the 2024 recruiting class and Auburn is his latest scholarship offer.

Auburn has completely changed the way they recruit and use tight ends under [autotag]Bryan Harsin[/autotag].

The current group of tight ends is one of the most talented groups on the roster and the Tigers are not slowing down their pursuit of top-tier talent at the position. They extended an offer to four-star tight end [autotag]Christian Bentancur[/autotag] on Thursday.

Bentancur is a member of the 2024 recruiting class and is ranked as the No. 151 overall player and No. 8 tight end in the 247Sports composite ranking. He is also the No. 3 player from Illinois.

The 6-foot-5, 240-pound Bentancur is coming off of a monster sophomore season where he caught 49 passes for 1,020 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The Woodstock, Illinois native already has over 30 scholarship offers and is being pursued by Clemson, Ohio State, Texas A&M, and others.

Team captain John Samuel Shenker will be out of eligibility after this season and Auburn has yet to land a tight end in the 2023 recruiting class, making their efforts in the 2024 class even more important.

One of nation’s top-ranked tight ends ‘can’t wait to get back’ to Tiger Town

The lone uncommitted tight end prospect in the class of 2024 with an offer from Clemson to date is Marian Central Catholic (Woodstock, Illinois) four-star Christian Bentancur.

The 6-foot-5, 235-pound rising junior has been staying in touch with Clemson tight ends coach Kyle Richardson and the Tigers since they offered him on June 17.

“They’ve kept in contact, and they are really interested in me, especially knowing I’m the only tight end they have offered,” Bentancur told The Clemson Insider recently.

Bentancur picked up that offer a couple of weeks after traveling to campus and participating in the first session of the Dabo Swinney Camp on June 1.

The nation’s No. 4 tight end in the 2024 class, per Rivals, Bentancur plans to return to Tiger Town this winter and is certainly excited to do so.

“I’ll be back at Clemson sometime this winter and I can’t wait to get back!” he said.

A number of other schools are in line to get visits from Bentancur during the upcoming college football season.

“I’ll be at Ohio State, Penn State, Alabama, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Wisconsin and Iowa State this fall,” he said.

Bentancur, who boasts 30-plus total offers, is simply soaking in the recruiting process right now and doesn’t claim any favorites at this point.

“I’m still taking it in, so there aren’t any top schools yet,” he said.

Where would he say the Tigers stand with him right now?

“I’m not sure how far up there Clemson is, but they are pretty high!” he said.

Bentancur is ranked as high as the No. 99 overall prospect in the country for the 2024 class by Rivals, which pegs him as the No. 4 tight end and No. 2 prospect in the state of Illinois.

As a sophomore last season, he recorded 53 receptions for 1,165 yards and 16 touchdowns.

The Insider Report: Updates on newly offered prospects, latest on some remaining targets

In this week’s edition of The Insider Report, The Clemson Insider wanted to pass along the latest regarding some remaining class of 2023 targets for Clemson, as well as some updates on newly offered prospects in the 2024 class.

Following his decommitment from Kansas State this past week, rumors started to circulate that Derby (Kansas) four-star running back Dylan Edwards could presumably be an option for CJ Spiller and Clemson.

That looked to be the case when Clemson commits AJ Hoffler and Peter Woods began to tweet at Edwards about coming down to Tiger Town. After speaking with multiple sources, we can tell you that Hoffler, Woods and several others had begun to recruit Edwards on their own accord while trying to get Clemson’s coaches in the mix as well.

While there is interest from Clemson’s standpoint, Edwards may have already made up his mind about his next home. Following the timeline of events, Edwards announced an offer from Notre Dame on Wednesday, then proceeded to visit South Bend Thursday and later walked back his Kansas State pledge on Friday.

Unless something drastic changes, the expectation is that the Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year will commit to Marcus Freeman’s program in the coming weeks, if not the coming days.

Staying on the offensive side of the ball, Clemson could theoretically use a fourth and final scholarship on an offensive lineman in this class.

Thomas Austin and the Tigers landed their most recent offensive line commitment on Monday, July 4, from Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy (McDonough, Ga.) four-star Zechariah Owens, who joins a couple of other acclaimed offensive linemen in Clemson’s 2023 class — a pair of Lone Star State standouts in Permian High School (Odessa, Texas) four-star Harris Sewell and Vandegrift High School (Austin, Texas) four-star Ian Reed.

A name that came up in recent conversations with multiple sources is four-star DJ Chester, who is a high school teammate of Owens. Chester, who 247Sports considers to be the nation’s No. 6 tackle and No. 51 overall prospect in the 2023 class, has received extensive looks from programs like Auburn, LSU, Florida State, Michigan and Ole Miss.

In fact, the 6-foot-5, 305-pound offensive lineman was recently crystal balled to Brian Kelly’s program.

In any event, we’ve been told Chester is said to love the program. Whether Clemson still takes a fourth offensive lineman in the class remains to be seen.

Staying in the trenches, following Hunter Osborne’s commitment to the University of Alabama on Monday evening, Clemson’s full attention seems to be focused on North Gwinnett (Suwanee, Ga.) four-star defensive tackle Kayden McDonald.

McDonald was supposed to be at last week’s All In Cookout, but because of circumstances beyond his control, he was unable to attend. TCI was told that while several other Georgia high schoolers in Clemson’s commitment class received exceptions from their coaches to attend last Monday’s cookout, McDonald didn’t receive permission to go.

That doesn’t preclude him from visiting Clemson and possibly taking an official visit to a game this season. McDonald was crystal balled to Clemson over the weekend and the feeling remains that things are starting to heat up with the Peach State product.

Last but certainly not least, Clemson surprisingly doled out an offer to a Big Ten commit on Monday. Winton Woods (Cincinnati, Ohio) four-star defensive back Jeremaine Matthews, Jr. announced the offer via social media.

Matthews has been in consistent contact with Mike Reed, as the offer finally culminated Monday.

Clemson has one remaining defensive back spot open, which was seemingly reserved for Shelton Lewis following the All-In Cookout. With an Aug. 8 decision date looming, Clemson is said to be the leader in the clubhouse to land Lewis’s commitment.

In fact, TCI was told by a trusted source after Clemson offered Lewis, that the University of North Carolina, which has been deemed a favorite to land the Peach State defensive back after he walked back his Pitt pledge, feels like Clemson is going to land Lewis.

Whether that bears fruit come next Monday is anyone’s guess, but it’s still interesting that Clemson chose to move on Matthews. The Tigers weren’t the only program to offer Matthews on the first day of August, as Ole Miss also pulled the trigger on an offer.

At this point in time, Matthews told us that right now, he doesn’t really know if a visit to Clemson will materialize. There’s a lot going on right now and Clemson could also be full at the defensive back position if Lewis makes the expected move a week from today.

Update on top 2024 TE target

TCI checked back in to get the latest with the lone uncommitted tight end prospect in the 2024 class that owns an offer from the Tigers — Marian Central Catholic (Woodstock, Illinois) four-star Christian Bentancur.

The nation’s No. 4 tight end in his class per Rivals, Bentancur picked up the offer from Clemson on June 17, a couple of weeks after he competed in the first session of the Dabo Swinney Camp on June 1. He has since kept in touch with Clemson tight ends coach Kyle Richardson and the Tigers, who, according to Bentancur, have reiterated that “they are really interested” in him.

The 6-foot-5, 235-pound rising junior told TCI he plans to return to Clemson sometime this winter and “can’t wait to get back” to Tiger Town.

Schools that Bentancur plans to visit this fall, he said, are Ohio State, Penn State, Alabama, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Wisconsin and Iowa State.

Bentancur, who boasts 30-plus total offers, is simply taking in the recruiting process right now and doesn’t claim any favorites at this point.

Where would he say the Tigers stand with him right now?

“I’m not sure how far up there Clemson is, but they are pretty high!” he said.

As a sophomore last season, Bentancur recorded 53 receptions for 1,165 yards and 16 touchdowns.

The latest on a highly touted corner with Clemson connection

TCI also caught up with another highly regarded prospect who was offered by Clemson this summer as well – Oscar Smith High School (Chesapeake, Va.) four-star cornerback Asaad Brown, who has a tie to Clemson’s football program in the form of a former Oscar Smith teammate – Sherrod Covil, Jr., now a freshman safety for the Tigers.

Brown — the No. 9 cornerback and No. 113 overall prospect in the 2024 class according to 247Sports — received an offer from the Tigers when he visited campus on June 9. He told TCI that he has talked to Mike Reed a couple of times lately and that his relationship with Clemson’s cornerbacks coach is “definitely” growing.

Brown gave us his thoughts on Reed, calling him a “great guy” and saying, “I can see myself getting developed by him.”

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound rising junior is “ready to see what Clemson’s going to do this year” and said he’s “definitely hoping” to get to Death Valley to watch the Tigers and his former teammate play this season.

“I’m going to definitely go support Sherrod,” Brown said, adding that he communicates regularly with Covil, whom Brown shares a close bond with.

“I would definitely like to see them run down the hill and experience that,” he added.

Other schools Brown said he thinks he’ll definitely make it to during the season are LSU, Virginia Tech, Ole Miss and Texas A&M.

Brown said the Tigers are one of the teams standing out to him as far as how hard they’re recruiting him.

After receiving the offer from Clemson, Brown, who holds three dozen total offers, told TCI that the Tigers were definitely in his top three.

Has anything changed since then about where Clemson stands with him?

“Nah,” he said. “They’re still there.”

Clemson ‘definitely up there’ for top Midwest TE after ‘big’ offer

Last week, Clemson extended an offer to a highly touted tight end prospect from the Midwest who participated in the Dabo Swinney Camp at the beginning of this month.

After working out during the first day of the camp on June 1, Marian Central Catholic High School (Woodstock, Illinois) four-star Christian Bentancur announced the offer from the Tigers on Friday, June 17, following a conversation with tight ends coach Kyle Richardson.

“It was big knowing how Clemson recruits,” Bentancur said to The Clemson Insider of receiving the offer, “and I was offered on the phone by Coach Richardson.”

Based on how the Swinney Camp went for Bentancur and what he heard from Richardson there, Bentancur told TCI recently that he was optimistic about his chances of earning an offer from Clemson, and he was right.

Bentancur (6-5, 235) became just the second tight end in the 2024 class to report an offer from Clemson, joining Charlotte (N.C.) Catholic four-star Jack Larsen.

The nation’s No. 14 tight end in the 2024 class, per 247Sports, Bentancur is well aware that the Tigers are judicious with their offers and don’t just hand out offers to anyone – and that’s something that stands out to him when he thinks about Clemson as one of his college options.

“Clemson is an elite school for sure that has the toughest recruiting style out of most the schools in the nation,” he said.

Bentancur is already planning a return trip to Tiger Town after picking up the offer.

“I will be back for either a game or sometime in the winter for another visit,” he said.

Clemson joined schools such as Ohio State, Florida, Florida State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Stanford, Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin and Tennessee, to name some, on Bentancur’s offer list.

Where do the Tigers stand with him right now after pulling the trigger on the offer?

“After the Clemson offer, they are definitely up there on my list,” he said, “and I’m definitely looking forward to building our relationship!”

Bentancur is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 5 prospect in the state of Illinois, No. 14 tight end nationally and No. 236 overall prospect regardless of position for the 2024 class.

As a sophomore last season, he recorded 53 receptions for 1,165 yards and 16 touchdowns.

A highly touted tight end prospect from the Midwest made his way to Clemson for the first session of the Dabo Swinney Camp on June 1 and came away very impressed after his time at the camp.

It was the first-ever trip to Tiger Town for Marian Central Catholic High School (Woodstock, Illinois) four-star Christian Bentancur, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 14 tight end in the 2024 class by 247Sports and really enjoyed participating in the camp.

In fact, his expectations coming into it were exceeded.

“It went amazing,” Bentancur told The Clemson Insider regarding his camp experience. “Went better than expected and was very fun!”

Bentancur, who boasts more than two dozen scholarship offers, is on the Tigers’ recruiting radar and had been communicating a little bit with tight ends coach Kyle Richardson prior to attending the camp.

According to Bentancur, Richardson and Clemson’s coaches seemed to like what they saw from the 6-foot-5, 235-pound rising junior when he worked out.

“I feel like my chances are pretty good after talking to Coach Richardson,” Bentancur said of potentially earning an offer from Clemson. “Hopefully we’ll see it in the near future!”

Clemson certainly piques Bentancur’s interest, especially after his first trip to campus and outstanding Swinney Camp experience, and he would love to add the Tigers to his offer list.

“It is definitely an elite program with a lot to offer with a beautiful area,” he said, “and the people are great.”

A highly regarded tight end prospect from the Midwest will be on Clemson’s campus for the first time in just a few days and is ready to show the Tigers’ coaching staff what he can do on the field.

Marian Central Catholic High School (Woodstock, Illinois) four-star Christian Bentancur – the nation’s No. 14 tight end in the 2024 class, per 247Sports – will travel to Tiger Town on June 1 to compete during the first session of the Dabo Swinney Football Camp.

“I’m super stoked to check out Clemson,” he told The Clemson Insider, “and I just want to prove to them I’m one of the best in the nation and an all-around tight end.”

The 6-foot-5, 235-pound rising junior has reeled in more than two dozen scholarship offers. As a sophomore last season, he posted 53 receptions for 1,165 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Clemson hasn’t offered Bentancur yet but has shown interest, and though he doesn’t have a definitive feel for the Tigers’ level of interest in him entering the Swinney Camp, he hopes to solidify his place on the Tigers’ recruiting radar with a strong showing at the camp.

“I haven’t got the chance to talk to them much, but I’ve been a little bit in contact with (tight ends) coach (Kyle) Richardson,” Bentancur said. “So I’m not sure how much they are interested, but I’m going to try to prove it.”

Bentancur is also planning to camp this summer at a couple of other schools that have not yet offered him in Ohio State and Notre Dame.

Plenty of others have already extended offers to Bentancur, including schools such as Oklahoma, Oregon, Stanford, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, Iowa State, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisville, Virginia Tech and Cincinnati.

Clemson certainly piques Bentancur’s interest heading into his first trip to campus this week, and he would love to add the Tigers to his offer list.

“They are one of the most successful programs in the nation,” he said. “Getting an offer from Clemson would be crazy and they definitely spark my interest.”

Iowa Hawkeyes offer 2024 ATH Emmett Mosley out of California

Iowa offered 2024 athlete Emmett Mosley out of Santa Margarita Catholic High School in California.

Iowa stayed busy with its 2024 recruiting efforts over the weekend, offering athlete [autotag]Emmett Mosley[/autotag] out of Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.

The 6-foot, 175 pound athlete is ranked as a four-star recruit by 247Sports, Rivals and in the On3 consensus. 247Sports regards Mosley as the No. 120 player nationally in the 2024 cycle, the No. 19 athlete and the 12th-best player from California.

Meanwhile, Rivals ranks Mosley as the No. 154 player nationally, the No. 23 athlete and the No. 14 player from California. On3 rates Mosley as a three-star prospect, the No. 261 player nationally, the No. 19 athlete and as the Golden State’s 18th highest-rated recruit. In the On3 consensus, Mosley checks in as the country’s No. 187 player, the No. 12 athlete and the No. 14 player from California. According to 247Sports, Mosley also holds offers from Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Georgia, LSU, Notre Dame, Penn State, Texas and USC.

It continues a recent offers surge in the 2024 class. In the last three weeks, Iowa has offered athlete [autotag]Caleb Benning[/autotag] from Westside High School in Omaha, Neb., tight end [autotag]Christian Bentancur[/autotag] from Marian Central High School in Woodstock, Ill., running back [autotag]Jordan Marshall[/autotag] from Archbishop Moeller High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, offensive lineman [autotag]Ian Moore[/autotag] from New Palestine High School in Indiana and athlete [autotag]Preston Ries[/autotag] from Monticello High School in Iowa.

The Hawkeyes also offered and subsequently earned a commitment from Derek Weisskopf of Williamsburg High School in Iowa. Adding the commitment from Weisskopf means that the Hawkeyes now have commitments from the top three players from Iowa in the 2024 class. Iowa also has commitments from offensive lineman [autotag]Cody Fox[/autotag] and linebacker [autotag]Cam Buffington[/autotag].

Mosley has played both wide receiver and in the defensive backfield for Santa Margarita. He’s the son of former Notre Dame football player Emmett Mosley. His mother, Cindy Mosley, played soccer at Notre Dame and won the Hermann Trophy. Mosley’s sister, Jalyn Mosley, currently plays for Iowa’s women’s soccer team and will be a junior this coming season. Here’s a look at Mosley’s freshman season Hudl highlights.

In-state 2024 ATH Derek Weisskopf commits to the Iowa Hawkeyes

Class of 2024 athlete Derek Weisskopf announced his commitment to Iowa, becoming the third in-state commit in the Hawkeyes’ class.

Iowa just might make the Hawkeye State a monopoly when it comes to high-profile targets in the 2024 class. After being offered recently on April 11, Williamsburg High School product Derek Weisskopf didn’t wait long to make his college decision.

The 6-foot-3, 200 pound athlete announced his commitment to Iowa. In the process, Weisskopf became the third in-state player to pledge to the Hawkeyes. Iowa also has commitments from East Buchanan High School offensive lineman Cody Fox and Winfield-Mt. Union High School linebacker Cam Buffington.

Weisskopf is rated as a three-star athlete on both 247Sports and Rivals. According to 247Sports, Weisskopf is the nation’s No. 51 athlete and the No. 3 player from the state of Iowa. With Weisskopf’s commitment, the Hawkeyes now have commitments from each of the top three players from the state of Iowa according to 247Sports.

247Sports rates Fox as a four-star player, the country’s No. 188 recruit overall, the No. 10 interior offensive lineman and the top player in the 2024 class from the state of Iowa. Meanwhile, Buffington is regarded as a three-star talent, the No. 18 linebacker and the second-best player from Iowa.

The Hawkeyes have also offered 247Sports’ next two highest-rated players from Iowa. Bondurant-Farrar athlete Titus Cram is a three-star prospect, the No. 4 player from Iowa and was offered by the Hawks on Sept. 18, 2021. Monticello High School athlete Preston Ries also recently picked up an Iowa offer and he’s listed as the No. 5 player from the Hawkeye state according to 247Sports.

Weisskopf is both a football and basketball star at Williamsburg High School. He’s played both offense and defense on the gridiron, too, something Hawkeye Report editor Blair Sanderson touched on after Weisskopf’s commitment.

Last fall as a sophomore, Weisskopf finished the season with 80 tackles and three interceptions on defense and 23 catches for 372 yards and five touchdowns on offense for Williamsburg.

A multisport athlete, he also led Williamsburg on the basketball court this past winter, averaging 15.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Currently in track season, Weisskopf ranks No. 1 in the state with a 6-foot-9 high jump and will compete at the Drake Relays later this month. – Sanderson, Hawkeye Report.

With Weisskopf’s commitment, Iowa continues a fast start to the 2024 class. 247Sports and Rivals both have the Hawkeyes’ 2024 class ranked as the nation’s No. 4 class. Here’s a look at Weisskopf’s sophomore season Hudl highlights and a look at his full recruiting profile below.
