Florida State announces plans to retire Jameis Winston’s college jersey

Florida State announced plans to retire Jameis Winston’s college jersey at Saturday’s game versus North Alabama:

Now this is cool: Florida State announced plans to retire Jameis Winston’s college jersey at Saturday’s game versus North Alabama, recognizing the New Orleans Saints quarterback for his accomplishments in Tallahassee. Winston led the school to a 14-0 record and a Rose Bowl win back in 2013, setting the stage for a College Football Playoff run in his 2014 sophomore season.

Winston only played two years at Florida State, but he left with the fourth-most career passing yards (7,964) and second-most touchdown passes (65) in school history, plus a 26-1 record.

And now, a decade since he turned pro, Winston will see the jersey he wore honored in an exclusive group. He’s just the eleventh player to earn this recognition at Florida State, joining the likes of Fred Biletnikoff, Derrick Brooks, Terrell Buckley, Warrick Dunn, Marvin Jones, Deion Sanders, Ron Sellers, Ron Simmons, Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke.

Good for him. Winston’s jersey will be retired in a ceremony at the end of the first quarter in Saturday’s home game at Doak S. Campbell Stadium. It’s also senior night, and kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. CT with television coverage on The CW network.

Check it out: College football 1989 recruiting throwback

A lot happening here…

As any Notre Dame fan has likely seen in the last few months former football great [autotag]Jerome Bettis[/autotag] was back on campus this past semester taking the necessary classes to finish his degree.  The story of a Pro Football Hall of Famer returning to get his college degree at 50 years old caught the attention of several media outlets as it was fun to see The Bus back at Notre Dame.

This past weekend Bettis graduated from Notre Dame alongside the rest of the class of 2022.

For those unfamiliar, Tom Lemming is essentially to college recruiting what Mel Kiper, Jr. is to the NFL draft.  Before it was anywhere near as popular, he was the one going coast-to-coast evaluating players and talent long before the star-ratings were even in place.

On Wednesday, Lemming tweeted quite the throwback in honor of Bettis graduating from the University of Notre Dame.

How is that for a throwback?

Bettis with a flat top you could balance a glass of water on, [autotag]Jim Flanigan[/autotag] looking like the All-American boy, and future Ohio State and Minnesota Vikings standout Robert Smith in there as well.

As for the 2000 Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke that was also part of that class, consider this fun fact:

Bettis rushed for 8462 yards, 41 touchdowns, pulled in another 1,075 receiving yards and three touchdown receptions all as a pro BEFORE Weinke began his Heisman Trophy winning season in 2000.

How [autotag]Drew Brees[/autotag] didn’t win that Heisman Trophy is still beyond me but I thought you’d enjoy that pull from Lemming.

Chris Weinke is excited to reunite with Chip Long at Georgia Tech.

Former Tennessee running backs (2018) and quarterbacks coach (2019-20) Chris Weinke has been hired at Georgia Tech.

Weinke will serve as the Yellow Jackets’ quarterbacks coach. He will reunite with former Tennessee analyst Chip Long. Long was hired as Georgia Tech’s offensive coordinator in December.

Long served as an analyst at Tennessee in 2020.

“I’m excited to be at Georgia Tech and grateful to Coach (Geoff) Collins for the opportunity,” Weinke said. “I already have a lot of familiarity with the staff, having previously worked with Chip and Brent (Key), having played with (defensive backs coach) Travares Tillman with the Panthers and having recruited (running backs coach) Mike Daniels’ players when he was a high school head coach.

“It’s an honor to join such a great group of coaches. I can’t wait to get started with all of them and the really talented players in the quarterback room.”

Fall training camp: Chris Weinke’s analysis of J.T. Shrout

Fall training camp: Chris Weinke’s analysis of J.T. Shrout

KNOXVILLE — Quarterback J.T. Shrout enters his third season at Tennessee.

The 6-foot-3, 213-pound redshirt sophomore appeared in four games and started one contest last season. Shrout finished the season going 13-for-27 through-the-air and totaled 179 passing yards and one touchdown.

Shrout is part of a quarterback room that consists of redshirt senior Jarrett Guarantano, sophomore Brian Maurer and freshman Harrison Bailey. Guarantano, Maurer and Shrout all started games last season.

During the third week of fall training camp, Tennessee’s quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke discussed Shrout ahead of the upcoming season.

“J.T. is a guy that works his tale off,” Weinke said on a Zoom call with reporters. “He studies the game. He spends extra time in here watching film. It’s important to him and that’s evident. You see that every day from this young man.

“I think the advantage now of going into that second year of this same offense with Coach (Jim) Chaney, I think all of the guys are a little more comfortable, with the exception of Harrison (Bailey) who hasn’t been in this offense.”

Weinke mentioned Shrout “is very conscious of every move that he makes.”

“Sometimes, when you get to be too careful, you start to overthink,” Weinke said. “I think he needs to continue to trust himself. I tell the guys all the time, one of the biggest things we talk about is eye discipline. Know what you’re looking at and then see what you’re looking at. They’re kind of going, ‘Well, wait a second Coach.’

“At the end of the day, J.T. can make all the throws. He throws it as good as a lot of guys I’ve been around. I think his familiarity with the offense is allowing him to operate at a much faster pace right now. We have to eliminate the mistakes and that goes for all of the quarterbacks, but I think if we can eliminate the disastrous plays, whether it’s one a practice or it’s five a practice, when we can eliminate those, you’ll see great progress at that position.”

Fall training camp: Harrison Bailey ‘can make all of the throws’

KNOXVILLE — Freshman quarterback Harrison Bailey missed the early part of fall training camp ahead of the upcoming 2020 season.

The 6-foot-5, 225-pound freshman quarterback from Marietta High School in Marietta, Georgia, missed time early on in camp due to social quarantine.

Bailey has since returned to the practice field for the Vols.

“Harrison didn’t practice for the first couple of days, but at our last practice I thought he had a period there, where he really kind of shined, taking care of the football, getting the ball out of his hands,” Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt said of Bailey on Aug. 28. “He’s just like any freshman, he needs tons of reps.

“He needs it, at the speed that the game is in college, and the more reps he gets the better he’ll get, just like any other young player, so he’s just got to continue to get opportunities.”

Ahead of the Vols’ scrimmage Saturday, Tennessee quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke discussed his freshman signal-caller being one who “can make all of the throws.”

“He did miss a little bit of time and that always hurts for a guy that was able to come in early and not be able to go through spring ball, it hurts you a little bit in terms of your growth and development,” Weinke said of Bailey during a Zoom call with reporters. “I think the biggest thing for him is he’s learning a new language.

“We always say that, ‘Hey, when you’re not sure, you’re going to probably play a little bit slower.’ I think the biggest thing for him is to continue to progress, continue to learn the system. He can make all of the throws. There’s no doubt about it.”

Weinke mentioned that he and Tennessee’s staff are trying to create “an understanding of what we’re asking him to do, then be able to process the information, and then do it with a sense of urgency.”

“That’s hard right now for any young quarterback,” Weinke said. “What he was able to do on a couple of concepts the other day in practice, when he got back, he was comfortable. He knew them, he felt comfortable, he knew coverage and the ball came out.

“Now we have to create that consistency with every play in our playbook and I think you’ll see that growth continue as he gets more comfortable and he gets more reps.”
