The Carolina Panthers signed veteran defensive tackle Caraun Reid earlier today. In a corresponding move, the team waived former Wisconsin Badger linebacker Chris Orr.

Orr was brought in as an undrafted free agent after the 2020 NFL draft. The former Badger was then active for three games during the season, that coming before bouncing back-and-forth to and from the team’s practice squad.

The former Wisconsin star will now search for a new NFL home with the season nearly three months away.

Panthers sign former Jaguars DT Caraun Reid, release LB Chris Orr

To make room for Reid on the 90-man roster, the Panthers released second-year linebacker Chris Orr.

The Panthers have done some heavy remodeling to their interior defensive line rotation this offseason. After signing DaQuan Jones late in free agency and adding two more tackles in the draft, the team has also signed former Jaguars defensive tackle Caraun Reid.

A fifth-round pick by the Lions in the 2014 NFL draft, Reid (6-foot-2, 292 pounds) has jumped around a lot, playing for Detroit, Jacksonville, Arizona, Dallas and the Chargers. Reid has started 16 of his 54 career games and totaled 3.5 sacks, 11 quarterback hits and 11 tackles for a loss so far.

To make room for Reid on the 90-man roster, the Panthers released second-year linebacker Chris Orr.

Two former Badgers signed to reserve/future contracts by their NFL teams

Former Wisconsin Badgers Chris Orr and Beau Benzschawel were signed to reserve/future contracts by the Houston Texans and Carolina Panthers

Now that the NFL regular season has come to an end and 18 teams have played their final game, we are beginning to see former Wisconsin Badgers put pen to paper and sign contracts for next season.

Two of those names, with more to come as more teams are eliminated from the playoffs, are offensive lineman Beau Benzschawel and inside linebacker Chris Orr—players who signed reserve/future contracts this week with the Houston Texans and Carolina Panthers respectively.

The contracts ensure the two players will be part of their team’s offseason rosters and enter training camp with a shot at making the active roster.

Orr and Benzschawel combined to play in four games this season, each spending most of the year on the practice squad.

Their NFL journeys aren’t complete yet, and we’ll monitor their chances to make an active roster next season as the 2021 NFL season begins to approach.

UPDATE: Former Wisconsin LB Chirs Orr re-signs with the Panthers’ practice squad

Former Wisconsin football linebacker Chris Orr re-signs with the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad after they cut him two days ago.

After former Wisconsin Badger linebacker Chris Orr was cut by the Carolina Panthers yesterday he didn’t take long to return to the field in some capacity as he re-signed with the team’s practice squad.

The former Badger linebacker will now continue his push to break into the league and find a permanent home.

Panthers announce several moves ahead of Week 14 matchup with Broncos

The Carolina Panthers have announced a series of moves ahead of tomorrow’s game against the Denver Broncos.

The Carolina Panthers have announced a series of moves ahead of tomorrow’s game against the Denver Broncos.

Here’s a recap of the changes they’ve made.

LB Adarius Taylor activated from IR

First, veteran linebacker Adarius Taylor has been activated from the team’s injured reserve list, where he’s been since Week 10. Before the groin injury that put him there, he was a core special teames contributor. In nine games this season, he’s played 146 special teams snaps, 46% of the team’s total.

DT Woodrow Hamilton signed to active roster

Carolina is thin at defensive tackle right now with starter Zach Kerr on their reserve/COVID-19 list. So, the team has signed practice squad DT Woodrow Hamilton to the active roster. Assuming he’s in the lineup against Denver, it will be the fourth game he’s played this season.

WR Marken Michel, DT Mike Panasiuk elevated

Two other practice squad players are also being elevated to the active roster. Wide receiver Marken Michel and defensive tackle Mike Panasiuk have been given COVID-19 designations, so they won’t count against the game-day roster.

LB Chris Orr waived

The Panthers also waived undrafted rookie linebacker Chris Orr. He appeared in the team’s last three games, mostly on special teams.

Panthers make practice squad, roster changes ahead of Week 11 game

The Panthers have just announced a series of roster/practice squad moves ahead of tomorrow’s game with the Lions.

The Panthers have just announced a series of roster/practice squad moves ahead of tomorrow’s game with the Lions.

Here is a quick review of the team’s Saturday transactions.

LB Chris Orr signed to active roster

First, Carolina’s undrafted rookie linebacker Chris Orr has been signed to the active roster. This will be his second straight game on the official 53. He played 20 special teams snaps against the Buccaneers Week 10. Orr posted 15 sacks and 21 tackles for a loss during his time at Wisconsin.

LB/S Sean Chandler waived

In a corresponding move, the team waived former Giants linebacker Sean Chandler, who was picked up after Juston Burris suffered his rib injury back in Week 6. Instead of starting Chandler, the team looked to rookie Sam Franklin to take Burris’ place in the lineup. Chandler wound up not playing a single snap for the Panthers.

DB Natrell Jamerson activated (COVID-19)

DB Natrell Jamerson has also been activated from the practice squad. He has a COVID-19 designation so he won’t count against the roster. He’s appeared in 18 live games since since the Saints picked him in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL draft, all on special teams.

K Taylor Bertolet re-signed to practice squad

Former Texas A&M kicker Taylor Bertolet has been on and off the practice squad these last few weeks. He serves as an emergency kicker option for the team in the event that Joey Slye either gets injured or tests positive for COVID-19 and can’t be cleared in time to play.

LB Daniel Bituli signed to practice squad

Bituli has also been hovering around the edges of the practice squad for a couple weeks. This is the first time he’s been signed, though. He played his college ball at Tennessee and provides depth at linebacker/special teams following veteran Adarius Taylor being placed on injured reserve.

In related news, the team waived former Eagles wide receiver Shelton Gibson from the practice squad on Friday.

Panthers activate CB Eli Apple plus 2 players from practice squad

The team has also activated running back Reggie Bonnafon and undrafted rookie linebacker Chris Orr from the practice squad.

The Carolina Panthers have confirmed this morning’s report that they’re activating cornerback Eli Apple from the injured reserve list. Defensive end Shareef Miller has been waived to make room for him on the 53-man roster.

The team has also activated running back Reggie Bonnafon and undrafted rookie linebacker Chris Orr from the practice squad.

Bonnafon was in the lineup last week against the Chargers even though he didn’t get much playing time behind Mike Davis.

Orr may only play if middle linebacker Tahir Whitehead can’t go. He has been added to the injury report and is listed as questionable due to a thigh issue. Whitehead not being in the lineup could turn out to be a plus for the Panthers, though.

While there are potential issues with having the regular defensive playcaller out, Whitehead has been a liability in coverage and Arizona runs its offense in such a way that having three linebackers on the field at once is just asking for trouble. At the moment, the top two on the team are Shaq Thompson and rookie Jeremy Chinn. It might be worth seeing what Orr can do, but those two should get the lions’ share of the linebacker snaps.

Carolina Panthers 2020 practice squad tracker

Here is where we will be tracking all of the additions to the Carolina Panthers’ squad, which can hold up to 16 players this year.

NFL teams can begin signing players to their practice squad beginning at 1:00 p.m. eastern time today.

On this page, we will be tracking all of the additions to the Carolina Panthers’ squad, which can hold up to 16 players this year. Here is a look at who has joined the squad so far.

WR Ishmael Hyman

The first reported practice squad signing is Hyman, who impressed observers at training camp despite competing in a loaded receiver corps. It’s the deepest position group on the team, so we might see a couple more join the squad.

Two former Badgers waived by the Carolina Panthers

Normally right now the nation would be watching preseason NFL games and following how roster long-shots perform in their on-field opportunities, trying to project whether the players will the 53-man roster.

Now, without preseason games, the cuts still need to happen–this time, though, only based on what coaches saw during OTAs and training camp.

After two former Badgers–Dare Ogunbowale and Nick Nelson–were recently released by their NFL teams two more have joined the list: now-former Carolina Panthers Natrell Jamerson and Chris Orr.

Jamerson’s NFL path since the Saints took him in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft has been a windy one, bouncing from the Saints, to the Texans, to the Packers and then to the Panthers in a span of only two seasons.

His best season of production was the 2018 season during which he played in a combined 12 games for two different teams and recorded 10 tackles and one pass defended.

Orr, on the other hand, was recently signed by the Panthers after the 2020 NFL Draft after absolutely dominating during his senior season in Madison.

The path towards making a roster as a late-round pick or undrafted free agent is undoubtably more challenging this year without the opportunity of preseason games and an overall shortened offseason.

The two players will now be placed on waivers and other teams will get a shot to land them before they become free agents. The most likely result of the process for both Jamerson and Orr is a spot on the Panthers’ practice squad where they’ll await another shot at the 53-man roster.
