Lions vs. Jaguars draws a familiar announcing team for Week 13

The Lions are back on FOX for Week 13 and did not draw one of the network’s top broadcast teams

Detroit football returns to a more familiar time slot for Week 13. Sunday’s 1 p.m. kickoff against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Ford Field brings back a familiar broadcasting crew for Lions fans, albeit one we haven’t seen in a while.

FOX Sports revealed their broadcasting assignments for Week 13, and the Lions vs. Jaguars predictably drew their non-featured status. It will be Chris Myers on play-by-play and Robert Smith providing color commentary for Sunday’s game. Jen Hale will be the sideline reporter.

Myers has had some issues in broadcasting some Lions games in the past, though he has not been on the mic for any Lions games in 2022 so far.

HBCU Legacy Bowl players to know

HBCU Legacy Bowl Studs #Browns

The HBCU Legacy Bowl kicks off this Saturday at 3:00 P.M., but much like with the Senior Bowl, the practices are much more important than the game itself. We briefly discussed a few HBCU prospects to monitor from the HBCU combine and the Legacy Bowl and their practices give us a much larger taste of the talent.

I appreciate any game that provides a closer look to smaller school guys and there are a few prospects that would look good in Cleveland. Full disclosure, I am not in New Orleans, but I wanted to highlight the three names that have been most highly celebrated for their efforts so far this week. Two of these names are familiar faces, but the third will surprise:

FOX broadcast of Lions-Packers game repeatedly fumbled

It was not an NFL-quality broadcast

It was not a good day for the Detroit Lions defense in Green Bay in Week 2. They were not the only ones who did not have their “A” game in Lambeau Field.

The FOX broadcast crew also had a rough afternoon. It looked like amateur hour from the production truck.

On-screen graphics showed “Corey Undley” as the defensive coordinator. That’s Cory Undlin. Not content with screwing that side of the ball up, another graphic had “Farrell Bevell” — not Darrell — as the Lions’ offensive coordinator. Tight end T.J. Hockenson became D.J. somehow on yet another graphic flub.

Then there was Chris Myers in the booth. The veteran play-by-play man either did zero game prep or forgot how to pronounce several different names throughout the game. Among them (I’ll do my best phonetic spellings here):

  • “Jalen Ta-Vee” for Jahlani Tavai
  • “Armani Oreeyoee” for Amani Oruwariye
  • “Uday Al-BOO-shay” for Oday Aboushi
  • “Gary” instead of Za’Darius Smith when referring to the Packers EDGE

The artificial crowd noise also had little connection with the reality of what was happening in the empty stadium. The “fans” booed when the Packers made a nice stop, but cheered loudly for an incomplete Aaron Rodgers pass. There were loud boos audible during the second-half kickoff, coming across like a random button push from the production truck.
