Texans have nothing to lose re-signing WR Chris Moore

The Houston Texans would have nothing to lose if they brought back receiver Chris Moore, who is set to hit free agency.

Chris Moore had a career year.

The former Baltimore Ravens 2016 fourth-round pick caught 48 passes for 548 yards and two touchdowns through 16 games, seven of which he started for the Houston Texans. Only in 2017 did Moore catch more touchdown passes with three.

It wasn’t like Moore was simply benefiting from the coverages receivers Brandin Cooks and Nico Collins drew; instead Moore was the No. 1 wideout for the game as both were typically injured. In Moore’s biggest game — Week 14 at the Dallas Cowboys — both Collins and Cooks were out. Moore caught 11 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown in the 27-23 loss at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Moore signed a one-year contract in the 2022 offseason worth $1.87 million. The 6-1, 200-pound wideout is no stranger to one-year deals with Houston as he signed one when joining the team in 2021.

According to Field Yates from ESPN, the Texans will re-sign Moore in the offseason.

Will they re-sign wide receiver Chris Moore? Yes. The Texans have the cap space to keep pretty much any of their free agents, and Moore should stick around. The receiver room is likely to experience plenty of change, but Moore deserves credit for the way he stepped up. The cost won’t be prohibitive, and Moore caught 48 passes for 548 yards in 2022.

Bringing back Moore would be beneficial for the receiver room as the former Cincinnati Bearcat has proven to be a reliable veteran, not just for young receivers to lean upon, but also for quarterbacks to count on when availability issues hit the receiving corps.

Houston will also need a veteran they can rely on if they decide to move on from Cooks, who may seek a trade in the offseason as he is done with rebuilds. If Houston is cultivating Collins, a healthy and recovered John Metchie, and a top-100 pick rookie into a young receiving corps, it will bring more security if Moore can be a part of that cohesion.

Tiger of the Game: Jaylin Williams earns top honor after significant performance at LSU

Williams sweeps Tiger of the Game votes after a 14-point, seven-rebound night in Baton Rouge.

The No. 16 Auburn Tigers earned its fourth-straight win on Wednesday night, defeating LSU, 67-49 at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge.

Outside of a brief scare in the second half, Auburn stayed in control for most of the game by leading for 39:30 of game time. [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag]’s squad also made the most out of its possessions by scoring on 49.2% of its possessions, as opposed to LSU, who scored on 36.5% of its chances.

Many players contributed to Auburn’s win, including [autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Allen Flanigan[/autotag]. Green scored 14 points, grabbed four rebounds, and recorded four assists. Flanigan, who started his second straight game in place of injured [autotag]Chris Moore[/autotag], scored eight points and secured seven rebounds.

It was [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag], however, that made the biggest impact, as he earned the most votes for “Tiger of the Game.”

What made his performance so special? Here’s a look at why writers Taylor JonesJ.D. McCarthy, and River Wells, as well as Auburn fans, chose Williams as the “Tiger of the Game” following Auburn’s road win over LSU on Wednesday night.

Instant Analysis: Auburn crushes LSU for fourth-straight win

Auburn won its fourth-straight game on Wednesday by staying in control for a majority of the game.

The No. 16 Auburn Tigers earned its’ fourth straight win by dominating Wednesday’s game in Baton Rouge from wire-to-wire.

Auburn held a comfortable lead for most of the game by shooting well and by forcing LSU to shoot poorly, which lead to a 67-49 win at The Pete Maravich Assembly Center. Auburn shot 44% from the field while LSU could only muster 32%.

The only scare that Auburn suffered in the game was LSU’s hot start to the second half. The visiting Tigers led LSU, 32-21 at halftime, and the Bayou Bengals trimmed Auburn’s lead to just two points with 15:50 remaining in regulation. After a timeout, Auburn went on to outscore LSU 33-17 from that point to run away with the win.

[autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] each scored 14 points for Auburn in the win, Williams pulled down seven rebounds and blocked three shots. [autotag]Allen Flanigan[/autotag] scored eight points and secured seven boards in his second-straight start, filling in for injured [autotag]Chris Moore[/autotag].

Auburn got off to a much-needed hot start in Wednesday’s game. [autotag]Zep Jasper[/autotag] connected on the opening bucket of the night by nailing a three-pointer with 19:47 remaining in the first half to put Auburn ahead, 3-0. Auburn kept its’ hot streak alive by outscoring LSU, 11-5 through the first media timeout. LSU’s K.J. Williams scored all five points, while the team shot 22% through the game’s first five minutes.

LSU’s poor shooting continued into the final media timeout of the half as they only connected on 17% of its’ shots to that point. Auburn went on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 25-13 with 2:56 remaining in the half. Auburn also held LSU scoreless for over six minutes during the stretch.

LSU outscored Auburn 8-7 over the final 2:39, but Auburn would carry the 32-21 lead into the locker room.

After trailing by 11 points at halftime, LSU outscored Auburn 14-7 at the first media timeout of the second half to cut Auburn’s lead to 39-35. Adam Miller and Justice Williams combined to score 10 points in LSU’s second-half start.

The run would be short-lived, however, as a Jasper  jump shot would  kickstart an Auburn 20-7 run in a span of 7:16 to give Auburn the 59-42 lead with 7:19 remaining in the game.

Auburn continues its two-game road trip on Saturday when they visit South Carolina. Tipoff from Colonial Life Arena in Columbia is set for 2:30 p.m. CT and can be seen live on SEC Network.

Instant Analysis: Tigers down Mississippi State, wins third straight game

Jaylin Williams scores a season-high 21 points in Auburn’s win over Mississippi State on Saturday night.

Auburn Basketball’s hot streak continued on Saturday with a key SEC win against Mississippi State.

The No. 22 Tigers, led by a monster effort from [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag], earned its third straight win by defeating Mississippi State, 69-63 Saturday evening at Neville Arena.

Williams posted a season-best 21 points for the Tigers, which was kickstarted by a hot first half where he scored 13 of the team’s first 15 points of the contest. [autotag]Allen Flanigan[/autotag] stepped up for Auburn in the absence of [autotag]Chris Moore[/autotag], who was not available to play due to the shoulder injury he suffered last Tuesday at Ole Miss by scoring 10 points and pulling down seven rebounds.

Williams put Auburn in the scoring column to begin the game with a three-pointer to put the Tigers ahead, 3-2 with 18:20 remaining in the half. He would also lead the team in points with six as Auburn took an 8-4 lead into the under-15 media timeout. The Tigers opened the game by shooting 42.9% through the first five minutes of the contest.

Auburn led by as many as 10 points in the first half before the Bulldogs began a run to cut the Tigers’ lead to one possession. State’s Tolu Smith nailed a three-pointer with 4:04 remaining in the half to trim Auburn’s lead to 25-22. Williams would score a second-chance bucket with 0:34 remaining to snap a scoreless streak that lasted over five-and-a-half minutes, then Flanigan hit a three-pointer as time expired to give Auburn the 30-22 halftime lead.

The first half ended with a bit of an oddity, as neither team paid a visit to the free throw line. Auburn committed five personal fouls to Mississippi State’s three. The Tigers connected on six three-pointers, while the Bulldogs held the advantage in the paint with 22.

Much like the first half, Auburn jumped out to a 13-point lead to open the second half. Williams scored six of the Tigers’ first 15 points of the half to give his team the 45-32 lead with 13:12 remaining in regulation.

Mississippi State closed the gap to as little as four points late in the game to cut Auburn’s lead to 57-53 with 2:34 remaining in the contest, but [autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag] would rattle off nine straight points to give Auburn a more comfortable 66-57 lead with 1:03 to go.

Three players reached double figures in points. Outside of Williams’ 21-point night, Green finished with 17, and Flanigan scored 10. [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag]’s double-double streak concluded Saturday, he ended the game with six points and four rebounds. The Tigers shot 43.6% from the field, as opposed to the Bulldogs’ 37% effort. Auburn did not allow Mississippi State to connect on a three-pointer in the game, going 0-18.

Auburn travels to LSU Wednesday for its’ next SEC game. The Bayou Bengals lost their fourth straight game on Saturday, falling to No. 4 Alabama, 106-66 in Tuscaloosa. Tipoff from Baton Rouge is set for 6 p.m. CT.

Auburn vs. Mississippi State: Stream, injury report, broadcast info for Saturday’s game at Neville Arena

The No. 22 Tigers go for their third consecutive win Saturday night at Neville Arena against Mississippi State.

Auburn Basketball plays Mississippi State on Saturday, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

The No. 22 Auburn Tigers look to continue their winning streak on Saturday night when they host Mississippi State at Neville Arena in Auburn.

After suffering a discouraging loss to Georgia on Jan. 4 in Athens, the Tigers have won two consecutive games. In that stretch, Auburn defeated then-No. 13 Arkansas and most recently dominated the second half of their win over Ole Miss. Auburn returns home on Saturday to face what head coach [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] expects to be a physical game.

“They are really athletic. They are really physical. They play really hard,”  Pearl said Friday. “They are well coached and they are multiple defensive–man, zone, they will press. They are ranked really high in steals.”

The Bulldogs opened the season with an 11-0 record, but have since fallen to 1-3 in SEC play. Pearl respects Mississippi State’s tenacity and says that his team needs to limit their opportunities.

“At times offense has been a challenge for us so for us to continue to keep our turnovers down if we can, and play better on our drop-back defense, and keep these guys off the boards,” Pearl said. “I think they are like 13th nationally in offensive rebounding–they just fly to the boards.”

One player to keep an eye on ahead of Saturday’s game is forward [autotag]Chris Moore[/autotag]. Moore, who left Tuesday’s game at Ole Miss early due to a shoulder injury, did not practice Friday. If he were to not play Saturday, expect [autotag]Allen Flanigan[/autotag] to receive more playing time.

Below is every piece of key information that you need to know ahead of Auburn’s game against Mississippi State including a how-to-watch guide, injury report, and a projected starting five.

Saturday’s game is ‘personal’ for Arkansas natives Flanigan, Moore

Allen Flanigan and Chris Moore would love nothing more than to earn a win over their home-state program.

The No. 20 Auburn Tigers welcome the No. 13 Arkansas Razorbacks to Neville Arena on Saturday and will need little motivation to play well and earn a victory.

Not only will Auburn need to rebound from its poor showing in the 76-64 loss to Georgia on Wednesday, but will look to get revenge on Arkansas after the Razorbacks took down the then-No. 1 Tigers in Fayetteville last season.

After forcing overtime, Arkansas took advantage of Auburn’s fouls by scoring 11 of its’ 14 points in the period to win, 80-76. Sure, the loss stings the current players on the roster, but for two Tigers who hail from the Natural State, it hits home a little harder.

Senior [autotag]Allen Flanigan[/autotag] (Little Rock) and junior [autotag]Chris Moore[/autotag] (West Memphis) spoke with the media ahead of Saturday’s key SEC game, where they shared their personal thoughts towards the Razorbacks.

Moore shared his experience in choosing Auburn over the home-state Razorbacks as a member of the 2020 recruiting cycle and says that he would enjoy nothing more than taking down Arkansas on Saturday.

“For me, it’s also personal,” Moore said Friday. “The day I committed to Auburn the fan base went crazy on me for not going. They said I was disloyal to the state so you know just beating them for the first time in, like, three years would be amazing. It would definitely make my New Year’s.”

From a recruiting standpoint, Flanigan shared a different experience.

“For me it is personal, just being from Little Rock and them offering another kid over me so I never got the offer from my home state, even though I was the No. 1 player in the state and stuff,” Flanigan said.

Sure, both Arkansas natives want to win Saturday’s game for unique reasons, but how are they preparing? Moore says that its’ all about perspective.

“We put in countless hours in the gym, shooting shots and everything. Just having the confidence and realizing that we’re that same player shooting in the gym late at night by ourselves when we shoot in the game,” Moore said. “When we get that mindset, I feel like we’ll start making a lot more shots.”

Auburn hosts Arkansas on Saturday at Neville Arena. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CT, and can be seen live on SEC Network.

Texans WR coach Ben McDaniels offers explanation for the rise of Chris Moore

Chris Moore has been there when the Houston Texans have needed him, and WR coach Ben McDaniels knows why.

Chris Moore was there when the Houston Texans needed him.

The former Baltimore Ravens 2016 fourth-round receiver had big games when the Texans were down two of their top wideouts in Weeks 9, 14, and 15 when Brandin Cooks and Nico Collins missed with injuries. Moore delivered with four catches for 43 yards and a touchdown, 10 catches for 124 yards, and four grabs for 42 yards respectively.

Moore may have burst onto the scene for even the most observant Clutch City sports fan, but receivers coach and pass game coordinator Ben McDaniels knows the real reason why the seven-year pro has had such success.

“I’d probably say consistency,” McDaniels said. “It’s not a sexy answer but, consistency. I think he’s smart. He’s versatile. He’s been able to play in different spots for us whenever that is we needed him. We’ve needed him more recently than previous. He’s stepped into those roles and done a great job and made the most of his opportunities, which is what I expect from him.”

By far Moore is having the best year of his career with 43 catches for 505 yards and two touchdowns. The only season where Moore had more touchdown catches was in 2017 when he hauled in three scoring grabs for the Ravens. Moore’s five starts through 14 games are also a new career high.

“He’s smart and he’s tough,” said McDaniels. “He’s got a lot of football player to him, and in his opportunities recently, he’s shown that.”

Cooks returned to the lineup in Week 16 against the Tennessee Titans, and the Texans prevailed 19-14 at Nissan Stadium to improve their record to 2-12-1. Collins remains on injured reserve with a foot injury, which means Moore will have another opportunity to make a start against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 17 at NRG Stadium.
