Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann ‘not going to Notre Dame’

Scratch one name off the list.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel recently gave his list of potential names to fill Notre Dame’s coaching vacancy. One of those names was Chris Holtmann of Ohio State, who recently had a streak of 20-win seasons in Columbus come to an end. You can scratch him off that list because he told the Columbus Dispatch that he’s not going anywhere. Specifically pertaining to the Irish job, he said this:

“I’m not going to Notre Dame. I stand by what I publicly said. I’m committed to being here.”

As the Dispatch story notes, Holtmann is a year removed from signing a contract extension that keeps with the Buckeyes through the 2027-28 season. He currently has a $2.5 million buyout, and we have no idea how much Notre Dame is willing to buy out a coach if necessary. The athletic department is just coming off a misinformation fiasco with its offensive coordinator hire for the football program, so it better choose wisely in the event of a buyout.

Thoughts about Ohio State basketball’s future as it enters the offseason

Some things to ponder as Ohio State basketball turns the page to next year. #GoBucks

It is official. [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] basketball will not play in a postseason tournament. Head coach [autotag]Chris Holtmann[/autotag] hinted even before the brackets were revealed that the Buckeyes might skip whatever tournament wanted them due to injury concerns.

That is exactly what happened. The Buckeyes have entered their offseason after what many have viewed as a disappointing 16-19 campaign.

That might not be correct. I look at what next year could look like, areas the returning players need to improve on, and a move that could make this team a big-time contender next year. Find out below my thoughts on this very important offseason for the Ohio State basketball program.

Pete Thamel lists four coaches who could fill Notre Dame opening

Would you like one of these coaches?

Since [autotag]Mike Brey[/autotag] announced his intention to leave Notre Dame in January, various names have floated as his replacement. Our own Nick Shepkowski made his own list of candidates in the immediate aftermath of Brey’s announcement. While it’s nice to keep all options open, it appears the list is starting to narrow down. At least that’s what ESPN’s Pete Thamel said he believes during the most recent episode of College GameDay:

For all we know, this list could be completely bogus with none of the four landing the job. But when you cover college basketball for a living, you’re bound to hear a few whispers about who the next coach might be. For argument’s sake, let’s pretend this list is legitimate and that the search indeed will come down to these four. Then, we can debate as to who would be the best candidate for the Irish for the long haul:

Thoughts on Ohio State basketball’s loss to Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals

The fun run comes to an end #GoBucks

The magical run for [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] basketball is over, as Purdue defeated the Buckeyes in the [autotag]Big Ten Tournament[/autotag] semifinals 80-66.

It was an exhilarating three days prior, as the Buckeyes became the first No. 13 seed to make it this far. Even though the team finished with a 16-19 record, there are still some very good aspects of this season that head coach [autotag]Chris Holtmann[/autotag] can lean upon for next year starting with his freshman that grew up during the season.

There was some good to come from this game and conference tournament, and here are my thoughts about the season-ending loss for Ohio State basketball.

WATCH: Tom Izzo praises Ohio State and job Chris Holtmann has done, is a ‘fun team to watch’

Tom Izzo is a big Chris Holtmann believer. #GoBucks

Ohio State is putting the world on notice that it isn’t dead. There’s still a long way to go for the Buckeyes to knock the door down but after beating Michigan State in a Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal, there’s now a chance to make an even bigger statement against Purdue on Saturday.

The Buckeyes have improved greatly over the last couple of weeks, and we’re now seeing the fruits of the laborious process of bringing a young team along. Head coach Chris Holtmann has taken a lot of heat this season with the disappointing season, but things look much brighter for the future after what we’ve all witnessed during this late-season run.

You can consider Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo as a believer in what Holtmann has done and said that and more in his postgame press conference after the loss to the Buckeyes Friday. He originally came to the defense of Holtmann after the bad loss in an even worse stretch in Columbus, and he spent some considerable time doubling down on that after the game Friday.

In case you missed any of it, his comments are entertaining, insightful, and a little rebellious. Check out everything he and the Michigan State players said about Ohio State after the game thanks to the Spartan Mag YouTube channel.

Ohio State will now try to keep things rolling, but it’ll be even tougher against No. 1 seed Purdue on Saturday afternoon.

Thoughts on Ohio State basketball’s Big Ten Tournament win over Michigan State

One, Two, Three in Chicago #GoBucks

The unthinkable has happened, [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] basketball has won yet another game in the [autotag]Big Ten Tournament[/autotag], this time knocking off No. 4 Michigan State 68-58 in the quarterfinals.

Not many thought the Buckeyes would win today, or even make it this far, but head coach [autotag]Chris Holtmann[/autotag] has this squad peaking over the course of these last two weeks.

It’s a bit unfortunate how this has transpired but regardless of the timing, it has been a three-game stretch to remember for the Buckeyes.

Here are my thoughts about yet another win in the conference tournament, that propels Ohio State into the semifinals and a date against top-seeded Purdue Saturday.

Breaking: Ohio State star freshman out against Michigan State

Not great news #GoBucks

As Ohio State prepares to take on Michigan State on day 3 of the Big Ten Tournament, it received some bad news.

Star freshman [autotag]Brice Sensabaugh[/autotag] has been ruled out of the game due to knee soreness. It is a big blow for head coach [autotag]Chris Holtmann[/autotag] and his Buckeyes, as they are going to have to replace their leading scorer (16.3 points) who also contributed 5.4 rebounds with 1.2 assists per game.

We do not know who will get the nod to take Sensabaugh’s spot in the starting lineup but one could guess it will be [autotag]Sean McNeil[/autotag] as he started multiple games throughout the season.

The Buckeyes and Spartans tip off at 2:30 p.m. ET from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.

Thoughts on Ohio State’s Round 2 win over Iowa in the Big Ten Tournament

The Buckeyes don’t want to go home #GoBucks

The unthinkable happened once again, [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] advances in the [autotag]Big Ten Tournament[/autotag] as the No. 13 seed, defeating Iowa 73-69.

Head coach [autotag]Chris Holtmann[/autotag]’s team played a very good game from start to finish, even though the Hawkeyes kept matching it and wouldn’t go away. The win, the 15th of the season, keeps the Buckeyes alive in the conference tournament, with Michigan State waiting for them Friday.

There was a lot to like about how Ohio State played today, but some of its issues reared their ugly heads once again and almost sent the Buckeyes back to Columbus. Find out my thoughts as OSU survives and advances in the Big Ten Tournament.

Thoughts on Ohio State’s win over Wisconsin in the Big Ten Tournament

It got close late but the Buckeyes survive and advance. What were your thoughts #GoBucks

The [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] basketball team looked like it was going to cruise to a win over Wisconsin in the first round of the [autotag]Big Ten tournament[/autotag], but the Badgers didn’t roll over easily.

They mounted a comeback bid that scared most Buckeye fans, but OSU pulled out the win 65-57.

Head coach [autotag]Chris Holtmann[/autotag] has to be happy with his team’s effort and resilience, knowing that playing spoiler was at stake tonight. The Buckeyes didn’t let in when the Badgers made it a game and now Wisconsin will have to wait until Selection Sunday to find out its fate.

There was plenty to like and some not in tonight’s Buckeye win. Here are my thoughts on the game.

Thoughts following Ohio State’s regular season ending loss at Michigan State

What did you think about this Ohio State loss? #GoBucks

The regular season no one expected from [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] basketball is finally over with today’s loss to Michigan State, 84-78.

The loss ended the Buckeyes modest two-game winning streak and put another negative mark on this season’s 13-18 record. This will be head coach [autotag]Chris Holtmann[/autotag]’s first year as the OSU head coach that will not result in a 20 win season, with the exception of the 2020 campaign.

It was another disappointing game for the Buckeyes, one where the could have ended with a better result if they did a few things better over the course of the game. Find out my thoughts following another Ohio State loss.
