Curtis Blaydes sees Stipe Miocic as viable next option after UFC on ESPN 33: ‘I’m on his level’

Following his UFC on ESPN 33 win, Curtis Blaydes sees Stipe Miocic as a possible next foe – and the two have crossed paths before.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – [autotag]Curtis Blaydes[/autotag] is back to his finishing ways – and he thinks he’s ready for the next step up.

At UFC on ESPN 33, Blaydes (16-3 MMA, 11-3 UFC) knocked fellow heavyweight contender [autotag]Chris Daukaus[/autotag] (12-5 MMA, 4-2 UFC) unconscious in Round 2 and cemented his spot at the top of the division. The win was big, and Blaydes thinks it likely earned him a shot at one of the heavyweight weight class’ top dogs.

“A win over (Ciryl) Gane, who was on a hot streak, who was just in a title fight, a win over him should put me as the next title contender – the same thing with Stipe (Miocic),” Blaydes told MMA Junkie at a post-fight news conference. “He’s the G.O.A.T., in my opinion. He’s the G.O.A.T. of this heavyweight division. He honestly deserved a rematch a while ago. But if he’s willing to risk it against me, and I beat him, that’s the same thing. A title shot for me would be the same thing after beating Gane or Stipe.”

Blaydes has history with Miocic – but not in a heated, rivalry-heavy way. Almost a decade ago, Blaydes, a young rising fighter in the professional ranks, trained with established UFC name Miocic. However, a lot has happened since then that could make things interesting, according to Blaydes.

“We worked out together, years ago when I was not very good,” Blaydes said. “He destroyed me every sparring. I don’t have no awesome sparring stories. He was levels and levels above me. I helped him get ready for Gonzaga. That was back in 2012. I had just begun my amateur career in that year.

“… I respect him, but I believe I’m on his level. I believe I can take him down. I know I can take him down because I did take him down. But I also believe, if we get in a striking battle, I can strike with him. I’ve got the footwork. I’ve got the acumen. I believe in my coaches. I know I can hang with anybody on the feet.”

UFC on ESPN 33 took place Saturday at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Check out Blaydes’ full post-fight news conference in the video above.

UFC on ESPN 33 results: Curtis Blaydes finishes Chris Daukaus, calls for title shot

Curtis Blaydes eschewed wrestling Saturday. Instead, he used his standup game to put away Chris Daukaus, then called for a title shot.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – [autotag]Curtis Blaydes[/autotag] eschewed wrestling Saturday. Instead, he used his standup game to put away [autotag]Chris Daukaus[/autotag], then called for a title shot – or a fight with a former champion.

After a patient first round on the feet, Blaydes (16-3 MMA, 11-3 UFC) needed just 17 seconds in the second round to put Daukaus (12-5 MMA, 4-2 UFC) away after a big right hand and follow-up strikes on the canvas in the UFC on ESPN 33 main event at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

Afterward, Blaydes said he’d like a title shot. But when told former heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic was in the crowd, he said he may have to go through him to get one – and would welcome the opportunity.

Blaydes pumped an early jab, and Daukaus fired a right hand. He backed Blaydes up with a left seconds later. Blaydes threw a low kick, then another and slipped aside from a Daukaus punch. Then he landed a left that popped Daukaus’ head back. Daukaus took a few ticks, then fired back, but Blaydes held the center of the cage.

Midway through the round, they traded briefly, but didn’t get into an all-out slugfest. Blaydes kicked low again, then tried the other leg for good measure. Daukaus backed Blaydes up with a couple punches and a kick with a minute left, but didn’t appear to do much damage. With 12 seconds left, Blaydes caught Daukaus in the eye, but he didn’t need long to recover before the horn.

In the second, it didn’t take Blaydes long at all to get his work done. At the same time as Daukaus was throwing a right hand, Blaydes drilled him with a huge right of his own. Daukaus hit the canvas immediately, and Blaydes was on top of him to finish the fight with punches and short elbows.

UFC on ESPN 33 Blaydes vs. Daukaus: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Records: Blaydes (15-3-0) | Daukaus (12-4-0)

Fight result (2-way line or money line)

Blaydes (-475) is an overwhelming favorite in this main event match, but you can’t risk nearly five times your potential return.

The heavy favorite has a four-inch reach advantage, and he holds a 16-pound advantage, too. While Daukaus has easily been the more frequent puncher in his UFC career, going for 7.71 significant strikes landed per minute, Blaydes is the more well-rounded fighter with a strong ground game when needed.

Daukaus has been involved in plenty of knockouts so BLAYDES BY TKO/KO (-127) for the method of victory is the much better value here.

Over/Under (O/U)

There is very little chance this fight needs the judges to get involved, but No (-320): Fight to go the distance is not a good value with a risk of more than three times your potential return.

I like a three-round block for the better value. Take BLAYDES TO WIN IN ROUND 2 (+460), BLAYDES TO WIN IN ROUND 3 (+750) and BLAYDES TO WIN IN ROUND 4 (+1100). If he wins in Rounds 2-4, you’ll lose two of the ends but still be well ahead.
