Alabama to be without LB Drew Sanders for Texas A&M

Another injury blow for Alabama’s defense.

When Chris Allen went down with an injury, Nick Saban had to turn to youth at the fourth linebacker position. Sophomore Drew Sanders stepped in and was performing nicely.

Now, another replacement is going to be needed as Sanders is going to be missing some time thanks to an injury.

“He has a hand injury,” Saban said. “It required surgery. It was a little, maybe, worse than we thought. So he’s gonna be game-to-game for a few weeks, so we’ll just have to see how it goes.”

Sanders was able to play against Ole Miss, recording five tackles and two quarterback hurries. He was spotted with a cast on Saturday, mainly around his right thumb.

Now, Alabama will be moving onto the third-string SAM. True freshman and former five-star Dallas Turner or redshirt freshman and former five-star Chris Braswell are expected to take over.

“They don’t have a lot of experience,” Saban said. “That’s two starters at the same position that we’ve lost. But Dallas Turner is a good young player, and he’s probably gonna get more opportunity, as well as Chris Braswell, at that position, and those guys have played some. But they’re obviously gonna get more opportunity now.”

Between Turner and Braswell, the two have combined for 12 tackles this season. They’ll be thrown into the ring at College Station, needing to perform in a big way for Alabama.

It’s easy to say “just throw the next five-star guy out there,” and on paper, this is true. But playing an underclassman who has little experience, even in practice, is a different ball game.

Both players will have to adapt quickly against Texas A&M’s offensive before Sanders is back in the lineup in a few weeks.

Alabama football countdown: 41 days until kickoff

We are only 41 days away from ALABAMA FOOTBALL!!

The return of college football is quickly approaching, folks. After yet another national championship winning season, Nick Saban and company will be looking for a repeat performance in 2021.

Despite key losses, the Crimson Tide is well positioned to do just that.

The opening week matchup is against the Miami Hurricanes in Atlanta, Ga. set for Sept. 4. And with it now being July 25, we are now only 41 days away from the start of the season!

Sophomore outside linebacker Chris Braswell will once again wear the No. 41 for Alabama. The former five-star talent didn’t make an immediate impact in Tuscaloosa, but many are expecting a sizable leap to at least a relied on contributor in Year 2.

At some point, Braswell should strive to become as impactful — or maybe even more impactful — than another former outside linebacker who wore the No. 41, Courtney Upshaw.

After a successful career in Tuscaloosa from 2009-12, the Eufaula, Ala. product became an early second-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens during the 2012 NFL draft. From there, Upshaw helped them become a Super Bowl winner.

Alabama football countdown: 41 days until kickoff

We are back to being 41 days away from Alabama’s opening kickoff on Sept. 26. The opponent hasn’t been determined yet.

There has been a lot of uncertainty surrounding college football over the last couple of weeks, but as of right now, the season still looks like it’s a go for the SEC, ACC and Big 12.

So, what does that mean? It means that we can continue to Countdown to Kickoff en route to the Crimson Tide — and the rest of the SEC — getting things underway on Sept. 26.

With it now being Aug. 16, we are officially 41 days away from the start!

Five-star true freshman Chris Braswell, an outside linebacker from Baltimore (Md.), will wear the No. 41 for Alabama this upcoming season.

The last notable player to wear the number, however, is another edge player: former Tide standout Courtney Upshaw. After a successful career in Tuscaloosa, Upshaw ended up being a second-round pick to the Baltimore Ravens before winning a Super Bowl and spending time with the Atlanta Falcons (2016-17) and New York Jets (2018).

While they’re different players, the Alabama coaching staff has to be hoping that Braswell can become as impactful — or maybe more impactful — as Upshaw during his time at Alabama.

Alabama football countdown: 41 days until kickoff

We are only 41 days from Alabama football kicking off its season. With the cancelled USC game, we’re just not sure who the opponent with be.

Alabama’s opening week game against the USC Trojans at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, has been cancelled after the Pac-12 announced its teams would play a conference-only schedule in 2020.

Yes, that was unfortunate news, and, yes, that means the Crimson Tide is looking for a new opponent to open its season on Sept. 5, but, as of right now, that is still the target date to open the season. Until that changes, we’ll continue the countdown to kickoff.

With it now being July 26, we are officially 41 days away from the start!

Alabama player snapshot: No. 41 Chris Braswell

Freshman linebacker Chris Braswell is the next man up on Alabama football’s player snapshot, which highlights each scholarship player.

As we continue through the offseason, Roll Tide Wire has decided to bring fans a quick snapshot of each scholarship player listed on Alabama’s 2020 football roster.

Each day, we’ll release two player profiles giving fans a glimpse into the players who will be available this upcoming season. Whether that’s size, classification, hometowns or recruiting rankings coming out of high school, we’ve got you covered.

Also included in each article is a quick recap letting you know what to expect from that player for the upcoming 2020 season and beyond.

Next up on the list is freshman outside linebacker Chris Braswell out of Baltimore (Md.).

Height: 6-3 / Weight: 220

Class: Freshman

Hometown: Baltimore (Md.)

High School: St. Frances Academy

HS ranking (247Sports): 5-star / No. 19 overall / No. 2 WDE / No. 2 MD

HS ranking (Rivals): 5-star / No. 24 overall / No. 2 OLB / No. 2 MD

Analysis: Alabama’s 2020 recruiting class was headlined by four high-quality edge players, which includes five-star phenom Chris Braswell out of Maryland.

At 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, Braswell will need to add significant weight and functional strength if he wants to be anything more than a situational player in Year 1, but even if that doesn’t happen, he can still add value due to his elite burst off the snap and ability to turn the corner.

There’s a lot to like about Braswell, and he’ll certainly be a guy who fans should become familiar with in the near future. With Terrell Lewis and Anfernee Jennings off the NFL, there will be plenty of opportunities for the former St. Frances Academy standout — and others — to earn reps early.

In this episode, Lamb and Brett Hudson continue on with the pre-spring position breakdown for the Alabama Crimson Tide, with the edge players/outside linebackers up next on the list.

National Signing Day has come and gone, and Alabama’s 2020 recruiting class if officially set. There were 25 total members (26, if you count North Carolina grad transfer tight end Carl Tucker) with talent across the board.

In order for fans to get to know the Crimson Tide’s newest players, we have laid out a “get to know them” article for each member.

Next up on the list is five-star weakside defensive end Chris Braswell

Chris Braswell, Edge Player

Hometown: Baltimore (Md.)

High school: St. Francis Academy

Size: 6-3, 220 (6-3, 220 on official Alabama roster)

247Sports composite ranking: 5-star / No. 19 overall / No. 2 WDE

247Sports ranking: 4-star / No. 39 overall / No. 2 WDE

Rivals ranking: 5-star / No. 24 overall / No. 2 WDE

ESPN ranking: 5-star / 91 overall grade / No. 3 DE

Commitment date: Nov. 25, 2018

Signing date: Dec. 18, 2019

Where does he fit in? According to all the major recruiting services, Braswell is listed as a weakside defensive end, but he should slot into one of the outside linebacker positions (Sam or Jack) for the Crimson Tide.

Like with the other edge players in Alabama’s 2020 class, the 6-foot-3, 220-pound linebacker will need to add weight and play strength during the offseason. The talent is undeniable, however.

There should also be plenty of opportunities for Braswell to earn a significant role in Year 1.

Last year’s two starters, Anfernee Jennings and Terrell Lewis, are off to the NFL while one of the expected replacements, Eyabi Anoma, transferred prior to the 2019 season.

There are still a few options on the roster at edge (Christopher Allen, Jarez Parks, King Mwikuta and Kevin Harris II, to name a few), but it’s also a certainly that Alabama will need at least one or two of the first-year guys to emerge as viable depth.

Braswell has the ability to be one of those players.
