Midseason 2019-20 Western Conference future odds, picks and best bets

Analyzing the NHL future odds to win the 2019-20 Western Conference, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

With the NHL All-Star weekend and bye weeks in the rear-view mirror and the league’s Feb. 24 trade deadline nearing, it’s a good time to check in on the NHL futures market. Let’s check in on a couple favorites and a couple longshots on the board for winning the Western Conference.

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated Monday at 11 p.m. ET.

2019-20 Western Conference favorites

St. Louis Blues (+360)

The defending Stanley Cup champions don’t need a miraculous second-half turnaround to vault into spring-time bracket play this year. St. Louis is leading the tough Central Division and should be in position for a slew of home games on the Western Conference side of the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Blues are a deep team, and with D Alex Pietrangelo leading the way, the St. Louis power play has been clicking along at a 24.4% success rate. The wild card with the Blues is star RW Vladimir Tarasenko. The steady winger has been out since having shoulder surgery in late October. He could return late in the regular season or just in time for the playoffs. That could effectively make him the best acquisition any contender could be making for the stretch run.

Colorado Avalanche (+400)

Nathan MacKinnon and company are leading the Western Conference with 3.64 goals per game. Over the last couple months, Colorado has overtaken St. Louis on the analytics side – the puck-possession and shot-position numbers underpinning goals for, goals against, wins and losses.

The Avs’ power play would figure to have some upside. Colorado ranks 22nd in the NHL with an 18.9% conversion rate. Something close to the 22% (seventh) the team posted last season would be tremendously impactful.

Of all the contenders, the Avalanche have the most available salary cap space, too. That could mean a significant add at the trade deadline. Some veteran blue-line help would make sense. Of the top four or five favorites in the West, Colorado’s +400 price has the best value.

2019-20 Western Conference longshots

Vancouver Canucks goaltender Jacob Markstrom. (Photo credit: Neville E. Guard – USA TODAY Sports)

Vancouver Canucks (+1100)

The Canucks are solidly in the playoff picture, and they’re a couple clicks south of their Pythagorean expectation (comparing goals against goals allowed to predict a won-loss record).

Goaltender Jacob Markstrom has been sharp for long stretches and can be a sneaky-good weapon come playoff time. Despite having a lot of young players in key slots, the team as a whole fits that same M.O. If Vancouver can put it all together more consistently, the makings of a team that can make a run are there. GM Jim Benning may not have many attractive draft picks to play with when it comes to trade talks, so the current squad might not get much of a boost from the outside.

Chicago Blackhawks (+2200)

The Chicago Blackhawks are a fun bad-defense-good-goaltending mix of youth and seasoned vets which is surging offensively (3.70 GPG since Dec. 18).  Playing in a balanced, less top-heavy conference, the ‘Hawks could turn out to be a fun bag of mystery fireworks at their current outsider-looking-in price.

How to Watch NHL All-Star Skills Competition, NHL Live Stream, Schedule, TV Channel, Start Time

Watch NHL All-Star Skills Competition Live Online.

No one quite captures the spirit of All-Star events like the NHL does with its annual Skills Competitions. This year is no different as the NHL added two brand new events to spice up the evening in St. Louis. The top stars of the NHL and some from the best of women’s hockey in North America will be on full display in this must-see night.

[protected-iframe id=”59ebe181bd95a408ffd30d712f2d1f25-58289342-150719707″ info=”https://fubo-preview.global.ssl.fastly.net/lp/preview/index-lite.html?params=irad%3D540143%26irmp%3D1205322%26pack%3Dfubotv-basic&page_slug=NBCSN” style=”max-width: 640px;” width = “100%”]

NHL All-Star Skills Competition

  • When: Saturday, January 24
  • Time: 8:00 p.m. ET
  • TV: NBCSN
  • Live Stream: fuboTV (watch for free)

In total, there will be six events, with it all kicking off with the Fastest Skater competition. In this event, eight players compete individually by taking one full lap around the rink. Simply, the fastest time wins. If one or more skaters end tied for the best time, they will go for another lap to determine the winner. Last year, Conor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers won for a third straight year with a time of 13.378 seconds.

Second in the lineup of events comes the Save Streak competition, which is only in its third year of existence. Here, goalies take turns facing a group of nine shooters from opposing divisions in penalty shot attempts. The winner is whoever makes the most saves. If the final shooter of the group of nine (which will be the captain) is saved, the group resets until the goalie is beaten. Henrik Lundqvist won the event last year with 12 consecutive saves.

If you’ve ever seen an NHL skills competition, you know it, you love it. Eight sharpshooters take aim at four different targets with the fastest to hit all four taking the title. The Bruins’ David Pastrnak won last year, hitting all four bullseyes in 11.309 seconds. Henrik Sedin holds the all-time record at 7.3 seconds.

One of two new events to the competition will pit a team of 10 of the best American female players against 10 of Canada’s best. Three lines of three with one goaltender will compete in a game of two 10 minute periods with a running clock. One fun added rule for this event is any penalty committed will result in a penalty shot.

Another legacy event that’s been around for what seems like forever: Hardest Shot. Step up and blast the puck as hard as you possibly can. Top speed wins. John Carlson of the Capitals took home the title last year with a top speed of 102.8 mph. Zdeno Chara set the all-time mark very high at 108.8 mph in 2012.

The final event of the evening is a brand new and daring idea that is sure to draw plenty of opinions. Players will be elevated 30 feet in the air by a platform located behind one goal. The object is to shoot at different targets with different values around the ice to gain points. Each player will get seven shots to earn as many points for their respective teams as possible. It should be quite interesting to see how this new event plays out and if it’ll capture the imagination like the others have.

Florida Panthers at Chicago Blackhawks odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Florida Panthers at Chicago Blackhawks sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Florida Panthers (27-16-5) visit the Chicago Blackhawks (24-20-6) Tuesday at United Center. Puck drop is set for shortly after 8:30 p.m. ET. We analyze the Panthers-Blackhawks odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips around this matchup.

Panthers at Blackhawks: Projected starting goalies

Sergei Bobrovsky vs. Robin Lehner

Bobrovsky has registered a 3.25 goals against average and .897 save percentage behind a Florida team ranked 25th in the league in goals allowed (3.27 per game) and 22nd in shots allowed (32.0). The former Columbus Blue Jackets netminder has struggled mightily away from home with a 3.65 GAA and .873 SV%.

Lehner owns a 2.81 GAA and .924 SV% this season. He’s making his second straight start for Chicago. Both Corey Crawford and Lehner have performed well in Chicago’s recent surge (5-0, outscoring the opposition 22-9 since Jan. 11).

Panthers at Blackhawks: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 1 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Florida 4, Chicago 3

Moneyline (ML)

The Blackhawks are 7-1 over their last eight home games against the Panthers. The Panthers are playing the second game of a back-to-back, in which Florida won its fifth consecutive game, defeating the Minnesota Wild 5-4 Monday. The Panthers are 6-3 (plus-4 units) in the second half of back-to-backs.

The favorite is 12-3 over the last 15 meetings between the Panthers and ‘Hawks. Both teams have some goal-scoring not fully supported by analytic indicators. That especially applies to the Blackhawks’ win streak (five games). Florida’s defensive numbers are also a good measure worse than expected. Back the PANTHERS (+100) as an even-money dog.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Florida is 13-8 against the puck line when on the road. At home, Chicago is an even 13-13 versus the number.

AVOID the puck line Tuesday. There just isn’t enough value on either side: Panthers +1.5 (-278), Blackhawks -1.5 (+220).

Over/Under (O/U)

The Over/Under here has some extra juice on the Under (-154) for a line of 6.5 (Over: +125). PASS.

Winnipeg Jets at Chicago Blackhawks odds, picks and best bets

Previewing day’s Winnipeg Jets at Chicago Blackhawks sports betting odds, with NHL matchup analysis and picks.

The Winnipeg Jets (25-19-4) visit the Chicago Blackhawks (23-20-6) in a 7 p.m. ET tilt at the United Center. We analyze the Jets-Blackhawks odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips around this matchup.

Jets at Blackhawks: Projected starting goalies

Connor Hellebuyck vs. Robin Lehner

Hellebuyck is putting up similar numbers to those that earned him a runner-up vote for the Vezina Trophy two years ago. The fifth-year NHL’er owns a 2.67 goals-against average and .920 save percentage in 40 games. Hellebuyck’s best outings this season were early on. He has struggled his way to an .896 SV% over his last 16 games.

Lehner returns to the Chicago cage after two straight Corey Crawford starts. The 28-year-old Swede owns a 2.85 GAA and .923 SV% this season. He has been terrific at home (.928 SV%) and has been sharp in both of Chicago’s games against Winnipeg (.943 GAA). An overly robust .934 SV in penalty-killing situations is a signal of likely downward regression. But lately the ‘Hawks have not spent much time in the penalty box; perhaps that regression comes due later in the second half.

Jets at Blackhawks: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated Sunday at 10:00 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Chicago 4, Winnipeg 3

Moneyline (ML)

On the road, Winnipeg is 14-10 with a league-best 42.2% return on investment. At home, Chicago is 11-14 (-18% ROI). The Central Division foes have split a pair of games this season. Over those games and the two that preceded them, the road team is 4-0. But the Jets are just 2-4 in the opening game of a multi-game trip; the Blackhawks are 4-2 in return-to-home games after such trips.

Will lay off the near-pick-em moneyline (CHICAGO -115/WINNIPEG -106). Expect the line to move toward the ‘Hawks. A Jets +105 would be worthy of a look if enough action went toward Chicago.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Winnipeg is 18-6 (18.5% ROI) against the number on the road. But recent Jets’ performances have been off the mark. There are some underlying peripherals that have made Chicago a frequent fade during their 14-4 surge. There are enough cross signals to avoid the CHICAGO -1.5 +230/ WINNIPEG +1.5 -295 proposition.

Over/Under (O/U)

The over is 36-17-1 in Chicago’s last 54 games when their opponent scores two goals or less in their previous game. Winnipeg went into mid-December toting a GAA well under 3.0. The Jets have since allowed a 3.6 GAA in 16 games. In that 16-game span, puck-possession indicators have trended the wrong way and Winnipeg has allowed a 31.8% power play conversion rate.

WILL TAKE THE OVER 5.5 -139.

Chicago Blackhawks at Toronto Maple Leafs odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Chicago Blackhawks at Toronto Maple Leafs sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Chicago Blackhawks (22-20-6) close out a Canada road trip Saturday with a 7 p.m. ET game against the Toronto Maple Leafs (25-16-7) at Scotiabank Arena. We analyze the Blackhawks-Maple Leafs odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips around this matchup.

Blackhawks at Maple Leafs: Projected starting goalies

Corey Crawford vs. Frederik Andersen

Crawford owns a 3.00 goals against average and .908 save percentage. He stopped 32 of 33 against the Montreal Canadiens Wednesday and has logged a .933 SV% over his last three starts.

Andersen owns a 2.80 GAA and .912 SV% through 38 games. He has logged a 3.73 GAA and .893 SV% in six January games, but he yielded just one goal on 32 shots in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Calgary Flames Thursday. The veteran netminder has been undone a bit on the penalty kill, were he has sported a .854 SV%. Andersen is the last line of defense for a Toronto team giving up more shots of late and allowing a 25% power-play conversion rate over the team’s last 11 games.

Blackhawks at Maple Leafs: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 12 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Toronto 5, Chicago 4

Moneyline (ML)

Chicago is thus far 2-0 on its three-city Canadian tour (Ottawa-Montreal-Toronto). Overall, the Blackhawks have won three straight and nine of its last 14 games. Over those 13 games, the ‘Hawks allowed 3.0 goals per game and that’s on the heels of yielding 4.1 GPG from Nov. 29-Dec. 18 (11 games). Possession and shot-quality analytics are not in support of Chicago’s recent surge and those same peripherals are bullish on Toronto despite the Maple Leafs going just 1-4 over their last five games.

Saturday’s game marks the front end of a back-to-back for the ‘Hawks, who have struggled in such situations. Chicago is 3-6 in front-end games. In this scenario, there could also be some look-ahead letdown. After the Toronto game, the ‘Hawks go home for two ahead of next week’s all-star break and then their bye week. Make a small-to-moderate-confidence play on TORONTO (-209).

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Away from home, the Blackhawks are 15-8 against the puck line. And the Leafs have a near-mirror image of that with a 9-15 mark at home.

Again, there are some underlying peripherals making Chicago (+1.5, -149) a fade. AVOID.

Over/Under (O/U)

Both teams have leaned toward the Over in recent games, and there are a slew of trends pointing the same way. The Over is 4-1 across the last five games in the Chicago-Toronto series. There is excellent leverage in the OVER 6.5 (-106).

Chicago Blackhawks at Montreal Canadiens odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Wednesday’s Chicago Blackhawks at Montreal Canadiens spots betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Chicago Blackhawks (21-20-6) and Montreal Canadiens (20-20-7) tangle at Bell Centre Wednesday with puck drop set for 7:30 p.m. ET. We analyze the Blackhawks-Canadiens odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Blackhawks at Canadiens: Projected starting goalies

Corey Crawford vs. Charlie Lindgren

Crawford owns a 3.09 goals against average and a .906 save percentage. Chicago is on the back nine of playing two games in as many days. Running mate Robin Lehner started Tuesday’s game in Ottawa, a 3-2 come-from-behind win for the Blackhawks. The veteran Chicago goalie has been only a Chicago goalie of late – he hasn’t started a road game since Dec. 14. Crawford owns a pedestrian .900 SV% over his last four road turns.

Lindgren draws Wednesday’s start. He enters the day with a 3.09 GAA and .908 SV% for an 0-2-0 record through just two starts.

Blackhawks at Canadiens: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 11 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Montreal 3, Chicago 2

Moneyline (ML)

The ‘Hawks have been quite good when playing the back half of back-to-backs, and they’ve won several such contests after overtime games the previous day. Tuesday’s affair in Ottawa also required a comeback from a 2-0 deficit.

Chicago has exhibited slightly better possession numbers of late, but the Blackhawks still yield too many shots to be consistent winners. Montreal does a better job producing and denying high-quality scoring chances. Over the last three weeks, the Canadiens have piled up several one-goal losses in games that were statistically even or leaning toward the Habs. The lean here is toward the CANADIENS (-182).

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Chicago has a nice road record against the line (14-8); Montreal has a shaky home record against the puck line (8-16). The ‘Hawks haven’t played in many one-goal games of late, and there are a couple questions about Crawford. Otherwise, a play on CHICAGO (+1.5, -176) – as a middling play alongside a Montreal pick on the moneyline – would be a serious consideration.

Over/Under (O/U)

The prices listed bracket what I’d peg as a likely Over to the tune of a -140 figure. Maybe higher. PASS on the line of 5.5 (Over: -149, Under: +125).

Nashville Predators at Chicago Blackhawks odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s Nashville Predators at Chicago Blackhawks sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Nashville Predators (19-16-7) and Chicago Blackhawks (19-19-6) will tangle in a Central Division battle at United Center Thursday at 8:30 p.m. ET. We analyze the Predators-Blackhawks sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips around this matchup.

Predators at Blackhawks: Projected starting goalies

Pekka Rinne vs. Corey Crawford

Rinne owns a 3.06 goals against average and .894 save percentage. Both numbers would be the worst of his career, but look for a bounce-back in the second half of the season.

Crawford is 7-12-2 on the season with a .906 SV% and 3.09 GAA.

Predators at Blackhawks: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 11:45 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Chicago 3, Nashville 2

Moneyline (ML)

Chicago (+115) has looked better on the surface of late, and improvement has been made on the penalty kill. The Blackhawks continue to be woeful on the power play (3-for-their-last-32) and they are unsure as to how to pair star winger Patrick Kane in a productive and consistent line.

PASS.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Both clubs are a game or two under .500 against the puck line. Chicago does lose more than its fair share of games by 2 or more tallies, but the Preds haven’t been playing well enough to leverage the Nashville (-1.5 +185) line. Nashville is 1-4-1 with 4.5 goals per game allowed since Christmas. PASS.

Over/Under (O/U)

The Over is 6-2 in Chicago’s last eight games on one-day rest, 33-15-1 in the Blackhawks’ last 49 games when their opponent scores two or fewer goals in their previous game and 8-1 over Nashville’s last nine road games. It’s also 10-2-1 in the Predators’ last 13 games overall and 5-1-1 over the Preds’ last seven games on one-day of rest.

Nashville has yielded a slew of shots lately. The ‘Hawks always do – they rank last in the NHL, allowing 35.8 shots per game. Back the UNDER 6.5 (-143). Both offenses are out too far over their skis in goals scored (underlying analytics don’t support their current rates). The Over trends are low-hanging fruit for bettors.

Detroit Red Wings at Chicago Blackhawks odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Sunday’s Detroit Red Wings at Chicago Blackhawks sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

The Detroit Red Wings (10-29-3) visit the Chicago Blackhawks (18-18-6) Sunday at United Center for a 7:30 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Red Wings-Blackhawks odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup. This is the first meeting of the season between the two.

Detroit lost 4-1 at the Dallas Stars Friday and has dropped seven of eight, and 19 of 22.

Chicago had a three-game win streak snapped with a 7-5 loss at the Vancouver Canucks Thursday.

Red Wings at Blackhawks: Projected starting goalies

Jimmy Howard vs. Corey Crawford

Howard is 2-13-1 with a 4.11 goals against average (GAA) and an .884 save percentage. Howard has lost his last nine starts (0-8-1), allowing 35 goals on 246 shots for a .858 SV%. He is 1-5-1 on the road with a 4.67 GAA.

Crawford is 6-11-2 with a 3.20 GAA and .905 SV%. Crawford, who is on a four-game losing streak, was pulled in the second period of his last start after yielding four goals on 20 shots in a 7-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils Dec. 23.

Red Wings at Blackhawks: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated Sunday at 11 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Blackhawks 5, Red Wings 2

Moneyline (ML)

PASS. The Blackhawks (-208) are too chalky and not worth the risk of laying that kind of juice on a .500 team. The Red Wings (+170) are playing so bad, there’s no bet here either.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (PL/ATS)

The BLACKHAWKS (-1.5, +125) are the STRONGEST PLAY. They’re 23-19 vs. the PL overall and 9-9-3 straight up at home. The Red Wings (+1.5, -154) are 17-25 vs. the PL overall and 4-15-2 SU on the road.

New to sports betting? Every $1 wagered on the Blackhawks PL will profit $1.25 if they win by 2 or more goals.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 6.5 (+125) is worth a small wager, especially if Howard starts in goal for the Red Wings. His 4.11 GAA ranks last among all goalies. While both offenses average less than 3 goals per game – Chicago is 20th with 2.88 GPG and Detroit last at 2.14 – the defenses are in the top third of goals allowed. Detroit gives up an NHL-most 3.81 per game, and Chicago is 10th at 3.21.

Chicago Blackhawks at Colorado Avalanche odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Chicago Blackhawks at Colorado Avalanche sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Chicago Blackhawks (14-16-6) travel to Denver to take on the Colorado Avalanche (22-10-3) in a 9 p.m. ET Central Division battle at the Pepsi Center. We analyze the Blackhawks-Avalanche odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips around this matchup.

Blackhawks at Avalanche: Projected starting goalies

Corey Crawford vs. Philipp Grubauer

Crawford has logged a 3.08 goals against average behind a ‘Hawks defense which yields a league-worst 36.0 shots on goal per game. The veteran netminder owns a .909 save percentage on the season, but over his last seven games — with three of those games coming against the Avs — Crawford has been tagged with an .885 figure. He owns a similar save percentage over his last four road games.

Grubauer owns a 2.79 goals against average and .915 save percentage over 20 starts. Those figures ticked toward the better when the 28-year-old German stopped 37 of 39 shots Thursday.

Blackhawks at Avalanche: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated Saturday at 12 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Chicago 4, Colorado 3

Moneyline (ML)

These two Central Division foes are about even in killing penalties (Chicago 18th, Colorado 20th), but give the Blackhawks a special-teams advantage in this contest. The ‘Hawks own a 28% power-play success rate over their last eight games. Veteran RW Patrick Kane remains the linchpin of the Chicago offense, with or without an extra skater, and Kane has a hot hand of late. The 31-year-old has seven points over his last three games and 31 over his last 22.

Colorado’s possession analytics don’t back up the team’s 9-2-1 mark over its last 12 games. The Avs are playing their fourth game in six days. They are 1-5 in fourth games the last six times that scenario played out on their schedule. Chicago’s faceoff, possession, and special-teams indicators are headed in the right direction. BLACKHAWKS (+190) is a solid play Saturday night. But be patient – betting is heavy on the Avs side; a 2-to-1 play could be there by puck drop.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Colorado has lost in regulation just four times in 16 home games, and the Avalanche are 6-5 in the tough Central Division. Still, trends on both sides are not supportive of a puck line play. Those trends include Avalanche routs of Chicago (by scores of 5-2, 7-3 and 4-1) on Nov. 29, Nov. 30, and Dec. 18, respectively. PASS on Chicago (+1.5, -143).

Over/Under (O/U)

The Under is 9-4 in the Blackhawks’ last 13 games as an underdog and 4-0 in the Avalanche’s last 4 games as a favorite.

But, PASS on the extra-juice proposition here 5.5 (Over: -154, Under: +125).
