12 former Vikings account for 9th-most dead salary cap space

After moving on from multiple players the last two seasons, the Minnesota Vikings have $31,534,662 in dead cap space.

Maneuvering the salary cap is a difficult exercise. A financial version of Tetris, it required massive amounts of planning and structuring contracts in a way to maximize the puzzle that is conducive to flexibility.

The Minnesota Vikings are currently trying to get back to a great spot with the salary cap as general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah tries to clean up the mistakes made by his predecessor Rick Spielman.

According to Over The Cap, the Vikings have the 9th-most dead salary cap space with $31,534,662 counting toward the 2023 salary cap split between 12 players.

Michael Carter has low-ankle sprain, considered day-to-day

Michael Carter has low-ankle sprain, considered day-to-day

The Jets received good news regarding the injury to running back Michael Carter, who left Sunday’s win over the Bears with a lower-body injury.

Head coach Robert Saleh said Monday that Carter only has a low-ankle sprain and is considered “day-to-day” and has a chance to play Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.

Low-ankle sprains are obviously better than high-ankle sprains. Had that been the case, Carter would likely have been out for at least a month.

The Jets were able to see Sunday that they have running backs that can hold the fort while Carter is out. Ty Johnson and Zonovan Knight combined for 131 rushing yards on 19 attempts helping lead the Jets to a 31-10 win over the Chicago Bears.

Other injury updates from Monday include linebacker Chazz Surratt (hamstring), Ashtyn Davis (hamstring) and Cedric Ogbuehi (groin) all being questionable for the week and day-to-day, similar to Carter.

The Jets will have more information on all these players Wednesday.

Former UNC linebacker Chazz Surratt signing with Jets

Former UNC football standout linebacker Chazz Surratt is signing a practice squad deal with the New York Jets.

Former UNC linebacker [autotag]Chazz Surratt[/autotag] is on the move as he is expected to sign a deal with the New York Jets.

The deal is expected to be for the Jets’ practice squad. This comes a day after Surratt was waived by the Minnesota Vikings.

Surratt was a third-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

A two-time All-ACC defender at North Carolina, Surratt played in nine games for the Vikings in 2021 and was in the middle of a four-year deal he signed.

A fresh start could be a good thing for the talented linebacker. In two seasons at the position at UNC, Surratt totaled 207 tackles, 22.5 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks.

Surratt now joins former Tar Heels teammate Michael Carter, a key piece to the Jets offense heading into this season.

Minnesota Vikings waive DT Jaylen Twyman

The former sixth-round pick was waived on Tuesday

The Minnesota Vikings continue their purge of Rick Spielman’s 2021 draft class by waiving former sixth-round pick Jaylen Twyman.

Twyman was viewed highly coming out of the 2021 draft. He was a gap-shooting 3-technique defensive tackle that specialized in rushing the passer.

At the NFL combine, Twyman weighed in nearly 30 pounds over his college playing weight and had historically bad athletic testing, especially compared to his college tape.

Unfortunately,  Twyman had his rookie season come to a screeching halt after he was shot in Washington D.C. just before week one last season.

With a new regime coming in, it should come as no surprise to see the Vikings move on from a lot of the 2021 draft class, as there were quite a few players that weren’t up to par.

Third-round picks Wyatt Davis, Chazz Surratt and Kellen Mond were also casualties, along with fourth-round pick Janarius Robinson.

Minnesota Vikings waive former third round pick G Wyatt Davis

Rick Spielman’s 2021 draft class takes another brutal hit with another third-round pick being waived

The Minnesota Vikings have now waived their fourth member of the 2021 NFL draft class Wyatt Davis.

This is a brutal look for former general manager Rick Spielman as three of the four third-round picks he made in 2021 are no longer on the roster. Both Chazz Surratt and Kellen Mond were also casualties, along with fourth-round pick Janarius Robinson.

Davis was thought of as a potential first-round pick after 2019, but he injured his knee twice at Ohio State, causing him to fall all the way to pick number 85.

Once he got to Minnesota, he showed up out of shape and got hurt pretty quickly. Once he did get on the field, Davis was clearly a third-string guy on this roster having been supplanted by Kyle Hinton.

Minnesota Vikings waive linebacker Chazz Surratt

Another 2021 Vikings draft pick hits the waiver wire

The Minnesota Vikings continue to cut ties with their 2021 draft class by waiving their second third-round pick of the day in Chazz Surratt.

A former quarterback for North Carolina, Surratt moved to linebacker when Sam Howell came to campus. He was a two-time All-ACC defender and had an ideal athletic profile.

The issue with Surratt is that he wasn’t anywhere close to strong enough to play the position with any kind of success. Surratt can’t shed a block to save his life and it hindered any kind of success he would have.

Surratt is the third 2021 draft pick the Vikings have moved on from today, as both Janarius Robinson and Kellen Mond.

Five project players on the Vikings who could develop down the road

Which Vikings player are you most excited about for down the road?

Minnesota appears to be a team primed for short-term contention. The Vikings revamped their defense through free agency this offseason. With a high-octane offense still, the team can contend for the playoffs as soon as 2021.

What about after this season? Minnesota might be in a playoff window, but there are a few players on the team who may develop down the road. The team has some enticing project players, some of whom may end up being a big part of the team’s future.

So here are some less established players who could go on to be successful in the league:

The three Vikings draftees who have yet to sign with the team

These Minnesota Vikings 2021 draftees have yet to agree to terms with the team.

Minnesota has a deep draft class this year and that makes sense — this a team that will need rookies to make an immediate impact.

The Vikings have some draftees who can be solutions to problems in 2021, like OT Christian Darrisaw and G Wyatt Davis.

The Vikings have already agreed to terms with eight draftees at the time this article was published. But what about the other three? This is a list of those players.

Just a disclaimer here: these players not reportedly agreeing to terms yet isn’t necessarily dire. The team can still work out deals.

Here is the list:

North Carolina LB Chazz Surratt named Vikings’ best value pick

What do you think of the Minnesota Vikings taking North Carolina LB Chazz Surratt in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft?

The Vikings made an interesting choice in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft.

Despite having needs at wide receiver and defensive end, Minnesota took North Carolina LB Chazz Surratt. The team taking a linebacker is likely a testament to how highly it viewed Surratt, considering the Vikings only really needed depth at that position.

Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox thinks Minnesota did a good job in taking the linebacker, listing Surratt as the Vikings’ best value pick of the draft. Here’s what else he wrote:

“The former Tar Heels standout should instantly add some much-needed playmaking ability to Minnesota’s linebacking corps. A terrific all-around defender, he amassed 91 tackles, six sacks, 7.5 tackles for loss, three passes defended and an interception last season.”

My only issue with this is that Surratt’s play-making won’t really be vital until 2022 at the earliest. Of course, it’d be great for the Vikings if he thrived as their third linebacker next season.

ESPN’s Todd McShay has an interesting choice for the Vikings’ best draft pick

The Minnesota Vikings are a team that ESPN’s Todd McShay really liked in the 2021 NFL draft. McShay is a fan of the North Carolina LB Chazz Surratt pick.

ESPN’s Todd McShay tabbed a favorite draftee from each team in the NFL this season, and his pick for the Vikings is one that didn’t really fit a need.

Minnesota selecting North Carolina LB Chazz Surratt was McShay’s favorite Vikings draftee. Here’s what he wrote about the choice:

“Minnesota has Eric Kendricks and Anthony Barr at the second level, but Eric Wilson signed with Philadelphia. Surratt provides depth there. He was my No. 51 prospect, and the Vikes did a nice job landing him in the third round. He packs more power than you’d expect from a former quarterback, and I think he will play a big role for Minnesota down the road.”

McShay also singled out the Vikings as a team that he really liked this draft.

“I think Minnesota did a great job moving back in Round 1 and still getting Virginia Tech tackle Christian Darrisaw. Texas A&M’s Kellen Mond is an interesting developmental QB, and Ohio State guard Wyatt Davis will further help the pass protection. A really good draft for GM Rick Spielman.”

For Minnesota, it bodes well to have this many well-known analysts weigh in with positive things to say about its draft. Now, we’ve just got to see how these players develop on the field.
