Hornets at 76ers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

76ers 113, Hornets 108

Money line (ML)

The Hornets were rolled 108-93 on New Year’s Day by the injury-depleted Memphis Grizzlies as 4-point home favorites. Charlotte shot terribly all over the court, going 40.7% from the field, 29% from behind the 3-point arc and 66.7% from the charity stripe. They had fewer rebounds, assists, points in the point and fast-break points, and more turnovers.

Philadelphia ran the then-undefeated Orlando Magic out of the gym, leading by 38 points at one point in a 116-92 road win as a 3.5-point favorite on New Year’s Eve. The 76ers led the Magic in fast-break points 18-2 and held Orlando to 34.7% field-goal shooting and 25% from three for the game. PF Joel Embiid tied for a game-high 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting with 9 rebounds, 2 blocks and zero turnovers.

The 76ers have beaten the Hornets in 11 straight head-to-head matchups, in fact, Embiid and PG Ben Simmons have never lost to Charlotte. The last five victories have come within how much Philadelphia is favored Saturday.

On one hand, we’re getting value because Charlotte was terrible last night and Philadelphia looks like an early-season NBA Finals contender, but on the other hand, the 76ers have owned the Hornets recently.

I lean HORNETS (+360) for a quarter-unit because I’m going to take them plus the points. The 76ers will probably edge them out but my long-term sports betting strategy is to sprinkle on an underdog’s money line when taking them to cover the spread.

Against the spread (ATS)

It’s rare when we follow and not fade the market, but let’s TAKE HORNETS +9.5 (-110) because that appears to be the sharp side. According to Pregame.com, 57% of the action is on Charlotte despite them getting destroyed by the Grizzlies and Philadelphia looking great so far.

The Hornets are 9-3 ATS off of no rest and have covered in 55% of their games as road dogs since the beginning of last season.

Over/Under (O/U)

lean UNDER 216.5 (-110) because I think the trend of four straight Unders in Hornets-76ers games is stronger than these teams being a combined 1-9 O/U so far this year. Still, I’d put only a tiny wager on this.

Also, the Hornets offense was so bad last night that I am expecting a bounce-back performance and effort. They were getting some quality looks, just very few of them fell.

Memphis Grizzlies at Charlotte Hornets odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Friday’s Memphis Grizzlies at Charlotte Hornets NBA betting odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Memphis Grizzlies (1-3) meet the Charlotte Hornets (2-2) at the Spectrum Center on New Year’s Day for a 7 p.m. ET tip-off. Below, we analyze the Grizzlies-Hornets NBA betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The final score of 126-107 made the Boston Celtics beatdown of the Grizzlies as 7-point road underdogs more competitive than it actually was. Memphis’ injury report is starting to mirror an NFL roster’s as the Grizzlies are down a slew of key contributors, including the reigning Rookie of the Year—Ja Morant—and dynamic stretch four in PF Jaren Jackson Jr.

Charlotte has won back-to-back games as huge underdogs against quality competition coming into Friday’s game. The Hornets beat the brakes off of the Dallas Mavericks 118-99 as 8.5-point ‘dogs Wednesday and won vs. a fully loaded Nets team in Brooklyn 106-104 as double-digit underdogs Dec. 27.

Memphis snapped Charlotte’s head-to-head five-game winning streak (both outright and ATS) heading into last season by beating the Hornets in both meetings.

  • Over/Under: 219.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Grizzlies at Hornets: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Hornets 112, Grizzlies 102

Money line (ML)

PASS ON THE MONEY LINE. I’m on the Hornets in this game, but I don’t like laying -150 or greater in NBA regular-season action. I wouldn’t rule out doing a little North/South Carolina parlay with the Hornets and Clemson Tigers’ money lines.

Against the spread (ATS)

According to Pregame.com, over 80% of the market is betting Charlotte so let’s follow the money BET HORNETS -4.5 (-105) for 2 units. I am buying Hornets stock for the season and project that they’ll be at least in the Eastern Conference postseason play-in tournament at the end of the year.

A lot of the NBA community needs to get over, for whatever reason, SF Gordon Hayward didn’t work out with the Boston Celtics. He is still an All-Star-caliber player who brings veteran leadership to a young Charlotte locker room.

Hornets PG Terry Rozier has been playing good basketball to start the season and should pad his stats against whoever Memphis is starting in place of an injured Morant. Also, SF Miles Bridges’ game has steadily improved since he won the 2020 Rising Stars MVP Award during last year’s NBA All-Star Weekend.

Over/Under (O/U)

Unlike the Charlotte side, which the market is in agreement on, we have a Pros vs. Joes scenario with the total in Grizzlies-Hornets: 82% of the money is on the Under but 56% of the tickets/bets are on the Over, according to Pregame.com.

Typically the sharp side is the money column and I’d assume the bettors hitting the Under have the same questions as me about how the banged-up Grizzlies are going to get buckets.

It’s only a lean but I’ll BET UNDER 219.5 (-110) for a quarter-unit.

Charlotte Hornets at Dallas Mavericks odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Wednesday’s Charlotte Hornets at Dallas Mavericks NBA betting odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Charlotte Hornets (1-2) are in the Big D Wednesday to play the Dallas Mavericks (1-2) at 8:30 p.m. ET at the American Airlines Center. Below, we analyze the Hornets-Mavericks NBA betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Hornets at Mavericks: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 1:45 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Hornets +290 (bet $100 to win $290) | Mavericks -375 (bet $375 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Hornets +8.5 (-110) | Mavericks -8.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 222.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Hornets at Mavericks: Key Injuries

  • Cody Zeller (hand) out

Hornets at Mavericks: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Mavericks 115, Hornets 111

Money line (ML)

Charlotte notched a nice little upset as 11-point home ‘dogs over a fully loaded Brooklyn Nets team 106-104 in its last outing Sunday. Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving were amazing, but so was Hornets’ newly signed free agent Gordon Hayward who had a team-high 28 points on 12-for-20 shooting, 6 rebounds and 7 assists.

The Mavericks dropped an epic regular-season beatdown on the Los Angeles Clippers on their home floor, 124-73, on Dec. 27. Instead of listing outlandish stats from the Mavericks-Clippers box score, I’ll just say the only thing Los Angeles had more of than Dallas was fouls committed. It was 77-27 at halftime. Enough said.

While I don’t envision the Hornets being a contender, I do think they’ll be a tough out during the regular seasons for teams that are taking them lightly. Not to say that’s what Brooklyn did on Dec. 27, but the point is Charlotte has the talent and coaching to beat good teams.

I lean HORNETS (+290) for a quarter-unit because they are a live ‘dog, and I’m going to bet Charlotte plus the points heavier.

Against the spread (ATS)

Last season, these teams split their head-to-head with the road team winning both games. Coincidentally, the game Dallas won was the meeting that Luka Doncic was sidelined with an injury.

Also, last season, the Hornets had a winning ATS record as a road ‘dog (17-15-1 ATS) while the Mavericks had a losing ATS record as a home favorite (13-17-1 ATS). If the home-court edge is lessened because of the COVID-influenced atmosphere, doesn’t that help the Hornets in this spot?

GIMME HORNETS +8.5 (-110) for 1.5 units.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS ON THE TOTAL.

It has only been a few games, but I was surprised to see Dallas has the 14th-rated defensive efficiency and the Hornets’ 11th. Charlotte playing at the seventh-fastest pace and Dallas second-slowest is also surprising, but if the Hornets push the pace I’d expect the Mavericks to welcome that since they led the NBA in offensive rating last year.

Bottom line: I don’t have a feel for the total.

Nets at Hornets: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Nets 119, Hornets 103

Money line (ML)

The price tag on the Nets (-375) is a little steep, costing you nearly four times your potential return. Over the long haul, playing heavy favorites is not a winning strategy. While the Hornets (+290) are winless through the first two games, you can’t back them, either.

PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

The NETS -8.5 (-110) are worth a roll of the dice laying more than four buckets on the road. They roughed up the Celtics on Christmas Day in Beantown 123-95, and they have won each of their first two games by an average of 27.0 points per game, easily covering each.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 226.5 (-110) is the way to go, as Brooklyn has held the opposition to just 97.0 PPG through the first two outings. The Hornets hit the Under Saturday in a narrow two-point loss to OKC, and Charlotte might have some tired legs after the quick turnaround.

Thunder at Hornets: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Hornets 106, Thunder 104

Money line (ML)

The HORNETS (-155) celebrate their home opener after suffering a narrow loss in Cleveland on Wednesday. The Thunder (+125) had their opener in Houston canceled at the last minute as the Rockets didn’t have the necessary eight players required to play. We know OKC will be itching to go, but we’re not sure what we’re going to get from them. Back the home side as a result.

Against the spread (ATS)

The HORNETS -3.5 (-105) cashed in their final five games at home to close out the 2019-20 campaign, and they’re 7-1-1 ATS in the past nine games overall dating back to last season. You’ll be going against the grain here, as far as the head-to-head trends, as OKC is 16-6-1 ATS in the past 23 meetings in this cross-conference series, and 5-1 ATS in the past six trips to Buzz City.

But play the home side, as the Thunder +3.5 (-115) are going to have a much different look with head coach Billy Donovan having moved on, no more Steven Adams, Danilo Gallinari, Chris Paul or Dennis Schroder, with only Al Horford and George Hill as notable additions. It might take some time for this OKC unit to gel.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 217.5 (-105) is the play in this one. The Under is 4-0 in the past four meetings in this series, and 4-1 in the past five meetings in Charlotte, too. While the Hornets opened with an Over result in Cleveland, the Thunder might be a bit rusty, and that’s reason enough to play the Under here.

Hornets at Cavaliers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Hornets 111, Cavaliers 97

Money line (ML)

The Hornets (-145) are the play in this game, as the Cavaliers (+120) will be without Love and KPJ. In addition, Cleveland might also be without Nance and Sexton, which would be a huge chunk of its offense. Charlotte will win, but it’s slightly cheaper taking them laying 2.5 points. PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

HORNETS -2.5 (-110) will cost you slightly less, but it’s a similar bet essentially as playing the money line. The Cavaliers +2.5 (-110) are a tempting play but only because they’re at home. Their injury report reads like a team in the middle of the season rather than heading into the opener. Charlotte is also 4-1 ATS in the past five trips to Cleveland, too.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 214.5 (-110) is the way to go with the Cavaliers already dealing with injury issues. And hey, the Under is 6-2 in the past eight meetings in this series, too.
