Former Spartan picks off Michigan football quarterback

A former Spartan, and brother of an MSU great, picked off Michigan QB Davis Warren on Saturday:

Michigan hosted Arkansas State on Saturday afternoon. The Wolverines and Red Wolves squared off inside of Michigan Stadium, with Michigan winning, 28-18.

At the end of the first quarter, former Spartan Charles Willekes, a brother of MSU legend Kenny Willekes, picked off a Davis Warren pass and returned it inside the Wolverine red zone.

The brother of Michigan State football great Kenny Willekes has found a new home.

After being suspended indefinitely in October of 2020 for a misdemeanor assault charge, MSU defensive end Charles Willekes entered his name in the NCAA Transfer Portal. On Tuesday of this week, he announced that he is committing to Arkansas State to continue his playing career and education.

Willekes did not play for MSU before transferring in 2020. He redshirted in 2019. He will now get a fresh start in a new conference.

Michigan State WR/CB Julian Barnett enters name in transfer portal

Michigan State has lost another player to the transfer portal. WR/CB Julian Barnett has entered his name in the transfer portal.

Michigan State has lost another player to the transfer portal. Wide receiver and cornerback Julian Barnett has entered his name in the transfer portal after receiving very little play time this year. He joins Marcel Lewis, Charles Willekes and Luke Fulton as players to put their name in the transfer portal this year.

Barnett was a 4-star prospect out of Belleville, MI. He was also the No. 57 player and No. 8 cornerback in the class of 2019. Barnett was switched to wide receiver upon his arrival on campus and saw sparse play time his freshman year.  Barnett finished his freshman year with 13 receptions for 182 yards and two carries for 19 yards.

Barnett was then flipped back to cornerback this season, but barely saw the field. He was able to record three tackles over two games this season. Barnett slipped in the depth chart behind players like Chris Jackson and true freshman Angelo Grose.

Barnett could do what Connor Heyward did last year and test the waters and come back.

Michigan State LB’s Luke Fulton, Charles Willekes enter transfer portal

Michigan State has lost two linebackers, Luke Fulton and Charles Willekes, to the transfer portal. Look for Mel Tucker to add to the core.

Michigan State has lost two more players to the transfer portal. Red-shirt freshman linebackers Luke Fulton and Charles Willekes are the latest defections to the portal.

Neither Fulton or Willekes have suited up for the Spartans this year as a suspension was handed down on both of them before the season had begun. The suspension was the result of an off the field investigation being done over a situation that had taken place. Fulton was initially charged with aggravated assault and there were no known charges for Willekes.

This would mark three linebackers to transfer from the Spartans, after Marcel Lewis announced his decision to transfer earlier this season. That leaves Michigan State with eight scholarship linebackers for the remainder of this season.

With no linebackers currently committed in the 2021 recruiting class, expect to see head coach Mel Tucker, defensive coordinator Scottie Hazelton and linebackers coach Ross Els to add one or two linebackers through the 2021 recruiting class, as well as hitting the transfer portal hard this off-season.
