Michigan State has lost another player to the transfer portal. Wide receiver and cornerback Julian Barnett has entered his name in the transfer portal after receiving very little play time this year. He joins Marcel Lewis, Charles Willekes and Luke Fulton as players to put their name in the transfer portal this year.

Barnett was a 4-star prospect out of Belleville, MI. He was also the No. 57 player and No. 8 cornerback in the class of 2019. Barnett was switched to wide receiver upon his arrival on campus and saw sparse play time his freshman year.  Barnett finished his freshman year with 13 receptions for 182 yards and two carries for 19 yards.

Barnett was then flipped back to cornerback this season, but barely saw the field. He was able to record three tackles over two games this season. Barnett slipped in the depth chart behind players like Chris Jackson and true freshman Angelo Grose.

Barnett could do what Connor Heyward did last year and test the waters and come back.

The roller coaster ride that is Marcel Lewis’ 2020 football experience continues. On Monday, the redshirt freshman linebacker announced that he is entering the transfer portal.

Lewis had opted out of the season back in August, citing COVID-19 concerns, but ultimately opted back in before Monday’s decision to transfer. It’s important to note that Lewis lost one family member during the pandemic and had another severely sick in the hospital, so it is important for the MSU fan base to be empathetic to what this young man is going through.

In a statement released on Twitter, Lewis noted how difficult of a decision this was for him to make. One thing I cannot stand is when fans attack a player for transferring or de-committing from the team, so let’s please show some class to Marcel Lewis and his family and respect his decision.

Shortly after Michigan State Football fans received the news that Big Ten Football would be returning this fall, they also received news that one of the players who had opted out earlier due to COVID-19 concerns would be opting back into the season.

Back in early August, redshirt freshman linebacker Marcel Lewis opted out of the season after he had family members who had struggled with COVID-19 during the pandemic and spent time in the hospital. On Wednesday, Lewis tweeted that he had decided to reverse that decision a few weeks ago, opting back into the 2020 season.

Lewis released a statement on his Twitter on Wednesday explaining his decision:

“Just so there isn’t any confusion going on out there,” Lewis wrote, “I have decided to opt back in. I decided to make this decision weeks ago. This decision was due to the more resources we have now and more development in our testing protocols.”

Jacub Panasiuk, Justin Stevens and Jordan Reid are all still currently opting out, at least from what we know at this time.

I am not sure if everyone knew this, but we are in the middle of a pandemic folks. While Michigan State Football started practice on Friday to gear up for the 2020 fall football season, not every player has felt comfortable participating. Recently, offensive lineman Jordan Reid and defensive lineman Jacub Panasiuk opted out of the upcoming season. Today, we found out that two more Spartans will be following suit and opting out of the 2020 season.

These players are true freshman offensive tackle Justin Stevens and sophomore outside linebacker Marcel Lewis. Stevens is a 3-star recruit out of Mississauga, Ontario in Canada and Lewis is a former 3-star recruit from Chippewa Valley High School in Clinton Township, Michigan.

Both players released statements explaining their positions and reasoning for opting out, which you can read below.

Here is Stevens’ statement:

Here is Lewis’ statement:

While I think we are all looking forward to a potential football season, it is beyond reasonable for college student-athletes to opt-out of a season if they are concerned about their long-term health.
