Report: Eagles to hire Browns scout Charles Walls as Director of Player Personnel

The Philadelphia Eagles are set to hire Cleveland Browns national scout Charles Walls as the teams’ new Director of Player Personnel

The Eagles have worked to diligently restructure their scouting departments and front office this spring after several staff departures.

The first positive domino has fallen, as Kimberly A. Martin reports that Philadelphia is hiring Cleveland Browns national scout, Charles Walls to the position of Director of Player Personnel.

Walls would be filling the role previously held by Brandon Brown and Ian Cunningham.

Before joining the Browns, Walls had been the Southwest region scout for Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst since 2017 after working his way up in the scouting department since joining the organization as an intern in 2013.

During Walls tenure with the Packers, Green Bay landed Pro Bowl running back Aaron Jones (Texas El-Paso), Jace Sternberger (Texas A&M), Kingsley Keke (Texas A&M), and Ty Summers (TCU) out of the Southwest region and Walls also played a role in drafting Elgton Jenkins (Mississippi State), undrafted linebackers Curtis Bolton (Oklahoma) and Randy Ramsey (Arkansas).

Before working in the Southwest region Walls was the Packers’ National Football Scouting representative for the NFL scouting combine.

Packers lose area scout to Browns

Charles Walls, who scouted the southwest region for the Packers in 2019, is leaving Green Bay for the Browns.

The Cleveland Browns are stealing away one of the Green Bay Packers’ area scouts.

According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN, Charles Walls – who spent the last five years in Green Bay as a college scout – is leaving Green Bay for a new opportunity in Cleveland.

Walls joined the Packers scouting staff in 2013. An area scout since 2015, Walls scouted the fertile southwest region for GM Brian Gutekunst during the 2019 season.

Browns GM Andrew Berry is bringing Walls to Cleveland to be a national scout, providing a promotion for the young evaluator.

The Packers’ remaining college scouts are Luke Benuska, Joe Hueber, Patrick Moore, Mike Owen, Brandian Ross and Brett Thiesen. Chris Gaines is a scouting assistant.

Report: Browns hiring Packers scout Charles Walls as national scout

Reports from various Green Bay sources, including one from Jim Owczarski of Packers News, indicate the Cleveland Browns are poaching away Charles Walls from the Green Bay Packers’ scouting department. Walls will serve as a national scout for the Browns.

The move is a promotion for Walls, putting him in charge of a broader set of players than an area scout.

Walls has covered the Southwest region as an area scout since 2017. He has worked with the Packers since 2013, serving as a scouting intern and the team’s NFL Scouting Combine scout before heading out on the road. He also has some college coaching experience following the end of his playing career at Old Dominion, where Walls was part of the school’s first-ever football team in the late 2000s.

He joins the new front office staff under GM Andrew Berry. It’s fairly common for new regimes to make changes to the scouting department. Interestingly, Walls had strong ties to the former Browns regime headed by GM John Dorsey and VPs Eliot Wolf and Alonzo Highsmith, all of whom had extensive Packers backgrounds.
