Browns front office moves: Add historical NFL hire, lose national scout reportedly

Andrew Berry’s front office continues to be a place teams want to pull executives from, this time his national scout, while a historic NFL hire is reportedly about to take place as well:

There are four major transaction windows in the NFL primarily impacting four different groups:

  1. Right after the season – Coaching and head of front office changes are made, generally, shortly following the end of a regular season.
  2. NFL league year opens – When the NFL league year opens, veteran players are on the move in free agency and via trades.
  3. NFL draft – A short time later, the NFL draft (and undrafted free agency) hits with college prospects joining the ranks of the NFL.
  4. After the NFL draft – Even on teams that make moves at the top of their front office, generally, scouts and other front office moves are saved until after the NFL draft.

For the Cleveland Browns, their front office is seen as a place ripe to pull people from with promotions and raises. Under Andrew Berry, the Browns have put together a staff full of interesting, mostly young, executives that other teams are interested in.

Report: Eagles to hire Browns scout Charles Walls as Director of Player Personnel

The Philadelphia Eagles are set to hire Cleveland Browns national scout Charles Walls as the teams’ new Director of Player Personnel

The Eagles have worked to diligently restructure their scouting departments and front office this spring after several staff departures.

The first positive domino has fallen, as Kimberly A. Martin reports that Philadelphia is hiring Cleveland Browns national scout, Charles Walls to the position of Director of Player Personnel.

Walls would be filling the role previously held by Brandon Brown and Ian Cunningham.

Before joining the Browns, Walls had been the Southwest region scout for Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst since 2017 after working his way up in the scouting department since joining the organization as an intern in 2013.

During Walls tenure with the Packers, Green Bay landed Pro Bowl running back Aaron Jones (Texas El-Paso), Jace Sternberger (Texas A&M), Kingsley Keke (Texas A&M), and Ty Summers (TCU) out of the Southwest region and Walls also played a role in drafting Elgton Jenkins (Mississippi State), undrafted linebackers Curtis Bolton (Oklahoma) and Randy Ramsey (Arkansas).

Before working in the Southwest region Walls was the Packers’ National Football Scouting representative for the NFL scouting combine.

Report: Browns expected to hire Eagles exec Catherine Raiche

Raiche has been the Eagles VP of Football Operations

The Cleveland Browns are set to add another voice to the team’s front office, and this one will be a female voice. Per a report from the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Browns are expected to hire Eagles vice president of football operations Catherine Raiche.

Raiche previously worked with Browns GM Andrew Berry during his stint in Philadelphia. The role Raiche will take on with the Browns is unspecified but was deemed “high-ranking” in the report from Josh Tolentino of the Inquirer. Her background is in player personnel and football operations.

She would be the highest-ranking female the Browns have ever had in their front office. Cleveland already blazed a trail with Callie Brownson as head coach Kevin Stefanski’s chief of staff, and Brownson became the first female to ever coach a position group during a regular-season game.

Browns hire Eagles VP of football operations Catherine Raîche to a high-ranking position

Cleveland Browns hire Philadelphia Eagles VP of football operations Catherine Raîche to a high-ranking position with assistant GM-like duties

Howie Roseman’s spring of discontent continued on Tuesday, as another key Eagles front-office staffer is moving on to a better opportunity.

Catherine Raîche was already the highest-ranking female in a football executive position in the NFL as the Eagles’ VP of football operations is heading to Cleveland to reunite with Andrew Berry and the Browns.

Berry worked with Raîche with the Eagles and has now hired Raiche “for an undisclosed high-ranking position” where she is now essentially the Browns’ assistant General Manager according to Jori Epstein.

Brandon Brown and Ian Cunningham have previously accepted front office roles with the Giants and Bears doing increased roles.

Raiche replaced Berry in Philadelphia after he accepted the Browns GM position.

Vikings close first round of interviews, set to make history with Catherine Raiche on Monday

The search is officially underway!

The Minnesota Vikings finished their first round of interviews for their vacant general manager and head coach positions over the weekend. Per ESPN’s Courtney Cronin, the team met with Tennessee Titans’ director of personnel Monti Ossenfort and Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.

Both candidates are on teams that are still in the playoffs.

The Vikings are expected to meet with the Cleveland Browns’ vice president of football operations, Kwesi Odofo-Mensah on Monday, along with a historic interview with Philadelphia Eagles’ vice president of football operations, Catherine Raiche.

Monday’s meeting with Raiche will be the first known GM interview with a female candidate.

Of course, Raiche’s candidacy goes beyond an incredible benchmark that should have been broken a long time ago. She has served in administrative roles and as an assistant general manager with the Montreal Alouettes and Toronto Argonauts in the Canadian Football League.

Her initial job in Philly was football operations coordinator in 2019 before being bumped to VP of football operations in 2021. So Raiche is clearly a rising star in the executive ranks of the NFL.

Susan Tose Spencer was the first woman to land a GM job in the NFL after being promoted by her father—then owner Leonard Tose—for the Eagles in 1983. When speaking about this historic moment for Raiche, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo made a prediction.

“I think she’s going to get a general manager job in the future, and I think it’s going to be a good hire,” said Garafolo

Whether the Vikings are the team to make that hire remains to be seen, but an interview is certainly a step in the right direction.
