Report: Former Chargers QB Philip Rivers expressed interest in NFL return in 2022

Former Chargers QB Philip Rivers considered coming out of retirement this past season.

Former Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers considered coming out of retirement this past season.

According to NFL Media’s Rich Eisen, he heard from multiple sources at the combine that Rivers reached out to the Dolphins and 49ers about potentially suiting up for them.

“I heard at the combine that Philip Rivers contacted both of them to come back late last year,” Eisen said. “Which is what I heard and the way I heard it. I didn’t happen, don’t know why it didn’t happen. But I heard that at the combine.”

San Francisco had been down to their third-string quarterback, Brock Purdy, late in the season and the playoffs after season-ending injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo. Rivers probably felt he still had some juice to help them on their run.

Rivers last played in 2020 for the Colts after spending 16 years with the Chargers. Rivers has been the head football coach at St. Michael’s Catholic High School in Fairhope, AL for the last two years.

This is notable heading into the upcoming season, with there being plenty of quarterback-needy teams. So if Rivers still wants to make a return at age 41, there could be some squads that would be interested in his services.

Rivers spent 16 years with the Bolts, including 14 as the starting quarterback. He amassed 59,271 passing yards and 397 touchdown passes, ranking first in franchise history in both categories. He had a record of 123-101, making the playoffs six times and going 5-6 in 11 postseason games.

In his final NFL season, Rivers led the Colts to an 11-5 record with 24 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions. He threw for 4,169 yards, the eighth straight season he topped 4,000 yards through the air.

Twitter reacts after QB Philip Rivers’ possible last game of career

Twitter pays respect to quarterback Philip Rivers after what might’ve been his last game.

After 16 seasons with the Chargers, quarterback Philip Rivers took his talents to the Colts, where he showed that he still had some gas in the tank, leading Indianapolis to an 11-5 record and a playoff appearance.

The Colts’ season just came to an end after losing to the Bills in Saturday’s wild-card game by the score of 27-24.

Despite the loss, Chargers fans that supported Rivers over the past decade watched the 39-year old throw for 309 yards and two touchdowns, hoping he would be being able to capture his lone Super Bowl ring.

On the season, Rivers completed 68 percent of his passes, threw for over 4,000 yards, 24 touchdowns, and only 11 interceptions.

The Colts want him back for another stint, but it will also fall on if Rivers wants to come back or if he wants to begin coaching high school football at St. Michael Catholic High School.

With Rivers’ 17th and possible last season coming to an end, here are some of the best tweets by fans that paid homage to the future Hall of Famer.

Colts linked as ‘most logical spot’ for QB Philip Rivers

Could quarterback Philip Rivers be taking his talents to the midwest?

While the NFL Draft prospects at the 2020 Scouting Combine are the main attraction right now, free agency buzz that’s heating up continues to draw many people’s attention.

One of the bigger storylines is the potential destination for former Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers. According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the Indianapolis Colts are linked as the top fit for the 38-year old.

“It seems right now the most logical spot would be the Indianapolis Colts, who haven’t ruled out anything, may be in the quarterback market, who have Jacoby Brissett—they have to make some decisions on—and still may draft a quarterback,” Rapoport said. “Right now, that seems like the most logical spot for Rivers and if not there, it’s kind of anyone’s guess where else.”

The most important thing to note is that Rapoport didn’t say that they’re showing interest at the moment. It’s still a bit early, but it wouldn’t be surprising if Indianapolis is aggressive to try to acquire him when free agency begins on March 18.

Rivers is familiar with head coach Frank Reich and offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni. Along with that, the Colts play indoors, have several playmakers on offense and one of the league’s best offensive lines to keep the veteran signal-caller on his feet.

Watch: Chargers releases heartfelt tribute video to QB Philip Rivers

The Los Angeles Chargers paid homage to quarterback Philip Rivers with an awesome video on their official Twitter.

The Los Angeles Chargers announced on Monday that quarterback Philip Rivers will not be returning with the team after serving as the starting signal-caller for the past 14 seasons.

To honor one of the best players to ever suit up in the blue and gold, the Chargers posted a heartfelt tribute video that shows clips dating back to when he first joined the team in 2004 all the way to when he had his final press conference just a couple of months ago following the season finale against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Watch: LaDainian Tomlinson talks about Philip Rivers, Tom Brady

Former Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson talks about quarterback Philip Rivers and Tom Brady.

Super Bowl LIV is just days away, but there are still other headlines that are swirling aside from the biggest game of the year.

Among them is quarterback Philip Rivers and Tom Brady’s future since both signal-callers are set to become free agents.

Many have speculated that both players will be on different teams when the 2020 regular season begins.

Former Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson came on the Rich Eisen Show to give his thoughts.

“I think there’s a lot of possibilities, Rich. Honestly. I don’t think it’s out of the realm to say that Philip will be coming back. I don’t think it’s far fetched to say that a young quarterback could be drafted this year by the Chargers,” Tomlinson said.

Nothing has been determined, but should the Chargers choose to move on from Rivers, it would only be right to hold a press conference for the 38-year old to say his final farewell to the team that he played for the past 16 seasons.

Tomlinson felt like the only appropriate time for that would be when Rivers retires, but Eisen reminded him that the Bolts did hold a press conference for him before departing to New York, where he played with the Jets for two seasons.

If Rivers isn’t back, Brady has been the most popular name to fill the vacancy. Eisen believes that the 43-year old would be the perfect replacement, but L.T. didn’t say anything that would suggest he’s enticed by the idea.

“Do you ignore Joe Montana’s advice to Brady (to stay put in New England),” Tomlinson said.

“I think it’ll be an interesting for us (Chargers),” Tomlinson said to conclude the interview. Interesting is an understatement to describe what Los Angeles is about to embark on when the new league year begins.

NFL executives predict where QB Philip Rivers will play in 2020

Who will quarterback Philip Rivers suit up for in 2020?

The future of quarterback Philip Rivers is currently up in the air.

It’s clear that the 38-year old wants to continue to keep playing, but where that is remains to be seen.

The Los Angeles Chargers could elect to re-sign Rivers to a one-year deal, or they could let him hit the market when free agency begins on March 18.

It is a mystery who Rivers will be suiting up for in 2020 – but NFL executives believe that it will be a team not named the Chargers. Instead, they believe that Rivers will sign with the Colts, per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

With Indy looking to add quarterback competition for Jacoby Brissett in 2020, multiple league execs say the Colts could turn to Rivers, who threw 92 touchdown passes from 2013 to 2015 with Frank Reich as his quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. Current Indy coordinator Nick Sirianni was also an assistant on that Chargers staff.

“He’s not mobile and his arm strength looked questionable at times, but he’s still a year removed from an MVP-type season. And the Colts have a window,” one exec said.

But here’s the other side: Adding Rivers, whose contract is up in L.A., might not align with the personality of general manager Chris Ballard, who covets young talent he can mold. He could opt for a QB in the draft. And the team hasn’t totally given up on Brissett, who started hot in 2019.

Indy has $93,628,216 in 2020 cap space, more than enough for two veteran-quarterback contracts. Ballard said at his end-of-year news conference that he wished he bolstered the team’s depth with all that space in 2019.

We’ve listed the Colts as an ideal landing spot for the former North Carolina State product. Not only do they have the ammo to bring him in, but there are a few different variables that could entice Rivers.

Coach Frank Reich was the Chargers’ quarterbacks coach during the 2013 season. That season, Rivers led the NFL with a 69.5 completion percentage, the highest of his career.

Along with throwing for 4,478 yards and 32 touchdowns that season, Rivers managed to take care of the football, throwing just 11 interceptions while earning a trip to the Pro Bowl.

Along with the familiarity with Reich, Indianapolis has young playmakers, as well as one of the league’s top offensive lines. Rivers would also be able to play an ideal conditions the majority of the season since the Colts play in a dome.

Rivers threw for 4,615 yards and completed 66% of his passes this past season. He also threw for 20 interceptions and 23 touchdowns, his lowest scoring output since his second season as a starter.

Should the Chargers elect to move on from Rivers, they have Tyrod Taylor, who’s entering the second and final season of his contract. The team also has the sixth pick in the NFL draft, the perfect spot to take a young quarterback.

Chargers QB Philip Rivers announces his intentions for 2020

Will quarterback Philip Rivers be with the Los Angeles Chargers or another team in 2020?

The Los Angeles Chargers’ Week 17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs was the last game of the season, and it could have very well been the final game played for quarterback Philip Rivers in the blue and gold.

But Rivers hopes it is not, at least in the National Football League.

“If 1 of 32 teams wants me, I’ll be making start No. 225,” Rivers said.

Rivers said he would consider playing for a team other than the Chargers. At this point, he said, retirement is not really an option.

The 38-year old has went back and forth with his options throughout the season. But from his comments in his final presser, it sounds like he wants to be back for Year 17, but for what team remains to be seen.

Rivers is slated to become an unrestricted free agent. His contract year wasn’t necessarily how he expected it go as he tossed 20 interceptions, one shy from a career-high.

Rivers didn’t benefit from the injuries to the offensive line, but it wouldn’t be fair to say that’s the main reason for his woes. His reckless play came at critical times, as 15 of their 17 games were determined within a touchdown or less.

Rivers has given it all he’s got since becoming the starting quarterback in 2006, putting up some of the best numbers, shattering records and never missing starts.

But regardless of the reasons why Rivers deserves to be enshrined in Canton, OH, the Chargers have never reached the Super Bowl with him under center. That’s not to say it all falls on Rivers, but the franchise may see this as an opportunity for a new era.

We will find out what the future holds for No. 17 soon.

Poll: Will Chargers matchup vs. Chiefs mark QB Philip Rivers’ last game?

Is this the end of the road for Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers?

There’s a possibility that the Los Angeles Chargers’ season finale against the Kansas City Chiefs could mark quarterback Philip Rivers’ last game in the blue and gold. Let that sink in.

Rivers, who is expected to become a free agent, has the desire to play next season. But even though his words suggest he wants to play in 2020, he is expected to sit down with his family and discuss his future. Plus, it’s not guaranteed that he will have a roster spot even if he wants to keep playing.

The 38-year old hasn’t had the contract season he was anticipating, throwing 21 touchdowns to 18 interceptions. Rivers hasn’t benefited from the injuries to his offensive line, but there are also question marks regarding his decision-making and arm talent.

With fans eager to know what the future holds for Rivers, we want to get an idea on how many of you believe he will be re-signed this offseason, along with those that think this is the end of the road for the former North Carolina State product.

Poll: Predict what the future holds for Chargers QB Philip Rivers

It’s time to put down what you think the future is going to look like for quarterback Philip Rivers.

No other player is going to get more attention than Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers heading into the offseason.

Rivers, who is set to become a free agent, is either going to return for Year 17 in a Chargers uniform or it’s going to be an end of an era.

It was almost certain that Rivers was going to be locked up for another year or two this past offseason after he had one of his best seasons yet. But both parties agreed to hold off contract talks until after the 2019 campaign.

Now, there’s uncertainty with his future as he’s nearing the end of one of his worst seasons yet as he’s been one of the reasons for the team’s nine losses, which has likely given the franchise some pause.

Rivers’ production has been plagued by distrust in his offensive line, but there’s no denying that his accuracy and arm strength has taken a bit of a dip.

When examining what the future holds for the 38-year old, it comes down to three scenarios: The Chargers re-sign Rivers to likely a one-year deal with a two-year option, Rivers retires or he finds a new team.

Since this has been a hot topic, especially among those on social media, we want to see what you believe Los Angeles is going to do within the next few months. Not what you would do, but from the front office standpoint.

Do you believe they give Rivers one more shot? Do you think 16 years is enough? Or do you think he will be playing with a different team when the 2020 season begins?

It’s time for the Chargers to think about life after Philip Rivers

All good things must come to an end.

The decline of quarterback Philip Rivers has been evident this season. But the Chargers’ loss to the Chiefs on Monday night made it clear that it’s time to start thinking about the future of Los Angeles.

In need of a win to stay in playoff contention, Rivers held his team back.

With less than two minutes to drive down the field and tie the game up, Rivers converted a fourth-and-4 and a third-and-15 to lead the Chargers to the Chiefs’ 14-yard line.

On second-and-10, Rivers was looking to go to running back Austin Ekeler in the end zone, but safety Daniel Sorensen was right there. His interception of the underthrown ball sealed the Chargers’ seventh loss by seven points or fewer this season.

Rivers tossed four interceptions, while his defense held the league’s most explosive offense in check the majority of the night. He has thrown 14 interceptions, which is the second-most in the league.

Los Angeles sits at 4-7 heading into the bye, their playoff hopes nearly extinguished. With the postseason fading, fans are left wondering what the future holds for Rivers after this season.

It’s a hard pill to swallow for most fans because they have seen Rivers starting under center since 2006, and while he may have not guided the Bolts to a Super Bowl, he is one of the greatest quarterbacks over the past decade.

Rivers has faced challenges along the way, including below-average offensive line play, and while he has overcome them throughout his career, there’s no overcoming the poor decision-making and the deteriorating arm that we’ve seen.

Rives, who will be 38 in December, is an unrestricted free agent after this season. Even though he has said that he wants to play with the Chargers when they move into their new stadium with the Rams in 2020, it doesn’t mean the team feels the same way — especially after what he’s done this season.

Signing Rivers would be short-term, but at a hefty price. That’s not all that ideal when they have other key players that they will have to use that money on.

Rivers said that he’s going to use this offseason to weigh his options. Whether that is retiring or pursuing an opportunity with a team that’s close to a Super Bowl, he will hold a special place in Chargers fans’ hearts.

So what should Los Angeles do to fill the void?

They need to find a quarterback early on in the 2020 NFL draft, such as Oregon’s Justin Herbert, Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts or Utah State’s Jordan Love, and start Tyrod Taylor, who is under contract for one more season, as a bridge to let the rookie get adapted to the NFL.

It wouldn’t be easy to move on from the heart and soul of the Chargers for the past decade and a half, but all good things must come to an end.
