Los Angeles is hiring Greg Roman as their offensive coordinator and Jesse Minter as their defensive coordinator.

Roman was Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator with the 49ers from 2011 to 2014. He helped the team reach Super Bowl XLVII during the 2012 season.

Roman was most recently with the Ravens, where he served as the team’s tight ends coach in 2017 and 2018 before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2019. He resigned after the 2022 season.

Minter was on Harbaugh’s staff at Michigan, where he led college football’s top-ranked defense in 2023. The Wolverines finished first in both scoring defense and yards allowed.

Minter has experience working for the Ravens as an assistant for two seasons. He worked his way up to defensive backs coach in 2020 before one season at Vanderbilt, where he was their defensive coordinator and safeties coach.

The Kellen Moore era with the Chargers has come to an end after one season.

The Kellen Moore era with the Chargers has come to an end after one season after the Eagles hired him to be their new offensive coordinator on Saturday.

Moore replaces Brian Johnson, who was fired by Philadelphia following their 32-9 loss to the Buccaneers in the NFC Wild Card round.

Hired last offseason, Moore’s Los Angeles-led offense ranked 18th in total offense, 13th in passing, 25th in rushing and 21st in scoring in 2023.

Before joining the Chargers, Moore oversaw the Cowboys’ offense since 2019. Dallas averaged the second-most points (27.7) in the NFL across those four seasons.

Moore was a backup quarterback with the Lions (2012-14) and Cowboys (2015-17) before starting his coaching career in 2018 as Dallas’ quarterbacks coach.

With Moore gone, head coach Jim Harbaugh will turn to fill that vacancy along with the rest of his staff.

Chargers’ Kellen Moore very eager to work with Justin Herbert

The Chargers are banking on Kellen Moore to unlock Justin Herbert’s full potential.

While searching for their new offensive coordinator, the Chargers’ main priority was finding someone who would be able to get the most out of quarterback Justin Herbert. And it is Kellen More who they are banking on.

Moore heaped high praise on Herbert at his introductory media availability, highlighting what he’s seen from him on the field.

“Justin, we know the physical talent,” Moore said about Herbert. “He obviously does a tremendous job.

I think it’s been really cool to watch him, from a fundamental perspective, as he’s gone from Oregon into the NFL and transitioned, and started playing under center — he has done such a phenomenal job of that — and the play-action game, the movement game. We know his ability to throw it down the field.”

Herbert has been nothing short of outstanding in his first three seasons with the Chargers, throwing for 14,089 yards, 94 touchdowns and 35 interceptions and shattering various records along the way.

However, Herbert has yet to fully unlock what makes him such a great player: his immense arm strength and talent.

This season, Herbert dealt with fractured rib cartilage and other key players on the offense had their respective injuries, and they did not have a speed option, which limited him from uncorking it.

Still, former offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi’s system was bland and kept most of Herbert’s throws short and underneath. And the Chargers are hopeful Moore’s offense will do wonders for Herbert.

The middle to deep passing game should improve. While Moore was the Cowboys offensive coordinator, they had the seventh-highest average depth of target in the NFL (8.3 air yards per attempt).

Additionally, on the move is when Herbert is at his best. And Moore utilized a lot of quarterback movement. In 2019, 2021 and 2022, Dak Prescott had the ninth-most dropbacks where he was rolling right or left or scrambling right or left to throw.

Moore will also be responsible for fixing one of the least efficient rushing offenses of this past season. But his bigger responsibility will be putting the Chargers’ most valuable player in a position to succeed.

“I’m just really, really excited to be able to work with him and, hopefully, help him in some way as he continues to build the career that he is going to have,” Moore said.

Kellen Moore expresses excitement over joining Chargers’ coaching staff

Kellen Moore left no doubt about his excitement to join the Chargers in his introductory press conference on Wednesday.

The Chargers hired Kellen Moore to fill their offensive coordinator role this week. Moore spoke to the media on Wednesday in his introductory press conference with the team.

Among other things, Moore clarified that he seeks to be a pivotal figure in the Chargers’ success for years to come and laid out his strategy to revolutionize Los Angeles’ offense. He praised the staff that head coach Brandon Staley has put together ahead of the 2023 season and made a point to let reporters know how he feels about his new role.

“Brandon [Staley] and I have been able to talk through this over the course of the last few days,” Moore explained. “I just love the way he really likes this offensive staff. Every interaction that I’ve had, I’ve really enjoyed. I’m really excited to work with these guys.

“I’m really excited to work with this group. It sounds like a fun, interactive, collaborative group. Certainly, we’ll go through the process from a quarterbacks coach standpoint. That’s the one that’s available right now. We’ll go through that process together and find what suits our team best and, certainly, what suits [QB] Justin [Herbert] best.”

Based on Moore’s comments, it seems like most of the offensive staff will stay in place. But there is an opening for the quarterbacks coach position, a void left by Shane Day. Additionally, with an emphasis being placed on the run game, the Chargers could look to hire a run game coordinator.

Moore’s top priority with the Chargers will be finding a way to best utilize Herbert’s skillset as one of the NFL’s most promising young quarterbacks. Paired with Moore’s innovative offense and a roster chock-full of talented veterans on his side of the ball, Herbert could be in for the best season of his career in 2023.

The Chargers have found their new offensive coordinator.

According to multiple reports, Los Angeles is hiring former Cowboys OC Kellen Moore in the same role.

Dallas and Moore mutually agreed to part ways on Sunday.

Moore oversaw Dallas’ offense since 2019. They averaged the second-most points (27.7) in the NFL across those four seasons. The Chiefs were the only team that averaged more (28.8).

Moore played in vital role in quarterback Dak Prescott’s resurgence in 2021 after suffering a significant leg injury the year before. Prescott broke Tony Romo’s franchise single-season record in passing touchdowns (37). Additionally, Prescott went on to win Comeback Player of the Year.

Prior to offensive coordinator duties, Moore was the Cowboys’ quarterbacks coach for a season in 2018.

Before joining the coaching ranks, Moore was an NFL quarterback out of Boise State. He played for the Lions and Cowboys from 2012 to 2017.

Mere minutes after it was reported that the Cowboys were moving on from offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported that Moore is expected to speak with the Chargers regarding the OC vacancy.

Rapoport and Pelissero added Dallas had already given Los Angeles permission to speak with Moore about the vacancy.

A six-year NFL veteran, Moore quickly advanced from QB coach to offensive coordinator in Dallas following his retirement. His offenses were inconsistent year over year, ranging from 2nd in DVOA in 2019 to 24th in 2020, 6th in 2021, and 15th in 2022.

Moore’s perceived ability to not extract the most out of a talented Cowboys offense, including Dak Prescott, Tony Pollard, Ezekiel Elliott, and CeeDee Lamb, was ultimately his downfall after Dallas exited the playoffs in the divisional round. But he’s a well-regarded coach around the league who was a head coaching candidate as recently as last season.

Now, his next career step may be moving to LA to build an offense around Justin Herbert.

The Chargers are in the thick of interviews as they’re diligently looking to find their next offensive coordinator.

The interview list is now up to six, and it could very well keep growing. But there is one candidate who stands above the rest that Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer sees ultimately getting the job.

Breer pegged Rams quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator Zac Robinson as the favorite to be Los Angeles’ OC.

I’d call Rams pass-game coordinator/quarterbacks coach Zac Robinson the front-runner for the Chargers’ OC job. Remember, Brandon Staley wanted to hire Kevin O’Connell from Sean McVay’s staff in 2021, and O’Connell was blocked from going. Robinson, as a former NFL QB, brings a lot of the same qualities O’Connell, along with the system, from McVay that I believe Staley would ideally like to have Justin Herbert running.

In his end-of-season press conference, head coach Brandon Staley mentioned that he would prefer to hire someone fluent in the Sean McVay/Kyle Shanahan offensive system. And Robinson has four years of working under McVay.

In addition to having extensive knowledge of the McVay offense, Robinson has a firm grasp of the passing game and the mentorship and development of quarterbacks as a former signal-caller himself, which would go a long way to getting the most out of Justin Herbert.

Report: Chargers request to interview Joe Brady for offensive coordinator vacancy

The Chargers’ offensive coordinator interview list is now up to six.

The Chargers continue their search to find their next offensive coordinator, as they have requested to interview Bills quarterbacks coach Joe Brady, according to NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo.

Brady brings plenty of offensive firepower to the table, having worked under Sean Payton in New Orleans as an offensive assistant in 2017 and 2018.

Brady brought that knowledge to Baton Rouge as LSU’s passing-game coordinator. He helped Joe Burrow become the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NFL draft and was one of the masterminds behind the 2019 LSU offense, considered one of the greatest offenses in college football history.

He was rewarded by making the leap to the NFL, where he became the offensive coordinator for the Panthers briefly in 2020 before an apparent falling out with then-head coach Matt Rhule in his second season.

Chargers to interview Rams’ Thomas Brown for offensive coordinator position

The Chargers are interviewing another Rams assistant coach.

The Chargers are scheduled to interview Rams assistant head coach and tight ends coach Thomas Brown for their offensive coordinator position on Wednesday, according to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero.

Brown spent two seasons as the Rams’ running backs coach before moving to work with the tight ends in 2022 while retaining the assistant head coach title.

Before joining the NFL, Brown coached various colleges, including the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Marshall, Wisconsin, Georgia, South Carolina and Miami (FL).

Before joining the coaching ranks, Brown was a running back for the Falcons and Browns.
